Just got my Hulk 181 back from CGC and I got an 8.5! I’m new to collecting comics so this was my first submission and I thought it was a 5.0 haha I’m absolutely over the moon!
Should have sent them through Black Flag and you would have gotten a few 10s and 9.9s. As well as increase the price of your books by having them staple an acetate over the books and making them “variants”
Also, a requirement for the 9.9 and 10s is to have grammatical errors on it, like how Black Flag typed "In God we Intrust" vs "in God we trust" what a joke
Every CGC video you do about grades that don't make sense I keep losing confidence about finally sending in my keys for grading.. Just gonna keep buying graded copies and hope for the best about what's inside.. Thanks Bry..
I had a similar situation happen with my ASM 300 as they did with your ASM 296. My ASM 300 was in pristine condition. The worse case scenario would've been 9.4 and it came back an 8.0. I was pissed. I cracked it, pressed it again and it came back a 9.6 on the resubmission.
I have a GI Joe #1 that's biggest defect was something I wasn't really paying attention for. It has "torn Siamese pages" (something like that). I was so concerned with the exterior condition I plumb forgot to check the inside. This was extremely helpful. Thanks for posting it.
I am still learning to grade my books so this video is very helpful. Thanks. If I ever send any of my books to CGC, I guess I’ll just have to hold my breath…for months.
Would love to see ALOT more transparency from CGC on the grades. They've got to get better with grader notes. There should be a standard grader notes form with checkboxes and a comment section
Thanks for reminding me about white tiger! I've had that book on my radar for years but for some reason still don't have one. Maybe this will be the year!!
You should crack that black Spidey for science! That would make a good watch. Also, I wish I could make those 1-3 pm est auction starts. I have to work then. Still love the channel and store!
I feel you on the grades. I've been way off on my last 2 submissions. But the part that's most annoying is not having graders notes on those books that come back 9.6 or 9.4
I had two separate orders (15 and 16 books each) just return from CGC, each about 2 weeks apart. These books were mostly new books that were flawless IMO. I was hammered with mostly 9.0 and 9.2. I'm so discouraged by CGC.
I think they should be required to include graders notes for everything below a 9.8, when the difference between a 9.6 and a 9.8 could potentially be 1000's of dollars depending on the book and collector.
Really feel for you on that ASM. I think when you know what you are looking at and the notes are far from complete it can be hard to understand their logic
I think the slight stacking crease is what got you on the Silver Sable. They used to allow that on a 9.8 but I've had multiple disappointing 9.6's come back in the last few months where that was the only defect that I could find. So I think they've become more strict on that - or there's one dude who won't allow it and we both got him.
Argh! I just got killed on a CGC submission, too. Books I had at a 9.6 or 9.4 came out as 9.2s for no apparent reason. Ah well, at least the cases were intact. Glass half full.
On the ASM 296, I counted four separate creases on the back cover starting at 13:19. Two in the upper left corner, one a little further down and to the right and then a fourth on the top edge that sort of looks like a binding string impression, such as you would get from the bottom book in a pack bound with string. I think I have to concur with "moderate".
Very informative. Thanks for showing your books and giving your honest interpretation of what grades you have received. I feel from watching your previous videos you have a sharp eye for defects that will result in a certain grade.
Tiny/Light/Slight> Small/Minor> Medium/Moderate> Heavy/Major/Extensive is what I gathered from looking at hundreds of notes and looking over their various resources. BTW that impression on that 252 isn't too heavy of a lift, I've gotten out a lot worse without reversion.. just need to use a ball bearing and heat
I appreciate your efforts Bry. The grading process is fascinating in that the “grader’s notes” can be the same with 2-completely different grades.🤷🏻 Keep grinding bro!✌🏼
My X-Men Annual #14 came back with ‘moderate creasing to cover’ notes as well. There is NO visible issue with that book. It has an 8.5 grade, so not much reason to resubmit. The one thing was it was one of my first CGS submissions, so had them press. Obviously, THAT didn’t correct the issues described…..
So it makes you wonder, if you do your own press and clean compared to having CGC/CCS service added, what option would be better for getting the best grade at the time of encapsulation ....
Based on this, I think the Newsstand Edition of Marvel Team-Up #141 that I sent in will receive a 9.4, but I'm hoping for a 9.8! Thanks for all the knowledge you provide :)
I submitted 18 books, 4 custom labels. The custom label are suppose to be delivered today or tomorrow. All 4 got 9.6, couldn’t get 9.8 on any. And they were super clean. Still decent value in them, but still kinda blowj
You don't unjustly knock cgc but have no issues calling them out and i respect that. I'm curious to know your thoughts on the validity of them going forward knowing their responses to the c2e2 situation?
Just did my first CGC submission a few days ago, did my best to attempt and get 9.8, all moderns but now due to azetone-gate it's a wild west of grading
I just received a 5 book Modern submission, and got 4 9.8's, with 1 9.6. Sounds pretty good right? Well, the 9.6 was the nicest out of the 5, and I thought it had a real shot at a 9.9! Low and behold, the book now has a tiny chip/blunt in the lower left corner. Wasn't there before! I think CGC should admit it when they damage your book, and allow you to accept a refund instead of getting a 9.6 that isn't even worth the cost of grading!
This is just what I needed to see (after getting those books back I told you about in email that I was fairly sure were 9.8s and they came back 9.6s - and no clear idea why lol). I am stumped by that Moon Knight issue in your video, Bry.....
Good stuff!! I feel like I only hear the negative comments about cgc so it makes me wonder what % of your submissions get worse grades than you expect?
Great video Bry. I always appreciate your eye for grading and comparing the results to CGC. One this I would like is if you can do a more detailed comparison of the 2 Nova books and show why one is a 7.0 vs an 8.5. Thanks! Looking forward to the next video and WhatNot sale!
Love these types of videos specially as someone who just recently started submitting books to CGC. Helps me get a better feel for what books should get. Keep up the great work
Thanks for sharing Bry. CGC should at least give details about why a book gets the grade it does. Should be a requirement for every book. Seems CGC is grading much harder these days or that they're in such a hurry to catch up they don't put the time needed in for a correct grade.
Nice books. I purchased the Punisher War Journal #1 from your site today. Had it on my list for some time and finally pulled the trigger. As always, keep up the great work and hope you get high grades non stop. I received a 107 book submission and most came back 9.8 except most of SIKTCs. I noticed new bends and scuffs that were not there, oh well, you win some you lose some.
I think I'd crack that ASM 296 open and resubmit if there isn't any damage on the inside. Looks like you had some unfair grading. I was considering sending my ASM 265 in for grading, as it looks fantastic too, but now your grade has me worried to do it lol! Better luck next time, Bry.
There are millions of old slabbed comics that could get some grade bumps with a clean and press, but with the way they are grading books these days it might come back with a lower grade
It feels like that there should be a requirement for full notes on why it got the grade, granted it probably adds a bit to the process on their end, but it would help with judging consistency when it comes to judging the fairness of grading. At least a required detailed notes of certain era's of books.
Tough grades man. CGC is rough all around. I’m just getting books from my first submission back from July of last year that all got signed and had a disappointment myself
The Spec Spider-Man 9 seems about right to me. I would agree that it may be worth it to crack the ASM book. A 7.5 there isn't worth much. Have you ever reached out to CGC about a badly misgraded book to have them justify the grade? That may be a good experiment.
100% agree on grader notes. No excuse not to include why they graded it where they did. Side note, some of these spine ticks could be minimized of fixed altogether (non color breaking) with a few minutes and a tack iron. I just started pressing a year ago and I could fix some of those issues. Not trying to brag in the least I’m a rank amateur. But maybe your press guy needs to slow down a tad.
I just sent my first submission 4 weeks ago. Modern Tier. I've been hearing and seeing a ton of really bad inconsistencies with modern on RUclips. It's making me nervous.
I received a signed book back that had a 7.0 rating with the exact graders notes as your 7.5. I’ve looked at it so many times I feel like my eyes will pop out. It’s frustrating!
My last two submissions to CGC I feel like I got hammered. Books that got a 9.6 a year ago were coming back 8.5, 9.0. So discouraging. Makes me want to stop submitting honestly. All books professionally pressed too. At least I’m not the only one
These are amongst my favorite videos you do, nice video super informative..! Sorry that you got back grades in, but seems like luck is part of the game. I’m sure you’ve had bad books that’s come back better than expected, maybe?
CGC grading at the moment is a bit of a crap shoot; one or two of the graders seem to be grading particularly harshly and additionally they also fail to write graders notes which leaves you scratching your head like the 7.5. I had 3 x 25 book submissions in and one got hit really hard like yours too. Do you ever reach out to CGC and ask for review? I always scan the books before submission and post pressing/cleaning so that I can query with CGC in cases like your 7.5 here.
Could the defects be on the inside pages? I've watched alot of cgc unboxing videos trying to get as much knowledge as I can before my first submission, and I've noticed no one really talks about the interior of the book just the outside cover. I dunno maybe it's a stupid question 😂😅 anyways great content and keep up the awesome work!
When the graders are entering information about the book into their system, that field for Grading Notes should be mandatory and not let them save the entered information until all fields are filled out. Even for 9.8s and 9.9 , cause those still has a defects.
Same thing happened to my submission all 9+ and a 7.5 with no real good explanation for the grade given. Recently I can't distinguish between a 9.2 to 9.8 for modern submissions. I feel like it's a crap shoot regarding these modern age graders. Out of curiosity what does a a perfect sharp book with one 1 mm spine tic that breaks color grade?
I find CGC extremely inconsistent as of late , their quality control is horrible. For every ten books i send down two come back with an issue and i have to send it back, and until you take the human equation out of grading and we have robots do it all we’ll never know.
I've recently sent in books without a single color break & minor bindery issues come back as 8.5s while older books with miswraps I couldn't fix 100% come back 9.2 with "fingerprints" as well as books _fresh from Diamond_ come back as 9.4s after being wiped down (wearing gloves) with a cotton ball 🙄 I mean, there is *no* consistency at CGC anymore.
Just got my Hulk 181 back from CGC and I got an 8.5! I’m new to collecting comics so this was my first submission and I thought it was a 5.0 haha I’m absolutely over the moon!
That's great to hear. It is awesome to be pleasantly surprised by a higher grade.... Congratulations 👏
Thank you my friend! I appreciate it!
Should have sent them through Black Flag and you would have gotten a few 10s and 9.9s. As well as increase the price of your books by having them staple an acetate over the books and making them “variants”

LoL, true!
Man, I know y’all are salty, and I get why, but do we gotta drag it to Bry’s channel. The man is not involved with that fiasco.
I feel your pain. Grades lately have been ridiculous. I can’t figure them out.
Every CGC video you do about grades that don't make sense I keep losing confidence about finally sending in my keys for grading.. Just gonna keep buying graded copies and hope for the best about what's inside.. Thanks Bry..
New qr codes are mostly useless if there's no grader's notes provided
I had a similar situation happen with my ASM 300 as they did with your ASM 296. My ASM 300 was in pristine condition. The worse case scenario would've been 9.4 and it came back an 8.0. I was pissed. I cracked it, pressed it again and it came back a 9.6 on the resubmission.

I am a huge fan of your videos. You are an asset to the comic book community. Extremely informative. Thanks!
That 7.5 is ridiculous. That is Mint. And Awesome asm 252 MJ.

Always love the content! I’ve experienced the same grading surprises from CGC recently
Really feel for you on that ASM. I think when you know what you are looking at and the notes are far from complete it can be hard to understand their logic
White covers can hide those moderate creases really well.
Anything under a 9.8 should have grader notes!!! So, frustrating sometimes.
I think the slight stacking crease is what got you on the Silver Sable. Great selection of books! Shame about the inconsistent grades.

Way to stay positive my friend 😀

Wow, you got much better eyesight than me mate... 😳
Thanks for the walkthrough. It’s good to see a rational approach and analyze the result.
Very informative. Thanks for showing your books and giving your honest interpretation of what grades you have received. I feel from watching your previous videos you have a sharp eye for defects that will result in a certain grade.
Reminds me of my last modern tier submission 🤷♂️
The color on that ASM 252 is popping. Real nice it was a mark jewelers too
Tiny/Light/Slight> Small/Minor> Medium/Moderate> Heavy/Major/Extensive is what I gathered from looking at hundreds of notes and looking over their various resources. BTW that impression on that 252 isn't too heavy of a lift, I've gotten out a lot worse without reversion.. just need to use a ball bearing and heat

I have always liked the first appearance of silver Sable comic

Also whatnot letting people sell bootleg books now that marvel has acknowledged that they did not ok the changes made by black flag comics.
Just did my first CGC submission a few days ago, did my best to attempt and get 9.8, all moderns but now due to azetone-gate it's a wild west of grading
I always appreciate these videos. They are educational for my own PC.
Nice to see the slabs great show!!!
Great vid, I love when you show close ups!
I just received a 5 book Modern submission, and got 4 9.8's, with 1 9.6. Sounds pretty good right? Well, the 9.6 was the nicest out of the 5, and I thought it had a real shot at a 9.9! Great vid. Would love to see a tutorial vid on how to submit to CGC
I’m curious about that 7.5 too , maybe flip through it and check the insides
I have a copy of the Web of Spider-man #1 Newstand and shooting for the moon! Hoping to get a 9.6-9.8.... very plausible.
Huge book!
Great show and great books. I’m bookmarked and ready to go for your whatnot show tomorrow. Hoping to get at least 1 slab.
Another cool informative video man, can never soak up enough insite on the grading world!
Nice video. That ASM 296 is definitely a head scratcher. Maybe crack it and send back as a test???
Such a great learning experience.
Good stuff!! I feel like I only hear the negative comments about cgc so it makes me wonder what % of your submissions get worse grades than you expect?

Learning a lot about grading.thanks

Awesome video, I'm just learning and have a limited budget so love these videos
nice breakdown
Somebody needs to supply CGC with some Red Bull. They need to wake up. That Spidey book is gorgeous.
I just got my first submission back from Cgc. Prescreened 25 books. 19/25 are 9.8. But all Moderns. I wonder if they look super closer to older books.
That Spectacular Spider Man #9 in the 9.0 looked pretty good. That going up for sale?
Yeah I think it will be at whatnot tomorrow!
Where the 2 spine ticks on the Alias color breaking or were they defects that came back after sitting at CGC to long? Thanks for sharing.
No they were there before, color breaking
If I got a 9.0 back and there were no grader’s notes I would be more than a bit put off.
Tough grades man. CGC is rough all around. I’m just getting books from my first submission back from July of last year that all got signed and had a disappointment myself

Appreciate it Bry
My Tmnt came back 9.6 no graders notes. I know it has one tic but oh well what can you do? Always love the grading videos bro! I learn so much

These types of unboxing videos scare me enough not to submit my books as it’s a bit of a mission doing it from Australia
These are amongst my favorite videos you do, nice video super informative..! Sorry that you got back grades in, but seems like luck is part of the game. I’m sure you’ve had bad books that’s come back better than expected, maybe?
Definitely!
You sure you do not want to crack that case of the 7.5. It’s going to drive you crazy. Ha ha.
I just don’t think it’s worth the time and money…
CGC grading at the moment is a bit of a crap shoot; one or two of the graders seem to be grading particularly harshly and additionally they also fail to write graders notes which leaves you scratching your head like the 7.5. Maybe they mistook the webbing for creases on that ASM 296 😋
😂
Lots of pressable defects that can come out if you try.
I find CGC extremely inconsistent as of late , their quality control is horrible. For every ten books i send down two come back with an issue and i have to send it back, and until you take the human equation out of grading and we have robots do it all we’ll never know.
Great books. Little disappointing on some of the grades.
The ASM 297 had the creasing on the back cover, they are being very strict
Another great vid...just curious, did you press all of these?
Are your submissions based on expected value? So like a 9.0 isn’t worth submitting but a 9.4 of the same book is worth submitting?
I've recently sent in books without a single color break & minor bindery issues come back as 8.5s while older books with miswraps I couldn't fix 100% come back 9.2 with "fingerprints" as well as books _fresh from Diamond_ come back as 9.4s after being wiped down (wearing gloves) with a cotton ball 🙄 I mean, there is *no* consistency at CGC anymore.
