Whenever I see this band play live, I feel like I can do it too. I'm sure they've learned a lot, including improvisation, but these guys give me the courage to explore the freedom of music and guitars. I guess that's what punk is all about, getting and giving the will to express. Sophisticated but very wild.
they are so complex with tuning its crazy. i tried tuning it to their tunings and it makes no sense and is so unconventional. but when you try its awesome
think it may be tuned in fifths sort of on the 5th - 2nd strings. Like a mandolin. ( D#, D#, A#, D#, G, G ) Two hours of learning and the song makes you seem like you're doing way more than you think!Allows you too!
I'm so glad you feel that way, because so do I. I really appreciate bands like this. I love Wilco, but their sound is so refined that I feel like it's a lofty goal that will take me a long time to reach. I hear Sonic Youth and (sometimes) Spoon, or I listen to some of Television's lyrics and stuff, and I'm like, "Yeah, I could do that now, with what I have."
I listen to just about every music style and have been playing guitar for 20 years and at the end of the day I still have to say Sonic Youth has given me more inspiration and enjoyment than any other band. Their song structures and guitar techniques always give me something to think about. Too bad they broke up.. I loved sitting down with a new SY record and hearing how they would constantly evolve, but never lose their feel.
I agree. I was in high school in the early-mid 90s and never really got into them then ("Bull in the Heather" was the big hit). But now in my late 30s with more of an appreciation for nuance and stuff like that, I got into them, and this album was really the one that I keep going back to.
Thurston = prototype of Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke. later test showed that most people would not believe a man could have so much to offer to music, so they decided to split him into two. therefore, the main vein of Radiohead
i was thinking the same thing, this performance is one of the best ive ever really seen. when thurston breaks down the solo, it s perfectly spectacular. great band, amazing live performance, take care.
But why they don't sing the middle part? You dosed my soul with gasoline You flicked a match into my brain Incinerate The firefighters are so nice I remember you so cold as ice Now flames are licking at yr feet Sirens come to put me out of misery
This is better than the album version... which has always been my problem with Sonic Youth. Sometimes they just can't let a song be great, they have to make it more idiosyncratic to give it that "indie" feeling.
Aah, Sonic YOuth. Glad this track is in GH5, should be fun for vocalists and bassists. Would've preferred Teen Age Riot, but hey, that's what i have RB2 for :).
that's the very reason they have such a big fan base... lots of stupid people think 'i should like this band because it means i know alot about good music'... it's like the emperor's new clothes ... not saying they aren't good just there are alot of people who only like them because of their cult status
@soaddict228 It's Sonic Youth, I don't think they give a shit how old or young they look. I don't think they are proud of how long they have been doing this, I would think they are happy they've been able to get away with it for this long.
Letterman prob had the best taste in music out of any tv talk show host
D Rago not probably he did. Conan is the only one who comes close.
Colbert has some indie gems on from time to time, but definitely agree Dave #1 and Conan as #2.
all about Paul Shaffer - Late Show Music Director
Ed Sullivan lol
yes

i really like how there's no established lead and rhythm guitarist, it's as if they're playing dual-leads, forming like a double helix
Nobody told them how to make music.
Sonic Youth is the coolest band ever.
Definitely
Interpol too
love how this has the 90's sound quality and how thurston looks like hes 12 lmfao
a really tall 12 yo boi
Thurston is rockin the Johnny Ramone hair

I hope they get back together when Thurston and Kim sort things out
+Judson L Skynar except when they tread water!
Radiohead's guitar parts often remind me of Sonic Youth or is it the other way around?
Steve Shelley deserves more acknowledgement for his exceptionnal drumming. He is so tight.
this band is so great =) Gordon never gets old!
She got old
@@selwonkmada agree. Kim’s chords are great but young trim is undefeated. Thurston can attest to that.
Best live version of this song hands down.

@@pitufin67 yes that performance is very nice
I wonder what it's like to hear Sonic Youth for the first time on Letterman. My first time was at the Moore Theater in Seattle. Mind=blown.
Lee, you owe me .50 from Oyster Bay H.S. lunch room. I would rather have the money than another free album. Thank you. Mitch.
Hard to believe Thurston was 48 in this
hair and clothes makes him look 19
Harder to believe Lee is using a Les Paul
@@quiquevazquez7166 Not just any Les Paul its an original Silverburst Custom. Must be late 70s or early to mid 80s. They look so damned cool.
Sonic Youth is like a fine wine Better with Age! This Album Rather Ripped was amazing. I can say the whole album was good every song!
Amen :)
jazzmaster+sonic youth = Musical heaven!
Kim Gordon, Bill Wyman and Jack Bruce made me buy an Eb-3. No regrets.
Rather Ripped is in my opinion one of Sonic Youth's best albums right up there with Daydream Nation, Sister, Goo, and Dirty.

one of my favorite sonic youth songs ever,
Incredible song =)
Thurston = prototype of Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke. later test showed that most people would not believe a man could have so much to offer to music, so they decided to split him into two. therefore, the main vein of Radiohead
i would die for them
In any debate or conversation or battle about greatest song of All-Time, this song could go toe-to-toe with any other song.
Carl! If you're out there buddy, this one reminds me of Western Art Dept. Circa 2008.
Stay up brotha! -Dirty D
yes! steve rocks, he's the unsung hero of SY... great performance, they remain amazing
Probably my favorite song from SY, so accessible and so unique.
David Michael Letterman

Beautiful...
probably the best song about sexual frustration ever.
now that's a band that can still rock and put quality work after so many years around
I love this song!!!
their name goes well with their image, it looks like none of them aged (especially thurston), and they don't act old on stage
thurst is the prettiest man EVER
i was thinking the same thing, this performance is one of the best ive ever really seen. when thurston breaks down the solo, it s perfectly spectacular. great band, amazing live performance, take care.
el momento mas intenso alrededor de la mitad del video, lo maximo !
Sonic Youth has been on Letterman like 5 times
daaaaaamn i really want a jazzmaster guitar, that sweet tone.
Que prolijidad!!!!! Exellente!!!
JOHNNY RAMONE PLAYING A JAZZMASTER
But why they don't sing the middle part?
You dosed my soul with gasoline
You flicked a match into my brain
Incinerate
The firefighters are so nice
I remember you so cold as ice
Now flames are licking at yr feet
Sirens come to put me out of misery
probs short on time
@@PartyLikeRobots yeah, this is clearly a shortened version for tv. So they left stuff out.
they usually shortened their songs slightly when playing “live” tv shows like this, Sunday was shortened also
it's such a beautiful song
just amazing music from an unique and nice band
ahuevo pinche rola bien vergas!!!
Wow - they're still SO GOOD!
great tune! one of there best
It's a real old jazzmaster, from 1964, I believe. Not a reissue.
Sonic Youth é mara!!!
This is better than the album version... which has always been my problem with Sonic Youth. Sometimes they just can't let a song be great, they have to make it more idiosyncratic to give it that "indie" feeling.
this is all I need tonight
my favourite...
awsome
Thurston Moore is 50 years old...he looks 25 here
@darkshiningstar3 Thurston? LEE will never get old!
You doused my soul with gasoline
You flicked a match into my brain

I've never seen Lee play such an expensive guitar
Letterman even somehow got “The Strokes” to play at Ball State in Muncie, Indiana
@maydecember513 SONIC "YOUTH" will never get old!
I'm going to tell my kids that this is Linus & Lucy.
Classic song
This could go on for hours.
I think I like you.
is there anything better than a jazzmaster?
Sounds like early roxy musc with a touch of blur
luv this FUKEN SONG!
just cos she's 56 doesnt mean she's bad tho
i mean...i know the bassist from my bloody valentine
and she's still awesome
The singer looks like he's gotten younger over the years.
Super!
sonic youth has been together since 1980... i'm surprised you hadn't heard of them either haha.
siiiiigh..
fortunately Sonic Youth's style will never change (-;
GReeeeeeeeeeat
love this song(L)
SOniC Youth Go!
damn thurston will never get old
Sensational
they're young forever.
hey and the music, it's painting with sounds, i like painters and anarchists:-) always be yourself and create
sucks how they cut the song short for tv.. ah well
god to see this
yeah man, they should totally have a tour together!
You got that right!

sweet vid man!!!!!!!
What guitar amps are the guys using? I love the sprawling music the band released in the mid-late 90s, but Rather Ripped is such a great Rock album.
I'm pretty sure Thurston used a Princeton Reverb on Rather Ripped. Old Sonic Youth stuff was done on Marshall stacks for the most part.
Sweet mother of jesus!!!!!
@johnw840 you are right men
I don't about you guys out there, but I always got the lead singer confused with Beck??
that's the very reason they have such a big fan base... lots of stupid people think 'i should like this band because it means i know alot about good music'... it's like the emperor's new clothes ... not saying they aren't good just there are alot of people who only like them because of their cult status

Thruston reminds me of ron wealsey out of harry potter for some reason. lmao
sonic youth
damn i love that "solo" so much!
I do see how geeky that sounds and i couldn't give two shits.
@simmad0wnn0w Yeah, and his gonna be starring in the next twilight movie...
Do you think Thurston Moore ever watched the show "Peter and Pete" and thought that he looked just like Pete?
Sonic Youth - quintisential NYC
I can't believe Thurston it's almost my mom's age. He looks so young..
that was a rather ripping performance, souded super good
Can you be cooler than kim gordon?absolutely not
