R.I.P. Vangelis. Self taught. Not classically trained. Never bothered learning musical notation. It was all from the heart and spirit. Such a wonderous and talented man. Your music will live for as long as people have ears to listen and emotions to move.

Nice recreation guys! As far as I can tell, the horn sound Vangelis uses is actually just 2 sawtooth oscs nearly in tune, but not quite so you get a slow phasey effet. The Muse ca do that as well, and actually sounds close to the CS 80. Of course you also need a slight filter envelope, where it opens kind slowly. You can also essign some aftertouch to the filter cutoff for extra expression :)
Also I think you could add some VP330 strings to fill up the air (or similar, thr Muse can do an approximation too, but you need a bucket brigate chorus).

You could have used the Prophet 6 and the onboard sequencer it has to do the bass line. It's easy to recreate. The original was done on a Prophet 10 with onboard poly sequencer. The strings are VP 330. The percussion and incidental sounds are done with the Emulator. I believe a Linn LM1 or Roland TR-808 is handling the "White noise" type percussion (using a Shaker/Cabasa sound). The swelling brass is of course the CS-80.
The best way to reproduce this using modern gear (in my opinion anyway is:
Arturia PolyBrute 12 for the brass.
Prophet 6 or Take 5 for the sequenced bass line.
Prophet X or really any hardware sampler (1010Music Tangerine, Roland P6, Sonicware LoFi-12, or even some Akai instrument) for the sample based material.
Behringer VC340 for the string machine sound.
Arturia DrumBrute or Analog Rytm MKII for the percussion sound.

Vangelis was a genius that produced new music everyday. He set up his home studio so that he could select any sound he wanted quickly. Thus the constant switching from left brain to right brain thought processes that most of us go through when switching from creative work to mechanical work (e.g. how much verb on this instrument or how much compression on that instrument) was minimised by Vangelis. He managed to create a synthesis between music and pure sound. I'm not sure if he was a pioneer in this but I've certainly read this about him.

Vangelis mainstreamed "what you see what you record" thing. He was not the first. Ennio Morricone was the first But he perfected it. All his keyboards and other instruments were always on and recording. While a first cut (with no music) of a movie was playing on his movie projector he moved around and played to the visuals on the screen. He is also known to use presets with minor tweaks.
