    Your videos are pretty informative. I do have a suggestion. Heat that black goo with a heat gun for a couple seconds and it comes off alot easier. Just had the same thing happen to my 2000 25hp. The goo had gotten smeared into the sensor causing it to idle like crap.

    Compression was 130psi, right? Which value (range) is ok for this outboard?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  2 года назад

      Hey Ricardo. Thanks for tuning in. 130 is fantastic! Although it will run on 90 but not as well. Sometimes lower compression it caused by stuck rings. Especially if it's been sitting for a long time. It's a gamble, but sometimes you can get the rings to loosen up and compression will come back up. If it doesn't your stuck with a low compression powerhead. Like I always say, if it's got good compression the rest is just a pain in the azz! Hahaha Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    Great vid! , Where is the best place to order powerhead gasket kits from for older Evinrude engines? I have a 69 Evinrude 18hp fastwin. But I can't seem to find any gaskets online for it. I know you rebuild a lot of older ones like mine.

      Thanks. Go here and pick your model www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1969&hp=18 .You can buy from them or what I like to do is get the part # and search ebay for Best price, Quickest shipping and Closest location. I watched this video and saw something similar on my motor. I shared that my E25TECOS was missing a little at WOT. Well I checked the cam linkage and everything and took a video and noticed the black ooz that you pointed out on this video. Like you said here this motor was running. So with the coil going bad would it also cause the engine to fall off at WOT? There isn’t that much black goo like on yours, but there is some. Thanks.

    The rope trick is a very common procedure used on 2 cycle handheld equipment like chainsaws and string trimmers.
    With the puller I just put good tension on it and then hit the jack bolt with a 3lb brass hammer and the flywheel will generally releases if not a little more tension and repeat with hammer till it pops.
    I've seen coils on old equipment leak out like this
    Could be the new coils being grabbed by the magnets (different material than the old ones)

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 лет назад

      Yes the rope trick has been around for a long time, but from what I understand Hitting it with a Hammer is a Big No No in the outboard motor world. To each his own I guess. your on track with the magnet thing, but that was with the old coil. Thanks. Stay tuned !

    Hey I have a question for you my friend bought a 1989 25 merury outboard and we can't figure out why the manual rope wouldn't pull out it seems like there is a damn lock that prevents it from being pulled out so we taped it back and the motor fired right up is it called a lever lock and can we just by pass it Thanks BTW great video

      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 лет назад

      Hey . Thanks. Honestly, I'm the wrong guy to ask. I've had three mercury's and dont know that much about them. But there probably is a safety lock on it so it cant be started in gear. Is there a cable or a handle coming off of it leading to the shift mechanism or is it just screwed up and jammed for some reason. You can check here for your model and try and figure it out . www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury-outboard-parts/ thanks again, Stay tuned !

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1

      Hey. Thanks. Your outboard should have an I.D. plate attached to the transom mount, Hopefully its the original mount, there is a model number on the plate, just look it up. If the plate is missing there is a round I.D. plate, about the size of a quarter on the powerhead , if that is missing too, the best thing to do is search pictures and try to match paint color and hood. And I guess you could call it a hobby ! Heres how I got started www.leeroysramblings.com/index.html

    Sun...? I think it was more from being severely overheated by having virtually no impeller in the water pump...? So how hot would it that engine have gotten under the hood with absolutely no cooling...?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 лет назад +1

      It would have destroyed the motor if that were the case. Fortunately it wasn't. It only takes seconds to destroy an impellar running it without water. Black motor, Florida sun = High heat under the hood day after day after day melted out the already aging coil. Once that black material starts to deteriorate that's it. The black paint gets so hot you can't put your hand on it.

    1989 is far to modern for my liking its practically brand new, its funny the more they modernized the design the more expensive it came to servicing and more replacement parts. The groovy 60's and swinging 70's is where its at baby lol.

    I remember you fighting with that other set up....Did you replace the plastic mag plate bushing? If so, did you lube it properly? There must be some wear on the brass mag plate bushing and or crankcase pilot bushing...Did you use the OMC alignment ring? It sounds like you are saying that the flywheel magnets are actually not hitting any of the components, do I have it right? If so, then this is just the flywheel magnets moving the plate up/down/back forth when they pass by the charge coil/alternator windings. This is really not all that uncommon...Not great for sure, but not uncommon. I would replace the plastic bushing 322435, and make sure it is lubed properly. Run your finger nails over the brass mag plate bushing to see if it is worn. The only real fix for this is to replace the mag plate, but that won't help much if the crankcase pilot bushing is worn also...Finally, if the magnets are really not touching any of the components, I would just set the charge coil/alternator windings back in another .005" and just run it....Many are running like this today with no ill effects...

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  5 лет назад

      Hey Stranger. Nice to hear from you. And Yes I figured it out this time. I even mentioned You in the follow up video, and how you told/asked me about the plastic Baring if it was worn. I had no idea they wear out the way they do. And nothing is actually hitting the flywheel. Theres no real wear on the plate, its all in the plastic bushing and the support mount shows some wear. I was just editing the next video and got to part where I was rubbing my fingernail over the brass support and your comment popped up, Hahaha, funny. It looks liked it had worn down almost to a groove but no, it just took off a little of the gold color. I dont want to give away to much here of the next video, hahaha, got to keep the viewers in suspense ! Anyway, I'm just glad I figured it out, Finally ! And as always Thanks. Hope your doing well.
