Fluoride was put in the water to reduce dental cavities in the early 1900s. As a dentist, I do not think that putting fluoride in the water is a good way to prevent cavities. Cavities are entirely preventable through diet and hygiene. Fluoride needs to have a longer “contact time” with the teeth to support remineralization. Fluoride is not meant to be ingested. I don’t understand the logic behind (even insignificantly*) poisoning the entire population on the basis of (also insignificantly*) preventing dental cavities that - not the entire population - struggles with.

To believe that the government cares about cavities so much that they go through the added expense to add fluoride to our water is pretty silly if you think about it.
Fluoride is a byproduct of processes and is easily disposed of by adding it to our water in the name of "caring for your health"

Blacks who live in high crime zipcodes are prone to violence from the get go (I'd refer everyone to the book "Don't Make the Brown Kids Angry) the lead in the water supply likely isn't substantially different from what they would be exposed to back in their homelands.
@@mattappleton3399 That's surely part of it but if you look at crime statistics before and after they banned lead in gasoline it's pretty compelling evidence of a connection between lead exposure and violence/criminal tendencies. So drinking it... You can imagine the effects they might have.

Hello, Biochemist here. I noticed there's a little mistake in the video regarding the effect of calcium and magnesium on the hydrogen ion concentration in tap water. Adding calcium and magnesium to tap water does NOT INCREASE the hydrogen ion concentration, but rather reduces it through a process called neutralization. Calcium and magnesium ions can even react with excess hydrogen ions to form insoluble compounds, which in turn reduces the acidity of the water and increases its pH. Additionally, the introduction of charged species such as calcium and magnesium can decrease the activity of hydrogen ions in solution, which also reduces the acidity of the solution. Therefore, calcium and magnesium in tap water reduces its acidity, not increase it. A little mixup with the terms. Hope this helps to clarify any confusion!
Thank you, I work in Water treatment, he acts like we don't track DBPs, and fluoride, he conflating water all over the world with water in the US, the EPA provides guidelines or rules that we have to follow and we also have to provide the Public with a CCR that let's them know what the characteristics of their tap water..

@@Rau-AR PH isn't as important as the essential minerals in water. It is the Alkalinity along with the Hardness of the water is what determines what pH is stable vs corrosive or scaling. If you have a low pH that is corrosive then it will rob your body to stabilize itself that's why some bottled water is really good for you. Typically 7 is neutral anything above 7 is basic and below is acidic, but it depends on the Alkalinity (buffer capacity to resist acid) and the Hardness which is mostly made up of Magnesium and Calcium, chlorides and sulfates also. So your water can be corrosive at an 8 pH.
@@mjsup1 I'm also a water treatment Operator and we use chloramines in order to reduce DBPs and other mitigation procedures. We monitor DBP and fluoride closely as well.

So happy you are talking about this. I was enrolled in a certificate course regarding water system operations in California and was astonished at the acceptable levels of toxic materials within the water transport and storage systems.
Wait, I'm a class A water operator, and the heavy metals limit for decades has been ZERO, ESPECIALLY FOR LEAD AND COPPER.
I submit a sample that's over 0.0 parts per TRILLION of lead that requires a whole review and mitigation process, and I'm in Missouri, I'd guess CA is FAR more stringent. For bottled water it's the same as food, it's FDA approved. Bottled water has the same standards as hot dogs. My tap water at it's absolute worst illegal level of turbidity is 16x cleaner that bottled water can be.
Tap reg is 0.3ntu. bottled water limit is 5 ntu. Five.
Anything over 0.3 can hold pathogens.

They need to put Tylenol in water too so people don’t get headaches. And maybe some lotion so people don’t get dry skin. That’s similar to the mentality of drinking fluoride. It’s one thing to apply it to teeth and then rinse it out but to drink it internally is like drinking lotion to keep your skin from getting dry.
It is part of the nanny state approach: people won’t take care of themselves, so we will do it for them. Of course that leads to all sorts of unintended consequences.

In Dryden Ontario Canada, my little town vetoed the fluoridation of our towns water. Im pretty stoked ngl.
I had to go and actually check with my water supplier (that supplies the whole community with water) about the quality of our water because of this! 😆. I live in Sweden and as far as I know we have great water. But I wasn't sure about these things so I asked them. But I was right! We get all our water straight from an underground source without any type of cleaning or chloride. Just clean water! That is why we never buy bottled water, because that is way worse. We have better water on the tap! If I want it sparkled I just add some. 😄

Really grateful for having great tap water here in Iceland, nobody drinks bottled water here but I believe the tap water is low in minerals. I've noticed that egg shells are thinner and not as strong as in most other places maybe because of the lack of minerals in the water. No need to filter the tap water, the porous lava in the ground naturally takes care of it :)

The farms may not be supplementing the chickens. After the pandemic i saw a decline in the quality of eggs in italy and the shells got thinner as economic problems led to the loss of quality in many things. I used to supplement my chickens with crushed oyster shells. The eggs shells were so hard.

How often are the water pipes looked at, replaced, etc?
Two years ago I bought a system called Nuvia that filter my water and came with a reverse osmosis system to have safe drinking water. I just asked a third party to check my water and all seems amazingly good. It’s not a cheap system no doubt but I gotta say that since I have that system my hair stop falling. I’ve been fighting with my inexplicable hair loss and it was shocking to realized it was the water so this was a plus . I highly recommend to get home water tested.

You need a safe water treatment system that works for you. Sometimes it's unavoidable and you have to pay more than you would like. I'm glad you had yours 3rd party test and it is doing it’s job.

@@wefsux that's because ro removes pretty much everything from water including "ph buffers" like Ca and Mg. Just by exposure to air (CO2) ro water will become more and more acidic.
This is largely simplified.
That being said you can't simply add certain elements back in e.g. you can't just add Mg to get to the levels mentioned in the video because Mg doesn't exist on it's own. You'd be adding something like magnesium sulfate. You don't want that.
So maybe use a different filtering method. Or keep using ro and A add something like sodium carbonate / baking soda (watch out for sodium!) or B get an ionizer and/or a remineralization cartridge for your ro system.

In Switzerland here, just at the feet of the mountains where I live, I must believe that our tap water is excellent and does not suffer from these issues - at all.

i have a quadruple filter with a separate reverse osmosis tank. I also have a shower filter. I dont trust my government at all to take care of such things.

Not necessarily, check if there was any mining activity in the area in the past.
If so there might be a change of cadmium, aluminum, arsenic contamination. Even tiny levels have impact on health.

I'm a civil engineer (we are the professionals responsible for identifying useful water sources, extracting the water, purifying and distributing it). ALL WATER contains things that are bad for the biology of our cells. Not just tap water, ALL water. The issue is the concentrations. The EPA, for example, sets maximum concentrations of heavy metals and all kinds of compounds that have been found to be dangerous or detrimental for humans (and some cases where no evidence was found but ''better safe than sorry'' rule was applied). Most countries, even shitty ones like my own, follow the same guidelines that all of the developed world follows, and it's basically the same for tap water and mineral bottled water. You can google your favorite bottled water and look for example how much arsenic it has (spoiler alert, it's more than 0 mg). Yes, even your expensive bottled water has arsenic.
Basically, this is kind of true and kind of bullshit. There's no reason to panic about tap water unless you specifically live in a country with no regulations, which I honestly don't think there can be many of those outside certain regions in Africa.
Yes but less is better, so why not try to get to zero and remineralize? Id rather filter out the ssri, birth control, microplastic, endocrine disrupters as much as I can. Even if its 3x less than the regulations allow, its worth it to me.

if you live in an older home one thing to be wary of is epoxy pipe lining. to save costs instead of replacing old pipes they've sometimes been coated, which might still be fine for sewer pipes but in water lines that epoxy coating is shown to be a significant source of contaminants and BPA

Oddly enough, my parents, uncle, and grandparents owned a water shop. I worked at 2 of them. First we'd sediment filter it, ozonate it, carbon filter it, then either reverse osmosis or distill it.
I've been kinduva water snob my whole life. I wasn't obnoxious or anything, but I just never drank tap (unless i was dying of thirst). I could always taste the difference.

Glad I drink highly tested, barely filtered mountain water from my tap up in Canada. I helped them pull a sample from the well 1km from my house, couldnt be happier with the results.

@@tardwrangler What's the conspiracy theory here? That water fluoridation is intentional to dumb down the masses? Does seem largely unsubstantiated. I think the simpler explanation is that there's a lot of flouride/flourine generated by various industrial processes, and naive scientists and politicians saw an easy way to get rid of it in a way that they possibly thought was beneficial for people at large. But that may be a little too generous, quite honestly.

PFAS and other manmade chemicals are the real danger that we need to filter for. Fluoride at the levels included in drinking water (put there intentionally for dental health) is not dangerous.
"It depends" is the right answer I guess. My dad and also my uncle were working for many many years in a very modern water facility in Germany. They and our whole family were always drinking tap water at home without the use of any filter, because they knew better than anyone else how good the water quality in our region really was.
Now I live in the US and sadly noticed that I would not drink tap water without a filter on daily base. Just the taste of the water is often bad and they have to put a lot of chemicals in there to make it "safe". Sure this depends also on your region, but in general tap water quality here requires a filter in my opinion. At least in my area.
However, I am super thankful that the HOA of our high rise building decided to buy an idustrial grade water filter system which gets checked by a lab frequently. So many people who live here are able to fill up their water containers there instead of buying water in the super market. Also all water used in the gym comes from that source as well. Now we are able to reduce plastic trash, save money and get a better water quality than any smaller filter system could do.
So when my dad and my uncle were visiting us here, we showed them this filter system and they thought that this is a good quality filtration system. For nearly 10 years my wife and I are drinking a gallon of this filtered water per day and have zero health problems (also thyroid and testosterone levels are great).
My cousin in Germany is the plant manager at a water treatment plant. They do not fluoridate nor do they chlorinate their water. They filter through bedrock then ozonate the water. Done.
What many people do not realize about fluoridated water is the fluoride incorporated into the water is a byproduct of the fertilizer industry. That’s right we in eastern Canada truck our fluoride up from Jacksonville Florida as a toxic substance and dump it in our water. Try to wrap your mind around some synthetic substance at toxic levels pumped into your water and that’s ok because it’s diluted. Ok, but what the heck is it doing on the inside of our body.
This is another example of big business having waste products they need to deal with and can’t by environmental reasons… so let’s make so kind of product and sell it. Vaseline is another example.

Conspiracy theorists don't naturally orient toward conspiracy theories. They've simply overcome their innate bias against conspiracy theories.
This is a balanced take, and 100% true…. In most urban environments a simple Brita (carbon filter) changed regularly, once a month for a family, once every 5-8 weeks for a single, is sufficient. Rural agricultural areas, have significantly different toxic pollution in them, and likely require a Reverse Osmosis filter. If you do use RO, you have to add minerals back, as they strip everything and that is dangerous too.
How do you add minerals back? And wouldn't you get these minerals in other foods?
@@wefsux there are mineral drops designed exactly for that purpose, to re-mineralize RO or distilled water. You could also use a bit of sea salt, and epsom salt to save money, but you’d need a TDS meter to adjust the right quantity, too much for most. When water has no minerals it will leach it out of your body and bones, OK short term, but not long term. Food is generally not sufficient unless you eat lots of rich soups, stews and broths regularly.
Just eat healthy and drink water. That's all. Capitalism will scare you with anything to sell you something. I drink well water through a Brita filter mostly, mainly because it tastes better. People will tell you distilled water is bad for you. Sure, if you're on a prolonged water fast, distilled water won't cut it. But this is why we eat food.
Brita only removes large molecules like odour. They’re useless.
I use reverse osmosis that has a medical grade calcium and magnesium releaser on it, I use APEC ro it has 6 filters I change every six months
In America, all water purveyors are required to issue an annual water quality report.
Also, high levels of natural fluoride are not typical. Added fluoride, usually with hydofluorocylic acid, is an unfortunate thing in many systems though.

We are on a well with amazing water. As a result I'm very sensitive to how municipal tap water tastes. It all just tastes like chemicals to me, and I even take a few gallons of my own water if we go away for a day or two.
There was a study in Finland that stated that tap water in Finland contains less impurities than bottled water. I have never bought bottled water in Finland.
It's great to explain the how and why. Could you also show the data in graphs to show what can happen. Something that most can understand? It took me years to convince my mom about arsenic in her water. That's the gravity of it all. Even arsenic was looked past cuz the township made it seem fine. 90% believe authoritative figures.

I just recently started drinking tap water again. I went about 25 years only drinking bottled water but the cost of bottled water has gone up a lot so I invested in a brita water pitcher/filter and now drink tap water through that. Saving money is always a good thing.

Ok, water worker longer than Huberman has been a Dr, and I agree with one thing, ph/hardness/and alkalinity particularly are very important . It's why water plants like I run spend millions a year to control ph/hardness/all in a very tightly defined and legally regulated range.

During a particular Olympics (I don't recall which year) that was held in the US, German swimmers demands and got, a pool that was purified using no chemicals....only ozone. I believe Rice University has such a pool.

My psoriasis has greatly improved since switching to bottled water. I am not happy about my plastic output but it's also not expensive for me at about 19pence per 2litre bottle, which I think works out top be about £100 - £150 per year. I had my tap water tested randomly by the water company and the tester asked me if I had ever had issues after swimming, which I replied yes, and she said it's probably the chlorine in the water, and that if I lived in the next county north, they get their water from natural springs in the ground.

If you are indeed allergic then you can get a filter for your whole home, or just the shower and sink. I healed my psoriasis by going vegan for a while through a process of elimination, im not a vegan though and dont recommend it as a lifestyle. Also drank nettle and dandelion tea.

The water can essentially come from the same sources but bottled water is treated and their mineral profile is changed, hence waters tasting different from fiji to the sink. This what we’re talking about, even tap water sources can very, my rental has an extremely high mineral count and even leaves calcium build up on the shower, the ice changes the flavor of drinks; it’s horrible.

I would be curious what your thoughts are on plastic leaching into water. I have been aware of the negative affects of tap water for some time, but do you have any insights on using mostly plastic water filters/containers to filter tap water? A talk from Dr. Anthony Jay really freaked me out on the use of plastics in the home. So while I do want to filter water most reasonably priced water filters use lots of plastic. Which is worse, using tap water or taking the risk and filtering it in a mostly plastic container?
After a few years of irregular temperature and pH it would start to leach into the water if you're using the same plastic container, so there isn't a real issue if you replace every few years, but if possible you should use glass containers.
Pick your poison, you want dirty water or you want micro plastics
Get a stainless countertop distiller w/ a VOC filter and remineralize your own water with ionic trace mineral drops. Best way to get pure, clean water with no toxins.
I have Amway's eSpring water filtration system. It has a bunch of appealing features, but it's garbage. It purposely allows fluoride through. I've noticed the bottom of my water kettle was completely white and rough. Only scotch brite can remove it (imagine that fluoride rock around your pineal gland). I bought that filter years ago, looking to avoid plastic water bottles as glass ones are too expensive. Now I had cleaned the kettle about 2 weeks ago and used plastic bottled water since then, my kettle's bottom is completely clean. I don't need to scrub it at all, stainless steel bottom is perfectly shiny. Avoid E-Spring. Its expensive and designed to let fluoride through.
Great data re: magnesium. Its involved in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body and has an obvious and noticeable effect on mood, muscle soreness/pain, qi flow and circulation. An easy workaround if you can't get it in drinking water, and even if you can, to get close to the daily dose needed is to use a transdermal magnesium spray daily or several times a week.
And here I am at the Medditerennian having one of the best tap waters in the world. Just saying because you sound funny to us here 😂

For the guys here in Germany its a bit different. We do have other hygenic and analysis Std. Any bottle water has more inpurities and unwanted trace elements than tapwater. (in some cases Nitrate excluded). Even in the hotest summers hypochlorite addition into the water is not necessary in the most cities.

I’m not sure what to believe but happy to listen to all sides of water filtration debates etc.
One thing I will say is my parents are in their late 70’s always have drank tap water, eaten non organic foods, eat meat blah blah blah and neither have any medical complications this far. That’s all I have on the matter and will still listen to all sides of the arguments with water filtration.

my aunt did same thing drinking tap non organic foods and lots of meat. She made it to 97 sharp as a tack but had open heart surgery in mid seventies. I am convinced with better water food etc , she wluld have livedwell over a hundred hundred!
@@garyssimo Yeah that's what i always think about when people raise this kind of anecdotal evidence, you always have to wonder if they wouldn't have lived longer without x or y factor, i think most humans have the genetic potential to live healthy and strong past a hundred given the right conditions, just have to look at how common those are in some parts of the world, even without ideal conditions cause those don't exist.

You should specify that you are referring to city tap water. I live in rural Michigan and I have very good well water from the well I had drilled when I built my house. Has Cal and Mg in it, tastes very good and no water treatment or fluoride.

For real if you search for fluoride filters there aren't any cheap options, it's either reverse osmosis or a water distiller, or you have to buy gallons of distilled water. Last I checked basic gravity filters don't filter out fluoride, and those are the only cheap options.

The podcast host Dhru Purohit says either you "have" a water filter or "YOU ARE" the water filter. I am on a well and I buy the filtered water from the blue machines in front of grocery stores. It dispenses 5 gallons and it is put through 5 stages of filtering. THEN I put that through my "zero water" brand water filter. I am basically drinking distilled water so I supplement with electrolyte powder.

Get my water from the filtering machines in Publix here in Florida. I add sea salt to re mineralize, put in a red pitcher left out in sun for a day to solar energize (red spectrum vibration and UV disinfects) then pour into a container with quartz crystals. I am now looking into copper containers and how that can increase the water benefits. I will look into the electrolytes you use.

We have a 300ft deep well. Our water is hard. No fluoride. We test it periodically. 2 pre filters coming into the house. Berkey filter for drinking water. Im searching for a natural filter method to ensure its great.
Just to clarify, it is better to drink hard water with higher levels of calcium and magnesium levels, and the main reason we need to filter it is to reduce/remove the fluoride in it? I just got a water analysis from my area, and it said that it has between 0.06-0.33 mg/l of fluoride in the tap water and high levels of calcium and mangnesium. Some quick research says that the healthy fluoride range is around 0.7 mg/l. Would I not need to filter the water in this case?
This was a disappointing presentation. I have not consumed tap water for twenty years mainly due to the local council deciding to fluoridate the water supply. I now have a reverse osmosis unit & found a water vending machine that has seven filtration stages including reverse osmosis for other family members & friends who are concerned about their health.

Reverse os.osis removes all mineral from your water. This is not healthy. Pure water H2O wants to be mineralized, and will soak mineral from your body. I have blood test to prove this.

Me watching this in Lithuania where tap water is batter quality than most bottled waters in US. Ph ~7.8, magnesium content 16mg/l. Total mineral content where I live is ~450mg/l which is double that of average bottled water. 100% of our water comes from deep water wells.

Completely false fairytale sadly. Our tapwater is full of chemical sht and especially pharma drugs that are effective at super small doses.
I have always been a tap water enthusiast drinking 3-5 liters as an athlete, until I switched to bottled glass water and many of my problems simply went away. A brita filter at least does filter some pharma sht out.
German tap water is only tested and purified for some specific things plus you get the chemical desinfectant byproducts that Huberman mentions.

i work for a water treatment plant in new jersey and our operators (people in charge of the disinfection process) wont drink our water, that says something imo. with that being said we dont add fluoride into our water.

Fluoride is good for your teeth. Small amounts of sodium fluoride are often added to drinking water, to improve a population’s dental health. A couple tablespoons of sodium fluoride have also been added to a cup of coffee to kill someone. Concentration matters.
