    This is literally the BEST comparison between new Strats and older MIM Strats on the internet. I don't know why it's buried all the way down in the search results.

    This is THE best comparison of the 2 Strat generations that I have seen so far on RUclips (and I've seen a lot of videos the last couple of weeks). First of all, you get a guy who knows how to play and use chords, not just a wannabe shredder. I'm a rhythm guitar player first, and a soloist second. It was refreshing to see a player who knows how to play a wide variety of chords and play rhythm in addition to fancy solo guitar licks. I can't find a used or new old stock Standard......so I'm going to get a new Player model, in buttercream finish very soon. If I DO find a used/NOS Standard, however, I'm fixing to buy in the future when I come across one. It has its place in my sound collection and I like ceramic pick ups. Thanks for posting this comparison video......great job!

    Standard seems to be a better all around tone. Would set well in the mix with a live band. Player series is so spanky and full of treble. Really cool vintage tone. As other comments have said you can just change tone nob on player to dull that top end. Great comparison video.

    Great comparison video with nice side-discussion. You did a great job clearly labeling the differences between the guitars, and I was a big fan of the swipe-over comparisons - made it easy to distinguish the differences in sound. Great playing as well. Well done!

    The standard fender stratocaster mexico sounds exactly twice the size of the player. And the reason is not only the pick ups but above all else. The six-screw bridge is definitely another story!

    Great comparison. I picked up a 2019 HSH a couple of weeks ago. Just so everyone knows the pickups that the Player currently is using are the same as the American Standard before they changed to the Fat 50s. The electronics are the same components that are in the American Standard. The bridge is also an American bridge. The saddles are marked Fender and don't have metric screws, they're imperial. Basically other than the neck, Fender has built a lower price American Standard. So far it's been a great instrument. Keep up the good work Gas TV!

    I really like how you compare the difference between two Fender Stratocaster, especially in clean tone. To me, I play Fender Stratocaster in the clean tone more than engaging the drive tone, or just use some TS9 or Boost to have some crunchy sound. Keep going and I am looking forward to seeing more video from you!!

    I've got 3 MX Teles, 1st was a beat up old 2011, 60th ann' Black / maple for cheap. Next was a 2017 Olympic? White / maple, then a Player Butterscotch, Blackguard, Maple. I really like all of them, equally but the Player definitely has "More of that Tele Thing"! Good comparison video. I have 1 MX Strat, a Jimmie Vaughan Signature with D Allen VooDoo Blues p'ups. Frickin Awesome! I play that more than my "Rarely Played" 09 US STD, Sunburst maple. Scared to scratch it! I should do a comparison with a couple of MIJ 80s Squier Strats. Looking for a MIJ Tele now.

      Thanks for the kind words. We are trying to make these reviews as candid as possible to give you guys our feedback as working musicians. We figure it’s more valuable and fun to share our personal experiences and opinions rather than just do a straight comparison. We didn’t open up the back of the Player Series to check how many springs were in there. From another video we saw 3 springs that come as standard (I think).

    Guys...you lost me a 12.20...The Standard pickup is not a humbucker that buzz's....Both Ceramic and Alnico single coils will outshine a humbucker.....on everything from recorded track to live....But thanks for you video

    • @Jeymez
      @Jeymez 2 года назад

      not true at all, so not they don't outshine it, single coil pickups generally are brighter than humbuckers, but during a recording they sound the same. Live is different than in studio, but in a live situation single coils can be heard louder through a speaker.
      most bands run there guitar through pedals and amps, but in studio a Les Paul cuts better in a mix. with a Strat you have to make a few adjustments so that your not overpowering everyone else. there are better single coil pickups that helps eliminate some brightness.

    Cheers

    • @GASTV
      @GASTV  6 лет назад +2

      Whether you will prefer one guitar over another always has an element of subjectivity. Objectively speaking, there are number of significant improvements in the Player series over the Squier classic vibe: the satin neck, 2 point tremolo, 22 frets, tone control for bridge pickup. The pickups for both are Alnico V but my recollection (and Fender’s description) of the Squier is that it has a warmer, mid-range sound. The Player series pickups are likely voiced differently and are really spanky. It’s been a while since I played the Squier Classic Vibe but it certainly didn’t make me stop and think that I was playing something special they way the Player series has. Fender has done something really nice with the Player series strat.

  • @jaywilldoit

    I bought both the standard and player, after a while, I decided to sell the player and keep the standard. The player seems like a better guitar than the standard, however, it is trying to be too perfect, too clean, too nice, too shiny, with the brand new alnico 5 and blah blah blah, all that's good and all, but I prefer the character, attitude and imperfection of the standard. Compared to the player, the standard is stupid loud and bassy, but you just need to dial down the volume and the low mid on your amp, then you can get that vintage tone.

    • @jaywilldoit
      @jaywilldoit Год назад +1

      Imo, there is no point in playing the standard with all the eq's pointing at 12 o'clock on your amp, you have to dial down the bass and the mid, because it is way too much on these Mexican standards, to the point that it masks all the higher frequencies and everything else. But as soon as you dial down the bass and the mid, you'll hear the familiar "straty-ness" that people talk about. It's not that complicated really. But I like the vibe on the standard way more, the player is too clean and vanilla.

    I'm firmly happy with the MIM standard. I have the 2017 MIM FSR Gilmour vibe ...It has the warmer tones but the one you have may just be dialed different than mine as mine is not quite as warm but not as bright and over twangy like the player. Which most preferred. I am a strange one i suppose. I love gilmours work...I like to stay closer to that. Most of his sound warmer and way less twangy. Strange too as he uses usa strats with his own pups which are a few different variants over the years. I do want a a tele next. Modern player. With the hss one lipstick. Nice.

    • @graphicartdude
      @graphicartdude 3 года назад

      I agree Robert. I much prefer strat tones of Gilmour or Pearl Jam than twangy stuff. I find the MIM in this video to sound pretty crappy (fuzzy and lacking spank) but I’ve heard demos where they sound amazing.
      I’m looking for a warmer yet thick sounding strat in the $600 range. Something that can achieve Gilmour style tones (ex: Animals, Dark Side of the Moon) and that great tone from Pearl Jam’s Yellow Ledbetter for example. I’m just not sure where to turn. I’m thinking a more current MIM standard since quality control has apparently improved in recent years, though I also want a tremolo that doesn’t go out of tune so easily. Even my 97 American Strat had issues with the trem going out of tune instantly. Maybe I could upgrade the trem.
      Would you recommend specific years of a Standard or other strat model to look for or avoid? Ceramic pickups or Fat 50’s? And when you say FSR Gilmour, did Fender make a specific MIM model tailored to the Gilmour style, or are you saying the FSR in general provides more of a Gilmour style tone?
      Sorry for so many questions. Since your shooting for the same thing I am I figured maybe you could point me in the right direction. Thanks for any input you can provide.

      @@graphicartdude Hi!! I'll be honest. I am happy with most omy guitars. I've found that since I perform only in my little camper studio, I am able to dial in tones that seem to be my own sound which is very gilmourish I suppose due to my playing style albeit not a pro....The strat I have is 2017 Dec built. Maybe one of the last Standards but under the Guitar Center or big box special runs FSR. They used to flood the market it now they do not sell them new anymore. It has the appointments like spaghetti logo , and the fender classic trem and not sure other than the neck maple also sprayed front and back with poly. Those are diff along with color scheme which was Black on black with 3 play black guard on black poly. Creme or parchment plastic knobs and pup covers giving it the gilmour appeal visually. The pups are the standard affair ceramic. I plan to put some alnicos in but mainly because I want to make this as close to DGs as possible albeit MIM I could care less with that as I know MIM and US are in spitting distance and use same tools and people and spec for the most part. Hahaha. To be honest man, Classic Vibe squier makes one now that looks same. They have alnicos. I know you and I like the warmer tones not country twang. Hahah. Anyway you might find one like mine used fair price! But check squier if that name doesn't bother you they have a 50s that looks the part and sounds magical for 399 usd!! Full size body. Beautiful necks! Same colors. I may release a David Gilmour string review today on my channel which will be a first for me playing the black strat or any guitar without all my effects. Hahahaha. You'll hear its tones but I didn't use my interface sadly.

      @@robertclarkguitar Wow thanks for sharing all of that! Muchly appreciated. I was actually looking into Squires. I’m not a brand snob. I picked up a used Squire Tele for $90 a couple years ago and am amazed how good of an instrument it is. Well made, great looking tobacco sunburst finish, decent tuners, lots of volume unplugged (which is usually a sign of a good guitar), plays well, and sounds good in my amps.
      I grew fond of the ceramic pickups after hearing a particular demo here on RUclips of a MIM Standard Strat played through a Kemper. It had that Gilmour tone.
      I’m still in the learning process of which pickups sound more to my liking. I was considering a 2020 Player Strat (found a used one listed for $420) though I just don’t like the sound of them or the steep string angles from nut to posts and string tree (which I assume would be a pain to achieve tuning stability with whammy bar use). I guess I could swap the pickups and have a nearly New more modern guitar for cheap. Or maybe I should just go the Squire or MIM route.
      I’ll do some more research into pickups and what Dave used. Thanks again for the quick and thorough reply. I’ll check out your channel for sure!

      @@graphicartdude Cool, I would buy that player in a heart beat! Hahah. The string tree id swap for a t or roller. Perhaps a nice tusq nut. Should have no problems with tuning if set up right! I have neither of my strats floated but I have a Harley benton floated that has the 2 point wilkenson trem and tusq nut locking tuners and I have zero issues. Probably the set up is right. Hahah anyway I hope you find what you like! I'm very much in same boat. Looking for my own sound and really happy so far with what I have. In the 80s that was hard with affordable guitars. @@Jeymez superb...it's slightly better than the player series...in terms of build and finish. Two point trem.. locking tuners and noiseless pickups. Some people complain about the pickup but I don't hear any difference. The fret board is delicious...you wouldn't get tired even after long hrs.

    I am really looking forward to this.I played the older one at a friends house.absolutely beautiful...and they wouldn't sell it to me because she paid over $2000 for it at a charity auction(every oz rock icon from the last 40 yrs signatures on it,but I didn't give a fuck.was about the sound for me).I offered 1000 which is the price for a mexi strat,she did not accept.Anyway,i played 3 mexican "player" series at my local music shop through my own mesa boogie amp like I did with my friends guitar and they just sounded like any guitar,not bad,but no strat beautiful wow factor...shithouse actually compared with my friends.One sounded the best,and the other 2 came in at 2nd and 3rd.

      You legit offered $1000 for a used Mexican Standard???? Dude, WHY? That's way too much!! They normally go for like $400-$500, give or take. I just picked up a used 2017 model in excellent condition for $350.

      Gary C Thanks for your query. We really love making these videos, but Felix had to take a break to try and spend more time with his dad who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. 2 years later, dad passed away followed 2 mths later by last surviving grandma... just as COVID hit. We plan to get back into it but it’s been a little tough. Thanks for watching and showing your support, the more support we get the more motivation we have to get back into it sooner rather than later :). Hope you’re staying safe in these crazy times.

    So confusing with hundreds of Strat models and years and no large guitar stores near me to demo. I much prefer strat tones of Gilmour or Pearl Jam than twangy stuff. I find the MIM in this video to sound pretty crappy (fuzzy and lacking spank) but I’ve heard demos where they sound amazing. I don’t like the sound of the Player Strat here either (at least for the tones I’m seeking).
Maybe I could upgrade the trem on whatever guitar I get.
    Knowing what sound I’m looking for could anyone recommend specific years of a Standard or other strat model to look for or avoid? Ceramic pickups or Fat 50’s? Again, I’m trying to stay within a budget, which I know reduces my buying options. Thanks for any input from anyone willing to assist.

      Difficult to point you in any direction by I got a second hand deluxe HSS American Strat which has noiseless pickups and a humbucker on the bridge . The neck and middle don’t have that bright spank that the Player has but much more controlled and the bridge is just dynamite -polar opposite of a single coil . If you see a second hand Strat with noiseless pickups give it a go , might work for you or try a G and L as the pickups on their budget models are American and they are so much better than the Player ones .

      You need to replace your pickups with EMG active single coils. That's the Gilmour sound your after it won't get you all the way their but it's a start.

      Strats aren't twangy there bluesy, Telecasters with single coils are twangy. when you put effects pedals and different things through an amp, your not gonna hear that.
      also i got news for you, Gilmour used an American Standard on all Pink Floyd albums not Mexican. Pearl Jam used a Gibson Les Paul in studio, one of the guitarist used a Strat live, but in Studio the albums were recorded with a Les Paul.
