Dematerialisation - A Doctor Who VFX Shot

  • Since the TARDIS' dematerialisation effect has remained largely unchanged for the past fifty years, I thought it might be interesting to try out a new approach. So this is my attempt at capturing what travelling through time and space might look like from the point of view of the TARDIS - from take-off to landing, all in one shot.
    You can like me on Facebook at / johnsmithvfx
    Maya, After Effects, Element 3D (v2), and Premiere were the programs used.
    Enjoy!

    From the point of view of the TARDIS, this is interesting. The way in which it dematerialises and then appears to spin in the Vortex when it's fully dematerialised implies that it's not actually moving, but that space and time are moving around it. So if it doesn't make your head hurt too much, try to visualise the Vortex itself as the thing that is moving, while the TARDIS remains in a fixed position and orientation. It's not accelerating towards different points in space-time - those spots are accelerating towards the TARDIS.

      Isn't that like saying when I see my friend spin circles I know the world is still (relatively) stationary. But when I try to spin circles, the world spins and I stand still. Perspective does not correlate to reality. It's simply a "multiverse" of the original source.
      Basically: Just because you're looking at from a different lens doesn't mean the situation has changed. TRUE it shows a counter option to your previous assumption on reality based on your previous perspective. But which one is actually spinning? They both could be. Time to look at it from even another perspective, one only obtainable in... dun, dun dun! The 4th Dimension.

    I can't stop watching this video. It is a perfect visualization of how I imagined a flight of the TARDIS would look like. From our perspective, the TARDIS fades or "blinks" out, and fades back in. From the view point of the TARDIS, space and time are conglomerating around the TARDIS until it finally enters the Space-Time vortex, which consist of all points in space and all points in time.
    The TARDIS doesn't actually "move" but rather, the TARDIS manipulates space-time around it until it enters the vortex. Then the Vortex moves around the TARDIS to its intended destination (a point in space, and a point in time). The Materialization portion is space-time around the TARDIS settling back into a normal state.
    This also explains why the Doctor's TARDIS tends to materialize at the incorrect destination, or the incorrect time. The Doctor's TARDIS was obsolete when he stole it. The Chameleon circuit shortly went out when he first began his travels, and it is implied that the navigational system (which would essentially pilot the TARDIS through the complexities of the Vortex) is possibly faulty. (Name of the Doctor, The Doctor's Wife)

    This is really innovative little shot. We've always seen the TARDIS dematerialising from the POV of other characters, where it just sort've winks out of existence. It's really nice to see the camera show the TARDIS dematerialising from its POV. That's actually something I'm surprised hasn't been incorporated into the show.

      James Haney If you're not familiar with the DW Weekly/Monthly/Magazine comic strips that have been running for the past 36 years, then "Vworrp!" has been the adopted comic strip 'noise flash' wording for the TARDIS landing/taking-off. It's almost as synonymous as Terrence Dicks' description as 'a wheezing, groaning sound' from the Target novels.

    "Oh, even if I tried to explain it to you, it wouldn't make sense."
    She looked at him.
    He sighed.
    "If you insist," he said.
    He thought for a moment.
    "We are in a vehicle who's engine bends the laws of physics and reality itself, twisting and contorting the universe like play-doh, completely sidestepping the light-speed barrier, travelling between dimensions, all as though it doesn't have any effect. The energies that power this device are beyond anything that exists in any universe anywhere; this TARDIS is in and of itself a universe in seclusion, a closed-off pocket of reality. My little slice of life, if I dare say."
    "Well that doesn't make much sense."
    He chuckled.
    "I told you."

After they've changed the tone of the show so much in series 8, new sequences like this one would fit in perfectly. Given how the idea behind the new title sequence originally came from another VFX video online, I feel like the BBC may actually take this into consideration. So whether they do or they don't, thank you John Smith! You're amazing!

      The thing that kind of brothers me is that when traveling through time, the machine doesn’t fly. It appears at a destination at the coordinates you input, or you will arrive at a random place and you don’t just arrive at a random place either. Sense the Earth is constantly revolving and rotating, the coordinates to arrive at a location takes a bunch of math and calculations so you don’t just end up in a ocean or something.

    This is actually quite interesting. This video assumes that the TARDIS always stays in the same "place" and orientation, and everything moves around it. Which explains why in the series, when the TARDIS has to actually fly, it's always bumpy/shaky (at least more than usually), and in season 3 it even started smoking. The Doctor even commented that it doesn't actually fly much. Nice.

    Stunning. I often wondered why as a viewer we didn't go 'with the tardis' when it dematerialised rather than simply watching it go and then land. This is superb.

    I love how as the Tardis comes back into reality it gets an X-ray view of the forest as it starts seeing the tree roots slightly before it starts seeing the ground covering them, its a very cool effect and I love it!

  • @veggiet2009
    @veggiet2009 8 лет назад +3

    Seriously, this should be in series 10. Though it's not a simple effect the could be use in every tardis move, and if you repeated it might seem old very quickly.
    I could see this sort of thing used if ever the Doctor were in another Time Chase, like he was at the beginning of the Empty Child, and the beginning of Human Nature.

    Is this meant to be what it looks like from the TARDIS point of view, and what we see on the show it just the point of few of the person in that one location when it disappears?

  • @adamwalkervfx
    @adamwalkervfx 9 лет назад +1

    Impressive amount of detail in rendering the model, particularly with the beginning during night time. I don't thinking we ever had this kind of perspective of dematerialisation since An Unearthly Child with the view London slowing disappearing in darkness as the TARDIS takes off.
    Nice job on delivering something unique and thought provoking.

    That was incredible :D although I think you got the sound effect wrong (that was the materialization sound not dematerialization)

    • @darrenbradleytwin
      @darrenbradleytwin 9 лет назад +5

      It was indeed incredible and I also agree to a point, a mixture of both the dematerialization and materialization sounds would be more appropriate, the former fading out to the latter fading-in.

    • @ShaunKL
      @ShaunKL 9 лет назад +14

      I think it makes sense. You're hearing the sound from the perspective of the TARDIS dematerializing into the vortex, so, in effect, the TARDIS is "landing" in the vortex.

    • @VOIDSTUFF
      @VOIDSTUFF 9 лет назад +3

      Mm Yep it's definitely the wrong sound but I think that the landing sound was used instead so that there was a build up in the sound up to the point where the TARDIS enters the vortex. So I think it was more of an artistic choice.

    Absolutely amazing as always except I have one question, what would it look like to people viewing it outside the TARDIS and not actually going with it when it disappears?

    • @MsASMARVEL
      @MsASMARVEL 9 лет назад +24

      Perhaps the classic "blinking" effect as the TARDIS fades out? In those dematerialization scenes, we're always left seeing the empty space where it departed so maybe the human eye can't process the event entirely. This take on it could be if we follow the TARDIS' path and not the usual bystander's as it phases into the Time Vortex.

    • @c7g4n8
      @c7g4n8 9 лет назад

      Maybe if one looked at the perspective from another TARDIS or time-travel capsule, it could look rather like the disappearing / appearing effect from the 1996 movie. I always liked that one.

    • @walterposs1212
      @walterposs1212 9 лет назад

      It would most likely look like the normal dematerialization we see in the show.

    The BBC should just hire you to make the title sequence. Every single one of these VFX videos are infinitely better in quality in both the rendering of the Tardis and the environment around then the current title sequence. Infinitely! It's maddening!

    "John Smith" is one of the most brilliant up-and-coming masters of film, and no one can tell me otherwise. You don't have to be a fan of Doctor Who to appreciate his attention to all details in his work, from the motivated camera movements to the impeccable sound design. Sure, image overlay stuff like the Wholock video isn't his strong suit, but who needs to be perfect at everything when you have creativity like this?
