When I watched your video, those advice was indeed true. For many years Malaysians love to visit Rantau Panjang because of the cheap goods produced by Thais such as football jerseys, rice, crocodile brand cookware, bedsheets or toto where locals call them and some them buy Thai rice. What the man, Sayed meant was that in Southern Thailand they have separatis groups who go against the government because they want autonomy and be independent/ separate muslim state.
@@tokmung4582 Syed is a popular spelling in in Malaysia. People often mistakenly pronounce it Shade. It's a romanised spelling for Arabic Sayyid (sigh-yeed). See, I spell it differently. Never mind the spelling.
Let me correct that. Southern Thailand is ethnically Malay, and the Malays of that region are indigenous [ native ]. Old Malay kingdoms such Pattani and Langkasuka had existed for centuries in that region before they were invaded and became part of Siam. The Malays of southern Thailand therefore consider themselves, and rightly so, as an occupied people and their homeland as being occupied by the Thais. So they are NOT separatists. They are independence fighters.
Rantau panjang is the Malaysian town whereas sungai kolok is in Thailand. There is a train going straight to Bangkok with stopover in hatyai where you can go back to Malaysia again via padang besar, Perlis. I used this route to explore southern Thailand provinces.
nice place this is like indonesia border with malaysia, in sebatik island. there is a house that is built on the border of two countries. the kitchen in malaysia and living room in indonesia. that's interesting
you have to visit TUMPAT TOWN Wat Machimmaram is an impressive Thai Buddhist Temple with a giant sitting Buddha statue located in the Tumpat district of Kelantan, about 20 km from Kota Bharu.
The southeastern part of Thailand used to be the Malay Muslim state of Pattani. During the Anglo-Thai Bangkok Treaty the states of Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan & Trengganu were given by Thailand to the British. Only Pattani remained. The Malays of Pattani waged an independence war against Thailand. But since the 1950s the war had become a guerilla war by a small group of separatists.
The T - shirt printing process is called silkscreen printing, the square box is a fine net with the numbers ( or Names) n u scrape the printing ink onto the cloth n then his buddy uses a hair dryer to dry the paint. Cheers
The wall you see on the Thai side is the flood barrier. Every year during the monsoon season (Nov - Jan) this area is some of the worst area affected by the flood.
The only time I went to Rantau Panjang was a day after our general election in 2018, on the way to Hat Yai running from people talking about politics 😂😂😂 And I'm glad you tried Barbican. It's an Arabic alcohol-free malt. It's a bit expensive. I prefer the one in bottles. 😅
The wall actually to prevent water from flood going into Thailand side every flood's season which is usually at the end of the year to early month of the next year...
Modern Southern Thailand has only been Thai territory since 1909. The British and the Siamese Kingdom split the Malay states where the British kept Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu while the Thai's took Pattani, Yala, Satun, Narathiwat and Songkhla. Ever since that there has been a latent insurgency fighting for union with Malaysia in Southern Thailand. It is common for bombings and attacking Thai security forces there. Malaysia tacitly accepts the current border, but there are political movements in Malaysia to bring back the Malay lands back home. For your reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Siamese_Treaty_of_1909
The condition is just like Ireland and Northern Ireland. Just that the partition of the land are made by the occupiers not by free choice of the Malay Kingdom/ Sultanate at that time.
It’s been a while since I visited Rantau Panjang. The river is Sungai Golok (Golok River) & across it is Narathiwat in Thailand. There’s a duty free shopping zone at Rantau Panjang. Btw, great video Ken! Danke!
Many years ago together with my friends, I took a sampan across the river without our Malaysian passport or border pass. Once across, we took a few minute motorbike ride to a small town nearby for a fee. After, exploring we came back across the river, the same way we went. Then, the town of Rantau Panjang had rows and rows of shops selling Thai handicrafts and souvenirs. Basically, Rantau Panjang was a destination to shop for inexpensive handicrafts and goods.
For your info bro, the villages near the border are mainly Muslim population & they speak Malay rather than Thai. You can find mosques within 2km of each other although Thailand is predominantly Buddhist. And also the fact that you're in the Yala, Pattani province it's mainly Muslim population.
I am so amazed with Kelantenese people... they were so friendly to you Ken😁😁...and what's more important they keep trying to communicate with you.. they even make u to understand the process of making Football T-Shirt hahaha... they explain it well to you guys... although the language barrier i think one of the reason most of them keep reluctantly to speak with you just because they dont really have much choice of words.. but i can see their effort.. ... they even not hesitate to help you each time when you greet them!! ... by saying Hello!!!! Hahahah...
Barbican is said to be a style of carbonated malt drink from Middle East. A lot of fruity flavour to choose from. Since Rantau Panjang is close to Thailand, the weather is hotter than other places in Malaysia. You should try lokcing and Rantau Panjang Ice Cream during the hot sunny day. And also Pulut ayam (sticky rice with fried chicken).
4:28 the border is actually right in the middle of the river..the Thai side built the wall as part for flood mitigation project as the East Coast is prone to flooding during the monsoon season 5:11 the timezone difference is due to Peninsula Malaysia time was adjusted to standardize with East Malaysia back in 1980s. Previously the Peninsular was GMT+7.30.
Actually if you look back to the history, Southern Thailand is apart of Malay land. That's why if you go to some of the South Thai district, such as Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, you will find that there are more similar culture between Malaysia East Coast such as Kelantan and Terengganu people with the South Thai people. The food also not much different. You can watch Mark Wiens channel for food hunting at South Thai region.
Exactly if you know about malaysia it is not really surprising that most of malaysian can speak english well although some have limited vocabulary and not really good pronounciation but we at least can speak the basic one...it is just that malaysia is not really a famous country...that's why foreigner think malaysian is friendly because we can communicate with them...so i'm proud to be Malaysian...hehe😁
Hi Ken! I'm Din here, saw you waiting for the bus to get back to KB yesterday. I can say you only explored 5% of Rantau Panjang, sorry. But here we're famous with a variety of street foods with mixed Thai-Malay touch, as well as like the jersey's seller said; the copy stuffs eg. jerseys, bags, jeans, toys, utensils & etc. You just need to walk a little bit at the junction of signage "This is Rantau Panjang" then you will see an ocean of stall/small shop sellers. If you had spare time not knowing where to go, please come again. I will show you around, from a local perspective. Enjoy being part of Kelantanese culture for the time being!
14:30 - My Guess is they speak more English here than Kota Bharu, because it's an International border.. and it becomes a necessity to communicate with their Thai neighbours.
Their thai neighbours are more proficient in kelantan dialect to communicate though😅 I have thai relatives in pattani and Nakhon Si Thamarat. They prefer to speak in kelantan dialect rather than english, but their pronounciation in kelantan dialect is a bit different (or maybe it just me) Also, English subject is mandatory in our school years so some people already grasp the basics even though they are not fluent.
Very interesting, way off the beaten track. See only friendly people. I think the seafood was a tiger prawn, much larger than a standard prawn and certainly bigger than shrimp. I like them with crispy batter on them.
The concrete wall at the Thailand side is the controversial flood barrier build by the Thailand Govt... During Monsoon season at the end of the year, the River will be rise drastically causing flood due to very heavy rains. So, both Malaysia - Thailand site will be flooded mostly every year. But, by the time the concrete wall construction done, Malaysia side will take in all the flood alone and the Thailand side will stay dry.
You could try to go sebatic island on sabah, is belong to malaysia and indonesia inside one island, and sarawak place call ba' kelalan with longbawan just a sign with one petrol staff incharge on the location.
Steve wore our national team jersey 👍Never thought you'll reach Rantau Panjang, the border town between Thailand n Malaysia. Its even cheaper than Kota Bharu. From Kota Bharu, you'll have to take a bus to Kuala Besut or Merang town for you to go to the lovely islands off Terengganu.
We were there in 1992. Got denied entry as some bloke from Penang at our hotel loaned us his car for a few days. So they made us go back. Nice drive from Penang.
I know this video is 2 years old, but just want to share that Rantau Panjang town IS NOT divided into Half and Half. Rantau Panjang is in Malaysia, the other side of the river (Sungai Golok) is Golok, Thailand, they are separate towns. Many M'sians go over to Golok for a "good time". Cheap booze, Thai massage, great Thai food and of course prostitution. It's a great place to spend a night or 2. There is, however, 1 such town in between Thailand and Malaysia which are like half and half, that's in Kedah state, in a town called Padang Besar, with a border crossing to Thailand, where the town is called Padangbeza... Yes, I've been to that river crossing part, though the last time I stood there, there were no razor wire. Locals from both Kelantan and Golok used to by pass respective immigrations and just hop on a long tail boat on one side and cross over the other. On both sides of the river crossing, border police stand guard and literally NOT close an eye, but BOTH EYES to that. I see in this video that the river jetty part (behind the shoplots) have razor wire now (that said, your video was 2 years ago)
Ah yes, I remember the locals around that river telling me once that they used to just swim across that river whenever they wanted to go into Thailand without going through immigration. At some points along the river, you could just walk across the river to reach the other country. For some, the river is actually a divider between family members as the river separated two Malay regions, one under Malaysia, the other under Thailand.
actually ken, there is a spot where you can cross the river by a boat (ilegally) and usually the local people use this route to the other side because its faster..btw the other side town we call it GOLOK and dont worry its ok to cross using boat eventhough its illegal they wont shot you or anything its illegal in the name only but if you have a transport and wanna go site seeing i suggest go through common route..
Interesting video Ken, I never see thai and malaysia river border although I 've been there before...😃. You looked so cute when you are trying the shrimp haha
...me born in this small kampung,...Pekan Rantau Panjang near to the other riverside of next 2 houses that Ken bought the drink shop. Taught Ken will visit the other side of riverside of the border area so can be seen of my childhood premises. Sooner RP will upgrade to 'Daerah' (District) I think, due for their tourist attraction. Amazing, a lot of changes in this area and indeed the area is well maintained and VERY clean now!
those jerseys are mostly made in Thailand and yes, most of them are sold in Malaysia-Thailand border areas such as Rantau Panjang and Padang Besar, in west coast Malaysia
If you want to drink beer, drink alcohol, you have to cross to Thailand. If you're on the Malaysian side, you can only drink soft drinks and sweetened beverages like Fruit juice
Wow..im malaysian but nver go to kelantan espcially in kota bru or rantau panjang...wow...best view n interesting place at kampong in kelantan..im jealousy 😘😚
Hi Ken. For the wall building along the river, it is actually to prevent the flood. Thailand governtment is making the wall to prevent the big mass flood into their territory. You can search the mass flood happened in 2014 if i'm not mistaken in Kelantan. This flood is very tragic.

Oops..(edited) Not so far from Kota Bharu...Try White House (a cafe) their kaya toast and half boil egg or even Nasi tumpang, recommended.
I propose for the best lunch, try Hoover restaurant. Kelantan also famous with ayam kampung. The best.

What the man, Sayed meant was that in Southern Thailand they have separatis groups who go against the government because they want autonomy and be independent/ separate muslim state.
Yeah that's interesting to know actually
Its actually SYED not SAYED
@@tokmung4582 Syed is a popular spelling in in Malaysia. People often mistakenly pronounce it Shade. It's a romanised spelling for Arabic Sayyid (sigh-yeed). See, I spell it differently. Never mind the spelling.
fairuzuddinandroid yea i know
Let me correct that.
Wow!That man named Sayeed speaks 👍🏻English👏🏻Steve’s very encouraging & sporting especially in your eating shrimp/prawn👍🏻Enjoy & be adventurous,Ken💪🏻

this is like indonesia border with malaysia, in sebatik island.
there is a house that is built on the border of two countries. the kitchen in malaysia and living room in indonesia. that's interesting
Wow that sounds really interesting 😄👍
you have to visit TUMPAT TOWN
Wat Machimmaram is an impressive Thai Buddhist Temple with a giant sitting Buddha statue located in the Tumpat district of Kelantan, about 20 km from Kota Bharu.
Free Pattani!!!!
Good one Ken and Jetlag Warriors. Nice collab 👍
thanks!!
the wall is actually for protect village from flood, kelantan when December January it start to rain heavily.
The true friend is when he/she force you to do something that you don't like. Forcing you to eat seafood for instance. Congrats! 😄

Haha 😄😅
To not eat seafood is entirely your choice, but Ken, you don't know what you have missed in life. Seriously.
The T - shirt printing process is called silkscreen printing, the square box is a fine net with the numbers ( or Names) n u scrape the printing ink onto the cloth n then his buddy uses a hair dryer to dry the paint. Cheers
That was really interesting to see 👍
I suggest you, to visit Tumpat district, I think the long region trip to Tumpat only takes an hour and 30 minutes.
The wall you see on the Thai side is the flood barrier. Every year during the monsoon season (Nov - Jan) this area is some of the worst area affected by the flood.
The only time I went to Rantau Panjang was a day after our general election in 2018, on the way to Hat Yai running from people talking about politics 😂😂😂
And I'm glad you tried Barbican. It's an Arabic alcohol-free malt. It's a bit expensive. I prefer the one in bottles. 😅
Batik shirt it's suitable when for dinner or attend special event
Yeah that's what it looks like 😄😊
The wall actually to prevent water from flood going into Thailand side every flood's season which is usually at the end of the year to early month of the next year...
I'm from Sungai Golok, Thailand the opposite side of Rantau Panjang. I could tell that it's the border of my hometown from the cover of the video. 😊
hi..thank you..im very proud you just visit my hometown..and you walk passby my home..really good vlog traveller..nice bro
For your reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Siamese_Treaty_of_1909
Interesting to know 👍😊
The condition is just like Ireland and Northern Ireland.

I have the same experience..😅
In the past, the northern part of Malaysia and southern Thailand was the sultanate of Pattani
Some history facts always nice to know 👍
For your info bro, the villages near the border are mainly Muslim population & they speak Malay rather than Thai.
Hahahah...
Very friendly and helpful people, that's true 😊

Barbican is said to be a style of carbonated malt drink from Middle East. A lot of fruity flavour to choose from.
Since Rantau Panjang is close to Thailand, the weather is hotter than other places in Malaysia. You should try lokcing and Rantau Panjang Ice Cream during the hot sunny day. And also Pulut ayam (sticky rice with fried chicken).
4:28 the border is actually right in the middle of the river..the Thai side built the wall as part for flood mitigation project as the East Coast is prone to flooding during the monsoon season
5:11 the timezone difference is due to Peninsula Malaysia time was adjusted to standardize with East Malaysia back in 1980s.
Their command of English is really surprisingly good. 👍👍👍
Dont play2 with east coast people.... He3
Exactly if you know about malaysia it is not really surprising that most of malaysian can speak english well although some have limited vocabulary and not really good pronounciation but we at least can speak the basic one...it is just that malaysia is not really a famous country...that's why foreigner think malaysian is friendly because we can communicate with them...so i'm proud to be Malaysian...hehe😁
Of course, it used to be British colony. What do you think 🤔
cause. British invade Malaysia
Yeah hard to explore everything in only one day 😅

14:30 - My Guess is they speak more English here than Kota Bharu, because it's an International border.. and it becomes a necessity to communicate with their Thai neighbours.
Their thai neighbours are more proficient in kelantan dialect to communicate though😅 I have thai relatives in pattani and Nakhon Si Thamarat. They prefer to speak in kelantan dialect rather than english, but their pronounciation in kelantan dialect is a bit different (or maybe it just me)
Also, English subject is mandatory in our school years so some people already grasp the basics even though they are not fluent.
Have you ever heard the kelantanese speak English with kelantan dialact
Very interesting, way off the beaten track. See only friendly people. I think the seafood was a tiger prawn, much larger than a standard prawn and certainly bigger than shrimp. I like them with crispy batter on them.
That is probably just a slightly larger prawn...
Welcome to my hometown,bro..have a nice day!

Haha.. Steve hijacked the closing shot. Way to go Steve. 😂😂😂
That was funny 😄👍
😂😂😂🙏🙏🙏
Hahaha... 😂🤣😝
The atok "syed" is legit 🔥 puk pak puk pak in english. Boom! Wow like duhh atokkkkk 😆
The football jersey shop is catered for their own local district/village team.
actually ken, there is a spot where you can cross the river by a boat (ilegally) and usually the local people use this route to the other side because its faster..btw the other side town we call it GOLOK and dont worry its ok to cross using boat eventhough its illegal they wont shot you or anything its illegal in the name only but if you have a transport and wanna go site seeing i suggest go through common route..
Yeah some people there told us about that 😅
Kan Pak sayed kata "I can get you over there"
Seriously? Is it really safe to cross to that place for staying at there for a few days?
Thanks for the video

the wall is built to control flood sungai kolok. it happens every end of year
those jerseys are mostly made in Thailand and yes, most of them are sold in Malaysia-Thailand border areas such as Rantau Panjang and Padang Besar, in west coast Malaysia
If you want to drink beer, drink alcohol, you have to cross to Thailand. If you're on the Malaysian side, you can only drink soft drinks and sweetened beverages like Fruit juice

Btw the whole of Southern Thailand is predominantly Muslim. Only Northern and Central Thailand is Buddhist.

the wall at Golok site is a flood mitigation wall because golok and rantau panjang always hit by flood every year.

Hi Ken. For the wall building along the river, it is actually to prevent the flood. Thailand governtment is making the wall to prevent the big mass flood into their territory. You can search the mass flood happened in 2014 if i'm not mistaken in Kelantan. This flood is very tragic.
