    Now, for a first car, what you want is cheap disposable fun. Miata, I agree with; fits the bill nicely.
    Good options:
    NA/NB Miata
    EF/EG/EK Civic
    Just about any Integra, even the RSX
    S2000 isn't quite in this category yet...but I think it will be within the next 10 years.
    AW11 MR2/naturally-aspirated SW20
    3rd (or now even 4th gen given their depreciation) F-Body car
    GM G-body platform
    SN-95 Mustang (even Terminators are probably affordable enough now)
    Ford Fox-chassis platform
    Ford Panther-chassis (If you don't mind autotragic)
    E30/E36 3-series
    E28/E34 5-series
    Air-cooled rear-engine Volkswagens (parts are still cheap because Brazil)
    S130 and Z31 Z-cars are still dirt cheap
    A70 Supra
    S13/S14 Nissan
    Volvo 240/740/760/900/any FR Volvo....just stay away from transverse-engine FF or 4WD (unless it's an 850 or something of that era) Modern Volvos are shit, but they used to be dead-nuts reliable.

    Been in the military three years now and have always loved cars. Was in Japan for two years, and now that I'm back in the states and have some money I went with my real first car I plan to build. I got an E36 and so far no complaints. I've worked on vehicles before so I'm not lost in the sauce completely...but I'm really glad with my purchase everything's been pretty straight forward so far. Naturally-aspirated RX-7's (especially carbureted 12A cars) USED to be good starter cars, but as time went on, the cars got old, parts got scarce, ethanol fuel came along (fuel corrosion problems), and the cars became ever more expensive as their numbers decreased. 12A housings last I checked were selling for $800 each new-old-stock (NOS)....and that was at least 4 years ago. Nowadays, FC and SA RX-7's are in the Porsche 944 territory...that is, you need at least one other example of the same car to use as a parts vehicle.

    • @WKZworks
      @WKZworks 6 лет назад +1

      PS: *DO NOT USE ETHANOL FUEL ANY MORE THAN YOU PRACTICALLY HAVE TO, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S CARBURETED!* The ethanol fuel will corrode the tank and eat away at the seal in the carb if you let it sit for too long. You either have to constantly run fresh fuel through it, *if for whatever reason you have to park it for an extended period of time, you will have problems!*

    • @nottobay6768

    I'm a young guy, and right now I have an '86 Accord. I really think it's a forgotten enthusiast car. It has double wishbones at all 4 corners and it takes corners like a champ. It only weighs about 2500 pounds, which really makes up for the not so powerful engine. Its got sweet pop up headlights, too, which really sold me on the car. I personally think the interior is one of the best interiors ever made. Of course there's Honda reliability as well. Awesome car.

    • @yadidimeanmaine
      @yadidimeanmaine 6 лет назад +1

      You can still find a drop-in ready JDM B20A DOHC PGM-FI 160hp engines for the '86-'89 Accord for about a grand before shipping.
      You can find forged pistons, rods, and upgrade head studs that fit this engine too so you can boost it heavily down the road to have a 400whp pump gas super-sleeper.

    • @jordanprice9285
      @jordanprice9285 6 лет назад

      The Clark well I think the accords are specifically overlooked cuz for some reason, an Accord is the last thing you think when modifications + Honda.. it's sad too cuz especially the J series engines can take a lot of power! And they look pretty awesome when you mod them! I'd get a 04 V6 Accord Coupe if I had a chance.. but it does make me sad that even the Prelude guys have more support than the Accord guys do.. :/

      There is a reason why in Europe we use primairly BMWs for drifting. All motor reliability. Great cars. Definitly recommend them to people, but in the end, I would never own one myself, because, like almost every German car, they simply lack "soul"

Yes not a DSM or anything like that but I will say, even though it doesn't have a turbo, it is reliable, Cheap parts as far as light mods like coils,brakes,I/H/E, and is pretty good on power since it has 200 and 205tq.. I have a 5 speed and it's pretty nice! I can keep up with Preludes, beat 1.8T golfs, and pretty much anything around 200hp or less.. all for no more than an average of 2500$ which is a steal!

    Pretty helpful video! On your last video I wrote a comment and got multiple replies, and so it was pretty clear rotary was not the way to go until I have more of my own life and income together. I've had these cars in mind- especially a Miata or a EG Civic. I was also thinking about a Porsche 924, since they would be good to learn on mechanically and have a cheap price tag. I imagine parts would be expensive, but not to the extent of a 911, 928, or a 944. Great video, and very helpful- opened my mind to the idea of a FB RX-7 in the future.

    Another one you should own and super fun and cheap to make fast get a 91-94 Nissan Sentra se-r or 95-98 200sx se-r. Autocross /drag racing they can be great. The stock sr20de takes boost all day and are cheap to boost or just do the Sr20det swap from a bluebird /pulsar gtir almost a direct bolt in . They can be easily swapped for under $1500. Or all motor Sr20dve van be swapped for under a $1k and can be just as quick with bolt-ons . You can probably pick a up a se-r for under $3k and don't have to worry about it being stolen like a Honda. I've owned 5 Sentra se-r's loved as much as I did my 83 rx7. 🤘🤘

    1: A fuel injected Honda older than '02 (especially a Civic or Teg)
    2: A '98-'01 F-body LS1 (when you wreck it the engine is worth more than you paid for the whole car)
    3: Ford Panther body 4.6 (used cop cars are cheap and fun)
    4: A Z33 Nissan 350Z (they're a better option for a street driven weekend drifter than a S13 at this point)
    5: A 2WD Chevy Silverado 5.3 vortec LS with a long bed (you'll NEED it as a backup/parts-runner when you're working on other projects down the line)
    6: An air-cooled VW transporter bus or pickup in beat-up condition (they're RIDICULOUSLY fun for being a such a slow vehicle and you'll learn to work on everything while ANY upgrade is very noticeable and rewarding)

    hEY I JUST GOT A MIATA, 1994 MODEL BASE, and i love how it drives. Im not planning to do anything crazy like 400 horsepower but i want to put a turbo on it eventually, improve the handaline and the grip in a way that i can put a solid 200 hp in the wheels. At the same time i have alot of plans for this car in the long run, i will be patient, i got it hella cheap so i have to replace a couple minor things like brakes and rear quarter panels. I think it is a great first car, it is my first car, and out of all my friends that have spent less then 3k on a vehicle on a car, i am the only one that has gotten a car that i was able to drive home with no problems and i have not had any problems with it realy. Im new to stick so ive stalled but other then that, she runs great. The pop ups work fine, and the MPG is nto terrible.

    My 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk is a lovely beast to be sure. Saved $15,000 for her over a period of 7 years all so that 17 year old me could buy it! I chose a Studebaker because I examined myself hard and determined that a car was like a finely tailored suit and should meet every aspect of who you are. A Big 3-mobile or an import just did not fit. A U.S. "Independent" did me nicely. From there it was a hard choice between all of them (AMC, Nash, Hudson, Studebaker, Packard, Kaiser, and Willys) but Studebaker won out simply because of its remarkable history. I hope to keep my GT Hawk - by the name of Daisy-Mae for a long time yet...

    First car NB miata, 2nd car NB miata 😁sad thing its got more and more expensive. I spent 3.8k€ for the car and 6-7k for parts.. if you would look now u wouldnt find any good miata for under 5k..
    Btw i live in germany so thats why the prices are so unrealistically high 🤓

    Id throw an E30 along with the E36. Ive learned a ton with my E30 and its been extremely easy to work on. Parts arent even expensive unless your looking for BBS, Hartge, MTech, etc parts. Dope vid btw!

    Yeah I started with a beat up Civic & sold her. Finally got myself a 2003 Miata & wow they are such nice weekend cars. They handle great & they look gorgeous. My only problem is that the passenger door is FUCKED. It looks like the previous owner must have hit it and decided to get a cheap fix they didn't even sand it down or paint it. I keep looking for a new one but everyone wants to over charge me for it. I think I'm going to search junk yards till I find one for my baby.

    The best bang for your buck and the best first car is the Mustang GTs from 2000 to 2010.. The 4.6 V8s... These motors are bulletproof... These cars are fast.. And depending on the year you can buy one fairly cheap and in great condition... Most mustang owners take care of their cars.. Since the release of the new 5.0 the 4.6 plummeted in price... For 5 to 10 thousand plus you can get a super reliable car that can hit 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds and hit a top speed of 150.. It will fucking destroy a miata or civic.. I used to have a 2009 Si sedan... I know how those cars run.. The genesis 3.8 can't do it either.. I owned one of those.. There's a reason I went back to the Mustang...

      Good luck i guess, i sure as hell wouldn't trust a 90's BMW. If it's a good quality BMW, your spending an arm and a leg, if it's anywhere below that, it's been beat to crap. I don't understand how a 20th century European car could be cheap to maintain. Reliable:big maybe. Cheap to maintain: nope. any time you do your own work, you save a ton, plus the hassle of trusting a dirt bag with your car, that literally 80% of the time don't even fix whatever you brought it in for. but parts for something like that, i can't imagine they'd be available

    • @250hdd
      @250hdd 6 лет назад +5

      240s are not cheap anymore, maybe 10 years ago but they're honestly not worth it anymore in my opinion. Where I live you are going to pay no less than 5 grand for a shitbox with beat up quarter panels , welded diff, 250k+ miles

    Just sizing up an Audi S8 (D2) as a daily, not my first ride, currently wrenching on my first - S5 T2, had 'leaky injectors' I assumed when I first got it. ABS was also leaking/weeping so P/O knocked $1k (CAD) off the price (1/5th, lol, was quoted at like $1500 rebuilt from japan, heh). Ended up popping it later and yeah, was quoted $4k for a reman with ridiculous turn around (I am in teh middle of atlantic)...

    The E36 325 with the m50b25 (with and without vanos) is extremely tunable. The m50b25 is basically the european version of a RB25dett, if you turbo it.

  • @jamesstaggs4160
    @jamesstaggs4160 6 лет назад

    E36 Bmw...fantastic car and currently cheap....but....parts are very expensive. The cooling system in them are garbage, so basically plan on replacing the entire thing. I've got a 93 325is and I absolutely love the thing, but if you pick one up plan on another grand or more for parts. The cheap 3 series are often driven hard and somewhat neglected. Not a ton of power but that straight 6 is super smooth. You can build the m50 or m52 into an American s50 for not a lot of $. More aftermarket support than anyone needs on the e36.

    Shouldn't any rotary owner learn and get experience with their engine? Always know you are spending more than the cost of the car and its a hobby. I always kinda like the RX8 but thought you would need a second motor and the awareness that rebuilds are part of the experience.
    Also keep a 1000 dollar toyota beater for getting around and then you are safe.

      Varies on:
      Owner and how much they care about their car
      Whether it's been undersealed
      Where it's lived, like near salt water, snow, near a limestone quarry (like where i live)
      The car itself and the grade of metal it uses
