I have one of these that had the same problem at first. Even though the charging light is only illuminated for ~30 seconds, it seems that it will continue to charge the battery if you leave it connected.
After leaving my watch in the charger for half a day (ignoring the charging light which indicated that it was fully charged immediately), it was able to enter player mode without dying or crashing, and without being connected to the charger. Unfortunately I still can't verify whether it is playing properly, as I'm missing that same headphone component that you lost. 😅
It does appear to be playing music though.

Might give this a shot soon. I ordered a replacement battery that's not a perfect fit, its a bit smaller, but hopefully gives me a backup option.

I was about to click "like" for the content of the Casio itself anyway, but when I saw Sony M-Crew running, the "like" became a must!
You won't believe me, but I'm actually recording a Minidisc right now on my MDS-PC3 from a Vaio P11 with Windows XP through M-Crew!

MR11-2286 does work but you have to swap the pins around.

I have this watch and I have tried to connect it with the software WAP PC link soft, but send me this error ° communication with the watch failed. Check the connection with the watch° but the connection it´s ok, do you know what can it be? I'm using a pc with WIn 98

I have two of them as well, and in the instruction manual, it does say to hold the mode button. So please try that before you give up.

I have a functioning unit I picked up a couple years ago on ebay. Too bad your batteries were dead. Getting these to work is a bit of a pain!

You can also hold the mode button for a couple of seconds to enter player mode

Hi All! By any chance, has anyone here a docking station for the Casio wmp-1, a multimeter and a couple of minutes? If yes, can you please plug it in, and measure what is the voltage output of the charger? When I checked on the watch itself, it should be the first (-) pin and the third (+) on the charger, when the watch is facing you, with the pins on your right :)

IMO the only valuable features that should be in all digital watches are:
World time/dual time
Full auto calendar
Multiple alarms (with optional snooze)
Stopwatch
Timer (hour, minute, sec increments and auto repeat)
Atomic timekeeping
Backlight.
Everything else is rubbish. For mp3 it is so much better to have a dedicated device with much more storage.
Let a wristwatch be a wristwatch. Don't make it also an mp3 player, a cellphone, a TV set, and who knows what else...

The battery life of these watches was like a 1995 cellphone 😩
There's probably plenty of space inside to modify & fit a modern smart watch battery.
