    Incredibly good stuff, digging your style! One thing I keep telling people is that I would highly recommend learning about the "Golden 40" that leverages the 40Hz capabilities of the Deck's display. Inevitably, you'll often end up worrying if a recent release can run at 60FPS on there. The Golden 40 would massively help here: Due to the fact you can lower the panel's refresh rate to 40Hz through the Quick Action Menu, you are able to go for 40FPS instead of 30. Why you may ask? Despite a 10FPS additional payload to the Deck's graphics APU, 40 FPS is right in the middle between 30 and 60 FPS in terms of frame pacing - meaning a nearly-60 FPS experience. Try it out! If you want to see this in action, feel free to give an older video of mine a shot, where I tried to explain this comprehensively. Bonus tip: 50Hz is amazing for PAL emulation. Keep up the great work!

      Thank you! Much appreciated!
      Heck yeah! I looked into the "Golden 40" while I was working on this video. I think it deserves it's own individual video. I've accidentally played a bunch of games at 40fps without even thinking about the benefits. Lol.

    Valve did the right thing making the Steam Deck so open both when it comes to hardware and software. They made parts and warranty replacements easy. And they have the support of open-source community developers. Years from now I'm sure there will still be hobbyist programmers tinkering with the software on Steam Deck. The situation with the hardware/software is almost the complete opposite with other PC handheld devices on the market.
    This is why I think Steam Deck is going to have staying power, down the line I would not be surprised if we start seeing a lot of third party hardware upgrades to it. Like battery and screen replacements, we already have analog stick upgrades from GuliKit, and Sabrent released a 2TB m2 drive with the Deck in mind.

    • @baldlyrudy
      @baldlyrudy  Год назад +2

      Yup. I have to install the GuliKit Hall sensing sticks from them. Might do that while I'm upgrading the SSD.
      It seems like the Steam Deck is perfect for PC gamers, no matter if you're into tinkering and overclocking or just want something that runs your games on the go.

    What a nice video! I've had my Steam Deck for nearly a week now and, wow. I'm new to PC gaming so this is uncharted territory for me. I've always been a console guy, someone who prefer buying a game without worry of my computer's specs and things of that nature. The Steam Deck presents a little of that but most of the games I'm interested in, luckily, plays just fine. The community is very active so there's always something new to learn. Since owning the Deck I've added Proton, Decky Loader, and several plug-ins from Decky's storefront and it was all thanks to informative videos such as this one! I won't say the Steam Deck will officially turn me into a full fledged PC gamer but it sure as heck opened the door to new gaming possibilities. Oh and I've got to add that I enjoy playing in handheld mode immensely more than I used to. I play my Switch almost exclusively in desktop mode and I thought I'd follow that same habit with the Steam Deck. Nope. So yeah, I'm loving my Steam Deck.

    • @baldlyrudy

      @@baldlyrudy Hello again, Rudy! Decky is really cool and, from what I've learned, installing it is a bit easier than it used to be. If memory serves there was some code that needed to be added into the... what is it called... the programing page found in the Steam Deck. But now that part isn't needed. After adding it I played around with several of the plug ins which really changed the Steam Deck in ways that really made it my own. Things like changing the look of the game page, changing the loading animation, etc. The RUclips community also taught me how to update non steam game art boxes to my games page so no more plain gray boxes for me! Haha!

    • @genefactor007

      @@kandypharm2253 Hi Kay! Yeah it's been really fun. The things I've learned came straight from following the steps shown in various RUclips videos. After getting the Steam Deck in the mail, I pretty much spent a better part of the day adding things I previously researched. I haven't gotten into the whole emulator side of things since there are SO MANY games available on the Steam Deck already. And those random Steam sales are dangerous! Kay, when I bought my Steam Deck I owned one game. I decided to buy Chained Echoes to have something to play on my new shiny device once it arrived. By the end of the following day I added two more games, by the third day five more. I now have ten games on my Steam Deck. Haha! The backlog phenomena is real! 😅
      Oh and a huge congrats on the order!!! If things go for you the way it did for me, you should get your Steam Deck in a few days. I ordered mine on a Monday and it arrived by Thursday of the same week! Very fast turnaround!

    I got mine in Q1. I was in the second week of deliveries. I absolutely love my Deck. However, after 11 months I have started having a few build quality issues. The face buttons and right bumper get stuck. They're also very mushy now and don't spring back consistently. There's also grinding in the left joystick, but that's always been there.
    I'm about to RMA it, so here's hoping they just send me a newer revision. I've been preaching Steam Deck since day 1 and convinced several people to buy one. Hopefully it was just the very early units that have these issues.

    I've been emulating Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Zelda BOTW on my Deck, it performs just like the Switch, sometimes better. I've been playing Spiderman Remastered, Doom Eternal, Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7. As for fighting games, you have to break in the D-Pad, to get some consistency executing motion inputs. I've also been playing The Sims (2000) on it. I'm gonna try playing some classic RTS games on it as well. I was impressed by the level of customisation of Steam OS. Overall, the Steam Deck for me is the most impressive gaming device since the PS4 and the Switch. I'm really happy that I own one!

      There's a video that Digital Foundry did that covers the topic on why 40fps and 40Hz is a great medium. Mainly it's for input latency while also maintaining a steady frame rate.

    • @Zandercode
      @Zandercode Год назад

      Yeah if you can't hit 60fps reliably, it's best to limit the fps, but also important that you turn down the refresh rate to the same value. Just turning down the framerate limit will still give you a lot of stutters and latency. Dropping both to 40Hz and 40fps limit is a great spot.
      I can almost max out most modern games with help from FSR when targeting 40fps.

    The only thing I wish they did was put an OLED on it. Battery life would only be better with a bigger battery which would add size and weight and I personally like the current size and weight. I also don't mind the battery life and if you're playing anything other than a modern AAA you will get 3-4 hours of life, it's only modern games that drop it under 2 hours. For $399 is a total steal and I use it way more than my gaming PC.

Those barely get 90 minutes off the charger playing any games so I really don’t know why anybody would expect the steam deck to have better longevity over a laptop. Setting yourself up for the notion that the steam deck will have terrific battery life playing AAA games at high settings is borderline delusional thinking.
    The steam deck is a compact gaming laptop that you hold in front of your face. That being said its not made of alien technology that completely eliminates the need for being constantly connected to a power source.

    Keep this in mind.
    Nintendo switch version 1 only last for 2 hours of gameplay.
    I dont know why everyone is throwing shade at steam deck which plays for a minimum of 2 hours.
    Its a first gen and play much demanding games.

      That's very true. Valve already said that that the screen and battery are the main focus of their next iteration of the Steam Deck.

      @@baldlyrudy improve screen, battery and address the mushiness issue of the buttona will greatly improve the steam deck experience. They dont need to change the design yet. Should be good for 5 years. switch has been running almost same specs from v1 to oled, i dont know any reason why steam deck is not allowed to milk the same (hope they dont).
      But damn, having an oled screen and removing the bezels will be such a treat.

      Yes and no. From what I can tell putting it on the dock won't increase the output or anything like the Switch. It simply takes the video and outputs it onto a monitor. You would still use the same amount of power as you would in handheld. At least, that's what I can tell from my casual perspective. 😅

    "The battery life is atrocious, there's no getting around that"
    "Well, except by reducing graphical settjngs, limiting frame rate, and turning brightness down, and all these other tools Valve gave so you can choose between battery life and graphics to your desire"
    Everyone complains about the battery life, when the fact is that when you turn the graphics down to about the same as the Switch, you get a similar battery life.
    It''s a handheld, why do you have the expectation that it's gonna last forever with everything turned up? I'm so tired of this outright unreasonable "complaint"

    • @baldlyrudy
      @baldlyrudy  Год назад

      The hope I had was to have something much more powerful than a Switch V2 with similar battery life (3-5 hours). The Switch V1 has 2-3 hours of battery life. After five (almost six) years since launching the Switch, you'd think tech would have advanced enough to deliver better performance on the Steam Deck without the cost of battery life. I'm grateful for Valve giving users the options and tools to squeeze better battery life. That being said, to ignore that out of the box and without adjustments you'll be getting 1-2 hours of battery life would be wrong on my part.

    My true honest opinion: I bought a SD after seeing everyone and their mother praising the device on RUclips, I took the plunge and thought why not? The truth is I have never had so many annoyances with a device period. You name it and I have had an issue with it on SD, Wifi issues? Yup. Powering on and restarting issues? Yup. Transfering issues? Yup. Games not loading after pressing play? Yup. I have had to spend copius amounts of times in forums that are scattered through the internet to try and find fixes for issues I shouldn't have on a device made by a company such as valve. The only true positive I have had in my opinion is the price point and upgradabillity/portabillity.

    • @baldlyrudy
      @baldlyrudy  Год назад

      Yup. In my initial review of the SD, that was something that I mentioned. You're bound to run into hiccups from time to time. It's the nature of the beast, and Valve has said that the device may never be 100% stable.

    • @OHCAM5
      @OHCAM5 Год назад

      @@baldlyrudy The Switch OLED is overpriced for what it is. Driving the price up is not okay. They could have the high end model have that OLED dislpay but not drive affordable one out of most people's ability to buy it. You might be fine with it but a lot of people probably wouldn't. And the price probably wouldn't go up just $50

    • @baldlyrudy
      @baldlyrudy  Год назад

      Driving the price up with the addition of more expensive components makes sense, regardless of how you feel about the Switch. Nintendo treats their hardware the same way Apple does, IMO. And how does adding a higher tier SKU drive people out of buying the affordable one? PC component manufacturers have multiple tiers with different features and performance depending on what you want as a consumer. If you don't want to pay a premium, then don't buy the premium version. The price of the regular Switch has remained the same post OLED launch aside from Europe, AFAIK. So I don't understand where you're coming from.
      I digress. In regards to the Steam Deck, what would be a realistic price increase (if any) for an OLED version?

    • @OHCAM5
      @OHCAM5 Год назад

      @@baldlyrudy Yes but the big driving force behind the Steam Deck is it's affordability. The price is what makes it better than the rest because in every other aspect it is dead last. So driving up the price would not make much sense. That's why I said they could have in the higher tier not all the models.
