    If you had switched it to "HOLD" mode you could have driven it to the track on gasoline and then still had a full battery to do your testing on EV mode.

  • @awesomeairguns
    @awesomeairguns 10 лет назад +20

    I can't believe they didn't use hold-mode so that they could have some battery power for use on the track. The Volt is at its best when it is running on electric power.

    A couple of clarifications. There is no CVT, just electric motors, clutches and a planetary gearbox. Also, I don't think the clutch from the ICE engages unless the Volt is at a fairly constant speed and at specific speed ranges. It would have be interesting to test once with the ICE running and once without. My guess is that it would make no difference.

      Hi Kent, Thanks for the comment but you may want to check your facts. The Chevy Volt has a CVT as standard equipment.

      Here is a video of the Volt's drive train as walked through by Pamela Fletcher. Chevy Volt Powertrain Deep Dive | Part 3
      You're probably right that this is some form of a CVT; however, this is nothing like what I have ever seen in any other car. I have a CVT car and it has a steel belt and two pulleys, which is what most people think of when they hear that term. The Volt does not work at all like these CVTs.
      Best

      The Fast Lane Car Kent is right, no CVT, or transmission in general like most EVs. It just has a couple clutches and a gear reduction.

    • @aventineavenue
      @aventineavenue 10 лет назад +1

      That's right Kent, in other words, the clutches are for low torque demand, higher speed situations where either the pure electric 2-motor mode or the motor-engine mode will be more efficient than just the single drive motor.

    • @KTPurdy
      @KTPurdy 10 лет назад

      Mark Renburke yes, that is my understanding as well. Meaning that the ICE running had no affect on the speed tests. Same as pure battery.

    The 2013 I get to drive never sounds like that....The gas generator only comes on when the batteries have run out of charge. I've never had the engine come on to "boost" the motor.... You will however hear the generator rev up or down if you hammer it with the batteries depleted. If you run the car hard like this when it's fully charged and on battery alone the car performs noticeable better than with the gas generator producing the electricity.
    the 0-60 time on the car is more like 8 something...but it FEELS much faster in real life...for a few reasons. one, the torque really gives you a good plant you in the seat feel you won't get from a typical small displacement 4 cylinder. and 2, it's so smooth and quiet that you can just punch it all day long going as fast as the car can go.

    Have owned hybrids since 2000, Honda, Prius and then a Leaf for the last two years but have just bought a Volt, What a car!
    I liked the efficiency and limited low speed electric running of the Prius so opted for the Leaf to satisfy my desire to have electric drive full time. This was great except had to keep a conventional car for those 5% longer trips. With the Volt I'm still running on electric 95% and have the luxury of longer trips without range worry or having a second car, Best of both worlds.

    I've owned a 2014 model for 5 months now and I think it's the best car I've ever owned. I get, on average, 45 miles on a charge, and a little over 38 mpg when I,m running on gas. When we drive around town, we're averaging over 200 mpg. We took a 2100 mile road trip this summer to the mountains of Northern California and averaged 38.4 mpg. We have over 7500 miles on the odometer and our overall average is about 90.5 mpg. I bought all of the safety options, and my net cost with the federal and state rebates (in California) was $28,500. The car handles very well, and is a pleasure to drive. I did a lot of research before buying and am pleased with my decision. In terms of consumer satisfaction, it was ranked number 1 in the U.S. in 2011 and 2012, but slipped to 3rd in 2013 behind a Tesla and a Porsche mode. I've not seen a down side. I believe the reason G.M. doesn't advertise it is because they lose money on every car. Maybe not a great deal, right now, for G.M. but a great deal for consumers. Just my take.

    Today my Volt drove 64 miles and I got 225 mpg. What does the most efficient prius get? Maybe 60 mpg? The Volt is a game changer. All Vilt owners know it. That is why the Volt has the highest customer satisfaction.

    These guys tested a Volt with a DEAD battery. That is the reason the engine came on. It was in extended range mode which happens after the battery is depleted. Go and try any BEV with a dead battery, it won't move. This video shows the car will do 9.0 seconds 0-60 on a depleted battery. I think that is awesome.
    "The Fast Lane Car" guys shows with this video that are very ignorant. If you are about to test an electric car, do you need to top off the battery first? Duh!

  • @carljaekle
    @carljaekle 10 лет назад +4

    First the car does not have a CVT transmission. 2nd there are scenarios in which the I/C engine drives the wheels in conjunction with the electric motor.

    Instead of "buy it, lease it, rent it, or forget it", you could do a numerical scale. Like 10 is a very strong buy it, 7 is a strong lease it, 5 is a strong rent it, and 0 is forget it. Then there would be some variation, like giving a car a 9 would be you'd still say buy it, but there are some things about it that you don't like. So a 9 would be a strong buy it, instead of a very strong buy it. Then when you compare cars, you could say "Well the Leaf got an 8 on our scale, but we're going to have to give the Volt a 9." So both would still be a "buy it", but you'd like the Volt more. Kinda like a combination of the current scale and the one you just proposed at the end of this video. Hope you like my idea!

    Volt is a great looking car. Front end is sexy, although the rear could have been better, still looks decent and different. Has 273 pounds of instant torque, it is incredibly fun to drive and overall one of the best rides available. And screw the track, this car is for the real world, not the superficial wasteful track.
    ELR = waste of money/way overpriced, you'd truly be dumb to get an ELR over a Tesla
    Diamond White or Red Volt with polished rims over an ELR easily

  • @Trades46
    @Trades46 9 лет назад +1

    If the car was driven to the track in Hold mode (keeping the battery untouched) and raced in EV mode it would have probably beaten the Mazda 6 time. The petrol engine switch is designed to be imperceptible in regular driving, but in performance driving the engagement process is more complex which saps available power to aid in the engine/electric motor switch.

  • @kirbyswarp

    I agree with Nathan. The Pruis's interior is downright awful. the Leaf is better, but not as nice as the Volt. Plus the Volt has more EV range, handles better, faster, looks better (imo) and generally better than the other two in everything but rear seat room.
    But what's more important, a third rear seat, or the rest of the car. You rarely have more than 2 people in the back.

      We do real world testing and I did not bash the Volt in the least. I drove it in real world conditions as a regular car. I made no concessions for the vehicle at all. I tested it as I would any other car. The back seat, fit-&-finish and base stereo were my only complaints.

    • @NathanDAdlen
      @NathanDAdlen 10 лет назад +1

      ***** Fully charged 0 to 60 mph averaged 9.24 seconds after three runs at about the same elevation. So, the results are pretty close. It's still pretty quick for this class.

    • @aventineavenue
      @aventineavenue 10 лет назад +2

      ***** "The engine may still have turned on anyway. I believe in high acceleration and at speeds above 70 mph the engine drives the wheels."
      Not true, the engine NEVER comes on while the Volt battery is above ~20% state of charge (unless selected manually via Hold mode of course); floor it and it will go from 0 to 101 mph (governed) seamless and all electric.
      The engine is weak torque-wise and not useful as a acceleration tool in this car. It serves only to generate electricity (and nice "waste" heat in winter when temps are below 15 degrees F), and in steady state (cruise control) driving but ONLY after the battery is depleted, Then clutch may directly latch the engine in but that is only for maximum mpg efficiency as simply running a generator is more lossy (that's why the BMW i3, a much lighter car with a 2 cylinder range extender, is only rated at 39 mpg highway on gas, versus the Volt's 40 mpg rating)
      The GM engineers did quite a fine job utilizing all the electric and gasoline "tools in the toolbox" with this car, while giving the driver the ability to customize their efficiency versus performance in a pretty wide range. And you can still just drive it like a regular car, ignore all the fancy gauges, simply plug in at night, drive all day, repeat, and go to the gas station when it says "Fuel low". You'll probably still average over 100 mpg/65 MPGe.

    • @ZenerDragon
      @ZenerDragon 10 лет назад

      nathan adlen Did you guys have enough stuff in the back? How much fuel in the car? The manual states if you don't intend to run the generator (I rarely if ever do and my gf only does maintenance mode, you're supposed to keep the tank with only 3 gallons in it. Also when the car is running in CS mode it's using the generator portion strictly to generate power. When the battery has usable charge it uses the traction motor and the generator as a motor to increase efficiency and available power. Only after 70mph does CS mode have an advantage over EV. Please do a hot lap with a full battery. The least you guys could have done was put the Volt in 'Hold' mode on the way to the track. Then you would've had a 50% charge for track tests.

    • @ZenerDragon
      @ZenerDragon 10 лет назад

      Johnny Rocket the engine will only come on if hold/mountain mode is engaged, battery is below SOC threshold or outside temperature is below 35 or 15 degrees depending on a configurable setting. There are NO instances where a large draw on the battery will cause spontaneous ignition of the generator. Get your facts straight. Source: we own two of these cars.

    I have a 2015 cmax and I think I would have been happier with the Volt. Thank God I am leasing the cmax at a good price for 3 years, the range is not great on battery, the best I did is 25 miles. In the summer, knowing hybrid systems and driving them I did 47-53 mpg combined in hybrid mode eco at normal speeds. Acceleration is a good short under 8 seconds for me 0-60, handling is a little troublesome, got better handling in my Prius, headroom is good although I never sat in the back seat but other passengers did not complain , I am thinking in 2 more years I will turn the cmax in and buy a Volt and then buy an all electric used leaf and upgrade the batteries to at least 150-200 mile range, I will also charge the leaf with spare power from my solar home panels. This will keep me happy driving an all electric car locally and a hybrid on my long distance fishing trips (yea my wife loves those lol) > It's a good way to deal with range anxiety and lower the cost of owning an all electric 300+ mile range car !!

  • @bkanegson
    @bkanegson 10 лет назад +2

    Prefer the new ranking system.
    Car accelerates faster (!) in sport mode with charged battery than after battery has been emptied. Fair test of best performance would be to start with a well charged battery. Have had gen 1 Prius, gen 2 Prius, Lexus CT200H, and I most prefer the Volt. Silent, solid, better interior, and in all but long range driving, better mileage. Drove first 1500 miles on less than 4 gallons.

  • @zio205iq2
    @zio205iq2 8 лет назад

    You can charge the Volt battery half way using the "mountain mode" parked or driving allowing for full EV driving in sport mode after gasoline powered charging. Don't feel bad, most dealers don't seem to know how to re-charge the battery using the ICE. Using "Mountain" mode allows for remote gasoline powered recharging, which GM decided to limit to 50% of the battery charge for some reason, a mistake to be sure.

    • @hainesk967
      @hainesk967 10 лет назад

      Yeah, if the fuel is more than 1 year old, it will automatically burn the fuel to make sure it doesn't go bad in the tank. Most people will just keep a gallon or two in there so that after 1 year the car only burns a gallon or two, also for weight.

    Personally, I don't find the "Buy it, Lease it, Rent it, or Forget it" rankings all that useful. In fact, I never really liked it. I know it was a hook to make the show unique but now that you are established and popular it would be nice to see a change in how rate the cars. You can still comment each to whether or not you would actually lease or own the car you tested, but I think the simplest of rating systems would work best and that is 1 through 10. Thanks.

    It almost seems that once Chevy decided to get into the electric/hybrid car game, it was like an after thought once they released the Volt. Not to dog it I think the styling could have been much fresher looking. Granted it does look better than the Prius or Leaf, but in comparison to Ford Hyundai Kia, the Volt is a mutt. And although the Volt out preforms the Prius and Leaf to some degree the lack of simple luxury amenities make it feel budget quality. Not totally a deal breaker, it's just that it would be a step up if power seats and a few other things were added. All in all..I think Chevy could stay alive in the hybrid game, I just hope they keep improving it over time; really developing the cars future. I'd keep the rating process simple....I like the ranking system batter than buy it rent..what ever. LOL

      I never got under 42. I also run it on the highway, then use the battery for city stop and start type driving. I'm very surprised that they say 37 miles on the battery. I get 40 (in the worst of the winter) to 50 in the summer.
      The car is what owners say it is. Damn fun to drive.

    "you can own the Volt your entire life and never use a drop of gas". Not true. The volt will use about one tank of gasoline per year if it is consistently driven short distances from full charge. This is done by design since the gasoline engine needs to run occasionally and gasoline goes bad after a few months.

  • @jediman114
    @jediman114 10 лет назад

    Also the gas engine just moves the wheels. Doesn't actually charge the batteries that move the wheels. It is not like a hybrid.

    • @SlipknotMaggot0526

      How would the batteries charge then?

    • @jsvickers725
      @jsvickers725 10 лет назад

      SlipknotMaggot0526 Normally the car has to be plugged in to charge. There is a special mode called "Mountain Mode" that will charge the battery and maintain it at about 40% so that it can use the additional battery power to help climb steep inclines without a loss of power. This mode has to be manually selected by the driver and is not intended as a way to charge the battery. Using this mode just to charge the battery a little has a pretty significant impact to the MPG when running the gas engine.

      if you can afford an ELR then you can afford a Tesla, and to get an ELR over a Tesla is literally the dumbest thing you can possibly do.
      Volt is better than the ELR.
      ELR is way too angular looking, its good looking but way overpriced and not worth it in any way. Pearl white or red volt over an ELR easily

    You make the claim that you can "use the car the entire life without using the petroleum engine" however in the US there is no switch to disable the Petroleum engine from kicking on. (the switch is standard equipment in europe) i weird omission that supposedly was due to safety standards in the US? idk if you ever talk to someone from GM can you ask them why they did this for the states?

    • @BassRacerx

      necropost but there i was commenting on the fact that in the USA you will likely use at least a little bit of gasoline every time you drive the car because you have no actual control over if the starting of the combustion engine.

    CVT? Nope. At least not the normal meaning of the term. It's an electric car. It needs no gear ratio changes. It does have clutch packs, but for mode changes, not up and down shifting.

    Many already said it but talk about a major foul up running the batteries down before the test. Even though it did run in hybrid mode, it changes nearly every aspect of the way it runs in electric - gas mode and none of your times are therefore valid. In fact, you should delete this video and do it again because it's basically giving false data. Yes, you mention that you ran the battery dead ( actually to probably 20 %)

  • @paulgraham6353

    This review is misleading. He starts out saying, "The engine is boosting." as the car accelerates. It is not boosting anything. The next guy says, "Like a Hybrid". This is absolutely wrong. The engine doesn't help drive the wheels as the engine of a hybrid does. Only the electric motor drives the wheels. The engine charges the battery. Under load it may very well turn on but it isn't helping drive the wheels.. It is maintaining a level of battery charge, it does not to help push. It does not "Boost" the power, "Like a Hybrid". The electric motor does all the pushing. The gas engine powers a generator for the battery charge. With a full charge it will not turn on, even if you, "Floor it". With a partial charge sure, it may come on but that is to keep the battery charged not make the car go.
    Pleasant fellows but they don't explain the concept clearly. They sound confused themselves. If one didn't already know how it operates, they'd most likely never figure it out listening to those two.
    Ya really need a power seat ? Lotta bells? Good! It had better. The thing will usually start moving with no sound at all. A driver could stop, assume it is off, when it is still ON because the gas engine is not running. Just take your foot off the brake thinking it is off and it could move making no sound at all...so good, lots of warning bells so you don't hit anything or worse get out and walk away as it drives off. Beep, I'm going to back up now, Ding I am in drive now, there is no engine noise unless the battery wants to be charged. Also an electric motor has max power from zero. You'll never hear it rev up when it accelerates like a mussel car does to generate max power. I found the same thing with the Prius. That is hybrid because the gas engine does in fact, "Boost" and work to drive the wheels with the electric motor. It is still something to get used to because when when it's charged up, it will move for a while under electric power alone, without the gas engine to boost it. Grateful for the bells and warning lights in the Prius hybrid. Need them even more in a pure electric.
