This set has easily the least amount of singles I've purchased in the last 3 years, that even includes SILLY CIRCULAR SAW TRAIN.... I mean Thunder Junction.
This is not unexpected we've been seeing this for about 2 years now. It's just sad how these sets are getting many, but few are hitting that Enjoyment Trigger that lots of us actually enjoy. Plus, the amount of money that's required to purchase these boxes of mtg. I'ma still in ❤️ with the art and won't stop playing, but I'ma stop buying for a bit.
Wait till the AI starts controlling it. I'm sure Hasbro will have the final say unless wotc leaves them (not sure that's possible)
Are you still paying attention to sorcery contested realm at all? They just dropped the 2nd set arthurian legends and it is amazing, hope you do a video on it at some point

They need to go back to "blocks" where it's 3 sets in the same "world." Is stupid to go from Cowboys to Cuddly animals to house of horror and not flesh out any of it. They could have easily done Duskmourn as the start of the horror where we follow the humans/ survivors first and then the monsters and then the confrontation and the Final Girl.
3 sets would have even fit as a three act structure of a horror film. Maybe set 1 is has the hints of horror, with possession and the rooms from the set. Set 2 would have Valgavoth and the girl, with everything at their worst, and set 3 would be Tamiyo's goodbye and Valgavoth being defeated, with a twist ending card where it is still alive. it would have been metal!
Blocks were indeed an excellent idea, and its so frustrating that they have not just given up on them but given up on the whole idea of storytelling in magic generally. While I understand that WotC didn't like that middle sets and small sets didn't sell so well, it's cost them so much in terms of having a coherent feel. Once upon a time Standard meant you had one complete block, and the new card from a new block were dripped into it, until it was two full blocks, two settings. But these days we are getting a Standard which has anime ninjas, cowboys, detectives, gangsters, phyrexians and aztecs all at the same time. It's an incoherent mess.
Naw, blocks really sucked. You would get great worldbuilding in one set and trash in the rest.
Khans of Tarkir was peak worldbuilding, Fate Reforged was time-travel garbage, Dragons of Tarkir ruined all the worldbuilding Khans worked so hard on.
Innistrad was amazing horror set humans struggling to survive, Dark Ascension was really boring no value, Avacyn Restored was a huge mistake undoing everything horror which they had to roll back in worse future sets...
Every Ravnica set after the first (which arguably should have just been a 2 block set featuring 5 guilds each) is the first two sets are great expanding on the guilds and the 3rd is a catastrophic failure. Dragon Maze is utter garbage. War of the Spark was terrible and literally the start of everything wrong with Magic in the last 5 years...
Agree. They could have taken their time with Duskmourn, especially if Valgavoth is going to be the next big bad
@@DigitalinDaniel Basically, it depends on whether you want a story or a setting. The former needs the situation to be different at the beginning and at the end, while the later talk about something static.
WotC gave up the 3-block format, which was great for telling a story (at the cost of the setting).
But nevertheless, they still try to tell a story where "everything changes" and there are "huge repercussions" for the actions of our "heroes", while the format they now use make it even more awkward, and would be much more adequate for just describing a status quo.
I work at my LGS part time and Duskmourne has been moving perfectly fine. Store moves a ton of product, and sell through was quick (restocks unknown). May be true in some places, but my experience is much different.
Yeah, in my entire region, about 12 LGS, Karlov Manor moved extremely well and had some of the largest turnouts for pre-release. Thunder Junk failed, Bloomburrow was also bad, and Dusrmourn has been the worse...

@@Shadowx157 guess we have more detective/mystery fans in my state. Plus, Karlov Manor has so many more valuable and impactful cards across the board in many formats. I built like 4 new edh decks, and got loaded up on those sweet surveil lands, built 5 fun yet competitive standard decks along with ixalan, and I can't say the same about thunder junk and bloomredwallwannabe lol. I mean, I bought a few cards from thunderjunk and bloomredwallcopycat so they were meh. But got 4 set booster boxes of Karlov and 4 collector boxes FTW ! !! Now I have new cubes and drafts we play regularly with all the detective themes ON POINT. thunderjunk could have been better, since I also like the wild west, but the mounts and most cards pretty weak and unfun. bloomredwall didn't have any good cards imho. I though maha was the best designed card, and Mabel is ok, but obviously a blatant ripoff of Matthias from Redwall
Interesting. Karlov didn't sell for shit in my area. Bloomburrow and Thunder Junction went well. I think Duskmorn has been meh.
in my lgss, everyone likes the flavpr of duskmourn and the boosters sell pretty well
My only problem with Duskmourn is it was released too soon after Bloomburrow. Bloomburrow is great, and needs more than one month in the spotlight.

That's largely been an issue for wizards for a while now. Sets have not had room to breathe. The metas are all out of balance and so full of chaos.

Bloomburrow is great... if you're freaking 9 years old.... Seriously did you used to play magic before it became gay? In the youtube search bar type "old magic the gathering commericals". Magic used to be about wizards, dragons, knights, demons, orcs, goblins, zombies, trolls fighting to the death with masculine cool art, this game has fallen so far from what it could have become to the point where grown men are going "but but, I didn't get enough of the bunnies and mice"... holy fuck.
Personally, I don't hate Duskmourn, the gameplay of the set is fantastic, but the theme doesn't make sense for a game that is supposed to be grounded in fantasy, which gives me a dissonance when it comes to playing this set. I would have been ecstatic for this set if it would have rooted itself on the concept of a plane that is repeating a single house over and over again, with monsters that represent your deepest fears inside, but all the eighties stuff doesn't make sense for a set taking place in a universe that is essentially about wizards and fantasy. I think it is dangerous for Hasbro to stretch the identity of Magic The Gathering in order to appeal to a mass array of different audiences, because the game that players were drawn to in the first place, wouldn't exist anymore
The worst part is that Innistrad already did horror so perfectly, including some rather more subtle nods modern horror, but always put into a fantasy first context.
Exactly. Magic has many powerful magic and wizards in its history. Then as you enter this world, that power suddenly is kaput. This is no longer magic, but a seperate setting. I fear the same reaction is gonna happen when we do the multi-versal track race next set, followed by alien set afterwards. I do not want sci-fi magics. I do not want cowboy hats on every visitor. I do not want clue the gathering. I want magi-tech vibes and wizards/sorcerers slinging magic at one another. Its that hyper simple.

I like the Magic Historian's content, I authentically do. But he does with with almost every set. There is at least one video saying X set is a failure/disaster.
As a store owner, I haven't seen a problem moving Duskmourn, but the fact the Nightmare Bundle isn't out until 3 weeks after the initial release of the boosters and Commander decks is baffling.
I am almost 100% certain the hatchet was a joke. They never intended to sell it. It just wasn't a very funny joke or very well executed. Probably because it was rushed.

Can we also mention that if I buy real packs I should get some arena codes every now and then. MTG arena is the entry point into standard magic but why would I want to double invest in cards.
my friends and I have been really enjoying it. The draft experience I found to be really enjoyable. we split a box and drafted the whole thing over a week and had many memorable moments
Draft/sealed is my biggest problem with Duskmourn, personally. There are a few cards in the set that if your opponent has them, it feels near impossible to overcome. I'm glad you're having fun with it though!
I think it's added a bunch of interesting cards for EDH and has improved Standard as well. Bloomburrow & Duskmourn are two in a row that have made standard better. Feels crazy to say after Standard's been meh for so long.

@@majestyzx9081interesting take, I’ve found duskmourn to be one of the most balanced draft environments of the last few years. There’s enough good removal to handle pretty much anything in the format and most of the different archetypes are perfectly viable. Plus it’s the slowest draft format of the year, which is good because this years has statistically had very fast limited environments.
I'm having a blast with this set and draft. Bloomburrow had you on rails, as this set allows a lot more flexibility in splashing and mechanics.
I am not a fan of Duskmourn and I really dislike the draft, but I am happy other people like yourself enjoy it.

Not it isn't a joke dude only gets clicks from his weird ass doomer audience by outrage farming. Nothing on this channel is ever indicative of real life experiences playing the game. Just check how many times he's said magic is dying in the past 4 years while the game continues to explode in popularity. just sad.
For those who don't know the devastation of activision blizzard, I'll tell you in advance: this is nothing and what's coming is much worse. People capable of anything for money without moral or legal limits.
My only real complaint about Duskmourn is how it was sandwiched too closely between 2 other sets. The whole point of the theme was modern horror, so the 80s flavor was on-point. It seems to be selling pretty well too🤷♂️

As far as sealed duskmourn goes, it'll be okay. Any set that introduces a new rare land cycle that enters untapped, and gives you access to coloured mana right out the gate is always going to do fine.
What got me with Thunder Junction and Markov Manor is that these sets aren't planes, they're single events. Bloomburrow, Ravnica, Amonkhet are all planes first. Markov Manor is reduced to a single house, and Thunder Junction is a heist. Beyond the gimmick of cowboys, what do we know about Thunder Junction? The scale feels so small that it doesn't even feel like a full standard set.

I said this in another reply, but unless he shows us actual sales numbers, this negativity is all just speculation.
I think the major issue is the amount of sets per year. That leads to hasty design, poor quality control, crammed schedules, overpowered cards, lack of consistency/sense in story and many more issues.
If a set cannot unfold to shine or crumble in its own light it all is forgettable. Nobody cares, there is no connection to the sets anymore like there was when e.g. we were on Tarkir or Kaladesh.
I started playing MtG around 4th Edition and Ice Age.
Back in the day I would get excited when I saw a new set on shelves of Toys R Us. I miss those days. And when I stoped playing for the better part of a decade I still enjoyed seeing new sets and checking out those cards.
Now I just want the game to have a peaceful end.
Naw, I want my grandchildren to play this. Wotc just needs to slow down the product, and return to making compelling stories for the lore

Duskmourne is far too soon after bloomburrow, but duskmourne is SO FUN TO DRAFT that I honestly am happy that it’s here early, compared to the Aggro piles that was all of bloomburrow draft

If they wanted to do a ghost busters Universes beyond I would have been all for it. Maybe if they did a movie trope set it would be cool. I do feel that adding these tropes to duskmourn does muddy the feel of the set.

I had no interest in Duskmourn, but I still enjoyed the pre-release and playing my pre-con Commander deck (Death Toll). I'm not sure why it would be considered a failure. Maybe average, but not a failure.
I love it. Standard was in a good place after Bloomburrow and Duskmourn added some cards that absolutely slap into Standard.
It also added a lot of new enchantments for each color into EDH providing some reason to actually put enchantment interaction in your deck now.
I don't know what it's doing in modern, vintage, or legacy. In EDH and Standard though, both Bloomburrow and Duskmourn have been fantastic.
Not to mention that Duskmourn has retroactively made Markov Manor a better set as far as card interaction goes.
My biggest complaint with Duskmourn is the limited/draft environment is extremely lopsided if you pull certain cards, but not every set can be great at everything.
Commander shouldn’t have been made a format.

The Plane feels weird, Valgavoth is a cool villain but underused. Compared to Bloomburrow that just came out and that feels like a real setting not just "Hey wouldn't it be cool if we made our own 80's plane but do nothing with the idea"
The whole "endless corrupted house that brings your nightmares to life" a la Backrooms or House of Many Doors is actually an interesting horror idea. It really doesn't need any of the 80s movies aesthetics, and honestly it clashes with the far more interesting villains in the form of the literal demon or the nightmares made manifest.

I don’t think duskmourn is anything close to a failure. I just think people are burned out on the amount of products. People most can’t afford to buy much. Duskmourn is my favorite standard set of the year, probably of the last few years.
Must vary a lot. I went into my lgs Saturday (Sept 26) and the only Duskmourn left was 1 booster pack. No boxes, no decks, completely sold out
All the lgs’s by me have basically sold out of duskmourn and have no collector boxes left…..no discounts at all.
Ppl genuinely like gruesome mtg art and more seriousness, over goofy bloomburrow and outlaws of thunder junction.
Why do you think unsets need lands to sell; mtg players at large want to play an adult card game with grown up artwork…..not childish artwork and comedic gameplay

Another little mistake in production is on the duskmourn spin down dice. When you have the logo right-side up, it doesn’t spin down naturally. If you have the logo upside down, it works as expected

I honestly like it as a set in terms of aesthetic. I am surprised that it's doing bad. Also, I hope Wizards considers paying more attention to the other competitive formats over Commander but I can dream.

At my locals the commander decks and set boxs are flying off the shelfs. So i confused where your getting this information.
Most places I look online, precons are sold out. So at the very least it’s not a complete failure 🤷♂️
I just got a collectors box. Almost impossible to find. Either they didn't print many or its flying off the shelf.
Does anyone else think that commander was actually better when it wasn't catered to it was way more fun to figure out what could work in a deck then see every card mechanic be worked in to legendaries. Commander is very much a everything is so broken so nothing is
EDH was supposed to be a format where just getting up to 100 unique cards that were worth playing was part of the challenge. Designing cards specifically just for it means that now you have all the choices you could ever want.
One of the appealing things about commander is that you could just bash together a bunch of cards or mechanics that you personally like and have an casual and enjoyable experience.
The problem is that when they start producing cards specifically for commander is that it sucks away some of that fun. You end up building decks around pre-designed mechanics.
That era is over. Most of us never even encountered it.
Yet Commander is still our chosen method of engaging with MtG.
I agree we get too much product too fast. I agree there are too many For Commander cards in each set.
What are you going to do, though? It’s not the format’s fault that Hasbro’s need for an ever-increasing revenue flow prompts all this product saturation.
All I’ve heard from anyone is duskmourn is a cool set. Consumer spending across all retail categories is substantially down right now and will continue to be through this election cycle in the U.S.
A friend and I each bought a play booster box to open together. Both boxes had ONLY 3 MYTHICS!!! Will NEVER buy another box again. Wizards has lost a regular buyer in me.
Don't buy boosters with the expectation of getting a mythic. You open packs to for fun and buy the singles you want.
Yeah, but i get what hes saying... i got WAY less mythics and rares in the duskmourn boosters than i did out of the other boosters ive bought in the last few month. At first i thought it was luck, but seeing so many others say the same tells me otherwise.

I cancelled all three of my nightmare bundles and the endless punishment precon(I ordered the precon through Amazon back when it was first available for preorder. I received a message it was delayed/restocking and yet my buddy preordered last month and received it last week. How does that work?) I ended buying the singles from the set and precon and spent less than $60 for ALL the cards I wanted. The ones from the set were even the alt art foil rooms I wanted, alt art foil razorkinx2 and alt art foil demonic counselx2.
Bring BACK BLOCKS. first one dusk is like stranger things, second one upside down, third be the whole plane finally being the house .
I mean, i dont feel inspired by the duskmorne set to make a commander or add things to one I own.

I won my Commander pod with the Death Toll pre-con at my LGS last night. It's been a blast to play with. I'm not sure where people are saying Duskmourn is failing. All the stores in my area have been selling a lot of product. I'm only seeing a handful of Commander pre-cons on the shelves. Endless Punishment is nowhere to be found unless you want to pay $80+ because some stores are marking them up.

This is false. If it’s truly not selling it’s because of the frequency of releases not the quality of this particular set. It kicks ass. Zero players I’ve talked to share the sentiment it was bad in quality, playability, or aesthetic.
Duskmourn is sold out here... perhaps you have access to data I don't but it seems to be the same most places
This really feels like the take that was going around before release. Everyone ive spoken to does not feel this way and is quite enjoying the set. None of my lgs have started discounting items yet either.
Looks like other commenters are saying the same. Id love to hear you comment on this dissonance and where youve been hearing this from. Id love to keep thinking you have relevant takes with a finger to the pulse of the players
It's another Commander set. I believe that real Magic sets stopped around 2019.

For me it was in 2014. When they switched the frame treatments and put the set xyz in the bottom left. Same time they switched from the 3 set blocks to 2. BFZ and Oath were mid, SOI and Moon were good. Kaladesh, Amonkhet and ixalan and blocks were good too. But something from the 3 to 2 releases lost something special to me. Aside from Dominaria, Guilds and Theros BD, it's just been garbage since. So I guess 19/20 was when it was completely lost but 2014/15 was when the game stopped feeling the same. Felt like that was when they really started the push to make cards for commander.
Fine by me and many others.
this is way off base: the pioneer RC this weekend will feature many, many duskmourn cards. all the overlords, all the verges, the red leyline, FOMO, some eyeballs. we've even seen a few cards break into modern (FOMO and the eyeball at least)

So I guess these two sets back to back were kind of genius this close together. Get both sides of their player base. I’m actually impressed rn when I think of it that way!
Lousy flavor, overpowering cards, and higher prices for worse quality cards. No Standard bans or attention to the format at all- I am missing where Hasbro is trying to grow it.

I've heard very good things about the set, but for me I don't like the theme.
The art is too intense and I've got kids.
Also at the exact same time, the art is stupid; everyone has ghostbusters packs, sneakers and looks like they don't belong.
I've only heard good things about Duskmourne. The limited environment is a ton of fun. It has a popular theme.
I think WOTC was going to do a Ghostbusters Assassin creed/Aftermath style set to go with Duskmorn then changed their mind.
Hm... Most of the players I talked to, like the set or at least don't have bad feelings. I can't find offers of fire selling the product at stores I usually buy. Is it really that bad? Or is it only a difference in region (EU talking)?
I see the problems with standard, but these are ongoing... I hope for wotc to get better, but standard is not my pet and I don't care for commander either. I still hope that wotc learns from mistakes and will carry on to make a good product. Probably different than 30 years ago, but still good.
I'm an old wizard. I've been around on and off since Revised. I've gone through many, MANY cycles of "Wizards has killed MTG!" over the years. I've largely shrugged them off. But this one seriously feels like it could be the big one. I don't get the sense that people who care about it as a game are running the show anymore.
Lots of entertainment aspects are experiencing same phenomenon..
Activists joining companies with the SOLE INTENT of making the product they work for worse for the consumer because those activists HATE THE CONSUMER...
It doesn't matter though because this game will have die-hard junkies spending money with them until they lock the doors for the last time...
Duskmourn seems to be doing great in my area. The prerelease was packed and everybody loves the set. The room cards are also not *that* complicated, they're basically just enchantments with more flexibility. And maybe it's just nostalgia talking but the 80s horror theme is great and it's not like Magic hasn't done horror sets before.
I own a store and Duskmourn has moved just fine. We have a few precons left and a bit of boosters.
It’s not a failure. It’s being slammed between a great set and foundations. Wallet fatigue. The cards are very playable and will impact standard, pioneer and modern. Atraxa is no longer the top biggie for reanimate.
So, it was a failure
Also people including myself wont buy another product until faith is restored.

If you look at how duskmourne has been selling on tcg player, it's just a bit behind bloomburrow and has already outsold karlov. I know Rudy has talked about how it's selling well, and the reception everywhere else I've seen has been positive.
also i just had to say sorry but i feel like bloomburrow was a gimmick just like all the rest. it was WAY too cutesy for magic. Maybe that stuff works for pokemon but i thought it was extremely unfitting and quite honestly dude just kind of lame.

UMMM, nowhere on existence is duskmourn NOT selling well. Sold on out boxes everywhere. The cards in it are INSANELY powerful compared to thudner junction or bloomburrow. I don't know where this crazy opinion is coming from???

Duskmourn is actually pretty fun. It’s something different.
This was an awesome set, not sure where you get the “negative feedback”. I had an awesome experience in pre release and drafting it.
What I am starting to see, if stores and people don’t make 5x their money they call it a failure.
The mechanics of Duskmourn are generally not popular, the power level is low, the chase cards are few, and there is a new set next month.
Granted, I haven’t been hearing much criticism about the style of the set or the story. But the cold hard reality is that the average player is only going to respond to one thing when it comes to these sealed product, and that’s value.
Eldraine is still selling like hotcakes because every collector pack you open is probably going to be full of value.
Also, standard just isn’t fun compared to commander. It’s a lesser value proposition.
My hot take? They get rid of the reserve list within the next two years. Want to make some money? Reprint the dual lands at rare and guarantee one of them in a collector’s pack for the next Commanders set.
Low power level? On what plane of existence? The set is pretty pushed
Standard and other formats will never be anything unless you have real prize support and competitive tournaments. I'm no casual player. I want the things of old to come back. Otherwise, I have no interest.

Duskmourn is not a bad set by any metrics. The rare landbase is pretty cool, the cards aren't bad at all, and although I'm not a big fan of the alt arts, the regular art is still interesting.
Okay, after Bloomburrow, it feels inferior, but it's no Karlov Manor (though very clunky and lazy, the set wasn't as bad as described)
It made fun... and dare i say Playable? Duskmourn is fun. Very smart plays. Creative even. Enduring are sticky icky😮

Karlov Manor- Another Ravnica set, I love Ravnica so much worldbuilding what a classic...
Oh this isn't Ravnica, its like a fanfic with Ravnica characters, this is worse than War of the Spark's bullshit...
Thunder Junction- Omg we are finally getting a cowboy set!?...
Oh this is like more fanfic shit with random Magic characters... too many tokens, "outlaws" is just stupid... I do like the original stuff though, The Big Score is kinda crazy... but the rehashed characters are pretty cringe.
Bloomburrow- Omg we are getting a Redwall set!? I love Redwall and Mouseguard...
Cool this is a Redwall set, great mechanics although I personally dislike offspring making too many tokens... Planeswalkers are still cringe.
Duskmourn- Huh, a horror set that isn't Innistrad, could be cool...
Eww, wtf is this? Why are ghostbusters and televisions in Magic... why is the main cast literally all of the most cringey characters? Why are we stealing Theros's Enchantment Creature gimmick? Aside from the few Aminatou cards everything about this set just sucks. (and I can't/won't even use the new Aminatou cause its printed in some gaudy frameless border.)

I cracked packs from the set for a couple cards. And I ended up pulling a Nashi from one of my packs. After that I was like: I'm done opening Duskmourn as a set.
I just bought 40 bucks in the singles from Card Kingdom. Done.
i thought the door enchantment thing was laughably bad. thats the only thing i really hate about mtg arena is how you get rewarded with packs that you cant even choose from.
I haven’t heard anyone saying it was failing or disliked until this. I agree it’s pretty mediocre and I don’t care much for the pandering retro theme but there are a couple handfuls of good cards mixed in with the over costed garbage
It's pretty telling: i bought a lot that included a Play Booster box, Collector Booster box and a Bundle for Duskmourn. Felt super meh.
Meanwhile, we're 2 Play Booster boxes, three Collector Booster boxes, 2 bundles, several standlone boosters, myriad singles, and even a bunch of accessories deep from Bloomburrow.
BLB is truly the best set, I feel, since the Urza's block.
I like Duskmourn (thematically and otherwise) a _heck_ of a lot more than Bloomburrow, and I've really enjoyed playing with the new cards and mechanics in Arena. That being said: I haven't really bought physical boxes and decks for a good long while, and I couldn't care less about the commander format and any commander-specific products.
What? Sealed tournaments were super fun. Commander decks selling like hotcakes. Pretty powerful cards. Only argument is that most cards aren't really expensive.

Wizards pushing the horror aspect of Duskmourn like Innistrad doesn't exist or anything.
@raiserofchickens I liked the art from Innistrad, but hated the day/night mechanic, it makes it hard to add cards from that set meaningfully into decks that don't utilize the mechanic heavily. I don't mind the 80s grind house vibe they were going for with Duskmourn, but I do feel like it was let down by the fact that they couldn't really crank the horror visuals. The classic horror theme of Innistrad lends itself more kindly to magic in that sense

I have heard nothing but positive reviews of Duskmourn limited and Cathy wait to draft it. I’m also a big fan of Archenemy and am happy it was included in the Commander product. Also spooky yay.
Neon Dynasty was the design team on their Cyberpunk binge, Karlov Manor was the designers going through their Agatha Christi phase, Thunder Junction was the design team discovering spaghetti westerns, Duskmourn is the design team letting their Dead by Daylight obsession come through.
Regarding the flavor, I also found it weird at first if they're survivors scrapping, how come there are new and nice things. The story mentions a person that finds a room with "fresh" strawberry jam, which makes me think there are rooms with "new" clothes or electrical devices that people can take too...
Seems like a fine set to me, I would like wotc to slow back down on the releases but that’s highly unlikely. Other than that tho I don’t see too much of a problem.

Having scary/horror elements in a set can be flavorful. Making the entire set about that, ala Duskmourne/Karlov Manor and the set sucks.
Way more players prefer the fun of Bloomburrow over the edgelord Duskmourne feel. Scary belongs in black, not all 5 colors.

I think scary can be in every color, BUTT, the cheesy "scooby doo" heros takes the emergence away.
