    My biggest thing with the Steam Deck are still price, build quality, and support. I keep seeing people say "well well this is newer and more powerful blah blah," yeah, it's going to be like that every single damn year, but it also misses the point of why a HUGE number of people get these games. They don't want to spend Nvidia GPU prices on a nice little portable device and they are more than happy to compromise power for affordability once it's at a very comfortable place, which imo is what the Steam Deck is at. They don't need to run Crysis 4 at 1440p 120 FPS on a handheld, lmao. That's literally why the Switch is so explosively popular, and all the expensive rtaaaaawr more power devices are missing that at their ridiculous 1k+ price points.
    And none of them come anywhere near the support Steam Deck enjoys, and I know that well having long been in the retro and mini pc handheld scene. The SD isn't perfect, of course, but now that Valve knows it's a valid path, I'm positive SD 2 is going to really be a banger with many more options.
    If you have money to spend and are 100% dead set on playing chunky AAA games at high fidelty and FPS on the go instead on a proper console or PC for a better immersive experience, then go ahead and buy a new Aya neo every year. For everyone else just trying to emulate golden oldies, play indies, and juice less demanding stuff or stuff like remasters/remakes (Suikoden 1/2 is coming and Persona 3/4/5 are a dream on the Deck!), the value for what you get is nuts on the Steam Deck.

      And DMC V has been running like a dream at full fat 60 fps.
      I'm looking forward to the next big MonHun game next year and I'm confident it will run decently on deck with RE engine is almost guaranteed running that game.

    I'm kind of hoping Valve decides to follow a more traditional console-cycle with the Steam Deck. So long as it can still maintain decent frames in contemporary games then we're good. I'd like them to focus mainly on increasing Steam OS support so the next generation can ship already able to play big games like Destiny 2

    • @joaoazevedo3939
      @joaoazevedo3939 Год назад

      I’m pretty sure that Destiny 2 is theoretically runnable in this iteration of the Deck already. There is gameplay footage on RUclips. But it’s not runnable out-of-box and not natively supported by the system at all. That is mostly an engine limitation than a Deck one, and maybe they will update the game so it becomes compatible, though I doubt that greatly.

    While I do agree based on what we have available now a performance upgraded version isn't needed, it may have to come sooner than later simply due to the Steam Deck not living in a vacuum and companies like GDM and Ayaneo continually pushing new hardware on a typical PC release schedule and having faster and faster hardware, still atm I don't see the upgrade worth it since while the 6800U is most definitely faster it doesn't really pull a significant amount ahead till it gets to that higher tdp range that's not really ideal for a battery powered handheld, but that may change with the new 7000 series mobile APU's with RDNA 3

  • @arthurdurham
    @arthurdurham Год назад +2

    I think besides for the steam deck, PC gaming is getting more mainstream bc PC ports are better made these days.
    My decision to get a game on my PS5 vs PC (if it's available on both) is no longer a compatibility question but just a preference on where I want to play it or cost.
    But It used to be that often PC ports were made as afterthoughts or that games were made more often with only console or PC in mind.
    But these days developers are actually trying to make PC versions as smooth as console ones and adapting the UIs to the versions instead of solely built for one or the other.
    It's symbiotic, the Steam Deck makes PC gaming more user friendly but it's also bc PC gaming has become more user friendly that the Steam Deck can even exist.

    I missed the email from Steam back in March 2022 to complete my purchase. I decided to wait until they became more available and purchased my Deck at the end of November. I purposely ignored any videos etc during 2022 so when I actually had one most things were a new discovery for me. The Steam Deck is not perfect but for me it is close. I am amazed at just how great this thing is. There is one thing that no one talks about and it is that it does not come with Microsuck Windows installed. It is amazing how the engineers at Valve have gotten so many Windows games running on Linux. In spite of the game devs that only make games for WIndows the Valve engineers for the past 10 years have succeeded at in my opinion made Windows irrelevant. The Stem Deck along with Steam OS 3 that is a customized version of Arch Linux is showing the world that Linux is now a viable alternative to Windows. If you honestly look at Windows you discover that it is the worse malware/Spyware that has ever been created. Since getting my Deck it has shown me that most of my hundreds of games now run great on Linux. It has empowered me to finally to ditch Windows. I now have installed Grauda Linux on all of my PC's. The fact that Steam OS is Linux should be pointed out in any discussion about the Steam Deck. As more and more Decks get out in the wild I predict that it will become a major influence on game development. The biggest thing that could happen is to influence the use of Vulcan instead of Direct X. There is only two things that use Direct X the XBox and Windows PC's both are products of Microsuck. The rest of the world, mobile gaming, MacOS, LinuxOS and Sony's Playstation use Open GL or Vulcan.

    • @AyaWetts
      @AyaWetts Год назад

      Yeah, that would all be nice, but everyone wants to talk about installing Windows and their Stockholm Syndrome... oh well, I'll stick with Linux, no MS for me. Oh and Apple does stupid stuff like MS... macOS does NOT support Vulkan, and its support for OpenGL is old, deprecated, and very problematic. They only actively support their own proprietary Metal API. Best to stick to Linux.

    Disclaimer: I'm going to focus on the 64GB model because it is the lowest price point and it's easier to sell someone on spending $400USD over $650USD.
    The only thing I would call for a hardware revision over is storage, for three reasons:
    1) Amount. 64GBs is pitiful for modern gaming. Sure, there's micro SD cards, sure it works, but that's not a perfect solution long term for reasons I'll touch on further down on the next point. I would say the minimum amount of storage a Steam Deck revision should have is 256GB for the entry level, then 512GBs for the mid tier model, and then 1TB for the top tier.
    2) Speed. While fine for now, eMMC storage is going to be a major problem going forward if, or more like when, Direct Storage becomes a thing. Upgrading to a Zen 3 or Zen 4 APU would allow Valve to utilize PCIe Gen 4 drives more fully.
    3) A bigger form factor drive. While I would prefer a 2280 slot (imagine an 8TB Steam Deck, lol), had Valve gone with at least gone with a 2242 slot finding 2TB drives would've far easier and cheaper. I've found 2242 2TB drives for around $150 bucks on _Newegg._ Which would've been a major weight off my shoulders. I'm not the biggest fan of buying computer hardware on Ebay or Aliexpress, but I do it when I have to. I mean, if you're going to upgrade the battery anyway, might as well change the Deck's chassis a bit to fit a bigger drive, right?
    Otherwise, the Steam Deck is fine. The only other substantive issue with the Steam Deck is software related and that can be fixed through software updates. Battery life is problematic sure, but I kind of expect that with X86 handhelds.

The GPD Win 4 is obviously diverting my attention with its (personally) superior form factor and physical keyboard. But as good as that is, I don't think it can replace the support Valve provides for the Deck/Steam OS. That's the main attraction to me overall. The main caveat to me at the moment is running games that aren't on Steam or older than 2010 (e.g. NFSMW 2005). But other than that, I have nothing I can really complain about so far. It runs most fighting games at a solid 60fps, and I can tweak it as much as I want. I think the only real improvements they can make for the next one outside of general hardware improvements is I/O. I'd like a USB-A port on there somewhere, and an extra USB-C port on the bottom since I think it's more comfortable for playing while charging.

    From my experience during last 2 weeks, the MAIN problem for this machine is that most of its games are made for monitor, and some multi-plat games like those from SONY are made for big TVs, so all these games have really tiny fonts and UIs, so even if you can run these games with low settings plus some FSR trick, the game is such a pain to my eyes.
    Valve said that the games which get a pass is very good to play on the deck in all aspects(fonts, graphic, control...), but I've tried my lib, my answer is not really. Games such as witcher3, monster hunter world, and many many more all have really small fonts, yes you can read them, but if you play game for over an hour or two, it is not very good to have these small fonts.
    The same problem actually happens on the switch, the switch also has a lot of games with small texts, these game are all good on the docked mode, but not optimized for handheld mode.
    And I have a question for quite a long time, why do the game companies made their games with small texts?
    Or at least give me an option to set texts to large, or super large, I myself really need that option in every game!!

    I totally agree with your point of view that making a new Deck model with upgraded hadware is pointless right now, even worse I think it would actually hurt Valve in the long run. I'm so fed up with all those tubers and their 6800u handhelds review, cranking up everything that can be with the device plugged in to make pretty videos and never mentioning they'd get 1hr of battery if they'd remove the cord and then gret praised in the comment section by the same kind of people who crap on the Deck's battery life... I hope AMD will keep improving very low power performances in the future though because as far as I understood it, their upcoming gen of laptops hardware seems to go the opposite way and that would suck if 2 years from now they still have nothing better to show for at 15-20W tops because until we have widespread new battery tech, it's nonsensical to me to go higher in a handheld even if we're able to cool it. Speaking of which the new cooling tech shown at CES is something I'd love to see in the future Deck.

I look at it and I find it's a great piece of hardware, I want to install everything in it and use it all the time, but as a PC gamer first, aka a mouse & keyboard FPS guy, I'm already making an effort to play it with the controller, but for the life of my I just can't agree with the button layout. The sticks, the pads, they're in the wrong place. Even if I fire up some emulation, it doesn't feel right. I'm sincerely hoping the ergonomics of the GPD WIN 4 fix this for me. But with all that negative, I still love it. I've put mine up for sale, could really use the money I would get back, but I'm constantly debating if I should just keep it, install Windows 11 in it, and use it more like a PC. It's a great machine, just with a few flaws that I have to admit, I may just be noticing because there's starting to be some serious competition out there fixing 'em.

    The small minority of people who want a hardware bump are exactly the sort of mentality that keeps PC gaming constrained and unappealing. Consoles generally see the most performance squeezed from the hardware through a long life cycle, while the really OCD PC types just update various modules. Some people don’t have time or money for that, especially when dealing with something like the Deck. Is the Nintendo could get what they got out of the Switch, there’s plenty of years ahead for the Deck, especially with a company like Valve helming this project.

    If you ask me, we're not going to see any upgrades until the Deck is at least 4 years old - and that's me being optimistic.
