Is there anything that Layne can't do? His arrangements are always brilliant. His beatboxing is exceptional. When he sings, his voice is just so beautiful I melt. And now the violin???
It saddens me how many musicians forget the power of silence. The "rest" is one of the most often used, and underrated, musical notations. An entire orchestra at rest, then suddenly (or even not-so-suddenly), hitting the mark with a return to sound, can be just as effective as filling every moment with sound. VoicePlay uses that device to fantastic effect here. Bravo!
I keep coming back to this song (and Oogie Boogie Man, tbh) because of the power of the harmonies. Especially the minor harmonies and the supreme voice control required to shift them mid-note like ya'all are doing. And Lainey rocking that violin! This isn't my favorite song, but for the sake of pure harmonic power and precision, I don't know I've heard better.

Speaking of which, the violins in this? Perfection. I was already impressed with Layne and then THIS just floored me that he can play violin like this too?! It's not just that the music is amazing - which it freaking *_is,_* omg - but the costumes, the entire scenes you set so every one of your videos is a feast not just for the ears but also the eyes and the imagination- like the absolute best traits of musical theatre distilled down into short yet perfect vignettes of glorious fantasy. Thank you! It's been rather slow going through their old songs since almost every one I listen to becomes my new obsession, but it's a wonderful journey!
Pretty sure this one is a C2-B1, layered with the fifth above it (G2-F#2). Because the ratio of perfect fifths is 3/2, the constructive interference between the sine waves creates a new wave with a wavelength of half the lower of the fifth (in this case C2-B1), making it sound like the resulting note is C1-B0. If you listen closely with headphones or a good sound system, you can hear both notes. Another great example of this is on Home Free and Chris Rupp's "What Child is This?" in the last section, when Tim sings a C#2 and Adam Chance sings a G#2 and the resulting note sounds like a C#1 (this is followed up by a perfect C#3 and C#2 octave which sounds much different). I asked Chris about that one and he told me it was a C#2. This is good stuff either way!
That sweet violin is genius against the grittier nature of the song and video. Voiceplay is outstanding in the story telling with their vocal perfection and timing.

Each one of them are incredible but the ensemble of each one is magnificent, exciting and much more, because they all have something to contribute and that is what makes this group perfect. I honestly do not think there is a better member than the other since they all have a quality that makes them special and when they are brought together the purest representation of harmony is formed because they are all very good at what they do and know how to work together. In conclusion, there is nothing better than the five of them together or even one of them separated because they all complement each other and benefit each other.

To give a reference to how low Geoff can now go. He hits a very well toned B0, the lowest note on a 5 string bass guitar. Yes the bass guitar that had an extra string to go lower and he hits that note. That’s a note I would rarely hit live because usually doesn’t always sound nice tonally when you use it on a device made to play low. But here Geoff is clear clean sound with great tonal quality.
It was digitally altered in this recording. They used an undertone boost on a subharmonic clip to get that sound. They even said so live. He could very easily chest fry that line with enough warmup
@@leopirdas6577 no that was about the A0 people were talking about, they confirmed that that particular note was altered not the B0 which is very well in his sub harmonic register
I have to take a moment to appreciate Laynes level of concentration to be able to beat box while playing the violin! I get distracted by squirrels while having a conversation 😂 haha

Voiceplay is the Greatest of All Time!!! Now I've gotta go and find my jaw bacause once it hit the floor I lost it! Layne is now #VioLayne
KO from ptx cellobox :D
@@KingChocoo tru
😂😂😂 you’ve made my day...btw you found it?
@@destamuse i tried to put it back in but their next video vaporized it 🤣
Tqueenboss1_Infinity which one? You mean Trapped???? If so 💯 agree
@@leopirdas6577 Jesus christ
Thats intense as he'll to do
*hell
@@leopirdas6577 no that was about the A0 people were talking about, they confirmed that that particular note was altered not the B0 which is very well in his sub harmonic register
I have to take a moment to appreciate Laynes level of concentration to be able to beat box while playing the violin! I get distracted by squirrels while having a conversation 😂 haha
These guys always inspire me, eachin different ways:
1. As a percussionist, I look up to Layne with his intricate rhythm.
2. As a bass, I look up to Geoff and his vocal technique, which has made my vocal range expand lower.
And 3. As someone who has perfect pitch, the overall harmonic overtones of Eli, Earl, and J are absolutely flawless, please keep up with what you guys are doing and do not change a thing.
Adam Rupp and Kevin Olusola are awesome percussionists as well :P
What a weird way to flex
Didn’t know perfect pitch had so much to do with hormones! That’s news to me.
As a fellow percussionist, I relate
im a bass too and ive lowered my range because of geoff too
Thank you Layne for arranging this! We now have Layne AND J. None playing violin, Geoff's new lowest note, and a song that gives you chills when Layne drops the beat!
As a fan of Imagine Dragons and Violin in pop music, I approve this cover.
Voiceplay is like fine wine. Just getting better and better with age.
Ed Boyer did an insane job working with all of your unique and talented voices! Yall are crazy good!
Every one in Voice Play are extremely talented. Love listening to the harmonizing. ❤
Love this group so much. Get it J. None and Layne with the violins
I showed this song to my sister (on Spotify, so she didn't see the official video), and she asked me if Lindsey Sterling played with them. When we figured out that it was Layne, my reaction was: WTF, THIS GUY'S NOT HUMAN!!!! This was so incredible, great job guys!!!
Not sure how I missed this cover but WOW!!!
your voices are so genius, all my respect from vienna austria 🇦🇹
I can't believe I'm just in the last couple of weeks discovering how amazingly talented this whole group is! Layne slayed me with the violin in another video and I recently found this one! J plays too? I love acapella. I sang it myself for over six years. 4 high school, 2 college. But Layne's violin is just out of this world. J's is nice too. Thank you guys for all you give us!
OUTSTANDING! Great Foot Stomping. Love it when Layne plays his violin! Outstanding close harmony!. Thank. you for including the lyrics! 100 stars out of 100! BRAVO!
My favorite part 0:00-3:26
Wow. Anyone else NOT know he plays the violin too?
This was really well done and an extremely pleasant surprise!
Who? Both J. None and Layne play it. Layne played the Violin since he was a kid. I forgot about J. though.
Wait. That’s Layne with the violin? O.o what can’t he do? My goodness. The entire cast ARE talented!! ❤️
Wow! The violín playing, spectacular! The singing, remarkable! And the background music, stupendous! ❤😊
So I have no idea how I missed this one when it came out....... But HOLY CRAP!!!! I mean, I'm used to being blown away by VoicePlay. But then Layne, and J.None playing violin to boot? I'll say it again. HOLY CRAP!
Because Layne wasn't already insanely talented! Beatboxing AND playing the violin at the same time!
Oh, and by the way Layne can play the violin a little. 🤯 Amazing!
I’m stuck in lockdown AND having to do home schooling as I’m from Sydney Australia and my depression was returning but THIS song and Geoff Castellucci’s Bare Necessities is what’s motivating me and helping me cope with it especially with having to home school maths, THANK YOU Voiceplay
And here I was thinking I couldn't possibly be anymore wowed by y'all! Especially J None and Layne, the violin took me by a most welcome surprise! Stunningly gorgeous arrangement and performance as always, playing to everyone's strengths to make the song into something glorious
WOW the VIOLIN is out of this world. Love it!
EXCELLENT, Voice Play! Great foot stomping. Love it when Layne plays the violin. Outstanding close harmony! BRAVISSIMO!
i love the song warriors but my reaction to this is just WOAH!
Layne beat boxing WHILE playing violin 😮 enough already guys 😂 we can’t take it!
Voice Play is my absolute favorite a capella group! Heck, maybe even favorite music group! Every single member is extremely talented and shine in their own way while somehow blending together so amazingly! Thank you guys!!!
Glad to see you guys are back home from the Disney Cruise
I love the unique turn they took on this, especially the slower tempo. It makes it more eerie, and gives you time to really listen to the words.
Love this. They have such great voices. 👍 love violinist.
WOW!!! I absolutely love this arrangement Layne. Didn't know you and J. None played violin. I played for 12 years but not as well as you. Great job.
