Hi Joel and Lia, You are correct, no generalities can be made with a country's accents. Here in the USA we too have a wide variety spanning from Maine in upper New England, to New Yorkers, to Georgia, to Louisiana, to Texas, to the midwest states, to Minnesota, to Oregon, and even to California... all are slightly (sometimes much) different but very recognizable. Keep up the good work, very enjoyable and educational, too.. Thanks -- Ken from central Illinois, USA
thank you so much for those explanations about what are the differences between England and the rest of Britain , I have subscribed to your channel this week and I like it a lot , gracias !
Well, what I know is that the UK includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland while the Great Britain only includes England, Scotland and Wales. I learned this from Luke's English Podcast. And also about Cheryl Cole, yeah it's not so easy to understand her because she speaks with a Geordie accent.
Love you guys!💟💟💟💟💟 Now I have a new video assignment for my voice coaching class. Thanks! I know that my students will love it! As always, keep up the great work! Cheers! 😘😘😘😘😘🇬🇧
Joel! No hats, you are a hair do hunk guy. Please, bring back the hair LOL I realize your channel is for vocab and accents, but I would love a fun off shoot of your channel to be "Joel and Lia's Movie Reviews" ...It would be SO fun to get your perspectives on movies. Love your channel
Hi guys! Nice video👌 Well I was wondering whats the most common accent and what is considered as the proper one. For instance lots of people in London or in British tv shows speaks like this" I fink dis fing is a bo'le of wa'ah. My muvah wiv my fuvah r in de 'ouse...etc So I find it difficult to understand and honestly I don't like it at all.. Personally I love your accent. Both of u sound perfect and I enjoy very much to listen to u! Could you give me an update? Thanks cheers👍💗👌
Thank you! Not sure about which accent is the most common as we have SO many different accents here, but the most 'proper' one is called Received Pronunciation (RP). The accent you described is a Cockney accent, but not many people speak with that accent anymore
+Joel & Lia thanks a lot for answering back. The accent I was taught is similar to yours. It is very easy for me to understand you and very pleasant to listen to u both! The only reason I am asking is because I prefer British series & films than American... Sometimes I struggle to understand their language. Easy words, sentences, phrases etc used with the "th" sound as f, v or even d... confuse me very much. In addition to glottal T and H dropping make my life difficult and my favourite shows less enjoyable... Keep on the good work I love listen to your pronunciation! Not only its familiar to me but you sound so elegant and classy as modern English in my opinion should be! Cheers!
I’m American and those really difficult accents I can usually pick up on them extremely fast I think it’s a matter if the frequencies your ear can pick up on
great to see you in the RUclips Space!! Arrr eventually I got clear of the difference of these two terms. My Newcastle friend said I have an English accent typically the Essex one but my other friends said no it's a British accent. I know I should, without a doubt, trust English people cos it's their native language and they know what's right or wrong. But when lots of people say the same thing it throws me! But now, I think I should be able to know the correct one lol.
They know that England and Britain are different things, but even they think that UK and GB are exactly the same thing. To be fair, if a car regd at the Belfast vehicle office goes to France, it should legally have "GB" on the sticker.
I’m Scottish (Glasgow) and if I go anywhere else in the uk I have to repeat myself numerous times for people to understand what I’m saying. Most say it is because of the harshness of the accent and others say it because we talk fast compared to ones from England for example.
I also love Welsh accents. I love a lot of English accents! Love Liverpool, Yorkshire, Newcastle! And yes, I love Scotish maybe because of Sean Connery!
I agree the Scottish accent is the most difficult to understand. There’s also a regional difference between lowland and highland Scottish. I can understand lowland if they speak at a normal rate of speech. But I can not get what a Highlander’s saying without help! I love the sound of a Scottish accent though.
Hello Joel and Lia, have either of you, when speaking to someone with an accent you don't clearly understand, ever pointed it out to the person, and asked them to repeat themselves? Do you think it's rude to do so? Also, you mentioned Tom Jones, I love Tom Jones. He's one of the best singers ever.
Yeah definitely. It always feels awkward to do so, because you feel bad for making them feel like they're not understood. But I don't think it's rude to ask, not if you ask politely.
Definetely, I'll go for the contemporary RP accent or even the estuary one, anyone from the south, all the others sound so weird to me I can't pick up a word. They don't sound English to me. As for the American accents, I'll stick to the Standard one, or even the New England one, namely Bostonian, which is pretty similar to the Standard British one. May I suggest that you do a video on the Bistonian accent, I'd really appreciate it. Cheers guys, and keep it up, bye.
I always liked the Welsh accent the best. It sounds like they're singing when they talk. And in America we hear it the least of all the accents from GB and Ireland.
A distinct difference between a Brìtish person and an English citizen ; in my experience ; is that the British satiate their hunger for humour by micro analysing the person [ probably because there are so many of them trying to impress the rest of us ] ;whereas the English satiate their humourous appetite in their regard of situations.
I know how you feel in America there are so many different accents I live in the south and it is a beautiful accent and we can spot a northerner from a mile away by the way y'all should try doing American accents
I love all your videos, I just thought you should know that Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain. If you take a look at your passport you will see that it says the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland this also means that it is only Northern Ireland as the Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK or Britain. once again I love your videos, I just wanted to let you know.
I don't get your meaning. I know what the Mandela effect is, but if it was a film, then no, I've never heard of it. And if you mean it literally, then I have no idea what your point is.
Mark OldGeezer, I asked because of the American flag in your RUclips avatar, many people remember the red line directly under the blue. If you Google American flag you'll see it is the white line under the blue.
Let's REALLY confuse things about the areas that are in the UK, GB and the British Isles! The Channel Islands and Isle-of-Mann are a bit 'odd' being independent and not in the EU, yet having a 1:1 monetary exchange rate and not needing a British Person to have a passport to visit. Then you have Gibralter, again independent, but, I think, sharing an MEP with some of the South West of England.
I was actually told that the UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland whilst The Great Britain consists of all of the mentioned countries except Northern Ireland. Guess I'm wrong. 😉😂
That was very informative. And to say something you hate: "I love your accents" LOL! Such and American thing to say. I do love many of the different British accents and realize in England alone I am sure there are dozens of regional accents. Likewise, I hope you know that in America (especially since it is so big) there are tons of subtle differences in speech. Sometimes it is not just an accent but it has to do with slang or phraseology...Keep up the good work. Still catching up on all your vids... New Subscriber ----> ME
Here's my take on U.K. accents - English accents are regional, they are simply variations in pronunciation of English words . Scottish, Irish, and Welsh accents are actually influenced by a foreign language, trying to speak English.
I don't really know anything about U. K. accents, but the most unintelligible thing I've ever heard was described in the video as an East Anglian accent. Is that still a thing, or is it from some bygone era?
This is kinda irrelevant but people always think that all of wales speak in a welsh accent but we don’t. Like I’m from north wales and nobody has a welsh accent... we speak really posh compared to the rest of wales. Like barley anyone in north wales even speaks welsh 😂
Using the term "British accent" in no way implies that there is only one accent in Britain. What it refers to is any accent that originated in Britain. It's therefore quite proper to refer to a cockney or Welsh or RP accent as a British accent, because they are all native to Britain. The same logic applies to the designation, "English accent", which just refers to any accent native to England.
The British Isles is England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. The Uk is England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Britain is England, Wales and Scotland. Ireland is Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland aka Republic Of Ireland. I hope this makes a little bit easier 🤷🏼♀️😂
Sorry guys but you made a few mistakes. If your Irish, it can be very insulting to be called British or say Ireland is part of Great Britain. Even saying Ireland is part of the British isles can get you in trouble. Even though the British isles is a geographical term and not a political name, it implies Ireland is still ruled over by Britain. Also within Scotland there are many different accents, and two other languages (Scots and Gaelic). So there is as much variation when you travel from Glasgow to Aberdeen as London to Manchester. Also like England there are posh and working class accents, so it's not all about the location. FYI, your Lorraine is a bit like a Scottish version of Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent.
@@10thdoctor15 Britain (the island of Great Britain) is part of the UK, not the other way around. The whole of Ireland was part of the UK from the early 1800s till 1922 when the south became the Irish free state, and then later the Republic.

hello guys! I have a question then, whats the differences between England, Britain or Great Britain and last, The UK.
England, Wales and Scotland are countries that make up Great Britain, the UK is Britain and Northern Ireland.
