- After many years in development, the Star Trek Original Series Tricorder prop replica from The Wand Company is finally becoming a reality. Adam Savage goes hands-on with the latest pre-production sample of this replica and tours its numerous features. I'm a little bit jealous right now, since I am raised on TNG, I got the TR-590 IX from efx and I had to imagine what it can do. You here, got the full monty with all bells and whistles... I am tempted to get one, even though I never found the original series tricorder that interesting until now....

I worked at NASA-Langley, an R&D facility for nearly 10 years, and one of the great joys during my time there was when they would do a press conference about a new invention or patent, and the press would ask, “How did you come up with the idea for this?”, and 9 times out of 10, the answer would be, “Well, when I was a kid, I was watching Star Trek…”
I will never stop smiling about this. Trust me, whatever you’re wanting to see, they’re working on it.
Attended a San Diego Comic Con panel yesterday, the Science of Science Fiction. 5 of the 7 panelist stated Star Trek was their inspiration to getting into science. The remaining two were one was X-Files and the other stated they had little exposure to TV so it was the great authors of Asimov, Clarke, and Heinlein. Star Trek continues to inspire me, 50 years later!

Yeah, same here, i like Star Trek, mostly the Borg era (because it is my name and i like cyborg stuff, plus Picard is my favorite captain), but this is a beauty, and i would definitely buy it if the stock is plenty for me stumble upon one.
But i see others talking about it probably costing more than that (500+) when it eventually goes into production, which will probably be true.

I really enjoyed this because he was literally doing a product demo. Explaining some parts were still samples and not final. But you can also tell there is a genuine love for the device. The brief frustration in his voice when he had the tricorder on the stand and the strap didn’t really have anywhere to go. Just a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and presentation.
Agreed, although I wish he was a little less of a compliment sponge. Adam kept expressing his appreciation but was not acknowledged. Felt like a one sided sales pitch with the salesman tolerating interruptions to his pitch.

Best ever prop replica I have ever seen hands down. Only 300$? Wow they outdone themselves
"Aiming" for MSRP of $300. I love trying to guess prices on stuff like this, and my guess was $500. So even if their $300 ends up being a little more, I'm still impressed.
Wow, i just joked about having to sell a kidney, but even i can pony up $300.
$500 is too much for a casual purchase though, but if they don't sell out right away, i might have some time to mull it over.
The new Fallout PipBoy they just announced is only selling for $199. The Tricorder seems like it has far more components and functionality so I think a price point around $300 is perfectly reasonable.
it almost not prop, am almost sure is only every terminal to the ship main computers, own functions where very limited, the very episode (with Joan Collins), the end of every after, or thing? Mr Spock, try make missing parts get it going, as spoke of "working with only Knives and bears skins" get going cloud of smoke and bang later" this prop is self contained, no out side, works needed? 🙂

Adam, this is why what you do; who you are, is so validating. You channel and give currency to the relationship sci-fi fans have to these treasured imaginary worlds that we grew up with. Your passion for this material validates what many of us have felt our whole lives - that these books, these shows, these comics were/are/will aways be more than mere stories. They liberate our imaginations to go places and experience things that are beyond our everyday experience. I am so glad you do what you do. For me, I was cosplaying Star Trek as a child of the 1970's long before "cosplay" was part of the vernacular. To us, a 9v battery was a Type 1 phaser. A metal Surcrets box was a communicator. And those metal flip top Band-Aid boxes were our tricorders. But this beautiful, shockingly functional replica prop touches on the same joy we exerienced with those crude stand-ins of my childhood.
Cosplay is an inherited word from Japan (Kosu-pure). Entered english in the 90s first with Anime fans… then spread wider

An SD card slot and video player would be a huge benefit to this, imagine storing all of the TOS episodes on it and being able to watch them on the tricorder itself!
❤and with the medical wand--actually taking temperature, heart rate and respirations!😂 Can you imagine the child in all of us having a nurse come do your vitals like you're in sick bay? Imagine the cooperation you'd get from the grumpiest old dude who was a childhood fan!🎉Props for THIS PROP!!!
How about one step farther? Add a discreet, strategically placed camera to record video and audio to the SD Cards? (Might as well also say-the camera could be normal/infrared, and night vision!)

The build logs for the tricorder indicate that the Wand Company did put (or at least, had) an SD Card slot in the hood. It remains to be seen if that functionality can be built upon. (In fact, you can SEE the SD card slot on the side of the Hood at 15:00.)
Yes!!! Display photos and play sounds. Video would be a huge!
My favorite bit of kit from TOS. Aside from being one of the best episodes, "City On The Edge of Forever" actually showed close-ups of the bloody thing. (It wasn't until I got my Starfleet Technical Manual that I could imagine how it might work.) Seeing this exist is fantastic!

my dad passed away a few months ago and he absolutely loved star wars and star trek, he would go see every movie the day after opening night and each series as it came out and he would have absolutely love these

@@electrictroy2010 The radiation sensor for EM fields in electrical cables, the atmosphere sensor (temperature, humidity and pressure) and the compass.

Not a Trek Nerd but this piece of kit is impressive in design, build quality, functionality and value proposition.
I've been waiting YEARS for this to finish development having already bought the phaser and communicator. This is a MUST-HAVE for me. It's an incredible piece of kit. LOVE IT!
Just think - in a year or so you'll be able to make Starfleet calls through the Starlink satellite constellation. New capabilities coming online allow communications with any standard smartphone.
How well does the phone work with voice dialing with an iPhone?

@donjones4719 NO a standard cellphone cannot send signals miles into space. Broadcast range with 3G thru 5G is only 1/2 mile approximately.
You need to upgrade your phone to one that’s satellite capable

@@electrictroy2010 for a couple of years there have been direct satellite linkups, such as Apple’s new SOS feature. It’s not voice but it is sent by satellite.
@@electrictroy2010 The WAS true. But SpaceX has put up the first few prototypes of the latest model of Starlink satellite. It's designed for use with an unmodified cell phone. SpaceX has demonstrated making telephones calls like this. It'll be a while before it's generally available but SpaceX has an excellent track record with Starlink. Several hundred satellites will have to go up but SpaceX is launching over 200 satellites per month now.
However, this isn't meant for use in well-populated areas, it's meant to be able to keep in touch when in remote areas. I mentioned it because simply being able to do this at all from a Star Trek communicator (via a cell phone) will be so totally cool.
Beyond his deep understanding and love of his products, Chris proves himself in these videos to be such a master at storytelling and conversation. Could listen to him for hours.

As Adam says, this is a ludicrous object, but it's a nod to the stories that inspired us. So many people working in science today acknowledge Star Trek as a major influence when young.

26:18 I remember asking my dad back when the show was in prime time, if he thought they would ever make self opening doors like they had on the Enterprise. He didn't know. But about 10 years later, they were being installed in buildings everywhere.
But they still don't work as fast as the ones in Star Trek which were operated by hand with people behind the scenes yanking them open :-).
I'm old enough to remember when supermarkets got those rubber mat operated doors. 🤣 I think every kid of that era did the thing of lifting yourself off the mat by the railings & repeatedly activating the door.

@MrEsphoenix IN bloopers you see a lot of Star Trek doors closing on people. In our world elevators sometimes do that, but they have sensors to stop the door

As a life-long Trekkie, I can emphatically say that this is the collector's item I've been dreaming of since I was that little boy sitting on that gaudy shag carpet in front of my black-and-white TV just awestruck by what I was watching. This is truly impressive, especially for the price. Now, if only they can build a phaser that can actually stun people. 🤣
Better than a phasor that can actually stun people, have a glove Taser that lets you perform the Vulcan neck pinch.
Many years ago I was a developer on an early mobile application -- this was years before the iPhone, on Palm Pilots and later Windows CE, so it was pretty sci-fi to the users, and many of them were skeptical. I did many a demo at trade shows to people who'd never held a handheld computer before, and I learned an important lesson from that experience: let the customer play with the toy.
I can tell Adam is itching to touch this thing, but Chris does the unboxing for him, and spends most of the demo with the device in his own hands while Adam is watching and occasionally reaching over just to touch the thing. You should pay attention to that impulse to touch and respond to it. It's natural to want to be in the driver's seat when you're showing a product because after all you know all about your product and the punter knows nothing. I get it: it's *time efficient* to do the demo that way, or it would be if the goal of the demo is to perform a brain dump from you to the punter. But the real goal of the demo is to engage the customer with the product emotionally, and that's much more powerful if you let the customer run the demo while you try to guide him. For example Adam is delighted when he notices the disk insertion/release mechanism as Chris is using it. Imagine how much more powerful that delight would be if he discovered it himself.
Hear hear. I kept expecting it to switch into a hands-on segment, and it never really did. I presume they did that off camera to get the B-roll, but it would’ve been nice to see those reactions.
I gotta say this was thoroughly enjoyable. As a 10 year old kid who faithfully watched Star Trek as it aired each week in the seventies, this is so cool.
Ordered the Pip boy and now signed up and registered for this one! I'm in! Met Shatner at a con a few years back and had him sign my model Enterprise ship replica. Now i gotta get him to sign this too.

My mate Adam is a science teacher, from time to time when his questions to class are not receiving the hoped response, he will quietly get his model tricorder out & walk round with it , waiting to be asked what he’s up to he responds “ ...just scanning for life forms” god bless great teachers👍😀

yes, its just missing mark being real? not prop, and is disappointing, it so close, to not actually being prop, but device, not even connected stat trek at all, its more functual than prop in show or even the films, as Adam, is always doing weather props, that only this looks to new, (no a fan averthing battered) looks like new the ships stores, not the Mr Spock or Dr McCune used?

I love that they just went above and beyond for making this. They could have not done half of this stuff and it would have been good, but adding in all those details and extra things really shows the care and love that went into making it.

This is one of the coolest geek toys I have ever seen. Back in the day, the TOS Tricorder actually seemed centuries ahead of our time, and I never imagined we see a replica of it that was so advanced and functional as this one here. It shall be mine. Oh yes.
In the 70's there was a cassette tape recorder styled as a tricorder.
I remember that!! I couldn't afford one as a kid though. Looked it up.. now they're even more pricey on eBay 😆
@@MaxHeadroomGPT That would be great to have if I happened to need a working cassette player. I think they pre-date the universal lousy mechanism so lamented by TechMoan (The British one with the muppets). That would be so cool next to an 8-bit computer! Hay, how about modifying it to include a solid-state recorder as well, that can record from cassette. The screen can show waveform and diagnostic.
@@JohnDlugosz I wonder if someone has ever published 3D printer specs for it; you could make one for a Raspberry Pi PC, complete with working screen. I bet the buttons could be connected to the GPIO connector. Add a mini-Bluetooth card for wireless keyboard & mouse to run stuff & load apps designed to that would use the buttons & dials. The thing could have a massive SSD that could contain the entire TV show. Just a totally senseless uber-geek toy.

It's amazing how bad the tricorder design really is; now bearing in mind that nobody had any real experience with anything remotely like it, Mark and his department did a fair job primarily dealing with on-screen appearance. The mini-screen used the curved glass familiar from a TV, because that is what communicated "screen" to people at the time. The three buttons ought to line up under the screen or down the side, not in a row of their own, to easily label them on the screen.
The bulk of the device isn't for computing, but the scanning. Probably a huge power source and very special (and bulky) components for (e.g.) anti-proton source, lasers (see the martian ChemCam), and huge flat antenna array.
When the captain's log plays in this video, it gave me chills.
Watching Adam in the first three minutes of this trying to keep his hands from opening the box is magical. Signed up for this and it will be $300 well spent. I have spent more on less.
So much thought, work, effort, and love of the show went into the creation of this prop reproduction. I've been watching the development occurring over the years now and looks like it is about to become a reality. WOW!
Yesterday I started watching Star Trek: Enterprise again, then today Adam is unboxing some beautiful Star trek memorabilia 😎
Yesterday I used and held one of these at the Energizer Bar at San Diego Comic Con. I was absolutely speechless. It was amazing, delivering everything envisioned and more.
I don't know about you guys, but it feels darn good just seeing and Just hearing Adam fix and do science-based projects even in schools would be really cool 😎
I'm not a "Treky" although I watched it as a child with my Dad but this has to be one of the coolest things I have seen in years!!! - Masterpiece is the right word!!

I've never been able to grab one of TWC phasers, but I was lucky enough to be gifted one of their communicators. It is by far one of the best things I own.
I had (still have?) a TNG era tricorder toy from the 90's. Got it on eBay and carried it daily to school; dress code was either a red or blue polo and nothing else. That tricorder (and a pin) let me cosplay everyday that I wasn't stuck in a religious fundamentalist school... I was a marooned Starfleet Officer attempting to integrate with a strange, blood obsessed culture. (Always with the blood! Washed in blood, drinking blood, eating flesh. What's up with that? It really is a very gory bloody religion!)
Anyway, my tricorder was like a lifeline. A totem. A symbol of science. It was my little defiance and one of a select few comforts in life.
TL;DR I love Trek and I'll be buying one immediately.

I remember having the Revell model kit of the landing party set. communicator, phaser, tricorder. So much fun pretending.
When I got that set, it was the best day of my 12 year old life!🖖
I built a number of them as a kid for our 9 year old 'away' missions. They were much smaller than the original props but okay for our little hands.
The model kit was originally made by AMT, which also produced the starship models.
I got that kit a couple weeks ago. Now I have to build it.

The "Ship's Compass" was the Astrogator, sitting between the helmsman and the navigator. It was originally described (Star Trek Technical Manual-Franz Joseph Designs) as being centered on Earth. What was shown on the Tricorder screen was actually the ship's plot screen from the navigator's console.
Ah the TS-120. A bit more likely to explode, but a classic.

@@KazyEXE I'm afraid that's something that we'll have to agree to disagree on, but hey if you enjoy it then good for you, but it's really not my cup of Earl Grey, as far as I'm concerned Trek ended with the conclusion of Enterprise (and even that finale was shockingly bad!).
As a huge Star Trek fan awesome to see people still caring about TOS and creating awesome Star Trek stuff.
I hope Mangy_Dog gets his mitts on one of these and does his... magic to fill it up with proper technology like he did with his Voyager tricorder, which is probably one of the most amazing piece of fan made prop i have ever seen.

In the 70's I built my own out of cardboard. Imagination > $$.
He mentions the 60's camera case. We would just strap on an empty and wave it around.

I hope they can demo this in exactly this way - on camera - to every one of the living original series actors. That would be wonderful to watch.
There was a ds9 x original series crossover and it reminds me of Dax who's symbiote reminded her of how nice the old tricortors

goosebumps! I have been waiting for this for so long! And for YEARS I have been obsessed with trying to build a *practical* version of a tricorder.. something with like, an air quality meter, magnetometer, IR imaging, range finding, etc...
Adam: "So, when can we expect to get our hands on this wonderful tricorder!?"
Wand: "We were thinking only 3 to 7 more years to finish up the fine points and make it perfect. Then we'll post a release date on our website that is a year away from the date that we promise"
I've been waiting for Wand to finish this up for so long that I fear I may die of old age before I actually get to buy one.
Definitely some bitterness here as well. It was great to see the Fallout Pip-Boy reveal, which I've already preordered, but come on, the show just aired on Amazon and you already have preorders up? While the Tricorder languishes for years? I get that $$$ talks, but that really feels like a bit of a kick to the yarbles.

i’ve had my name on the list since they first announced this. the tricorder is one of the best and most iconic pieces science fiction ephemera that has ever been dreamt up, and i absolutely cannot wait until i have mine in my hands

Regardless of your love for Star Trek OG the amount of love and craftsmanship into this object is majorly impressive. People still do care about stuff and work hard to make quality products.
