The Most CREATIVE IRRIGATION System in the World - Levadas of Madeira

- The Levadas are a system of channels or aqueducts of many kilometres in length, mostly bordering mountains but also going through them, with several stretches over rugged rocks, to bring water from different sources to its intermediate or final uses.
Today, the ‘Levadas da Madeira’ constitute an exceptional multi-functional enterprise, transporting water for human consumption, agricultural purposes and the production of electrical energy. They are also paths for discovery and contact with nature and the agricultural landscape, becoming an “ex libris” of the region.
According to the chronicles of the time, the first levadas were rudimentary waterways, short and dug out in the volcanic tufts. When the rock was so hard that the levada frame could not be dug, segments built out of wood from endemic species such as Madeira laurel or Canary laurel would be used in the shape of a gutter.
With the ongoing expansion of farming operations, first with the cultivation of sugar cane, then later with winegrowing, and nowadays with the cultivation of bananas, the levadas network kept growing all over the island and its construction demanded more advanced techniques.

Bravo, very interesting. Madeira is incredibly interesting, I went in 2023 and I will come again in December for Christmas.
Thank you Angela :))
Madeira in December is beautiful you’ll love it!! 🤠
Incredible story. Thanks for making this video.
You’re welcome 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Hit the Road team. This was my favourite video so far. Learnt a lot and you reminded my why I live on the beautiful island with an amazing natural and cultural heritage.
Thank you very much Ali! I hope you’re well my brother, big hug
Great video Jeff . The Levadas never fail to amaze me . I keep asking myself “ how did they get the materials up here , how were the levadas surveyed even . I was impressed to hear how important Hydro power is to the island , close to 45% . Well done Madeira .
The statute I have always found creepy though . But if it’s there. To represent the suffering of the previous generations and the sacrifices made to build this beautiful island , well fair enough . Now it’ll make me sad all the souls lost .
That’s life hey Gerry, it’s sad to know the suffering that was and is in the world. Thank you for the kind words and I can only hope I can bring you more value in the videos to come 🙏 happy Sunday !! 🤠
A really informative vlog Jeff, thank you.
Glad you liked it 🙏
Thank you!!
We walked the Levada from the shopping centre up the hill from the Angel and left it with the Angel in sight further down then walked down to our Pink hotel (you know the one 😉), another informative vlog, really enjoyed it.
Love that levada 🙏 haven’t done it enough times to be honest. Thank you and have a great week !! 🤠
Great video! Levada's are one of the many gems that make Madeira a place like no other. There's a recent book on the levada's written by Marco Livramento available in English and Portuguese at the Diário shop in Funchal.
Yes I would love to read the book! I’ve hiked with Marco and he is an absolute pro when it comes to Levadas 🏆
Thanx for the kind words Chris, have a great Sunday 🤠
Me and my boyfriend watching from brazil and sweden! Love your channel! Great views, madeira is so beautiful, much love
Thank you very much 🙏 glad you enjoy it :)) bom domingo!! 🤠
Thanks Jeff & André
Even if you had to improvise & make things up as you go along you still do a great job & make it entertaining!
Surely Elisa has gotten her promotion from princess to queen at this stage & what was the deal by the way?!
Also was that the same levada just next to where you picked us up in Funchal last April?
Have an amazing weekend my friend 🤗
Hey Rue!
Eheh Elisa got herself a new item, girl things ;) or Queen things maybe ;))
Yes, that levada was the one closeby to where you were, it’s a great walk 🤠
Looking forward to seeing you!
Happy Sunday 🤠
Thanks. Wish to visit Madeira in late October, early November, Your videos are realy helpful.. May be see You then. All the best!
I hope so my friend 🙏 thank you and see you soon!
Hey Jeff what a coinidence, I saw one of your Hit The Road vehicles for the first time today driving along Madelena do mar, reminded me of one of those classic safari jeeps that you'd see in old movies set in Australia or Africa or somewhere, cool looking vehicle anyway, more tasteful IMO than what I've seen from the other tour companies that Ive seen driving around the island.
Thank you very much 🙏 that was in fact me that day, on a tour :)) yeah the colour is based off the CAMEL TROPHY expeditions all over the world by Land Rover plus I thought it looked more African like myself 😂 anyway thanx for the kind words and enjoy Madeira !! Bom domingo 🤠
Excelente como sempre.
Só por curiosidade:
Uma URZE pode reter até 30L de água por dia.
Grande abraço.
Incrível não é ❤️
Muito obrigado Duarte 🙏 grande abraço!!
