- In this episode of "What Is On My Wrist" Cam talks about the watch Steve McQueen never wore... Yep, that’s right... Steve McQueen never wore the Rolex Explorer II this is a total horological urban legend. But it is a cool watch regardless that possesses its own cool history independent of the McQueen myth that Cam discusses during this highly requested episode! The Rolex Explorer II Ref 1655 is not only iconic but it is one of the most eye-catching Rolex or models to have ever been released from the brand!

Glad you cleared that up, so tired of hearing that McQueen wore that piece.....now, Ted Koppel wears that particular watch.
William Stalvey heh your welcome 🙏
"Find the picture of McQueen wearing this watch and I will send you a watch of your choosing". Challenge Accepted. I'm going to make a picture of him wearing the watch ;) Great video Cam! Thank you for sharing my dream Rolex on the page!
Course man! I did it for you!! hope you didn't mind my honest and open take on the watch!
Ok, over the course of the last weeks i watched nearly every video on your channel. Big fan! Very informativ, nice pictures and not pretentious at all. That’s how a shop should present their inventory. 👍
Thanks for the comments, my man! We like to keep things fun and interesting, its what part of makes watches so cool in the first place... and we for sure are not your granddads watch dealer 😎
Love when you rant lol! Awesome watch man. Thanks for another history lesson.
Of course my man !!
In the 1970's there was a glossy expensive science magazine called 'OMNI'. From memory, there was a full page Rolex advert. It had a photo of Steve Mqueen, sipping coffee and smoking. On his wrist was his Rolex Submariner 5513. The advert band at the bottom of the photo - was advertising the Rolex 1655 Explorer.
Ayyyye you actually did it! Thanks man. Great work once again!
Course! Im a man of my word! 😎 stay tuned for more soon!!
Your mentioning of cave explorers of the late 60’s and early 70’s reminded me of the movie I had watched in my teens named “The Journey to the Center of the Earth”.
I love that film!!
Brilliant video and really interesting on the McQueen front, you do realise that someone (sad) will now be scouring the internet to prove you wrong and get that watch 😁
You’re correct; Steve McQueen did mention this specific watch in an interview/ magazine article, maybe that’s where this “McQueen” watch comes from. Which interview / magazine I have no idea but keep an eye out religiously,
Will you please tell me what watch strap you are using
Can we all agree , from now on we shall call it the "Messner" , after Reinhold Messner who actually wore the watch as he climbed mountains and explored!?! I also have had a love hate relationship with this watch. some days I can't get enough of it...others I find it too busy. You keep calling it a gmt hand..and in reality its just a 24 hour hand ....not really the same...but the watch would not look the same without it!!
Good vid!
I agree man! There were some other great dudes who wore this reference as well, not sure why the McQueen thing stuck so hard and has continued to stick...
Great video man. 👌🏻
Re: my last about Omni - the tag line for the advert was something like "What's good enough for Steve!!"
Can you please tell me about the color of the original marker of this watch? In your video it looks white color but in others it's kind of yellow.
I think the 1655 could have been conceived as a space watch …(Explorer II in the late Sixties would have been all about space..ie “above Everest”). At one point Rolex decided not to promote “space” in order to differentiate itself from Omega…. So produced the watch but promoted it as a cave explorer watch (go deep if you can’t go high ). To me it has “space vibes” and the dial has something futuristic and technically space age…., is this pure fantasy?
Nice watch, buddy! Looks cool...
Jean Claude Killy was the Ambassador for this watch. I got mine in 1977 and wore it daily for twelve years. 33 years later it still makes me sick that I sold it.
Ohhhhh I hear ya. Got mine in '78 - wore it for 20 years and sold it for like $1200 to get a Submariner. I get sick when I think about the poor financial decision, lol, but more than that...I miss the watch! I just picked up a Steinhart OLKO Special Edition homage that scratches the itch beautifully. I glance at my wrist, and it's 1978 all over agin!
Brilliant mate, YES Steve McQueen never wore the damn thing! Even the Heuer Monaco was only worn for the movie, as far as I’m concerned he was a Submariner guy, 5513 or 5512.
Still love the 1665, it’s the ultimate 1970’s Rolex 👌🏻
Cheers.
Indeed, he actually wore quite a few different watches and even the 1163 heuer Autavia.. have a few good posts about McQueens actual watches on our Instagram instagram.com/craftandtailored/
Why does the price vary so drastically with this watch, I see some for 30k the I see some around 15k I’ve noticed the white and orange hand difference , anything else besides the obvious box/papers?
The Mark variant of the dial, as well as the specific condition of each piece, determine the price point of the1655 the earlier MK variants such as the MK 1 and MK 2 were made in smaller numbers and are more desirable among the collector community. The "albino" or all white hand variants, in my professional opinion, are more of a preference and should really increase the price point. im not a huge fan of the Orange Hands that have gone white as I think teh orange hand is a key feature of the watch but that is just my preference 😎 hope that provides some clarity and help!
It’s the last real tool watch in Rolex catalog .... to be honest, I prefer to travel with this one over the GMT as it’s not shiny (show up) for traveling safe and it’s more comfortable as well. Besides that - the second time zone is way way easier to read than on the GMT ( movement is way robust as well compared to the GMT)
I have one of these.....a 1977. I like it, but I’ve always found the very specific design premise to be absolutely ridiculous. If you are planning on being in a cave for a few days why not just use a GMT (much more versatile watch) with the bezel set to the neutral position? As far as the name, we should just call it the “AM/PM” because that’s all the orange hand does for you. Looks good on a bright orange NATO, BTW.....matches the hand perfectly.
Love this watch. There is controversy as to the dial width. Some say 37mm, others 37.5mm, 38mm, 39mm, 40mm. What's the truth? On the market for one now.
Steve's watch was a 5513, but It's such a shame that the explorer 2 has had the original dial & hands changed during a service, people then just didn't realise then what it was to have it all original.
It is useful for people who live in places where day is 6 mouths and night is 6 mouths.
haha yes this also correct, I could see it also being useful if aboard a submarine 😎
great watch!
great background history . everyone calls it the Mcqueen even the non watch people lol
Sorry, what strap is that? It's beautiful.
Yes, McQueen owned a 5512.
You are correct sir!
You keep referring to the orange hand and the 24 bezel as a "GMT" hand and bezel. They are nothing of the sort, they are not a GMT hand or bezel, but rather they are a "24 hour" hand and bezel. Nothing GMT about them unless you're living in Greenwich, England and set the watch to local time! Now, the Rolex 1675 GMT Master has the same movement (1575), but it's a GMT only because it has a rotating bezel. The 1655 in my humble opinion copied its design from the Glycine Airman (Adrian at Bark & Jack thinks the same). The difference in the early Glycines is that they were "three handers" and ONLY had a 24 hour, hour hand, however they also had a rotating bezel which could track a second time zone, hence a GMT watch. FWIW, I'm a trained Industrial Designer 1978, professional military and international airline pilot and watch collector for 45 years. I concentrate on various aviation watches specifically GMTs and dual time watches, and have owned and worn a 16750 GMT for 37 years, purchased new in 1983. My other GMT/dual time watches include a Sky Dweller, Glycine Airman Base 22, Oris, Modified Seiko SKX (dual time bezel), etc...
Excellent reply. Glad you corrected him. Thanks.
Beautiful watch Rolex Explorer🧭 1655😍😍👍🏻👍🏻
I dont believe this watch can be classified as a gmt. Being you cant track a second timezone with it.
You could technically call it a 24-hour indicator or an am/pm indicator/hand I guess for simplicity sake it is referred to a GMT hand... And if you think about it on an actual GMT it doesn't actually equate from a technical perspective to its namesake which breaks down to Greenwich Mean Time or GMT which is the clock time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. It is the same all year round and is not affected by Summer Time (Daylight Saving Time) clock changes. I mean if we wanted to get super technical 😋
@@craftandtailored i think am/pm indicator hand would be proper.
Inbox. McQueen was an in law great uncle of mine . I’ll be modest any 36+mm royal oak plain Jane. I’ll get my wife’s photo album shortly
The watch looks fake to me......like your tatoos.
don’t be jealous when he looks way better than you and slimmer too 😊
