They should just make it to where the person who wears the special belt only wears that belt and takes off their normal belt just for that match.

Maybe for bigger competitions, IBJJF should do like the bigger judo competitions and mandate one athlete always wear white gi, and the other athlete has option to wear colored gi (blue or black). will make things a lot easier to watch. In smaller competitions, this separate green-yellow belt should come out and athletes can wear whatever color gi they have. It's the same in judo competitions where at bigger events like nationals, and international level its always one player wears white judogi, the other player wears blue judogi, but at local level, most players are wearing white judogi so a different colored belt (red or blue) is used to differentiate the two athletes. Sometimes both players forgo their actual rank belts and one wears blue belt and the other wears white belt. In Japan, most competitors wear white judogi strictly, and so old tradition is for one to wear a red sash on top of their regular belt - this is not a full on belt, but a soft sash. Anyways, you get the idea :)

Ah nice, sounds like judo has it figured out, lol. Actually in IBJJF at major comps (Worlds, Euros etc.) in black belt finals, they make the athletes wear different colored gis (white and blue). But that’s just for black belts…

@@joshbeambjj Hey, I didn't know about IBJJF requiring black belts to wear white and blue gi for the different athletes. Perhaps it's a new thing, because I don't remember seeing this in earlier Worlds and PanAms, which just shows I need to catch up watching more recent IBJJF events :)

@sonamatuk Hey! Idk if it’s necessarily white and blue (I think it is?) but yeah I’ve done quite a few IBJJFs throughout 2022/2023/2024 and I can’t remember if it’s in the email they send or where it is, but they mention wearing two different color gis to distinguish the black belt athletes in at least the finals of certain majors (also if you look back at like any Worlds black belt finals at least over the last few years on RUclips, it’s blue and white gis)

@sonamatuk ah ok found it in the rulebook, section 8.1.5: “in the adult black belt divisions…. The event’s organizers may demand that athletes have two gis of different colors (one royal blue and the other white), in order to distinguish the two athletes in a match.”

@@joshbeambjj Awesome! Thanks for delving deeper into this. Learned something new, and I think it's a good rule. IBJJF should just make it mandatory. After all, the number of uniforms most BJJ athletes have, they (we) might as well just get the proper colors for IBJJF competitions and be done with it :)
