Best band of all time. Wish this was released officially.
Biff Malibu Eddie Kramer recorded this one for an official release but page didn’t care for the show for some reason and opted for the MSG shows
@@derekjackson1039 Apparently he thought this show wasn't adequate enough. Given the TSRTS is a conglomerate of 3 separate shows, he [very likely] wanted it to sound perfect to his ears.
Hola...Tengo un Bootleg, d Swinging Pig...se llama.' SOUTHAMPTON 1973'. Muy buen sonido....Este es la primera parte, me consta que hay uno, o dos mas Bootleg..con el resto del Show.
@@derekjackson1039 no, this concert was the initial choice for the 2003 release (later how the west was won)
Good to know that there are still live multitrack recordings in the vault. Hopefully the Japan tour multitracks are still around!
Was at this show as said band on the edge of world domination
Been llistening to Zep since I was 14. Been a long time, and still my fav. God Bless them!
One of there best shows ever......how many more times is SICK!!!!!!!
At 48:16 jimmy is playing the Tarantella Napoletana.
AHAHHAHAHAHAHA
good ear... che la luna.
This was the last time they played at universities/local shows (anything under 1,500 capacity). Later in the year they toured the USA and it was arenas from there on end. A very interesting portrait of a band on the tether of world domination.
They always sounded tight in these smaller venues, shame they couldn't have done more later (Denmark 1979 the exception) IMHO,the huge open air arenas ( espcially in the '70s) weren't the best suited places for their stylistic and volume variations. And that less intimate distance from the audience those huge spectaculars create ,,
Page the master at creating different versions that sound better than the previous, always deepening the riffs
Found this little review with some interesting details, not sure of the Authors name:

Any Port In A Storm is among the releases with the Southampton tape that surfaced in 2007. Upon its release it has quickly ascended into the “must have” list of Led Zeppelin shows because of the professional recording and the set list that includes the only 1973 version of “How Many More Times” and the pristine recording of John Paul Jones’ mellotron symphony before “Thank You.” Like the others this has really nice sound and the label did not try to improve it with excessive remastering. They did however elimte the drum tuning in the introduction before “Rock And Roll” and cut out some tape around the glitches found throught the show.
“Rock And Roll” sounds a bit sluggish, but the following song “Over The Hills And Far Away” is very good with an animated solo by Page in the middle. Before “Black Dog” Plant says, “And it’s a good evening. I believe we came here before. I don’t know if it was as warm then. We’re going to have a good time tonight. This is about a Labrador who became rather - rather dodgy with lumbago. The only thing he could do was boogie. He was a black dog. Black Dog!” The “Misty Mountain Hop” and “Since I’ve Been Loving You” pairing follows immediately afterwards. Before “Dancing Days” Plant explains, “This is a bastard actually. This is a track from the new album. It’s a track that was written in the height of last year’s summer on July 6th. It’s a song about school days and little boys that never grow up. It’s called ‘Dancing Days’.” This is usually a great live piece but this version sounds tired with Page playing a bland solo at the song’s conclusion.
“Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp,” which normally follows “Dancing Days,” is dropped: “we don’t know it to be honest,” Plant explains. “Besides we can’t maneuver about.” The band play another new song, “The Song Remains The Same” instead. The right channel of the stereo flickers at eleven seconds into the track and becomes a bit weak at twenty-two seconds, but improves soon afterwards with another flicker at 2:51. at the end of “The Rain Song” Plant says, “That was John Paul Jones, ably assisted by the Haleigh Orchestra which we managed to press into this small 3 X 26 box.” A power surge can be heard on the tape and there is a short delay while the roadies work on wiring onstage. Page plays a bit of the Tarantella while Plant caution “you can get a shock you know, Cerano.” Plant jokes with the audience about the show the previous evening at the Gaumont Theater before the band play a twenty-eight minute version of “Dazed And Confused.”
The recording preserves the dynamics of the piece and the song is very enjoyable in this show. Plant is out of tempo during the “San Francisco” section and Page takes his time finding his violin bow. Bonham plays the cymbals under Plant’s moans in the interim before the violin bow section begins. The sounds are soft, reminiscent of the Liverpool tape, but also very creepy. “Whole Lotta Love” lasts for a half hour and the medley is typical for this tour with no surprises. There is a small cut on the tape at 19:47. They play the longest set of encores of the tour. “Heartbreaker” is first followed by the John Paul Jones mellotron arrangement of “Thank You,” This is an experiment he first introduced in Nagoya the previous October and played it several times since, but this is the best recording we have of this unusual piece.
At the song’s end Page plays some pretty figures on the guitar before Plant introduces the next number. “This is one of our early tunes and God knows if we can remember it.” They play an eight minute version of “How Many More Times” for the first time in two year and this segues directly with the final encore of the night “Communication Breakdown.” Any Port In A Storm is packaged in a tri-fold gatefold sleeve and is a nice edition to have.
Damn ! Awesome
I think I will take all those old concerts and remaster them all, and re upload all of them, this is gold!
Jimmy on point that night
Actually (and sadly because it was recorded) it was one of Jimmy's worst nights of the entire 72-73 tour. So if you thought he was on point, you need to check out a LOT more shows from this era.
Jimmy always on point even with 3 finger technique
you def need to listen to a LOT more shows...
Actually.... check out his solos in Thank You during the 71 concert tour and you'll see the difference. Some of the best he ever played live without doubt.

Sounds spectacular. This needs to be released officially.
Dick Dragon was going to be, around 2003 this was considered for release, believe this is the Kevin Shirley mix.
Jimmy opted for the Long Beach / La Forum amalgamation of shows-also mixed by Shirley. This was shelved. Can see why.
Led zeppelin in pure simplicity just beforethe Madison Square Garden in NY !!!!! What a wonderful group !
This is pure GOLD
Kids will hear this 😊
Love this version of Dancing Days, Page plays it with all the nuance of album version, while using standard tuning. Far superior to version on How The West Was Won. I’ll never understand why they ever dropped it from set list.
Cause you weren't in the band, that's why...so let it go....
Cause you touch yourself at night
A more blues-y approach here. Enjoyed it immensely ....
this is one of the best SIBLY versions out there
Such a good sound to it
thank you❤❤❤very good voice and sounds❤I love so much 😂🎉
Fucking A! John's drums are just ... Cannons! To think that in '71 in America they were selling out multiple nights in a row in the Forum and Madison Square Garden - and here to years later and in hopes of lessening the accusations of being all hype (Superhype, haha) in their home country - they booked this back to basics tour of the UK. I love it.
Bonzo was epic !
JP Jones barely missed a note ...
“ Thank you “ was great !

Killer show great sound quality too
absolutly incredible..much thank's for posting this awesome document of sound ..it's all here..the essence of Led Zeppelin
Having Over the Hills follow RocknRoll throws me. But I like that, as I have been enjoying Zep since 1978 and it's nice to get thrown once in awile as we have become so accustomed to hearing Zep in the same way for so long. The usual 73 transition to Celebration day is so expected this jars me. Also the ad lib "pocketful of gold" rather than the now infamous "Acapulco Gold" is fun to hear. Sure Robert is a bit scratchy here but this is real raw and I'm happy to have it. thanks Gray Flannel for sharing
It sounds like an edit. Possibly removing Celebration Day for record timing purposes.

Incredible sound quality! I had this show on cassette years ago and it was lousy sounding. Hissy, distant and muffled sometimes, but I could still tell the show was great, so I appreciate this version. Thanks for sharing!
This show only surfaced in the last 10 years and to date is the only source of this night available to the public. It has only been available in this stellar quality - never muffled or lousy sounding. I still can't believe it leaked because it's one of the precious few shows that Zeppelin recorded for a live album. It was never available in the cassette/vinyl era (I've been a Zep live collector since the mid-80's). The night before at the Gaumont in Southampton was available as an audience tape, maybe that's the one you had.
Kevin Shirley did mention this show was a candidate to be released back in 2003 and praised The Rain Song on it. But here we are in 2017 and no signs of it coming out. Personally I think it's an average show at best for Zeppelin in early 1973 (when you compare it to other nights). Jimmy doesn't have the sustain on his guitar he normally did (possibly due to turning down in a small venue) and his playing is a little sloppier than usual for the era. Robert took a bit of time to warmup and was dealing with the decline of his voice, not helped by him having the flu at the beginning of the year. But his decline had started in Japan 1972 with his voice breaking constantly and he had to adjust. Even in a show a week before this one in Stoke, Robert was adjusting in a smart way. For Rock and Roll he sang the lead vocal in harmony with the key which was really effective. For whatever reason he didn't do it on this version. Jimmy breaks an E string at the 53:25 mark (during Dazed). If you think Thank You sounds different it's because Jones was using the mellotron for the entire song (and intro) rather than the organ. He did this in 1972-73 for the handful of encores it was played, but (thankfully) went back to the organ for the few versions in the US 1973 including the one we all want to see - the final song in New York that was filmed for The Song Remains The Same (there is a decent soundboard recording of it). How Many More Times hadn't been played (to anyone's knowledge) since Japan 1971 when they attempted it on this night and curiously it's one of the most unusual versions ever. Robert does the "I was a young man I couldn't resist" section which they normally never did. And because they forget where they were, you get The Hunter section twice. I'm surprised the more common encore of The Ocean wasn't played.
its so funny, u can literally hear confusion in how jimmy starts this part
Holy shit bro, that's some killer info, thanks! It sounds like you might be in a position to upload some other shows, hint hint!
Long time fan, reader and listener. Would he have been able to, that's a great question. I don't think so. He may have been better off overall, but I remember hearing that he may have had some sort of surgery on his vocal cords in late 1973. No one has really asked him directly - What the hell happened? He did get sick a lot on tour. He got sick in early 1969. On the Danish TV footage he was sick, though I thought he sounded pretty decent anyway. Compare that version of Communication Breakdown to the one from Paris October 1969 where he was absolutely at the peak of his vocal range. Even the Royal Albert Hall 1970 show was not him at his best. He got sick during the clubs tour of March 1971. He got nodes on his vocal cords in August 1971 (in Texas). He got sick in January 1973. He got sick in January 1975, etc. He just pushed things too far and that's all she wrote. If things like the Bath Festival 1970 or Japan 1971 come out in the next few years, you'll get to hear some more Plant in his prime.
Haha, it wouldn't be on RUclips. Those shows cost a lot of money. But the good news is a lot of great stuff is coming out.

Gotta release before its to late!!
Unusually clean....but no surprise
All this needs for a CD release is the audience mixing up for atmosphere.
I really like this one
Page did recently say that another live multitrack is coming in Ocotber of this year. Unless Pagey has others in his vault, this is the leading candidate for the release in which he is referring to. It was supposed to be released but HTWWW was the winner. This is next in my opinion.
g4340 honestly I hope not and I doubt it/know it won’t be. He said it would be a different representation of zeppelin compared to TSRTS and HTWWW. Personally I hope it’s an early 69-71 show or the first night of LA in 1977. But who knows
@@stephenpeterson6676 I like your suggestions for sure. Fans of Zepp and music fans alike should hear so many of their bootlegs --warts and all. Whatever Pageh decides I will be happy with because he did say a live show will be released each years for about the next 10 years. It's going to be a very nice ride that I surely will enjoy.
Pagey has whole Tours in his Vault... where's '72, '74 the majority of '75, along with '69, '70 and '71... come on! Let's get the gigs rollin' out JP!
Two months b4 the Houses of the Holy album was released. No wonder there's no reaction to Dancing Days, and Song Remains The Same
Just to say , Plant was not at his best , but we always want Zeppelin at the top ... sometimes they are not but they remain the best rock and roll group forever !
Ok, so Robert Plant was having a little trouble with his voice, but still, that man could sing better than anyone in rock and roll at that point (or ever, imo). Listen to his phrasing on Dazed and Confused @ 51:04 and how Jimmy answers him with the guitar...sooo cool. And in the Boogie Chillen section of Whole Lotta Love @ 1:35:29, Robert just rips it up and the interplay between him and Jimmy is just fantastic. This is what Zeppelin did better than anyone else. And I may be imagining it but John Paul Jones sounded like he was playing the intro to the Jackson Five's I'll Be There, here @ 2:10:08 - 2:10:18, Zep has been known to slip in unexpected bits of other folks songs into their shows.
Surprising *to me* that they were playing such tiny venues, at this stage of their careers. Soon they would be playing giant stadiums on the 73 US Tour.
They did these small gigs to " Warm Up " for the coming North American tour, it was a common thing for LZ, ✌
@@askledhead Not always. As one example, no tiny UK or other tiny gigs preceded their monster 1977 North American Tour....and there are other examples.
This was part of a 28 date 1972/1973 United Kingdom Tour, not an odd "warm-up gig". They then did a 21 gig European Tour, BEFORE that monster 1973 North American Tour.
Listen to how JP plays, so Articulate and Persistent. Before his hand injury in 73 ?
Awesome...the Zep...aint crashed
Nice little nod to Simon & Garfunkel 2:00:27
Plant had surgery on his vocal chords late 1972 and was never really the same as before. There's still some good performances by him after 1972 but also allot of bad ones. I guess if you want to be super critical and are looking to bash Zep you will, but if you are a true Zep fan you'll defend his singing. (like I did) Page also after 73" was on heroin and struggled. But there's concerts where Page kills it and is on fire. I guess you can say they weren't perfect, but early on they were great live.
who did they cover for whole lotta love? that was amazing!
what do u mean?

Jean Claude Lissot absolutely not, it’s a great, unique point of the band, but absolutely not the best concerts

No Celebration Day? How odd for 73.
How does this sound so clear? Is this a cover
This is a multitrack recording
Robert had the flu performing this show
No he didn't. He had the flu three weeks earlier. He was not 100%, but he usually had trouble at the start of shows in 1973-75. Never warmed up properly and always was smoking. His voice was constantly breaking during this tour as he was adjusting to his vocal issues that started in 1972 (and really jumped out in Japan 1972). He would require surgery after the 1973 tour. He started to get nodes on his vocal cords in the US August 1971. This is a recording from the multitracks which sounds great, but without any enhancements so it's dry sounding. The amazing thing is they are playing to only 400 people here in a private show for the university students and staff.
Robert has the flu since 1972
Some say he's still got it. Had it thru most of the seventies!
FLU:? Again???
Read: Loss of voice from far too many shows. Year after year.
Still, great to hear this from 73 well before the mega US tour that summer.

Feels/sounds like a small venue judging (2 song opening) by Bonzo's drums - no real BOOM or depth. Not hearing JPJ's bass as prominent as it usually was. I'm listening for the 1st time in a while so my opinion may change as I listen further.
The Old Refrectory held about 600, I was 10 feet from the stage.
@@philipm06 600 ? damn, Zeppelin in a closet. How loud was it, I've been to 2 Zep shows and had ringing in my ears for days, and I wasn't even close to the stage.

Perry Sar I used to do just that. The concert scene used to be so great. But then again those bands back then were all interesting. Lotta great memories ✌🏽
There are at least 2 other shows floating on U - Tube , Empire Ballroom Jan. 15 1973 , a week before this show, and his voice is pretty bad . Trenton, also Jan. 1973 . These were warm ups for the U.S. tour , which is when The Song Remains The Same was recorded. 6 months after these gigs .
It's amazing how history gets twisted over the years. These were not warmup gigs. This was their biggest UK tour ever from late November 1972 to late January 1973. Then they toured Europe for a month and then a two leg North American tour (don't forget Canada).
No, the SRTS was recorded over 6 months after this gig - early July 1973.. you're right though, these gigs around the 'boroughs' of England were warmup gigs for the upcoming USA Tour. The band knew that's where the balance of power hung, in the good ole US of A!
@@Ram44 I referred to them as " WARM UPS " because thats how I found them. Regardless how you want to think of them, these gigs were before the North American tour in 73, in interviews with the band they referred to them as " WARM UPS ", to play and practice the new LP add how to play them live to an audience, ✌ my fellow Led Heads
wow, great quality, but a very weak performance from robert
Wallyson Antonio We all know know Robert didn't respect his gift as he could have , along with the touring , in different climates around the world (and women) and subpar equipment unfortunately took it's toll on the led man .As it did other band mates , Robert was blessed with being the front man .Unfortunately being the front man it is determined how the rest of the band feels as well ,"Roberts Great " and always got the show rolling .
Not too bad for Robert during this time. His voice rapidly declined after 1971. He had to sort of go with a new, raspier style from 73 onward, as you can tell if you listen to shows from different years. I think it was a combination of factors that contributed to the deterioration of his singing voice. For one, he never took singing lessons, so he may have been using his vocal chords and muscles the wrong way, causing injury. To make matters worse, they had a very active touring schedule and I think if they spaced out the shows more and allowed his voice sufficient time to heal, he may have lasted longer. Plus the smoking, drinking, drugging and partying all night didn't help. It's more than just the flu, because even when his voice recovered from the flu it still wasn't anything like we hear on Zeppelin 1 - 4.
Christopher Lees I think Zeppelin was so surprised by their success that they wanted to play and make as much money as they could. Not knowing how long the ride would last . But your right on
Drugs played a small role, but he a number of injuries to both his hands and tendonitis. He also wasn't as hungry to reach the top because once at the top in 1975, complacency crept in. Along with a lot of posing onstage rather than bearing down and playing great.
That was heading to Sheffield on January 2nd when he got sick. This was January 22nd.
Plant is dreadful here. His vocal peak in LZ was from 1969-1972.
yeah, was the beginning of many shows where Plant could sing maybe 4 songs competently. I liked the way he sounded late 70's post throat surgery.
ROBERT PLANT....You Rock!! Sexy thing.

@@samgamblewhite8600 actually no he was sick 2 weeks before this show and he had had a bad "voice breakdown" at the end of 72 and really never was able to sing the same after.
