the children yearn for llanowar elves and lightning bolt
lightning bolt 😳
Bolt the Bird ✨
Lightning Bolt gets printed until Lightning Strike rotates out
Look kids, this is what descending into madness looks like in real time.
the real question is - can the costs be paid?
lol
Seriously! I come to this channel for what FEELS like objective analysis and ideas, but at best... this is a wish list. 🤣
DESERT TWISTER MENTIONED LETS GOOO
Wow you really went for it. All these old cards that haven't been in standard for years. It would be interesting to see if this is what wizards is going to drop on us. Im all here for it but given their track record id say less old cards and more newerish cards
I doubt WotC will be this bold. I wish they would be though!
I remember Magic 2010 and 2011, and no one thought back then that Lightning Bolt had any shot at being reprinted, not after seeing cards like Singe. I like a lot of your list (especially Desert Twister), but out of all of these, I think Lightning Bolt has a real shot for the nostalgia / "shock" value (har-har).
Agreed, “The sparkmage shrieked, calling on the rage of the storms of his youth. To his surprise, the sky responded with a fierce energy he'd never thought to see again.”
Sorry Dev, Helping Hand brings it back tapped.
Exactly! The hand doesn't help the ball
Turn 1 Hypnotic Spector was not only feared in kitchen tabke magic. Thag card on turn 1 against control was a win agaisnt control if the opponent didn't have Swords To Plowshares.
Hear me out though, if you bring me a lightning bolt you bring me the bird that has to get hit with it
Both seem equally likely at the least. Then again, it was within the last year I witnessed an argument online about whether or no Standard would ever see Llanowar Elves again.
Land, Birds, land, Fires, land, Blastoderm, land, Saproling Burst. Surprising how many times I saw this happening at the time.
The excitement was electric when over run first came out!
fog
- green needs early interaction
- degenerate aggro needs to at least consider noncombat damage
could be wrong. often am.
I like this take. Green can't reasonably remove creatures for 1 mana, but casting a fog to blank most of mono-red's turn would be pretty funny. Not a perfect answer because of death triggers and fling damage, but it would do a lot for green.
I was hoping for fog to be on his list... I miss turbo fog... Yes I was a toxic player...
Nearly chocked on my sandwich when you said “duskmourn just came out so it’s time to talk about that next set” (not exactly how you said it).
Always love your delivery, Dev!
The excitement was electric when over run first came out!
I'm halfway through and I discovered that Dev is basically a midrange red lover lol
Drain life. Soul burn if you wanna gimp it but an x drain black sorcery to close would be awesome.
But you have to keep the insanely long description of what it does
Ravenous Chupacabra was in the first ever deck I built… 😊❤ I love hearing it mentioned! It was a weird Surveil deck of all things and I would reanimate it and feel like a total boss 😎💪🏼
Looking forward to Ugin, Myrs, and Nicol Bolas.
nicol bolas planeswalker would be pretty sweet
OMG I Love Pillage and Stone Rain.
Zuran Orb + Enduring Tenacity would be SCARY.
I want silver knight, white knight, black knight or other reasonable protection from a color creatures
Blood Knight?
Since wizards has to pay royalties to their early artists when they reprint their art (their contracts used to be much more generous) I doubt we'll see alpha art in a print to demand set again, unfortunately.
Watch out, Doomsday Excruciator exiles those cards though!
This list is freaking amazing
Also, it is wild that they'll put absolutely broken "designed for commander" cards in sets, but they won't give us Bolt bc its powerful for not-Commander.
Guessing this is a reference to Nadu, and... yeah, that was a mistake, as WotC have copped to, _but_ it's a mistake precisely because it was designed for commander and instead saw play in 60 card constructed formats.
Generally speaking, printing dumb ridiculous cards for the casual social format, while attempting to maintain balanced tournament formats, is exactly where those dials should be tuned to.
@PantomimeHorse what I'm talking about isn't specifically Nadu- it's all of the "whoopsies!" they've made jamming cards that don't belong together into packs, haphazardly ruining formats over and over again- and then they're like "woah lightning bolt? Let's calm it down the crazy talk!"
Saying us constructed players don't get a super staple like Bolt whIle they skirt Reserve lists to reprint Black Lotus to appease the EDH whales is just straight up bullshit.
@@Nat1Games I don't think anything you're saying really hangs together, tbh - Like, rant away by all means, but they're not reprinting lotus, are they? ...'cards that don't belong together in packs' - Eh?
...'ruining formats over and over again' - Which formats? When?
If your argument is that WotC are inadvertently souring formats by printing overly powerful cards designed with one eye on the EDH market - Fine, you might be right. So why do you want them to print a card they think is too powerful for certain formats into that format?
@PantomimeHorse Hogaak and Nadu ruined Modern but were designed for Commander.
Jeweled Lotus is a Black Lotus reprint for edh.
I'm against them putting commander designed cards in standard and modern sets bc it always gives them an out when they mess up: "oh we're sorry you guys were playing with the cards wrong."
the moment I saw Zuran Orb on 2nd was happy and got a gut feeling you were going for Lighting on 1st place XD. Great video, as always :)
I think a more realistic take on what cards will get reprinted are cards that will keep up in standard and other formats (because every set must have cards for every format), and fill spaces that they want filled for the next 5+ years
And not be things they don't want sticking around for 5+ plus years, i.e. Lightning Bolt.
Love the content Dev!
I think the optimism around Foundations is nice, but I don’t share any of it. It’s just a rebranded core set, and they ditched the core sets because they weren’t selling well enough.
Will WOTC actually improve the quality, or just rebrand and charge more? I lean latter. Don’t wanna yuck anyone’s yum and personally would love to see some price control or strictly fun reprints
I'm optimistic because it seems like a set that genuinely does exist first and foremost to support the format in the long-term rather than just squeeze some extra cash out of the playerbase for short-term gain. Core sets filled an important role, but if they weren't selling well, it seems silly to hope for WOTC to keep printing them rather than to find an alternative, and I personally like this as a solution. That said, If this product does actually turn out to have a higher price point than a premier set, I'll take back any positive words I've said about it.
If red can have Turn 0 burn then blue can have Counterspell and black can have exile removal.
Anhk of Mishra or black vise! Eat it domain!
it's the 20th set released this year
Wasn’t so surprised by your number 1. When they revealed llanowar elves and a functional reprint for blood artist, it already had me expecting lightningbolt and can imagine them adding interesting new frames for the classics. Very interested in the set so keen for spoilers
"no red based midrange these past few years"
Forgot about Fable of the Mirror Breaker ruling standard for two years, i guess
Goblin Grenade is already on Arena and has been since the beginning. It’s part of the Tutorial. It’s just uncraftable. It even has its own custom animation.
They won't print hyppy because of the random discard. Now, abyssal specter, maybe....
I'm throwing tomatoes at you right now
You can see the cat turn towards him near the end of the video
Cat knows the closing phrases, and gets attention afterwards
Can't wait for the reprints, I'm super excited! 🎉🃏
Hoping Slivers make a glorious return!
A lot of wild fun choices!
Also: Would be nice if you read what the cards did in case we're just listening and not actively watching.
I want paralax tide, tangle wire and port
A real shakeup sol ring lo😊
I’m sure it won’t, but Brazen Borrower is probably my favorite card of all time and I’d love to see it come back. We had so much fun together when he was in Standard…
Ew
Ive made a couple of standard decks in the year or so since 99 and every red deck I'm always looking for a lightning bolt replacement and i really don't care for shock. I would rather use torch instead. At least an option to get to that lightning bolt lvl plus exile.
i would give anything, ANYTHING in this world to have lightning bolt back for my izzet deck
that would be intense man. five years of lightning bolt? is that really what we wanna do?
Right out of the gate, Momentary Blink is a great choice. With Foundations being primed as a ground floor entry for new players, this is a good card to help guide people towards pairing colours or knowing what to splash for. It's also going to be a standard core for a long time, and I'm always going to want to blink one of my guys, so this would be welcome.
I just want my coiling oracle or Lorthos, the tidemaker back.
Some good ideas , and yeah ball lightning brings back the memories.
Gob grenade, bombardment and bolt with ball lightning would be fun. Run a few gobs out, bolt any early creatures and go to town with ball lightning
As a Pauper player, i'm really excited for the downshifts in this set. since its very similar vibes to a core set. so more reprints than standard sets, which likely means more downshifts! which i'm all about.
thats a good point. this is a pretty good opportunity on wizards part to hugely inject some cards
vision charm is sick haha
Ball Lightning with Helping Hand don't work together. Helping Hand puts it into play tapped and Ball Lightning sacrifices itself at the end of the turn. I do agree to reprint Ball Lightning though.
What I really think they're going to do. Is make foundations in such a way that they'll make a lot of the older Commander/Brawl decks playable in MTGA.
Especially since they just took over commander.
the last time i played truly competitive magic was the mirrodin era with atog and shrapnel blast, so if they reprint hose I might have to revisit that deck. I'd also gladly welcome back solemn simulacrum 😁
Not sure if this still applies, but i remember shutting artifacts off by tapping them with icy manipulator? Been back for 2 years since quitting, roughly when hasbro bought wotc. No mana burn and shutting artifact effects off by tapping them seem to be some of the biggest differences in gameplay. Still trying to catch up though. Currently playing standard and edh, cedh. As well i so miss the word bury!
The artifact tapping thing got removed with the 6th Edition rules update (I believe that's when it was).
the moment they reprint lightning bolt, they restringe A LOT all the playable creatures in standard AND pioneer. Basically all 3 drops that have 3 toughness become unplayable if they don't have a very good ETB.
No way Desert Twister makes it in, destroy any permanent is in green's slice of the color pie
I'm gonna guess shelly will be back.
Yea yea reprint Lightning Bolt and Bump in the Night....and Simian Spirit Guide
Bolt would be fine in standard. I want it for pioneer especially
Shivan Dragon is definitely a Magic staple like Serra Angel, should see a reprint. I definitely like the Specter and Atog! 😁
So, foundations is M10 legal for 5 yrs instead of 2.
A coreset being a single living, evolving set instead of being a set that gets printed entirely anew every year makes soooooooooooooooo much sense, how and why did it take us all so long to get to this point, mindblowing.
Because like most, I started with a life gain deck I’d want: “golden glow moth”, “fiendslayer paladin” and “sunbond”.
9:36 This goes infinite with some cards in standard already, I think
Nobody ever, ever wants to crack a Standard set pack and crack a Shivan Dragon 😂. Especially with Bonehoard Dracosaur and that other 5 drop dragon (can't think of its name 😂😂😂). Still, I feel for ya bro. I'm old as shit too!
@@jesselaplante1040 i hate to say it but it could almost be uncommon nowadays
A big 6 mana bungus with minimal effect could very well be common.
Could easily be an uncommon
@@Cthuski didn't think about it like that. Shit, could be a common like Colossal Dreadmaw!🤣
Terror of the Peaks! That's the one I was brain farting about. Compare that to Shivan Dragon lol 😂
Great video dev!!!
let's get some slivers in hereeeeeeee
All the atogs of different colors would be fun. I hope foundations includes eldrazi & slivers, and infect creatures
Goblin grenade is the card that got me hooked on ron spencer.
"if you're playing red the only big x spell is song of totentanz"
my brother in christ have u seen the screaming nemesis / torch the witness combo
I need more hydras in standard
I want Goldvein Hydra out of standard lol, I want one for my Gruul treasure themed commander deck
Very much hoping we see Stitchers Supplier in this set, it badly needs a reprint, and theres almost no good mill creatures, aside from Balemurk.
For the Cubists, I wonder how many wishlists about Foundation are going to overlap deeply with their pet under-powered cubes.
Reprint the iconic big creatures from the first sets: Shivan, Serra Angel, Seinger, Fat Moti, and Force of Nature. Also the colored knight cycle: Black Knight, White Knight, etc.
Would love Hyppy back. I'm so happy mono-black discard is viable now.
Would also enjoy seeing Gigantosaurus return. Yes it's a Timmy trap but I still love that silly card even if it will be chumped forever.
Neat list but glimpse in standard for 5 years would be so problematic. They would have to design every subsequent set around it
Correct call for #1
Absolutely love it.
I would love more mill cards, thanks 13:27
Instead of Goblin Grenade, let’s go with Goblin Bomb. It’s from Weatherlight. Never reprinted. And screwy as heck, except now we have ways to add counters with proliferate.
Nice list. *want* Fires of Yavimaya and Shriekmaw, haven't ever seen those creature lands before (I assume they'd be errata'd with creature types etc).
But _Bolt?_ As if standard midrange isn't already squeezed out enough already between pedal-to-the-floor aggro and durdly control decks
The overrun with infect would be great
Zuran Orb would completely wreck aggro in standard
I think Lightning Bolt would be an interesting test for standard because it might still just be too efficient, but if they were going to reprint it, it should be in a normal set rather than one which is going to be part of the format for 5 years. They *really* want to be sure that they won't have to ban anything from Foundations.
Very early engagement cookie.
I think Ziggy digs spooky season
Shrapnal blast? You are a very bad man dev! xD That would be gnarly
13:17 hell ya mill
I’ve casted so ball lightning in my old sly red, with mog fanatic and cursed scroll
Atogs power comes from the artifact lands. He`s not that big of a threat without them.
There's no good argument against Bolt. If Standard is to remain a turn 3-4mat, and we're to have Lawnmower Elves (and I'm hoping BoP), Bolt is an easy include, Shock or no. And respect for Vision Charm and Goblin Grenade. Young'uns don't know the value! Seriously, Wizards wants power in Standard, and already shows some inkling vis-a-vis Lawnmower Elves, why not crack the seal and let fly the Ritual, STP, Brainstorm, Berserk, Jokulhaups, Wrath... But, on that note, I can all but guarantee they will *not* reprint Pillage. As I alluded in a recent comment, the only thing Wizards is more allergic to than lawsuits is printing any kind of efficient land destruction, that blows up *any* land. Everything they make LD-wise nowadays is narrow, and I think it's better that way. However, that said, it wouldn't be the biggest shock to see Wasteland, or some homage-to thereof. Definitely looking forward to the set.
RUclips notifications failed me. They came a full 5 minutes after the video came out
Is there some reason why you must watch the video the instant that it posts?
@@JasonOshinko I just want RUclips to do it's job.
Plus I like these videos and would like to watch them when they are released.
I'd like momentary blink, solemn simulacrum, warped devotion, acidic slime and coiling oracle.
My pie in the sky choice would be masticore.
flametongue kavu
The mill deck does exist right now just play a fuck ton of enchanment based removal and the 3 crabby bois and youre pretty alright
Yea the last thing I need is more support for those deal my power in damage to anything when I die deck. Cacophony scamp, the damn mouse, callous sell sword they are all disgusting to fight against.
don't want Mulldrifter and Shriekmaw because that'd just be EVEN MORE gravy for the Beans Domain deck, and that's already way too strong.
My top 3:
1: Blood Moon, we need more nonbasic land hate in standard and especially pioneer

Aw, a nice and balanced playing field. Coming up next, the gold cards!
Dev can we get the link to that old video you referenced at 0:46 please? Thanks bro you’re the best!
I think they should reprint Mana Crypt, Dockside Extortionist, and Jeweled Lotus
If Shrapnel Blast is too strong for Standard, what do you think about Improvised Club from LOTR? It’s Shrapnel Blast that deals 4. It even has an IP-agnostic name.
Bolt and BOP!!!!!
If this stuff is legal in pioneer atog would be nuts
What a great video! One can only wish that Wizards would be as bold as Dev here with Foundations. The reality will probably be a lot more boring and safe 😔
