“Is the pleasure of the ANTICIPATION greater than the pleasure of ACQUISITION ?”
It’s a phrase I read on a newsletter from RUclipsr Ali Abdaal and it kinda stuck with me…
As I look back through my collection.
I wonder. Am I more addicted to the actual ordering process and receiving something more than owning the thing ?
Let me know what you think in the comments ?
Is all of your collection for things that bring you joy or was it the joy of ordering and anticipating that drew you to place the order ?
    Let’s discuss.

I can relate to this video. Last year I went a bit nuts with buying blue rays. Most of which were blind buys. The excitement of waiting for them to arrive was immense. But when I received them they would get a quick look over and then get put on the shelf. This year I have decided to apply the breaks and actually take the time to watch what I purchased. I have been watching at least one movie a week (sometimes two) and checking out the extras as well. And it's a rewarding experience and makes me actually appreciate what I bought instead of chasing the purchasing high.

      👆🏼👆🏼 exactly this.
This is what I want to get back to. I’m applying the brakes and having a clear out of those titles which accumulated in the hope that my collection can be those movies that I get value from. Be it the extras or the repeat viewing.
Those habits and that addiction to ordering have led to losing a bit of magic of receiving titles that I really care about.

@@PhillwithadoubleL I agree! It takes the magic away just a little bit. Since I've started watching the movies I've bought I have begun to get that magic back. And I enjoy the sense of excitement I'm getting from watching my blind buys and knowing next to nothing about them! And if I end up not getting on with the movie I can feel ok about letting it go. Without having that horrible feeling of anxiety about getting rid of it!

I watch a lot of collectors too. I think it’s what started me on this path… but for me. Thinking about collections and seeing others and how they collect made me think another way.
It fascinates me too. Particularly when it becomes that habit or addiction when you can see things accumulating beyond your particular interests for the smallest of reasons.
A lot of the traits of collecting like this actually line in to recognised addiction behaviours but it isn’t recognised in the same way.

I think this rings true for many people now. I remember when I was a kid in the 80’s, I’d see a film at the cinema and wait 6 months to rent it. Then when the sell through market too off, the films I bought were films I’d seen and loved. Now most purchases are blind buys and £10-£15 a time for a blind buy is pretty crazy when you think about it. The limited edition blind buys at £25 upwards is just bizarre. I think your idea of renting a movie first for a couple of quid is a good idea. All new releases can be rented and if you like it, fine, if not you will be £3 out of pocket rather than £15 and then stuck with a film you will never revisit again.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  7 месяцев назад +3

I’ve done the blind buying so many times over the years. It’s starting to feel a little much keeping on top of it all at times.
We used to rent so often in the past and that kind of thing has pretty much disappeared from a lot of collectors mindsets.
It’s something I need to do more regular.
Similarly not getting dragged into buying the limited edition of something because it’s limited when I’m not even sure what the film is at times. Why not get the basic edition first (and a lot cheaper) or rent it to seen if it’s something I should be spending £25 - £40 on.

Your videos on physical media collecting had coincided with my own recent thoughts about the subject. Maybe it’s a generation thing? Going back to the past when there was no VHS tapes. The only way to see a film was to review the radio times listings for a movie and then making an appointment to see it as a live broadcast. Seeing Star Wars at the cinema as a child and waiting years and years to see it again on t.v. Then years later to own it on V.H.S, finally getting the entertainment fix we craved, of watching your favourite movie whenever you desire. Collecting titles on V.H.S and watching them at your leisure was truly liberating. Never again would I have to stay up late on a school night to watch a horror movie or action film and be tired the next day. Never again would I have to wait another year for a repeat T.V showing of Jaws.
Then came DVD with superior quality and tons of new features. My collecting went into overdrive as I could import horror movies that were forbidden in the U.K. I felt a smugness that I had titles like Evil Dead in my collection.
This entertainment access deprived childhood may have programmed a generation to collect titles for the simple reason of being in total control of their viewing pleasure. Something a younger me could only dream about.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  7 месяцев назад

I was exactly the same with the imports. Texas chainsaw / clockwork orange. Those possibilities were endless. And as you say, having them for whenever I wanted was a dream.
It’s interesting seeing my kids complete lack of interest in the physical formats because so much is at their fingertips.
Going through doing these videos and considering the collection is making me really think about what I’ve been doing over the years. I’m starting to appreciate the space from clearing out and also the clarity.
Buying less has meant I’ve actually had more time to fully appreciate if I do pick something up. Something that from the bulk ordering in the past I’ve kinda missed out on.

I love physical media but, aside from something super specific or rare, I'm at a point where I will only buy things I come across randomly at thrift stores, usually for $2 or less. I have a big problem with the concept of buying physical copies of movies I've not seen. In the past couple of years I've bought "Streets of Fire" and "The Last Dragon" on DVD because people kept assuring me they were cult classics. They worked out, as did my purchase on Blu-Ray of "Color Out of Space" and "Crimes of the Future" although they were much-anticipated works by directors I felt comfortable buying their work sight unseen. I also picked up a copy of "A Star is Born" on DVD after all the critical acclaim and I believe that only cost me £2.99 or something, but when I watched that with my wife as a treat we'd stored up for a while we were both quite disappointed. That disappointment always sticks in my mind more than loving Willem Dafoe in bonkers leather waders in Streets of Fire or Nicolas Cage going absolutely mental (as per usual) in Color Out of Space. It's a weird reaction, but one I am grateful for as it stays my hand from buying all manner of stuff I may not need or enjoy.

I’ve had shudder before, I’ve found there service ok but they’re a little thin on the ground in terms of quality content. I think a month each year would be enough to burn through what you wanted.
I’ve seen the first In Search of Darkness and half of the 2nd so far. Not gone in for the third one yet (I’m falling behind).
The Eli Roth History of Horror was worth a look too (I’ve only seen the first seasons so far).

That’s what I need to adjust my collecting around. Making sure I’m only buying the titles I 100% want to watch again. So many times a purchase has been based purely on nostalgia for the title more than my want of watching again… and then, because it’s limited obviously I HAVE to have it 🙄

Some days I think I’d happily get rid and then other I want to keep it and collect for it again. I see this more in my board game groups. They seem always after the new kickstarter or game. I have left 99% of the board game fb groups/you tube so as not to be tempted. I have a good collection now of games I am happy with and always wanna play so I try to remove that temptation. Films as long as I have a copy of a film I love I am happy, I don't need it to be blu ray or 4k or special ed. I simply want to be able to watch it when I want to! Now when I am out thrifting if I see an upgraded version and it is something I super love and it is very cheap.... ya . I recently got district 9 blu ray for 3.00 okay ya. Starship troopers blu ray at a thrift store for 5.00 okay yes please. I also got the evildead box set brand new 1,2, and all of the show for 47.00 yes way too good to pass up as online it is like 124.00. I also only order online for things I doubt i can find second hand.

I miss being able the thrift like that. The addiction to ordering and collecting these things have made it impossible to find anything new (to me) in the wild.
It’s something I miss doing with friends. I’m slowing way down on the habits of ordering in the hope of reclaiming some of the joy of making those kinds of discoveries for things that I really want over just having them to fill the gap.

I do buy blind every so often, this past Monday I bought used at a pawn shop Green Book which I had only seen clip on instagram, so I picked it up for $2 dollars. Watched it last night and definitely is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while, I went downstairs and my wife had came home from work, so I told her about the movie and she wanted to watch it, so I watched it again 😂😂. That much I liked that blind buy. Blind buying is a bet, you never know if you are going to like it or not.

Bargain. I think it’s great of you can discover something like that in a Pawn Shop. It’s the risk that you take with a blind buy but nice when it’s paid off and you haven’t risked it with a full priced pre order.
I’ve not actually seen Green Book yet. Sounds like I need to put it on my watchlist.
Will you be keeping it in your collection ?
