    This is a very good (well-balanced) review. I also own this camera, and with regard to battery life, you can significantly extend it by turning off the back screen (but keeping the lens extended) between shots, and I actually find, because of the wide field of view, a lot of the time the back screen is not required at all, because with practice, you get to know what you are going to get and the sensor is good enough to crop in post if it’s not exactly how you want it. Most of the time, image stabilisation won’t be required, so turn that off as well when you don’t need it - I find that I am now getting 400 shots for each battery charge which (for me) is plenty sufficient for the day. You can also take a power bank with you if required and top the battery up (without having to take it out of the camera when you are having a coffee/lunch break.

    I started taking photographs with the Sony Zv-1 (Vlog camera), I enjoyed it so much that I bought the Sony6400 with a few lenses, which is nice, but sometimes a hassle. I sold the ZV1 and still think about how small and portable it was. Had it on me every day everywhere. Now I want to buy a new small camera, this one is superb, but it is so expensive... The pictures it can take are great...

  • @DylanRotich
    @DylanRotich Год назад +14

    Yes it is expensive but its about what you value in a camera.
    I sold my Nikon Z 5 with 24-50mm lens so I could buy a Ricoh GR IIIX. Sure a full frame mirrorless camera has more features and is a vastly more capable camera for about the same price right?
    As a non-professional I found myself hardly using it and nowhere near it's potential as a camera. I always felt I needed to buy this lens or that lens. Getting caught up in the theory of having good gear when really all I need is a camera that's not a hassle to bring everywhere.
    The most fun I've ever had shooting photos was with a Moment 58mm lens on my iPhone 11. If I could have the portability and fun factor of that plus the image quality of an APS-C 24MP sensor, that's a no-brainer. Plus you add in the film effects which in my opinion look better and more true to life than the Fujifilm sims then I'm more than sold.

    I actually “downgraded” myself from a GR3 to a GR2 since the positive film colour is so much better on the GR2. Yes you don’t have good AF, you don’t have IBIS but you get better battery life, pop up flash for certain occasions and better ergonomics. I wish they kept everything from the GR2 and squeeze in the IBIS. It’ll be the perfect portable camera.

    Don't put it into your pocket unless you want irreversible dust on your sensor - yes, you can send it in to Ricoh, but you'll be paying for that. It's a portable camera, not a pocket-able camera. Important difference. Put it into a clean, closed pouch before shoving it into your pants.

    I don’t think I can use a camera like this for the same reason I can’t take pics with my phone. For me photography is a very tactile and mechanical experience. The weight of the camera, the click of the dials to change exposure, the turn of the lens, the isolation of the viewfinder and finally the sound of the shutter. It’s magical. I use my own custom made camera straps that I carry the camera cross body, and I can take my x pro2 anywhere without any issues.

  • @nerwin
    @nerwin Год назад +1

    I been eyeing this camera lately and I'm not a street photographer. I live in middle of nowhere but still would like to have a more portable camera but man I just can't justify the cost of the Ricoh GR cameras, heck even Fujifilm in my opinion has become overpriced and hard to find now due to low production. Years ago I bought the original Fujifilm X100 for $250 and now its $800 used!! I had an X100V I bought during the pandemic because...retail therapy...I was dumb and sold it when they were starting to become scarce, I mean at least I didn't lose any money. But now when I see they are selling around $2500, pretty much double of the new price, I'm losing my mind lol.
    I have a full frame Nikon mirrorless system with several lenses but to tell you the truth, It pretty much hangs out on my desk, I might take it outside once in a while but I never bring it anymore because of the size and weight so it's basically reserved for times for when photography is planned which these days it's not very often so it's a lot of money that just sits. I probably don't really need it honestly so I been trying to find a smaller system with some lens options. I had fujifilm for years prior and personally, I just wasn't a fan of their raw files and color rendering. I know many people do, just personal. But man the Ricoh GR cameras...those cameras have such punch and everything just pops. But the lack of EVF, no weather sealing, good video, etc is a dealbreaker for me and I can't find anything similar. The closest thing I have come across of Micro Four Thirds cameras, they do seem to have a decent balance for general photography and video. But at that point, I might as well just use my phone right?
    Sorry long post. Great video!

    I agree with Takuan.
    There are a lot features this camera provides. You can’t mention them all in8:39’. For me, the lack of an EVF is a deal killer. It is hard to find a cheap plastic viewfinder that approximates this camera’s frame lines. A valuable feature is the two stop IBIS. How did Ricoh fit that into that tiny body? You didn’t mention a feature this camera is known for. Snap focus.
    A good review. A nice, small EDC camera. No camera is perfect. There is an expensive none EVF available that is sold by Ricoh but makes the camera less pocketable. For me, the lack of a viewfinder is a deal killer.

    I really like the cameras like this one, the xv100, Leica q, etc…but I just can’t do fixed lens cameras. It’s not the lens itself that’s the problem, it’s that when (not if) you get dust inside in the sensor, you’re basically screwed on cleaning it. A few weeks later and a chunk of your wallet missing, you might be able to get it serviced. I just prefer 30 seconds to pull my lens off and clean it vs 30 days without a camera and money out of my pocket.

    • @erenjam
      @erenjam  Год назад +1

      Sure, I get your point, I guess its a trade off to get a camera this small. Generally, dust on the sensor doesn't really affect the image, after a couple years if it gets real bad ill send off to clean.

    I love my GRIIIX… it’s not perfect (nothing is) and has some issues but it’s my go too camera when I don’t want to carry my two other cameras which are much larger… a Fujifilm X100v & a Sony @7 III.
    It replaced my Fujifilm XF10 (which I loved too) even though it was a very wide angle camera (28mm equivalent) but it’s wide angle wasn’t my thing as I’m more a 50mm lens guy.
    What’s good about the GRIIIX?
    It’s size, the sensor size, and its pocket-ability (not that I put it in a pocket as that’s where you’ll find dust that can get on the sensor).
    What don’t I like?
    It’s size (it’s just a bit too small for comfort), it’s ergonomics… the power button is far too small and almost unworkable when a thumb rest is fitted, it should be nearer the front of the camera next to the shutter (and round) and the PRICE!
    My old XF10 was half the price and was a good alternative for those on a budget…
    I tend to put it a a small weather resistant case and stick it in my bag so I have it with me most of the time.
    I find it’s good enough at getting the shots, but it can mis-focus when I forget to press the shutter hard down to set off the snap focus.
    Like I said, it’s not perfect… and if you’re listening Ricoh, the GRIV, please make it slightly larger and more ergonomic for secure comfortable handling, make the power button much larger and reposition it to the front next to the shutter and… how about a built in viewfinder too?
