I’ve been rowing for 5 years and ive just learned that feathering is an advanced technique, ok noted
Lol i had to learn That from 2 lesson and I’m now on it for like half a year and if i say my self do it without thinking so😂🤷♀️
How many days that you learned please?
His form on the erg is killing me
Josh Simpson I'm not the only one😂😂 I was actually having a full body cringe
yikes.. same
Same
Me too. And he was out of breathe like he did something uhhh 🙄
Same... I was worried he’d hurt himself.
My favorite part was when he called feathering an advanced technique
Brainjock ok calm down novice
Brainjock ok 3 seat
@Brainjock i bet ur 3 seat😂
@Brainjock bruh seriously... an advanced technique...
@@jfw0382 Salty BOWSIDE
He had fine technique until he decided to have a race and it all just went out the window.
literally he just started moving his arms, and legs there was no body angle, no swing, no jump, and no pressure at all. he was just going back and forth 😂😂😂 that was a terrible 100 meter race 😂
but at least he tried 😂
@@ainerainey9250
Wonder how you would be first time writing a national news story on a deadline?
Wall Street person: does 100m race taking like 25 seconds
also Wall Street Dude: "Now that I have mastered the erg"
Thats why, no wonder lol
I row and I love it and hate it but I couldnt stop if i tried
+Thrilla in manilla you've never rowed have you
Henry Thomas yep rowing is a love hat relationship but there is nothing else like it. Although there was tough times, I enjoyed rowing for all 4 years during highschool
Same I hate it but I miss it when I don't row for 1 week
Sounds like EMS. I see why I'm attracted to rowing now. It's the joys of mutual suffering
Did he take 3 strokes to do 10 meters?!
@@eabhaflanagan3123No he took 3 strokes they said he had 10 more meters
3 strokes to do 10 METERS are you kidding me it should be just one!
@@adadere5273 Not for someone who has never done it lol??
@@eabhaflanagan3123 3 strokes for 100 meters? nah man it doesn't work like that
Better take out the WinTech for the novice
lmao that guy is not 150 he looks 135
As a skinny guy I get called out at125 a lot, I'm easy 128!
i think it's just perspective to the other guys
#lightweightrowing
Olympic sweepers teaching sculling, great job
@big wang I learned to sweep before I learned to scull
i’m in california and we learn to sweep before sculling
Tennessee here and I learned to sweep first
Emma Reynolds in the uk we learn to scull and then sweep because we start off in a tub single.
Oh and they also have people scull first because if you start at a young age, it isn’t good to have one arm (or side) stronger than than the other since you are still growing.
@@mikaamberthekittens6368 unless u start rowing later
When you're the coxswain and your form is better
Tony Lee lmao true
But he literally learned how to row that day
Seriously??!! He has never rowed before and he started i a wintech with concept oars??!! WTF?!!
I had to go in 10 year old Filipi's for 2-3 years before i even was allowed near a wintech!!!!
Cian Mac I don't know what is wrong with you guys but Fillipi is like a Ferrari and Wintech like is like a 20 years old chines bike. Have you ever watched World Championships? they only row Fillipi Empacher and Hudson and not that soft asian crap
rudern in Grünau Yeah but when i started i had to row in a crap eurochamp that was like 10years old, a wintech is way better than that, maybe not as good as an empacher or fillipi, but still a great boat...
Sorry not a filipi a different boat i derped.....
rudern in Grünau when i started i had to row on an almost 20 years old empacher
Rowing isn't fun, it's a way of life. I don't row because of the fun, I row for the pain, and the feeling you get when you pass the boat next to you.
What a strange way of learning how to row. I'm a coach and rower myself and I usually teach people to stay balanced on the water at first.
The question is "How hard can it be?"
Well it's not really a "training" session at all is it?, it's more of a light entertainment and good TV.
Serious training would start off in a tub until you get the hang of balance- oars feathered correctly and at strike, also synchronising properly with the other crew.
after that you'll move on to either quad/double tracer sculls or fours/eights(with cox), depending on your aptitude.
if you get really good then you move up to the racing boats, big guys with the power at stroke end, smaller guys with the technique(or steering ability if coxless) at bow end.
as for single sculls, you need to master all three at once-power,steering accuracy and balance.they aren't the easiest to row especially on a tidal course.
Rowing is my life. its a struggle some days but it worth all the pain and blisters. Thats how i felt the first on water. but Im PROUD to be a ROWER :)
Being a varsity rower this was interesting to watch
He has no idea how to row and they're making him scull???
Thought the same.....the first time i row was in a boat as fat as a sailing boat
I learned to row in a double scull too. Then again my crew is very sculling oriented.
+Evelyn M. Hmmm interesting
Evelyn M. sculling master race
well they cant exactly put him in a pair can they? Thats even worse
Awkward that's they didn't teach him to scull left over right
I was thinking that lol
I mean the guy is a bad learner for a journalist, didn't ask any questions. I had my first go rowing the other week and was put in a quad and made sure to ask the experienced guy behind me how my hands should be oriented and all that stuff, they didn't tell me anything till I asked.
He is doing waaaaay better than i was on my first day
When you know where this place is because that's the boathouse you erg in.. Feel extra cool
I would say he had it hard. Most people learn t row in tub boats which are much wider and more stable. It took me almost nine months before i could comfortably row in fine boats, and more than a year to get the hang of single sculls. (which I now race)
In west coast United States that hasn't been the case for the most recent generations of rowers. Now it's no tubs, no barges. I believe most learn to row/novices are started in an 8 that was likely used at some point as the varsity A or B boat in a major race, when it was fresh and new. The coaches call it trickle down rowing when the best of the team use the new equipment while the older it gets, it eventually makes its way down to those who seldom have rowed before.
It would probably be better to start out on the fine boats because it forces you to learn rather than rely on handicaps and so on
it took me like one mhonts to get in the 4 boat and five in single scull
I actually started out rowing in a single scull, and then transitioned to other boats. I think I did have pontoons on for a little.
You guys started on tub boats? My coach just threw us into the racing shells and we only flipped once on like the third day, haven’t flipped since
"I think 2016 is too close. If you work really hard perhaps 2020..."
Video is from 2012... LOL
A person who is new to the sport should try an 8 or 4 boat. Rowing in a 2 boat seems kind of dumb.
Veronica Elsie We learned in doubles
A lot depends on the "coaches " and on the learners . One day 2 of us took a couple kayak paddlers out in a regular 4 man boat . After 15-20 minutes they weren't half bad . Mind you , we were good at coaching and they were good athletes . Later they reciprocated and took us 2 rowers out in their 4 man flat water racing kayak .
If you think about it, his bowman is an Olympian and double his size. I think he's fine
4s are rocky, could make a new rower who can’t swim a little nervous
I beg to differ Javier, I've coached a number of newbies with us sitting a double, me at bow. That way you have one-to-one focus, it's easier to maintain control of the boat and their cause and effect actions are not diluted by the others in a boat with 4 or 8. But hey, each has their own...
"I had to keep the oars perpendicular"😂😂😂
He raises his oar wayyyyyy to high😂😂
Still waiting in 2020 for him to be in the Olympics.
I row every single day and I'm 14. This was really funny to watch
Do you still row?
Update ud
Rowing is extremely tough... I've passed out several times during training..
Zach Damon Cisco ive never passed out but usually i just get sick
Stay hydrated! Vomiting can be a sign of dehydration, along with passing out.
Don't rowing is an evil sport full of blisters and 5am starts... apart from that go for it
Don't discourage anyone. Waking up early is actually a good habit. As for blisters, I thought it was weird no one has come up with sport gloves for this!
Nunya Bizness There's rowing gloves out there, from multiple brands even! ._.
@@pdrucker881 your not meant to wear gloves
My school roped us in by training after school for the first two years. Then, once you couldn’t leave, they switched to mornings.
@@jackvickers1608 well, you can, but everyone would mock you, so it’s not recommended. That’s literally the only reason
Truer words have never been spoken well said fellow rower
I don't think that giving big blades to a total newbie is that clever
PROUD to row
As a member of the US rowing team in prior years and
rowed in graduate school, I got this question alot. After putting them in the boat they usually, flipped the boat, caught many "crabs" and were exhausted in no time whatsoever! LOL
Is it just me or do you guys' coaches call the 'oar locks' gates instead and 'oars' blades?
+Jess Noyes Our coaches call the "oar locks" locks and "oars" blades
Not the gates part but oars are the entire, well, oar, the blade is the just the part on the end that goes in the water
Shane Elliot sane here
We call them oar locks, but for the oars we call them both oars and blades. Your oar is the whole thing, but your blade is the thick part that moves you through the water
yeahhh call them gates and blades
My boathouse!! Go RNY!
They should've changed the position of the foot plate.. Its waaay to close
"Because he doesn't row."
"He doesn't row?"
"No, he doesn't row!"
"Ah. I see what you mean."
love all the rowers out here ragging on this poor man, probably never rowed in his life and hes learning, yall gotta stop tryharding on the internet and and do it on the erg lol
Rowing is harder than meets the eye but they were stupid to put a novice (not even) in a two man scull
Good idea out in double bow man can balance the boat so the new guy in the stroke seat can can learn the basics
Rowing is hard as shit. Things that were hard in the beginning get easy when you are more experienced but then there's even harder things...
I think they should have had him in a sweep boat personally. One oar is easier to focus on instead of 2 and if they chose to do a 4 seat he could stroke, the twins could be 2 and 3 seat, and maybe they could have an empty 4 seat, and have a coxswain, you know, cox.
he cracks himself up
Retired from light weight rowing for almost two years now, body weight went from 158lb to 198lb now. This Video made me decide to go back for 2018 season.
How is the rowing journey going?
I would love to learn to do this.
I stg... this makes such a meal out of rowing.
Everything about this reporter saying and doing is physicaly hurting me
“2016 is close, but maybe 2020?”
2020:
Caught a crab on the erg. Wow just wow ♥️
I’m sorry for all the rowers who had to watch this
Looks like the twins lost hope quickly hahaha I mean the main issue is the way he is bending his arms and they just stop trying to correct that.
True story. 1020 watts put out. I just did it as part of the youth talent identification testing for the Australian Institute of Sport. Last month I pulled a 14.1. And the record is actually 10.18, you're close though.
Enjoyed watching. Thanks guys. TT
I like these videos a lot, but did anyone else think Stu was high during the shoot?
Yesterday I was just rowing in a one person boat and I forgot to tighten my oar locks so my oar came out of the thing and I tipped over lol
I was stroking in a double, and when we got back to the pontoon, bow decided it was a great idea to lean out and undo the outside oar without anyone holding the boat. Long story short, we capsized, and it was freezing, and I had to walk home. Although I did drop the boat while carrying it up, so we might have just been having a bad day.
dude its 2020 I wanna see hi race in these games
I do it and hate it
:( please help me
it’s hard
"let's put the supernov 4 washers under...muwahaha..muwahahahhahahaa...MUWAHAHAHAHA" - winklevi
Bow seat has to make sure that the boat doesn't crash. And turning is a bit different/harder in the bow.
in a coxless pair/coxless four that's right. bow man has control of the rudder.
Also those chicken wing arms... lol still better than me on my first row
Love the vid, guys!
Starting
With sculling is tough.
forgot to tighten my oar lock all the way at a regatta and flipped in the last meter after losing an oar
that almost happened to me the other day in a chicago reggata.
I've never seen a real row boat, let alone this fancy one that is the subject of much envy from you seasoned rowers. I just row next to the fat guy at the gym, who is just dying to tell me that I'm doing it wrong. Thank you for this video. I can't wait to try a more correct form at the gym.
Oh no don't do this at the gym go to a different vid not here
trust me, real lfe rowing is much, much nicer than the gym equipment.Yes it's hard and takes training to do well, but it's also relaxing if you don't want competitive level. It's a fantastic way to de-stress
100 meter race 😂 that shouldn’t even take a minute at full pressure. Put him on for a 6k and he’ll pass out
Ikr IM 12 and I do I 100m in 19seconds
Yh he should be doing at least 250m in 1 minute
jfw 03 exactly
100 meter isn't even 30 seconds in a racing boat.
shortest sprints we did were 500m. typical race is 2k so 7-8 minutes.
head of river races are fun but brutal. like you said 6-8k depending on current and that's 20-25 minutes solid flat out. current against you totally wipes you out!!!!
'so I graduated to a more advanced technique... Feathering' so advanced... You don't learn that on your first day rowing at all...
I mean I didn't
as a former boat this was interesting to watch
you are not a boat anymore?
swapped genders@@snekkel
they should’ve started him with sweeping.
I love rowing but its hard
when he said "I can't swim" 💀
his shirt actually says "sports" real cool
It's possible, maybe even desirable. I don't think it's what most people want to do though. Inspiring and timely
maybe 2020
This lad tho 😂
why does he look like he's constantly falling asleep hahaha
1:52 "My form wasn't too bad" Mega Cringe
They are in a WinTech double scull. The twins company produce the shell.
short answer - It's very hard. (I rowed - only got to 2nd JV boat in the early 80's at UW... but it's VERY HARD)
Wow bellissimo il Canottaggio forza ragazzi🚣♂️🚣♂️🚣♂️🚣♂️✌💪💪💪💪
When you fall off an erg the water’s gonna get interesting very fast, even if your do improve quickly.
That erg technique tho lmao
4:52 2020 olympics lolollolol
The things attached to the riggers that hold the oar in place.
I've always wanted to take it up casually...but I live in New Mexico =/
i dont live in the usa- but theres no rivers there?
Well it didn’t really work out for 2020 either eh
They should have mirrors on the boats so you can see where your going
Twins repping row New York :')
Lol, not even 2020 is now optional
They lock the oar to the boat. It's the knob thing that he tightened.
They are called BLADES and it is not oar locks or blade locks they are the GATES on the end of the rigger
Read the comments. In different countries, they are called different things. Most people agree, the blades are only the part of the oar that go into the water.
gates also called "rollocks"
In your defense... sweep rowing is easier than sculling to learn....
Whoops, when I checked it, I realised that it was for a 100m track event... Scratch that. Well I went 14.0 and was the fourth best in the country, so I think someone else must have been able to do something better than that! My splits were peaking at 1:05 in the last couple strokes, and I don't reckon it would take much more to get beneath 14.0.
Probably because it'd be more difficult to teach somebody who's sitting behind you.
wow i did not know feathering was an advanced technique
My dream is to row with the concept 2 skinnies. Best oars I’ve rowed so far is only the crokers.
At my club we use those oars but the novices always scratch them and drop them
Oh yeah concept skinnies are great to row with. A bit slippery tho
"Maybe 2020" didn't age well...
After getting new hips I was told to not row.....fat chance....or jog or bicycle!!!I could WALK!!!!That is all!
I love when he falls off the erg!
So does rowing.
ok he makes rowing really hard...
i wanna know what winklevoss went on the 100m piece
If he can beat 14 flat, he can beat me. Which he probably can.
