Excellent, great job explaining the difference in quality and finishing. 🧐

Surprised you didn’t even mention the pickups. Mexican Standards had those double bar ceramics they used for like 20 years, the newer Players Series are now alnico.

Thanks for the vid, it was interesting.
IMHO the new Player Series does not quite match the old American Standard. Falls short by a few percentage points in wood resonance for player feel. Never weighed them side by side but would not be much in it in my experience. Both are very capable real-world gigging guitars and to that extent, you could perhaps argue the old American was overkill (the manufacturer would like that take I guess LOL).
Also IMHO the new Squiers do not match the old MIM overall. The bodies are overall likely to be lighter (check each time) and hardware fine, but the necks are just not as robust feeling in my experience. Home use with the occasional local gig with nothing too heavy string wise (latter fine for most of us anyway) is the Squier (CV anyway) target audience, I think. The old, albeit heavy, MIM was an out and out road warrior and boat anchor combined.

Well, FWIW I weighed a few guitars I have. I was very surprised to find my 06 MIN MIM strat weighed 8.1 lbs which is the same as my about same years Epi Std LP, American Std Strat with an also same era Gibson LP Studio a creditable 3oz less...The MIM is not the boat anchor I remembered and the American Std is closer overall than my eyes (memory) suggest.......The American is more resonant I think and overall better but the MIM gets the job done and very well and at a way less price point. FWIW my CV Tele comes in at 7.2 lbs (I understand they have had very varying weights though and I have heard of some weighing 10 lbs which I would have rejected)

A real guitarist could make either one of these sound good. The Player isn’t going to make a shitty guitarist sound any better….. But they might get bonus points for looking pretty at that open mic or blues jam.

A great guitarist can make any guitar sound great. It is a well-known fact that everyone isn't above average.

Wood. You know…wood. The body is made of wood. What kind of wood? Oh, that’s right, you said wood. *click ; ) …got it. Really? Yes. I got it.
