  • DIY Water Filter. Homemade "High-Volume" Water Filter. Easy DIY. Fast Filtering - makes a glassful in seconds (whole gallon in just over 3 minutes). low cost ~ only $7.00 for supplies ($6 for the carbon and $1 for the coffee filters). with proper maintenance it should last for years. removes virtually all sediment, any bad odors/smells/tastes and over 200 chemical contaminants (including herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals etc.). i constructed it mainly to make my tap water taste good (it's so full of chlorine and other junk, i can barely keep it down). use the filtered water for drinking, cooking, making ice etc. works perfect with any tap water (rain water too). can also be used with pond/river water (just boil it first, to remove any pathogens) then put it thru the filter. tips: construct using a one liter bottle and the whole carton of carbon for maximum filtering. double up the screen inside the bottle cap if necessary. use a new coffee filter between uses. when done using it, discard the coffee filter and remove diffuser to dry.

    the more or bigger holes on the cap will let the flow of water be faster or slower but to much holes and water passing too fast does not let the carbon do it`s work,,,actually the slower the better , water then keeps more contact with the carbon to do it`s job...is not about speed of flow ,is about efficiency to remove particulates!

    • @thermophile2106
      @thermophile2106 5 лет назад +9

      If you want it to be fast, just use more carbon. That way the water is in contact with the carbon for longer. The carbon will also last longer that way.
      Or, just let it filter slowly.

    I made one of these but I didn't have the metal screen to put in the cap. In spite of my washing the charcoal the water kept putting out black particles so I moved the coffee filter to the end of the process. I put a funnel into a 2-liter bottle and the coffee filter into the bowl of the funnel, then use the homemade water filter over that. Works pretty well.

      Depending on what kind of hazard is in the water, don't put too much faith in charcoal alone to save your life. It removes unpleasant tastes, chlorine, sediment, and VOCs; but it does not remove inorganic substances (which includes heavy metals), or all pathogens.

      @@TheBryce98 : That's why using one or two inches of quarter inch pea gravel first, and then put a filter over that and then two inches of clean course sand and filter, then the activated charcoal. It's always good to get the water tested first, because if it's city water you might just want to use activated charcoal only. If it's for camping and unknown water quality it's better to boil it after filtering it.

      hi. there's no aluminum used in this setup (so that's good). the lid (diffuser) is steel or a steel alloy. the bottle itself is plastic but i don't see that as an issue. almost all of the water goes through the center area so there's no contact with the plastic. and the water that does touch the bottle only touches it for a few seconds (much too short of a time to cause any issue). maybe you could line the bottle with something. copper foil maybe? i've bought some of that but never used it in a project yet.

      +Keko Jones hi there. the proper care and maintenance would be: pulling out the metal diffuser and drying it off to prevent rusting. removing the wet coffee filter after use to prevent mold buildup near and on the surface of the carbon. replacing screen in bottle cap if necessary and then just don't knock it over and it should last for years. (activated carbon can last up to 5 months - under constant use - so if used a couple hours each day, it should last several years)

    Hello desertsun02, Great video thanks for the idea! I am a novice and interested in doing this, can I ask you a question about carbon mesh size? I've read that basically the finer the mesh the more advantage you get with contact time & purity, BUT at the cost of SLOW filtration. Basically you have pros & cons, to each his own preference!!
    The water passes thru your filter very quickly. Do you know what size mesh of carbon you are using? I would actually prefer more contact time with the carbon, I have more of a wait for it preference...I'm looking at purchasing bulk carbon and it'd be cool to have a reference point for this video in relation to mesh size. The mesh sizes available to me are 4x8, 8x16, 8x24, 12x30, 12x50, and 12x60. Would love to know what size you're using for a speed reference! Thanks desertsun!

      No it's not remove fluride and all another chemical, bleach etc, only way to get pure water is water distilling or reverse osmosis.
      For example you put salt in water and mix up,water is salty and it's going true any filters and taste salty but when you distilling salty water it's separate water from salt,water turns tasteless like it's must to be and salt stay on the bottom because it's heavier to steam molecules, same like rain gives you pure water untill it's contact with another dirty things. You welcome.

      You would have to take a parts per million tester and do a before-and-after test. Whatever parts per million is left let's say it went from 200 parts-per-million to 100 that means it reduced 50% of whatever was in there including fluoride and chlorine. But activated charcoal may or may not take out more chlorine than other hard minerals either way it's known for having tons of surface area and tiny holes all throw out carbon and so it just absorbs everything except the water

    After 6 months I soak the carbon in distilled water and it seems to work. Water tastes better afterwards. Has anyone else done this or do you all just change the carbon every 6 months to a year?

    If you drill sharp metal hold it with a tool not your hands. If drill snags on the metal and it spins with the drill you could end up with a nasty injury.

    Any problem if carbon never dries off? Considering I'll use it on a daily basis to cook + drink water, etc...
    Also, is it true you can just boil the carbon or dry it under the sun to re-use it?

    Hi, I've tried to rinse off the carbon but it just doesn't stop rinsing off the dust...so u know how long it takes or it depends on the product cause I'll just get what purchased? I have Deep Blue professional activated carbon btw

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  8 лет назад +3

      +Keko Jones hi. The rinsing phase varies widely. it can take anywhere from 5 mins to 30 mins (just depends on how much "dust" is in the particular batch you purchased). good thing is you only need to do that once

    Will this remove most if not all TDS? I want to remove any dissolved sodium particles that still remain from what my soft water system produces.And of course any remaining unwanted iron. My RO system isn’t the greatest so I still could use some extra filtering.
    Also have you thought of adding an alkalinity stage to this filter?

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  Год назад

      hi there. this system is great at removing TDS. the activated carbon is very good at that.
