I like to think Korg put Universe as Patch 0 as a deliberate flex. Imagine getting this keyboard when it first came out in 1988, plugging it in and turning it on for the first time, and that's the first sound you're greeted with.

I did and it was amazing, like when I saw Star Wars back in 1977. Never heard a preset like it and I was sold immediately! Ended up selling it in favour of the Triton and now everyone wants an M1….held on to all my instruments since then.

That's what happened to me. Went to the shop in '89, played the M1, comparing it to some Roland synth (D20, I think), going back to the M1, playing some more… and at the end of the afternoon there really was no comparison with the Roland, and I ended up paying serious money (being a student back then) for a synth that's still in this house to this day. It was not just the "00 Universe" like sounds (although they did indeed help sell the synth), but also the sax, the organ, the different drum kits… Scrolling through the presets was a continuous feel of "does this machine ever *stop* or can it really do everything?" Of course compared to modern day synths it's pretty limited, but back then it was a box full of never-heard-before magic.

Of all the synthesizers, the Korg M1 is one of my favorites. Its contribution to House Music throughout the 1990s is impressive. I've never heard the presets like this, individually. Someone said in the comments that they're sounds that remind us of our childhood, and it's true. In almost every preset as you played, I could recognize a House track. The saddest thing for me is that a friend has an M1 and wants to sell it, but at the moment I don't have the money to buy it. Anyway, thank you for doing this video, amazing job. Greetings from Brazil.

Shame some key instruments don't sound real enough- like acoustic and electric pianos and organs.

@@copperstaterocketguy1640 There is a huge difference between a hardware M1 and the software one.... 16 voices versus 256, 100 programs versus unlimited, isn't much of a comparison... It took years for the M1 to turn into the workstation it was advertised as. The hardware version was never really a workstation by anyone's standard other than Korg's. Thanks for this great video, Claudio.
Sometimes you just forget what good things you have standing behind the door.
What an amazing synth😎! OK, not all presets, perhaps 🤫

"Hi, the snare in *Man in the Mirror* by Michael Jackson is an EPROM from the LinnDrum LM2, which could be purchased separately. The specific name of that EPROM is Snare 23. I have that sound, and I've also used it in some of my productions :)".

Joe Zawinul used the M1 extensively on his Syndicate recordings and live gigs toward the end of his career.
My Nautilus has most of those M1 patches in some variation or other. Korg is the king for pads and combis. I've had many synths, and my rig has never been without a Korg or three!

Familiar sounds. One of the common keyboards in churches back in the 90s

13:16 Man In The Mirror yes, but more so "Leave Me Alone". There's a hard hitting loud snare drum every half note after the intro, constantly through the whole tune. It's about Michael's constant media attention which I imagine is just a drilling to him as the snare is to the listener. To be fair, a fair bit of the Bad album has hard hitting snares apart from a few.

Still have mine since 1990, still working. In 2018 I bought the WaveRex writeable flash PCM sample card for my M1 and loaded TR909 drumkit onto it from my PC via USB. Then plugged it in the PCM card slot in the back. In 2023 I bought the m1ram batteryless MC-02 flash program/combi/sequence storage card, which loads in the top of the M1. No affiliation, incentive or referral benefit to me for mentioning these, I paid in full for both. I would suppose it might not be too surprising that these new accessories are developed for the M1, being the best selling synthesizer.
What I'd like to see Korg do is release their virtual Korg M1 software (which I also own) for the Raspberry Pi compute module, with a hardware interface kit for fitting inside the original M1, interfacing to the display, the memory cards, keyboard, MIDI, audio etc. This would keep the M1 legend alive should the original hardware fail. Korg have released synthesizers using the Raspberry Pi so I could see the intersection of this pioneering work with the legendary M1 being a wonderful opportunity. With WiFi, many large sample sets could be uploaded to the compute module storage without the need for external mods to the case.
