Mom and son catch a bunny chow at Gounden's Umbilo - A true institution of the Durban bunny chow!

- We visited Durban for a wedding and one of the must do things on our list was to grab a bunny chow at a true institution of Durban, Gouden's Restaurant and Take away in Umbilo. The bunny chows from this particular establishment holds many memories for our family as my late husband worked just down the road from the take away and so it became part of out Saturday routine. I would take the kids in to the library then my husband would pick us up and take us back to his workplace and then grab a bunny to have for lunch at the botanical gardens in Durban.
Generous and consistent, piping hot, and supper hot flavours make this one of the best bunny shows in Durban, year after year!

George Motz, the Burger Scholar on the Burger Show said that there's two things that make a take away meal - Nostalgia and Consistency. Goudens for us holds loads of nostalgia and is always consistent so it makes it the best bunny chow place in Durban! What's yours?

@@sandyharrod8831 thanks 🙏🏼 If you do visit you will not be disappointed but make sure you get there early cos they sometimes run of curry and then you’d have to wait for the next batch. Also Govender’s is nearby to you as well and you must also give them a try!
@@sandyharrod8831 Pranesh’s favourite place to visit is Warner beach. And when we lived in Newlands my husband used to go fishing at Nyoni Rocks and the tidal pool with the kids!

I haven’t had a bunny chow since I lived in Durban in the early 90s. The place that used to have the queue down the road was Patels, which made vegetarian bunny’s in West Str. if I remember right. They were delicious & cheap, about R2 or R3 😁. I could so eat that right now. The bread isn’t the same in U.K.
My husband used to take us to Patels in Durban quite often! Lovely vegetarian foods and their Sev and nuts with Boondhi was excellent as well! I think they were in Kismet Arcade.
Patel's is In Grey Street, Durban, indian part of town ,never seen Patels in West Street 🙄

Every year we go to visit South Africa and we make a trip to Durban, where I introduced my husband to bunny chows. In fact I introduced him to South African food and bunny chow is his favourite. This is a man who has never even tried curries. When I said I will make him fish curry he said what’s wrong with you South Africans? If you have the time and inclination, you’ll even curry the toilet paper 🤣
