I'm a little bit jealous right now, since I am raised on TNG, I got the TR-590 IX from efx and I had to imagine what it can do. You here, got the full monty with all bells and whistles... I am tempted to get one, even though I never found the original series tricorder that interesting until now....

"Cosplay was the process of pouring your body into a narrative that meant something to you." "It's a ludicrous object. And its existence feels like a spectacular nod to the stories that build us." Adam, this is why what you do; who you are, is so validating. You channel and give currency to the relationship sci-fi fans have to these treasured imaginary worlds that we grew up with. Your passion for this material validates what many of us have felt our whole lives - that these books, these shows, these comics were/are/will aways be more than mere stories. They liberate our imaginations to go places and experience things that are beyond our everyday experience. I am so glad you do what you do. For me, I was cosplaying Star Trek as a child of the 1970's long before "cosplay" was part of the vernacular. To us, a 9v battery was a Type 1 phaser. A metal Surcrets box was a communicator. And those metal flip top Band-Aid boxes were our tricorders. But this beautiful, shockingly functional replica prop touches on the same joy we exerienced with those crude stand-ins of my childhood.

When I was working at ATL, now a division of Philips Medical, they were developing the "hand held" diagnostic medical ultrasound system named Sonosite ( DARPA funded project), which is now a division of Fujifilm. Not really handheld, but the size of a laptop computer of the time (1997-1999). At the time, we were all comparing it to the medical instruments from Startrek. They did amazing things, it is now available as something that might be considered hand held. They were taking what the full size ultrasound systems had on 4-8 large circuit boards on a single custom chip. It was amazing work.

I have two TOS Star Trek Phasers and two of their communicators.
I keep one of each in a lit up display box and the other two for cosplay.
I will definitely be buying a Tricorder once they are available.
I used to build models and do a bit of kit bashing, so I love watching your builds, but I also love the tests and props videos, too. I suffer from bad osteoarthritis, and my eyes are not what they used to be, I had to pack up building models, so now I collect vintage and new sci-fi vehicles, spaceships, and figures.

This is so much fun. such wonderful imagination and craft. And, re Spock's backwards tricorder, I noticed that too. But I'm fine with it, for Spock is a contact telepath, and that applies to machines too, like his mind meld with Nomad. I expect he doesn't have to read it visually, indeed it may be specialized for Vulcan use, telepath-friendly. Plus the tricorder seems to scan all around at once, it's not localized or narrow-beamed (that's what McCoy's medical scanner is for) so you can point it 'backwards' all you like.

They should also make a Saturday Night Live Tricorder, which you fold together of cardboard.. (For some of us, the SNL Star Trek is more Star Trek than Star Trek...). Obviously, some props were of higher quality than apparent through the media...
(It makes me think of the "Munsters", were the Munster Coach & the Drag-U-La, by George Barris, were (and still is), of absolute fabolous quality... they did not give that impression, but obviously the cars were produced to color-TV standard, but the series shot in b&w....
Use the same CAD files as for the full-monty prop, but just print it on cardboard for us SNL-Star Trek fans...

I and my fellow Star Trek fans have been waiting for this prop replica to be completed for years now. The 'vid didn't help matters, but I doubt it would have been released on time nonetheless. I'm content to wait, however, for the Wand Company to get it right, which definitely appears to (mostly) be the case...They do great work - I have their amazing phaser and communicator. But I think the charge port location is in a really bad spot . . . ! They should either have hidden it inside the bottom compartment, have it inductively charged via the stand just like the communicator, or have a cover to go over the external port to prevent lint from getting in there (especially so since if it's used as a cosplay, it'll rest against the hip, rubbing against clothing thereon . . .).

And, if there were a way to calculate it, the corresponding stardate for what it would actually equate to in real-time today. In other words, it's time to start engineering a working model, perhaps using a smartphone computer module inside, with SSD inside the little disks.
The medical model can include a pulse oximeter, IR thermometer, EKG sensor, etc.
