Hey there just thought I'd share that I found a much easier way of accomplishing this by adapting the 4 cable method and putting (pedal) OD/Boosts between the guitar signal and the amp in the dry loop, and delay/reverb/modulation in the effects loop of the amp/ helix in a single ended mono configuration, which is I think how it was intended. Can do this in mono with a SINGLE BLOCK (FX loop L) without a TRS cable or splitting into stereo then back to mono. Doing it this way also enables use of the Amp's own Effects Loop switches (Marshall, Fender, etc) . Doing it the way you've shown here actually introduces approximately ~4ms of lag between your stereo loops and seems to not work for many people, or could potentially damage the power section of their amplifier if done incorrectly. Stereo loops were intended to be used in stereo amp setups I believe. It's also kind of impractical to find a TRS Cable long enough to split to the amp

I came up with a different way to use the HX with the 4 Cable Method, but without using up a Send/Return > Mono > FX Loop block.
I use the L/Mono Input and Right Input along with the L/Mono Output and Right Output. Route the L/Mono Input to Path A of the Split (full left) and the L/Mono Output to your amp's Input. In that path you can add compression, gain, pitch, etc. (pre-gain) type effects.
(make sure to use Split Y)
Route the Right Input to Path B of the Split (full right). Hook up the Right Input to your amp's Effects Send and the Right Output to your amps Effects Return. In that path you can add your delays, chorus, reverbs, etc. (post-gain) type effects.
I haven't found a place where I need to switch between my amp's current channel to a built-in HX Stomp preamp, so this works great for me.
I also have setup patches where I route everything to Path B of the Split, completely bypassing the amps preamp and I add in a HX Preamp near the start of the signal chain and then route other effects accordingly.
I'll post a video of the process over the next few days.
    ~JF

Hey do you know a way to do this with the Helix?? And how to run cables and insert blocks and signal path on HX edit?? I’m trying to retain the tone of my amps preamp running through the Helix also be able to place effects in my amps loop as well as before the preamp( like effects running into front of amp)??
Every time I try to do this I get major tone suck and not the genuine sound of my amp. Any idea how I can set up a method to make this happen??

Your basically making the hx stomp have 2 fx loop if I understand correctly. This is exactly what I was looking for as I plan on using the stomp as an amp and cab modeler but I have a boss ms3 in my pedalboard so my plan is to have the stomp in before every pedal, in the middle of all the pedals (through the boss ms3) and after everything so I can use the balanced output of the stomp.

I won’t be very original here: I am a tube amp guy. I presently own a Fender blues junior/ like/ « clone » and I used to drive it with a Hugues and Kettner tube preamp in front of the amp. Let me tell you it sounds great… 2 tube preamp in series with a tube power amp is magic… Then I bought an HX stomp 2 weeks ago, used around 525$ US. I wanted to have more options (the pedals in the HX stomp are great). I now plug the HX in the effect return (not the 4 cable method) and wow, same magic, harmonics, etc, but with all the pedals I can dream of. The HX stomp in a tube power amp sounds even better than all I heard before coming from my tube amp. Very happy customer, no signal loss, all the harmonics are there and maybe more.

    Hi, nice vid!
If I'm not mistaken this setup can also be done by using the normal 4CM and use both effect loops (in mono).
Both options will 'cost' 2 blocks but the 4CM has the somewhat simpler setup and does not have a possible feedback loop.

    • @JoseBritesMusic

correct. you don't even need 2 blocks if you use the FX-Loop block.

When you use a trs y cable, are you using only the trs cable with ring and tip?

Question for you… I use single channel amps only… (marshall/ fender) would it be possible for me to you have my midi switcher take the place of an amps effects loop? I’d like to introduce overdrives and other things into the Signal path of the HX stomp …but then with my midi switcher (boss es-8) be able to move where the HX stomp is in my Signal chain as well will this work to eliminate the possibility of feedback loops?

Like Tim, I can't seem to use a block FX loop L (greyed out). Could this have something to do with a hx stomp/edit update? Just got it up to 3.11. Shouldn't affect the DSP and the amount of blocks though. I've also tried plugging in cables to see if the stomp needs to recognize activity, but it's the same result. Any ideas?

  • @JoseBritesMusic

errmm... no. this just complicates things.
this addresses having HX internal effects before and after the amp's preamp stage with external pedals along the way. you can get that by using the "4-cable-method" and placing your external pedals along the segment between the HX's send and the amp's input (to have them before preamp) or along the segment in between the amp's send and the HX's return (to have them after preamp).
you're using an extra unnecessary cable, taking up two blocks when you just need to use one (with the FX-Loop) and you're cluttering your signal flowchart by making it confusing and hard to read.
internally routing a Return to a Send is an interesting solution, but I don't know whether it's best practice, tbh...

  • @Tordenstein

Is it possible to somehow use the hx stomp as a second preamp with a one channel amp. Main distortion sound is through the amp with the hx bypassed. And for the clean sound, you mute the amp input signal, and use an ampsim and the amps poweramp.

Hi Gess, I don't understand why is the new cabling vs 4CM. So why is you new cables method offer more flexibility than the 4CM. For example l use the 4CM so can use the preamp models of the HX Stomp into the power amp. I only have to use 4CM and do some tweak or change(s) with effect blocks. So why the you new cable system above 4CM.

Hi Mike. I did this specifically in response to a new user who was interested in using his Stomp only for the effects, and wanted to know if it was possible to put the Stomp in different positions in his signal chain. I agree, it doesn't add any functionality for those who want to use the Stomp amp sounds. 4 cable is the way to go for that. Just another hidden power that these great Helix products have. Thanks! - Larry

@@PowerPlantSpots Hi Larry, thanks so much for your response. I agree the 4CM is a great way to use the preamp model of the amp model in hx-stomp. In this situation, the HX USB with the internal ASIO driver won't deliver your amp sound because you're using the Stomp as an extended pedalboard only. If your amp has a built in DI you could route through an IR cab in your DAW, or even better, if your amp has a DI with an IR loader, you could use that. Otherwise, you'll need to mic up your amp through a separate recording interface to capture what you're hearing live. If you have an external mic pre-amp, it seems possible to set up a USB routing that would allow you to send the mic pre into the Stomp's R input and output only that to your DAW, but I'm not sure how the impedance and levels would match up. I'll have to test that.

@@MooreMusicGuitars ah thanks for the response, I will find an easier and more straightforward way in this case ^^ (I like it simple when it comes to guitar gear ^^) still interesting to see that seems to be a lot of ways (sometimes unorthodox) to create a rig using a hx stomp.

  • @adamdagosto570

Couple questions. For drive pedals those should immediately follow the guitar and then into the Stomp. Correct? Then, any pedal you want post pre amp would go into the effects loop and utilize the y-adapter. Is that correct?
