OC. For the exhaust lav mic, use one with a 130spl level or better. The Sennheiser lav's that we both use have been the best I found. I personally run the Dji Action 4 with the Dji Mic 2 that wirelessly connect but always overlay the 32bit recording (I have a video showing why for those mics). The two biggest reasons I chose the Dji mics over the Rode mics are, 1) the Action4 is weather sealed. 2) I can detach the camera while riding (not recommended) for hand held shots or to switch between my helmet & handlebar mounts. Thank you for helping the motovlog community!
That is true & a bummer on Dji’s part. I haven’t had any issues using the locking Sennheiser mic with the non locking Dji mic but I do loop the cable around & underneath the clip for extra security.
You can get the same locking effect on the DJI Mic 2 by running the cable under the clamp. There is even a groove for the wire. Also no need for the cage and audio adapter. The Mic 2 will connect to the Osmo Action 4 wirelessly.
This is rad. The 2nd audio backup is epic. I've got so much footage with shot or missing audio that this would have saved. I've been using the Purple Panda for years... (4 of them since 2017) and Sony prior to that. Looks like I'll need to pick up some epoxy... that's my missing piece. Thanks Chase! 🎉 oh... I'm still using the original Osmo Action because it has been flawless for more than 5 years! Looking at the Ace Pro now...
Absolutely not a big deal with this lightweight stuff like this, but if the epoxy ever does become an issue for you, it's because you're mixing it on cardboard. The cardboard can absorb some of the properties of the epoxy and make it less of a pure mixture. Again, I doubt you'll ever have issues but something to think about if you ever use epoxy for something heavier. Unrelated to this video, but that's why some folks have trouble with body filler on car bodywork. Enjoyed the video man!
I am not a moto vlogger but I just got a new helmet so maybe I will convert my old one into a dedicated recording setup. I have the Rode Pro already, Sen microphone already, my action cam broke but I like using a 360 cam anyways. I usually dont mess with connecting the reciever just record to the transmitter and sync in post, but if your starting/stopping a lot of clips I can see having the audio feed could help with that. I like your audio mix idea, I use that when I record events I'll mic a room, and the talent so I can mix in post. The most crazy setup would be if I could actually find a way to record with my Rode NT-SF1 its a Ambisonic microphone so I can record a 360 video and actually bind the audio to full 360 so the sound moves with you as you look around, up down left and right full 360 audio. But that microphone is extremly wind noise sensitive. Could still rig up Binaural micrphones with a backpack though. So have Voice be mono and Ambient be Binaural would give a good effect of "being there" like in your helmet.
OC Love the detail, Chase. I've been using the DJI Osmo Acion 4 with the DJI Mic 2 to eliminate wires. Still dialing in my setup but I think I might be able to get away without a lav by just attaching the mic pack in the front of the Bell MX-9 helmet.
I've had great success with the purple panda but I always thought there was something I was missing and that sennheiser mic seems like the ticket. I also like the functionality of that rode recorder if it auto balances around your volume because screaming can clip if you're already pushing to the edge of the recorder which I do with my tascam. Great video sir🫡
thx- i did your. exact setup but standard helmets won’t allow the visor up and down too well with this setup, so i’m looking at the helmet you have here. I also find the cardo mic setup to be so good now, that it’s worth running a separate recorder for engine noise then adding them together in the edit process btw
Eventually your helmet has more tech than the iron man helmet. You will run into so many obstacles to figure out. But it’s worth the effort. And then you finally start your first hour of recording and you forget to switch on the audio receiver. Happened to me . Just embrace the chaos
YES, CHASE, BUT IF YOU GET DJI MIC 2 IT'S CONNECT VIA BLUETOOTH ON THE CAMERA AND TUCK INSIDE THE HELMET AND USE YOUR MIC PLUS THE CAMERA I'LL BE WATERPROOF + RECORDS TOO AND IS THE SAME QUALITY AS RODE MIC
I remember some of your early videos where the mic messed up (especially back with that horrible GoPro USB-C - 3.5mm adapter). I think I recommended getting a zoom audio recorder to handle the audio - which would've been a pain to sync back in post. So the back up recordings straight on the Rode is great, and even while you were talking about installing the transmitter I was going "YOU CAN PUT THE OTHER ONE ON THE BIKE ITSELF TOO AND HAVE AMAZING AUDIO!"
- First setup can be lot clearner with a short type c mic - Osmo 4 action can connect directly in camera to dji wireless mic, don t need a wireless receiver for that
@3:32 I guess priorities differ. As a casual rider who occasionally films rides I went for a super cheap tent guyline tether that I loop around the helmet strap.
Hi Chase, just for your info, you can (and have to) adjust the mic gain in the insta360 Ace Pro. Stock it's quite hot, at least for me, so I reduce the gain by -12db in the camera👍
So I just want my mic to pickup my exhaust sound and I do not want to only record my voice. I would rather have the exhaust sound over my own sound, I barely speak. With that being said is it better to put the mic near the exhaust on the bike or should I still put it in the helmet? I’m afraid it won’t pickup enough sound.
Really love getting some insider tips on this stuff. My only issue with your particular setup is you don’t quite get enough of that sweet sweet moto sound from the exhaust/engine. Edit on further review I see you are addressing this with the “pro” setup. Haha hell yeah Chase.
I like the way you showed how to mount the transmitter to the back of the helmet, I was trying to figure out where to mount it or even put it in my pocket and fish it from there. But this right here helped out a ton. Appreciate this video. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
This is a great setup! Thanks for mentioning the rode system, I'm already considering it. What about riding in the rain though? Adding the mic adapter removes the waterproofing of the camera and I'm not sure the rode mic is waterproof either
You know how I got rid of the wind noise in my helmet 15yrs ago when we used stick the camera in our helmets (ala M13)? I put clear tape over the mic; that's it. People thought I was doing voiceovers. My videos are now unlisted but can be found in a playlist on my home page. RUclips downgraded them to 480p 😒
Yea days were different back when. Glad to be making these videos now with all the upgraded equipment we have. Makes like much easier than when I started.
Have you tried the instamic bluetooth microphone? I haven't used it much yet, but after a few first tests, it works exceptionally well and saves you all the wires. It connects via bluetooth to the camera (it mimics being AirPods). It works quite fine with my Insta360 ONE RS. (However, it refuses to pair with the ONE X2, but there are reports that it works with the X3)
Very good video... I'd add that if it was me, I would add a 90 degree 3.5mm adapter to the mic connection so it pointed down rather than out to the side. It would make for a much neater connection, keeping the cable closer to the device rather than looping out like that in the first set up.
OC - Perfect timing Chase. I am just about to install my set up for my 1st ever . fyi...have not been getting any of your videos recommended or presented to me by youtube.
Did you get to try the DJI Mic 2 with your current setup ? From what i've seen it looks like your pro setup minus some cables as it syncs with the Action 4 through bluetooth if you were to use a single DJI Mic.
OC thanks for the tip. I started last year making videos for fun and started with the GoPro 10 and DJI mic. And because of you I have modified my ruroc 2.0 and now the 4.0 with inspiration from you 😂 so keep op the good work.
OC: great helmet and the setup. I was thinking of doing the same but with the DJI Mic 2 with the DJI action 4. The new mic can Bluetooth to the camera and it has 32bit flot. Can't wait see how the audio will come out with the two mics.
the real question is.. whats you camera settings?? You have said in the past 4k24 just want to confirm... I have a GoPro Hero 11 so what would you recommend? Thanks
Sick video man! There were some tips in here that I haven't ever thought of that are SICK! Also you can set the output gain on the Ace Pro :) I have mine set to -12db
A two mic wireless setup is how I've been doing my best sounding videos. Every bike is different though, so I've had some hits and some misses. Sometimes it's airbox induction that sounds best, others it's the exhaust. I use the DJI Mic setup tho. Good video though, I watched the whole thing.
My Sena headset method also works with the Rode wireless mics/and Dji's wireless mics. With those, I only use the rode wireless mics with my Motovlog if I am recording with one of my 360° action cameras only. What I do is use the 3.5mm camle from the Sena along with that Rode SC3 and plug it into my Rode wireless Go II and then clip the microphone of the rode to my riding jacket. I have cages with cold shoe mounts for all of my cameras so I will typically mount the reciever to the cage and plug it into the camera....This way....if I dismount the bike and are motovlogging, all I have to do is unplug the cables from the Sena and I automatically get to continue recording using the transmitter from my collar. It's a seamless connection while vlogging from the helmet to handheld 😉. Have any questions? ask away and don't forget to like his video as these videos do take alot of time to edit and record.
I've been Motovlogging since 2018 - nothing fancy. I've been using GoPros but they are very finicky. I was out riding today with four Gopros on my bike and they kept turning off. And one of my GoPro hero eights is now cycling on and off constantly So I'm looking at maybe getting some of those DJI action cameras . Thanks for giving me some great ideas with this video
Thankyou! I'll install my mic like what you did in this video. It s suck for me who motovlog touring around city without any sound that out from my mouth.
I am glad to say that I based my channel name on chase's channel name! Just because I love to live on two wheels and also love and learn a lot watching his videos, good fan. About the go pro camera position, my favourite and the best way in my opinion is by fitting it upside down on the helmet front chin so I have better angle ajustment options to great video takes with wide view to the audience! God bless you all.
I have found that connecting my lapel mic delivers better talking audio while keeping the outside helmet noise minimal so I have more control in the edit of how much outside noise I want or dont want.
@@chaseontwowheels no yeah agree .. I had just begun testing the purple panda mic plugged into the receiver(dji mic2) .. but motorcycle accident stopped it.. will be back with results later ..
I use a replacement, 6" gaming mic. It's perfectly long enough to come from the camera (GoPro), and under the chin guard. I poke four tiny holes in the wind block hard piece that is at the inside front of the chin guard. These let me use two tiny zip ties to secure the mic centered on my mouth, and slightly below my lips. With a foam cover, the mic pics up just a little wind noise, and the "P-P-P" while talking. With a cat butt, there is no extra noise, but it tickles my nose :) I have no extra wire, and no need to wrap wire around and around the camera mount, leaving me a clean set-up. I also use the Chin Mount brand of camera base, as it has a larger "foot" that conforms and adheres to the helmet.
Nice setup man! Thank you for sharing. But little bit curios, can you capture sound from your Cardo to get the sound of communication through Cardo with your group? I guess that would be nice to add.
That's such a pro set up! I currently use a chin mount that I can strap in and out, so not as high level as the DIY one you made. Might try with my old Shoei someday. By the way, you mentioned the Ace Pro lack of mic level, but in my camera I can actually set the dB level without problem. I have the latest firmara though. And I also own the DJI action 4 but I had several audio issues in the past with microphones and I just don't trust it anymore. Good camera for the large FOV but not as reliable and all-rounder as the Insta360.
Heyhey, just a question. Why not record your voice through cardo? There's a feature for it in the app. I know there's an extra step in editing but it saves on adding extra equipment to the camera and mics to the helmet. Just less clutter
Great video! Thank you! I’ve been making videos for years but switching from tuner cars to bikes is a game changer in the audio world. I am running the GoPro 12 Pro Black and the latest Rode Wireless Me (the one with a mic in the receiver and the transmitter). I have yet to make a published video with the new helmet set up but so far the auto gain and dual mic set up opens the door for clear audio and engine / exhaust noise on my Streetfighter V2. (*I actually fit the transmitter under my cheek pad in my Shoei and curious to see how it goes without a separate vlogging mic - my bike is loud AF!) Next goal has to be to clean up the look though… your helmet set up is definitely better than mine was, but mine will be clean and stealthy. Thanks for this! 🤘🏼
Nice setup with the wireless receiver/transmitter :) Questions:- Does the microphone feed back into the Cardo so whoever you are riding with can hear you too? And, how is it possible to record (with high quality) those in your riding group ... You mentioned the wireless receiver can record 2 sources. Are they both stereo and would that be a possibility to record the 'group chat' from the Cardo?
Just wanted to ask how do you manage to vlog when you are connected to intercom. Does all the people connected to your intercom here what you are recording?
Chat with Omni Moto, suggested full face helmet, thinking of video logging my spyder travel. I currently have a Shoei neotec 2 modular with cardo pactalk edge comm. System, suggested I check your videos as well as get your thoughts would be appreciated.
I use your pro setup with the Wireless Go 2, and I'm thinking of upgrading to the Wireless Go Pro especially because the 32 bit recording promises no clipping and that's the main problem with those microphones, they are way to sensitive.
OC: I would love to see a secondary rider use the second transmitter to see how it would hold hold up with traffic. In the end the audio would still work since even if the wireless part fails, it would be recording on board.
I have been looking at a similar set up as I have the Rode wireless go 11 but was not sure on this set up how you get your voice recording during a trip. The Rode wireless receiver on the front picks up audio from the transmitter at the back of your helmet, so road, exhaust audio, how do you connect your voice audio into the system? Or do you
Thank you the killer audio set up! 🙌 do you record conversations on your Cardo when riding with others? I’m thinking of getting that conversation recorded other than the app recording and post sync.
Like a lot in this group I have just set up the DJI Action 4 with Mic2 no wires bit of metal plate works a treat still get some wind noise around 70mph but I think that’s the Ruroc 4 which is causing it😎😎
Are there specific things to consider when it comes to modular helmets? I'm gonna start riding, sometime within the year, and I'll be getting a modular helmet. I wanna start making content, but Idk if I should mount the camera on the front or side ...
Hey Chase. Awesome Video brother. Question though... Since you are using the Dji ACTION 4 and you are using the Wireless RODE mics. How come you don't just go with the DJI Wireless mics?? They have excellent wind noise canceling and you can connect the receiver directly into the camera without the need of the mic adapter or the camera cage. Is there a benefit over how you're doing it? I have the DJI Action 4 and the Insta360 ace pro with the DJI Wireless mic 2. I sometime run the Wireless DJI mic in my helmet so its truly wireless. Other times i connect my Rode Lavalier II Premium mic and just put the DJI mic in my jacket pocket. The Lavalier II by Rode is $99 and the DJI mic 2 setup (2tx + 1 RX + case) $349.
Great video! have been recently been finding my footage on wide has been taking videos more of my tank and less of the surroundings. Any tips on this? Frustrating as taken so much footage as not huge amount of usable content. Can you help?
Idk if it's still the case, but I've heard a lot of negative reviews on Ruroc. From not being tested properly to the fit and finish being half assed. I love the way the look but just from what I've heard. It's turned me off from going with their brand. I was hoping to get some insight on what you all think it. Or another brand that I should go with that's similar to their style. That's been tried and true. Thanks

@@quentin.aventure i have both so i can say dji mic 2 option better, less cables
Nice vid thank you. Better microphone options include the Cardo with Ace Pro, which is cheaper and more accessible for those who already have a Cardo.
If you want bike audio this won’t work… I use this and it works fine unless I want bike audio or to listen to music
Ace pro also have a gain adjustment
I remember some of your early videos where the mic messed up (especially back with that horrible GoPro USB-C - 3.5mm adapter). I think I recommended getting a zoom audio recorder to handle the audio - which would've been a pain to sync back in post. So the back up recordings straight on the Rode is great, and even while you were talking about installing the transmitter I was going "YOU CAN PUT THE OTHER ONE ON THE BIKE ITSELF TOO AND HAVE AMAZING AUDIO!"
So the wireless mic is what you need when using a modular helmet ?
- First setup can be lot clearner with a short type c mic
- Osmo 4 action can connect directly in camera to dji wireless mic, don t need a wireless receiver for that
@3:32 I guess priorities differ.
You can set the db for external mics with the ace pro. Its in the settings. Mine is set to -12db and works great
So I just want my mic to pickup my exhaust sound and I do not want to only record my voice.
Thanks bro your info, make me still passion on motovlog although in low budget, best regards
Awesome and informative bro! I think I learned something that I will be using in the future to improve my setup!
OC-Thank you! Please do camera settings video!
Thanks for sharing! I will test your setup and hope to be able to make high quality riding videos too.
This is a great setup! Thanks for mentioning the rode system, I'm already considering it. What about riding in the rain though? Adding the mic adapter removes the waterproofing of the camera and I'm not sure the rode mic is waterproof either
Cant wait to ditch my Gopro 😒. Contemplating on the Ace Pro & DJI Action 4 🤔
Closing that front vent was a game changer for me.
totally agree
You know how I got rid of the wind noise in my helmet 15yrs ago when we used stick the camera in our helmets (ala M13)? I put clear tape over the mic; that's it. People thought I was doing voiceovers. My videos are now unlisted but can be found in a playlist on my home page. RUclips downgraded them to 480p 😒
Yea days were different back when. Glad to be making these videos now with all the upgraded equipment we have. Makes like much easier than when I started.
All that on a ruroc
So the Rodemic mounted externally to the back of the helmet records your voice perfectly without wind noise or anything?? Amazing video BTW loved it!
Have you by chance figured out how to get the audio from a group ride (Cardo) to link to with the DJI Action 4 camera instead of the Go Pro?
OC - Perfect timing Chase. I am just about to install my set up for my 1st ever . fyi...have not been getting any of your videos recommended or presented to me by youtube.
This is why we have an email list now because we can't trust YT. Good luck on that setup!!
My DJI Action Cam 4 uses a case from Talesin, does using a mic adapter require removing the Talesin case???
DJI now offers Wireless Mic 2 Bundle with Action 4
Have you noticed reduced stabilization when using ND filter?
Thanks
And one of my GoPro hero eights is now cycling on and off constantly
So I'm looking at maybe getting some of those DJI action cameras . Thanks for giving me some great ideas with this video
Thankyou! I'll install my mic like what you did in this video. It s suck for me who motovlog touring around city without any sound that out from my mouth.
What made you decide to go with the Røde mic instead of the DJI wireless mic system?
Is the audio set up still good for water resistance? Like being under heavy rain?
I am glad to say that I based my channel name on chase's channel name! Just because I love to live on two wheels and also love and learn a lot watching his videos, good fan. About the go pro camera position, my favourite and the best way in my opinion is by fitting it upside down on the helmet front chin so I have better angle ajustment options to great video takes with wide view to the audience! God bless you all.
So two mics one for cardo and one for cam? That's what I was confused about... Thanks for clearing it out
Why not just use the dji mic 2 if ur using a rode mic with an action camera.. it’s less cables since u can connect the action 4 and dji mic 2 ?
I have found that connecting my lapel mic delivers better talking audio while keeping the outside helmet noise minimal so I have more control in the edit of how much outside noise I want or dont want.
@@chaseontwowheels no yeah agree .. I had just begun testing the purple panda mic plugged into the receiver(dji mic2) .. but motorcycle accident stopped it.. will be back with results later ..
Thanks for the recommendations I’ve just ordered myself the purple panda mic from Amazon hopefully it’s as good as you say
With a cat butt, there is no extra noise, but it tickles my nose :)
I have no extra wire, and no need to wrap wire around and around the camera mount, leaving me a clean set-up.
Quality sucks
@@S2keyz ahh interesting. Guess then it makes sense for someone who's serious about making videos
(*I actually fit the transmitter under my cheek pad in my Shoei and curious to see how it goes without a separate vlogging mic - my bike is loud AF!)
Next goal has to be to clean up the look though… your helmet set up is definitely better than mine was, but mine will be clean and stealthy.
Thanks for this! 🤘🏼
Nice setup with the wireless receiver/transmitter :)
Questions:-
Does the microphone feed back into the Cardo so whoever you are riding with can hear you too?
And, how is it possible to record (with high quality) those in your riding group ...
You mentioned the wireless receiver can record 2 sources. Are they both stereo and would that be a possibility to record the 'group chat' from the Cardo?
The AcePro can adjust the recording level. Go to "Settings", "General", "External Mic Gain", then you can go from -18 db to + 6 db.
OC. Nice setup. Do you use the cardo as an intercom or for phone? If so how do you set that up? Does your mic pickup the music you're listening to?
You're awesome for this. I think the cost of this is worth the sacrifice. Thanks a bunch
Just wanted to ask how do you manage to vlog when you are connected to intercom. Does all the people connected to your intercom here what you are recording?
Great video of your setup. Dont you get problems with fogging after taping up those vents?
Liked and subscribed.
Wouldnt be the DJI Mic 2 the better solution?
Does your mic pick up the music playing out of the Cardo speakers?
Great video and information. Quick question, how much of this is waterproof?
Chat with Omni Moto, suggested full face helmet, thinking of video logging my spyder travel. I currently have a Shoei neotec 2 modular with cardo pactalk edge comm. System, suggested I check your videos as well as get your thoughts would be appreciated.
Look at Hollyland Lark series of wireless mics, and you own't need the extra 3.5mm cable up front, it'll just plug in using the USB-C.
Where did you get the chin mount for the camera? If so will it fit onto a go pro hero 11?
I use your pro setup with the Wireless Go 2, and I'm thinking of upgrading to the Wireless Go Pro especially because the 32 bit recording promises no clipping and that's the main problem with those microphones, they are way to sensitive.
Do you have an alternative for Rode wireless pro? more budget than RODE
Thank you
OC: I would love to see a secondary rider use the second transmitter to see how it would hold hold up with traffic.
Or do you
Wow, I didn't know about the gain feature on the action 4. I may have to switch teams and get one.
Thank you the killer audio set up! 🙌 do you record conversations on your Cardo when riding with others? I’m thinking of getting that conversation recorded other than the app recording and post sync.
Shouldn't the wireless transmitter mounted inside the helmet ? How does it capture audio from outside
What about the mic inside the helmet? Is the mic on the out side of the helmet good
Like a lot in this group I have just set up the DJI Action 4 with Mic2 no wires bit of metal plate works a treat still get some wind noise around 70mph but I think that’s the Ruroc 4 which is causing it😎😎
Could just use the Cardo mic with the Ace Pro
You can...but I'll stick with this. My goal is for highest quality, not easiest option. I'll make a video on that and dig into it.
Great video. How do you keep battery to last longer? I use gopro, and I get 45 to 60 minutes of recording
Great video! have been recently been finding my footage on wide has been taking videos more of my tank and less of the surroundings. Any tips on this? Frustrating as taken so much footage as not huge amount of usable content. Can you help?
What settings do you have with an ND Filter?
Idk if it's still the case, but I've heard a lot of negative reviews on Ruroc. From not being tested properly to the fit and finish being half assed. I love the way the look but just from what I've heard. It's turned me off from going with their brand. I was hoping to get some insight on what you all think it. Or another brand that I should go with that's similar to their style. That's been tried and true. Thanks
with this setup.. how do you clean/wash the helmet after some use?
