Thank you so much for this video! I followed it and made the loveliest beret which I use every Winter. I have had so many compliments on it. The music on the video is also lovely, it creates a whole sweet and homey atmosphere.
I tried this with super bulky yarn, casted on 52 stitches and adjusted from there. It ended up a little bit too large and too thick, but I can still wear it. The difficulty that I had was the round needle I was using, because trying to squeeze 110 stitches to a 16 inch wire would probably give me arthritis in the long run. Time to buy new ones! Thank you for the video! I learned how to increase stitches while doing this project, too!
Sorry to hear that. Please don't get disappointed. Now you have more experience and defiantly will make better one. As you mentioned you may chosen the wrong size. There is a table in my website, in beginners section, it is a good guide for different sizes. However, if you have specific question, I'll be more than happy to help you.
Finished...looks great. The rim still seemed too big so I tightened it a bit and added a decorative button. The way the hat lays hides any knitting mistakes I made too. Thanks!
I totally understand that! However having different size of needle & yarn will affect numbers left on the needle. So I don't recommend you to compare mine with yours. However, if you exactly follow my steps you may end up approximately with the same number. Consider that you will knit 2 stitches together for 2 or 3 rows, depending on your size, at the later rows, which basically reduces the number of stitches to half. I hope this answers your concern, let me know if had further question.
I bought bulky size 5 yarn and size ten circular needles. I then used the chart to see how many cast on stitches to make a 21 inch (average female head size). I am up to increasing every 8 stitches and it looks correct. I plan to finish today. So I will let you know.
Increasing can be done after or before cable stitch is completed in the row. It means you won't increase stitches by following "every 6 or 7 stitches" rule when you arrive to that point that cable stitches are forming. you may have two increasing very close to each other. don't worry about that. It won't affect your final work. For decreasing, don't pay attention to cable stitches at all because after that point we are already done with cable stitches. good luck and let me know how it works
ok new yarn and needles...thanks for the chart on your web site! I know thaat other than being small, it does look cute espicially where it decreases at the top. I am determined to get this to work. All other patterns are a bit too confusing.
I am afraid to say no. But I have separate videos for each work that i have done during this video. From Casting on, to doing basic stitches, increasing and decreasing.
I was really excited that I finally found a video for this. But it turned out terrible. What messed me up was at 5:54 when it said "after having enough rows of increase". What does enough mean? I wish it was more specific about "enough" because, never have making a beret before, I don't know if I'm am increasing too much or too little.
Also...I am guessing the holes at the increases are correct and really aren't noticeable in the finished hat. The first set of increase holes make it look kind of cute.
How do you keep going with the increases and decreases with the cable stitch pattern? I really want to add the cable stitch too, but I don't know how to keep going with the pattern when you start increasing and decreasing. Thank you.
Hi! thank you for your video. I see you are using the needles that are attached together (circular I think you call them), my question is, how do you make the two sides come together? I have also circular needles, but I have no idea how to make both ends meet together, Also, I wanted to know, the side you see is the inner pattern right? since you turn it around at the end of the video. Thank you
hi, thank you so much for this video! i knitted a beret and it came out really nice :) i have a question: when i did the increases i ended up with holes in the beret, it still looks good, but i was wondering if that's something that should happen or is there another way to do it?? thanks
Hi! There are two ways of increasing stitches. In one way there would be a hole , as you made, and in another one there is not any hole. If I wanna explain it in words I would say if you twist the yarn while knitting the increased stitch there wouldn't be any holes. I have both tutorial videos in my website in beginners section named as lesson 5 and lesson 6.
another question, I have 2 small balls of yarn 60meters each (65 yards each) and the size of the yarn is 5 for # 6mm needles. do you think it will be enough for this beret?
Liz Gerger If you are making a beret with basic stitches and you don't follow any specific stitch, you can do increasing between them. But if you are following a specific pattern for a ease of work I would recommend increasing stitches only at the beginning and at the end
shinsou24 you don't need circular needles. Though I use circular, I use it as a straight needle. The reason for using circular is only because it was smaller and I could capture closer video for better illustrating my tutorial.
This is a great video but I find the instructions somewhat vague at times. For example, I didn't know how many stitches I was supposed to have on my needle at all during the video except for the first part where you cast on 50 stitches and the last part where you are supposed to bind off with twelve stitches. It's a bit difficult to understand for a beginning knitter such as myself.
When it says at 2:20, to continue knitting for 5-6 centimeters without any increase, is that only doing purl stitches, or alternating between one row of purling to one row of knitting? Sorry sometimes I need really specific instructions to understand something.
brainiacish I understand your point and thank you for leaving your comment. But if you have watched this video you may find out that though I use circular, I use it as a straight needle. The reason for using circular is only because it was smaller and I could capture closer video for better illustrating my tutorial.
brainiacish below the video i already explained that "Though I use circular in this video, I use it as a straight needle. It is only because they were smaller than my regular straight needles and I could capture closer video for better understanding. "
To the beginners-. Well after about 6 hours over 3 days I am done and it looks awful! I followed the instructions and it looks easy but the 60 stitch cast on with the jersey pattern barely fits my 5 yr old daughters head...much less an adult. Then it is somehow too high...even though I measured. I think I had the wrong yarn or needle size. Beginners- stick with exact patterns.
Why do you title this tutorial " How to knit a beret with straight needles" when you are using circular? People who are trying to learn knitting are not versed in circulars. This is misleading. What a drag. I cannot in good conscience recommend any of your tutorials.

And I did watch it. Thank you for being gracious, please forgive me for my irritation. It is just that I haven't been doing this for long, and I am trying to make sense of it. I read all of the comments and thought about how lost I feel sometimes and just had to say it. So, THAT being said, I have changed my mind. And again, thank you for being kind.

Well, it depends on the thickness of your yarn. So it might be good to say about 5 or 6 centimeters of increasing.
Hope it help.

Hi Erika,
It means alternating between one row of purling to one row of knitting. :)
Good luck!
Thank you for this easy tutorial. It wasn't hard to follow and the Jersey knit is awesome.

Mine is number 5.
However, for finding appropriate sizes for yarns and needle you may refer to 'Knitting gauge' section at my website.
:) Thanks for your comment. I will consider it in next videos.
ok new yarn and needles...thanks for the chart on your web site! I know thaat other than being small, it does look cute espicially where it decreases at the top. I am determined to get this to work. All other patterns are a bit too confusing.
This pattern is combination of pattern 19 and 25. I will capture a video for that in the my first available time.
I am afraid to say no. But I have separate videos for each work that i have done during this video. From Casting on, to doing basic stitches, increasing and decreasing.
Could I follow this pattern with my own ribbing choice without ruining the fit?
I was really excited that I finally found a video for this. But it turned out terrible. What messed me up was at 5:54 when it said "after having enough rows of increase". What does enough mean? It is combination of pattern number 19 and 25. Unfortunately i haven't record a video for that.
thank you! i see you knit with yused wool remind me how my mother and me were prepeared wool from old sweters..
thank you!!! i´d made my first beret knitting and its awsome!
Is there an actual written pattern for this hat also.... I really like a written pattern to follow along when I don't have video access....
Cruzn vso I wish I had, but unfortunately I don't have written patterns for my tutorials.
How do you keep going with the increases and decreases with the cable stitch pattern? I really want to add the cable stitch too, but I don't know how to keep going with the pattern when you start increasing and decreasing. Thank you.
Do you know how to knit a reversible beret in round (circulor) ?
Do u have a tutorial for this hat more detailed, for beginners?
Links are below the video in the "about " section
No, my website is totally education oriented.
what sizes did you get?
Love it! Gonna try this after making a beanie!
Hi,
Thanks! It is number 5.
good luck!

Ariana Meijer Hey Ariana,
I stitch them.
I am so happy for you :)
could you tell me please what pattern is on the beret at 00:07
Sorry for inconvenience! I add the link for Pattern 25 blow the video. Please click "show more" to see the link.
hi, thank you so much for this video! i knitted a beret and it came out really nice :) i have a question: when i did the increases i ended up with holes in the beret, it still looks good, but i was wondering if that's something that should happen or is there another way to do it?? thanks

10x. I made it and it looks awesome.
hi, i like your hat, but how many stitches need for a super bulky yarn and the number for the needle Thanks Maru
Hi Maru, 22 stitches is gonna be enough and you need to pick number 11 or larger needle for super bulky.
Can you still knit the other way?
another question, I have 2 small balls of yarn 60meters each (65 yards each) and the size of the yarn is 5 for # 6mm needles. do you think it will be enough for this beret?
I am not sure! But my guess is that it would be enough for a small beret.
When increasing to 7 and 8 do i do do the rows without increasing between them
Liz Gerger If you are making a beret with basic stitches and you don't follow any specific stitch, you can do increasing between them. But if you are following a specific pattern for a ease of work I would recommend increasing stitches only at the beginning and at the end

Amra Dizdar ?
Ese no es el gorro que sale al principio color blanco.. ojala hagas un tutoria con el gorro blanco.
where might I find this pattern?
Sorry if I missed it but what size needles are you using?
How many stitches for worsted weight yarn and needle size? I want to make one for myself, I am 11 years old.
I would recommend size 10 (us size) and cast on 50 stitches.
I really like this video interesting background texture.
oh come oon I didn't want to buy a circular needle but I REALLY have to?? Can I use it for making other things too, not only hats?
you can use circular needles for everything: scarfs, hats, socks etc. my mum uses cricular needles even for jumpers and shirts.
shinsou24 you don't need circular needles.
Though I use circular, I use it as a straight needle. The reason for using circular is only because it was smaller and I could capture closer video for better illustrating my tutorial.
shinsou24 you can even use circular needles as though they are straight!
Do u sell those type of needles?
what size needles?
This is really awesome but how can I knit with circular needles?
Sam Marols You can find other tutorials on RUclips using circular needles.
It is number 5
could I use medium yarn (number 4)?
Thank you!
Yes! Then you need to cast on 85-90 stitches
Wonderful, thanks again!
I am gonna put my viewer's work in my website. If you are interested, send me the picture of your work.
I appreciate it.
You need a picture of this front and back on a model
WHAt do you mean by adding one stitch every five stitches?
It means knit five stitches and then increase one stitch
This is a great video but I find the instructions somewhat vague at times. Maybe, if you have some time you'll record it, it looks very nice. :)
Can man also wear beret
Though it is not very common, but yes they do.
Good Luck :)
tried but im terible:(
sighs
I like your knitting but it is really hard

I'm sorry but didn't this say STRAIGHTS needles?
