I’d be an extra-concentrated ghost if I were a JW. First, I was an early baby and needed some blood-related products (preemies often can’t synthesize things they need in blood right away). Then when I was older and struggling with my mental health, I self-harmed over a few years, pretty regularly. Poor nutrition plus the stress that that was putting on my body meant that I needed, not whole blood but what they call “fractions”, for me to be actually healthy enough to make a change. But if I were a JW then, I wouldn’t have had a snowball’s chance in hell of getting mental health care, and would have dealt with potential cardiac issues rather than just being allowed to get iron infusions. Sure, the whole thing kind of blew up in my face at the time people found out, but I had someone saying that I needed X, Y, and Z, and got it. I think that’s part of why I’m fascinated with JWs. There but for the grace of (liberal, nice, I’m a radically inclusive Christian) go I.

My cousin got leukemia at the age of two. He would certainly be dead by now if he was a JW. Thankfully his parents are against them. So he is now 42. 😃
The J. ORG hates the idea of not having complete and total control. I'm sure plenty of JW's are wonderful people, the same can be said of any religion or atheist, but the way they're set up encourages extreme control and abuse, especially by older male members who have the most weight and control of things. I do not like Jehovah's Witnesses, I doubt I ever will but what I hate more is the rampant abuse from both their religion and its members, usually elders. I have and always will openly criticize these people of any religion that uses their religion as a shield to hide behind while harming others. We need to have higher standards if we expect respect from other people.
Very nuanced and thoughtful take. I believe Scientology gets away with so much today is the fight they won to be legally recognized as a religion. As with JWs, the CoS fought harder for that than anyone harmed by their practices (which shunning, isolation, and information control are all similar to JW practices)- hitting the “churches” in the pocketbook is really the way to go. Norway really dealt a blow to the power that the JW religion holds not only by stopping a huge source of revenue, but bringing harmful practices into global headlines.

Yeah makes you wonder how they'd twist it. I can see them making individual Witnesses paranoid to stand next to a cart in the streets. Even if they were still perfectly legal and just couldn't maintain tax exempt status.
It's like freedom of speech, freedom of religion is a good thing and keeping as few rules as possible lets anyone practice their own gathering and potentially work as a non-profit. I suppose we could use Amish as an example, people love them even if raising children in that environment might be more demanding or border on abuse but most would consider them perfectly harmless. What regulations could anyone make to go after JW and cults that wouldn't oppress the Amish or hurt the separation of church and state? If you have evidence you can prosecute any organization, but that takes time or you're basically China where you don't have any promises of free expression, China has no reason to support the Amish and would probably ridicule them through state media or mark them as extremists. If you get too involved making sure members aren't being isolated, that's more power to the state it could abuse and more oversight every gathering has to abide by, not ideal. I think Amish could survive in Sweden, it's not about the money and would just need an agrarian niche and work on homeschooling. Homeschooling now isn't allowed in Sweden so they'd have to concede some isolation, but all they're really risking is government funding which, they're already looking to make their own wood carving, barn raising and organic farm business so they don't need a handout. They don't even apply for social security if they don't want so if anyone is living in the world but not of it it's the Amish.
Even a Christian cannot brush aside the worship of Jehovah as God. In Revelation 1:5 the Son of called himself "Jesus Christ, 'The Faithful Witness.'" When on earth as a man he was a Jew, an Israelite, to whose nation the words of Isaiah 43:10 were written: "'You are my witnesses, ' is the utterance of Jehovah, 'even my servant whom I have chosen.'" Jesus demonstrated that he was a faithful and true witness of Jehovah God. His genuine disciples today must be the same kind of witnesses, Jehovah's.
Removal of US 501C3 Charitable Status for all religions that violate Human Rights needs to be brought to the attention of Political Representatives

Yes hard bans are a hard no, at least here in the states. Though I think we're overdue for some tax exception reform...

So you coming on the show or not John?
