    I'll be showing you how to make a three bucket filter and purifier for making almost any water safe to drink, using no to low cost materials and basic tools.
    Filmed and deployed at the Rhino refugee camp in northern Uganda, where we are training South Sudanese and Congolese refugees how to build their own low tech alternative infrastructure from recycled and repurposed materials.

    I noticed something really beautiful there. Everybody was excited about the new water system, and after the mayor did the first taste, he passed the mall ground. Everybody there got to drink from the very 1st cup of water from the system.
    Forget about Western ideas. That’s not what this is about.
    Everybody there was able to participate in that first inaugural moment. Everybody there was important. Everybody there took a small, moderate taste and left lots for the next people.
    The rest of us could learn an awful lot.

    Hi, thanks so much for your clear and simple explanation of how this type of filter works. Taking your idea and another for a barrel filter I have made a filter for myself to use on my off grid land. All the contents of your buckets are layered between fine mesh in a single Barrel with a tap at the bottom. Water is poured in from the top and kept topped up so the sand never dries out. Thank you so much for your inspiration. I had never made a filter before and now feel so much happier that I can. (The water will still need to be boiled for safety but I can filter rainwater I collect now).

    Great project Daniel!
    Activated charcoal can be prepared if you throw red hot charcoals in water. Steam will open up the pores and will make it better absorbant.
    I would still boil the water before drinking just in case.
    I read that charcoal made of denser wood and in particular the nut shells is superiour to the ordinary charcoal but I'm not 100% sure about it.
    In Russia you would also take 5-6 tablets of charcoal in case of minor food poisoning (hangover) and it helps.

      it's not really needed and also they would have to prefilter a bunch of water before doing that which is kinda a waste when regular charcoal in enough amounts with different coarse particulates will do the job fine. Boil at end is always a smart thing also.

    • @OpenSourceLowTech
      @OpenSourceLowTech  4 года назад +4

      Depends, 24 hours is usually safe. Keep in mind it has to be a plastic bottle, as glass blocks most UV, and has to be filtered first or the microbes can be shadowed by particulate contamination.
      There we were just using cooking charcoal produced locally, but activated is best.

    For your work... won my respect...
    I have a little suggestion for improvement.. I must tell you..
    I tried it myself...using 6 inch PVC pipe.
    Made this kind of drinking water filter..
    The difference is that I added an air pressure space at the bottom.
    Simply put, it is to seal the water outlet.
    Use transparent tube...
    My experience. The speed has increased by 3 times.
    My English is not good. Sorry.

      Made from this concept...
      I try to explain...
      6 inch PVC pipe: I made 6 spacer boards with feet (drilled holes).
      In this way, each layer of filter material will have an air chamber.
      There is no filter material at the bottom..
      The lowest way to seal..
      Drill a hole and use glue to connect a transparent tube.
      At the beginning, the outlet pipe should be blocked first, and then the water should be filled.
      After a few minutes, when the air pressure below builds up...
      Then let the water flow out..
      The material is 1. Cotton cloth 2. Stone. 3 Fine sand 4. Charcoal.

      I looked at options for doing that, but even tho there were several which were fairly low tech, they were all a bit more energy and or chemically involved than I'm really happy having people have to do.
      Have been looking at other options to the char, like iron oxide, which may work better and be a bit easier to source and work with.

    Bless you Daniel. I am an old woman in the US and was looking for a diy way to filter and reuse shower water that has soap in it. I nearly fell over seeing you filmed this at Rhino camp. I have a young friend who lives at Rhino camp and he reached out to me to help him with his writing. I met him through my refugee son in Kampala who became my son long distance as a result of a writing assignment. Both young men hold humanitarian positions to help refugees. I just write about them and have become their second mom. Small beautiful world. Do you have the specifics of the size screens for the various particulates? I plan to run it through my Berkey filter at the end of your process. Any thoughts on soap removal? Bless you Bless you Bless you.

    • @OpenSourceLowTech
      @OpenSourceLowTech  2 года назад

      Thanks. Who do you know there?
      The screens were just what we could get which seemed to work, it shouldn't be so sensitive that you need to break out the callipers, just eyeball it.
      Detergents and the like can be tricky to filter, I'd probably look at bioremediation, ie a reed bed or the like, if that's an option.

      Ok, makes sense. Keep in mind that these types of filters generally perform better after a couple of days to weeks of use, as the sand will in that time develop a biofilm layer which digests microbes, and the charcoal will further activate as the pores flush out a bit.
      But if it's going to be potentially years without being used or cleaned then it may make more sense to store it dry as you have it. I'm not actually sure...

    • @OpenSourceLowTech
      @OpenSourceLowTech  5 лет назад +6

      Essentially with this design I just replicated known approaches. Given that the water these guys have access to can be a bit... chunky... I figured the gravel first would be good to take out the larger particulates, and is easier to wash regularly than the char.
      But I've also seen configurations like you describe, I'll keep it in mind as an optimisation, especially as it would be trivially easy to change the order of buckets.

    • @1980Baldeagle
