Putin's hold on Crimea 'nearly untenable' despite Ukraine's lack of Navy | Ben Hodges

  • “After nine years with every advantage, Russia still controls less than about 17% of Ukraine. They've lost 20% of their navy.”
Russia carrying out a wave of attacks on several cities across Ukraine overnight is “retaliation” for the striking of a warship in the occupied Crimean port, says former commander of U.S. Army forces in Europe, Gen. Ben Hodges.

Funny how Denmark is never mentioned, we were the first along with the Dutch to give F16's to Ukraine
and by population are the largest donator to Ukraine. Quote August 2023: Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said her country would provide 19 jets - “hopefully” six around new year, eight more next year and the remaining five in 2025. “Please take this donation as a token of Denmark’s unwavering support for your country’s fight for freedom,” Frederiksen said.

True, but I will add that Lt. Gen. [ret.] Hodges always made his predictions with a huge caveat, which stated that everything he predicted was based on 'the West' actually providing Ukraine with everything it needs to fight in a NATO-doctrinal manner, and provide it in a timely manner & in sufficient quantities. Unfortunately, in reality,
      (a) most of the equipment/weapons/munitions from 'the West' that Ukraine requested & actually received in 2022/2023 arrived well after they could have made a maximum impact,
      (b) usually when the requested war materials from 'the West' finally arrived, they were provided in inadequate/unsustainable quantities, and
      (c) the U.S.A. & Germany have yet to provide F-16s, the longest-range, most destructive version of ATACMS, and the very long-range & highly-destructive Taurus cruise missiles.
So, despite his polite 'confession', in reality Lt. Gen. [ret.] Hodges did not over-estimate what the Ukrainians could have accomplished. Instead & unfortunately, his caveat turned out to be extremely relevant, and - if anything - Hodges over-estimated the will-power, bravery & motivation of many 'Western' leaders (*) to ensure that Ukraine would WIN the war as quickly as possible.
(*) especially the U.S.A. and Germany.

When people talk about "Putin's hold on Crimea" they fail to take into account the overwhelming choice of the population to return their home territory to Russia. It was Russia before Khrushchev gave it to Ukraine, when Ukraine was a part of the USSR. When the USSR folded, Crimea became independent before Ukraine did. The people of Crimea didn't want to be governed by the rogue US-installed puppet government; and they voted that way. Crimea is Russian, not Ukrainian, no matter how distasteful that truth is to the rogue Ukrainian admin, and the rogue US that put them there.

Britain and France, at the height of their empires in 1854, declared war on Russia and invaded Crimea. They didn't declare war on Kiev, because Ukraine didn't exist as a country back then. They declared war on Moscow, and the Crimean War was one of the very few wars that ended without Britain or France being able to add more land to their empires, so it can hardly be called a successful campaign as British and French historians have always tried to do since those days.
So many American commentators have little real understanding of cultural ties among European and other nations whose histories go back far longer than their own. Vietnam was a classic example of this with a shattering effect on American society. Even Korea, when America accepted conscription for its youth, was an eye-opener once a war-weary China became involved.
To take Crimea off Russia will necessitate America and Britain going to nuclear war with Moscow. It is doubtful if the peoples of mainland Europe, who know what total war really means, will be so keen on the idea. Large-scale demonstrations against the West's Ukraine involvement have already taken place, but news reports have been censored by the western media.

    • @kevinsmarts9953
      @kevinsmarts9953 9 месяцев назад +3

Apart from Britain and France declaring war I don't think you got a single historical fact right.
Kyiv was run by a Governor-General as part of the Russian Empire whose capital was in St Petersburg. Russia did not exist as a country at this time, just like Ukraine it was split into several guberniyas each run separately as part of the larger Empire ruled by the Tsar.
As for the threat of nuclear war to liberate Crimea you have to ask yourself a simple question. If Russia fires its missiles will they all work in the first place, avoid interception and hit their targets? The American and British ones will without question. Maybe Putin gets lucky and hits a couple of cities, kills a few hundred million, but the cost is no one alive in Russia, not a single farmer.

I think the main mistake made by military planners was to prepare Ukraine to achieve NATO style breakthrough without the full NATO kit.
NATO has always known Russia will win an artillery war, that's why we focused on achieving air dominance first, moving into SEAD operations and degrading their ISR/strike capacities. THEN you can start clearing trenches and minefields without attack helicopters making your armor formations go brrrrrrrrr.
The F-16 deliveries will go a long way towards that, not exactly for air dominance but Wild Weasel maneuvers that will at best degrade Russian SAM networks and at worst make the Russians terrified to turn their radars on for fear of a HARM missile going down the chute.
