  • Walked into the bathroom and found a puddle on the floor. Sadly we could not blame dog for this one. Ryan recalled seeing the sewer vent pipe being bent down and we assumed this was connected. After climbing up on the roof the problem was very clear. We vented the sewer out the side wall to eliminate this issue and put a temporary patch on the roof.

Good job man, you fixed it using the same material. Most folks just put some tape and calk down.

Patch is still there; we did intend to replace that sheet of metal at some point but temporary can become permanent so quickly lol

Well hey man it worked and looks like it'll keep the rain out! I watched your video to brush up a lil bit before I repaired a couple of spots on a metal roof. It's nice to see folks who actually repair the damaged area with the same material instead of just patching it with tape. Thanks again for the post!

Nice job! I see you are well prepared if any bears try to get ya while you're on the roof. Caulk guns only have so much use lol

Clean, fast repair - that's how it looked like to me. The questions remain, of course 🙂. 1. Did the repair remain leak-free for the rest of the winter? 2. Did you get around to making the full repair later in the year. Thanks for the video.

The repair did hold and still is. We did put the upturn on the vent pipe but the patch is holding strong so no real need to change anything there, it should last a long time. Unfortunately this year the ice ripped the chimney that you can see in this video right off the roof, now that was a BIG hole! Fortunately for that one there was a break in the roofing just above it so our neighbor who was watching our house was able to slide a new sheet of roofing under the upper part to complete the repair. The ice sure is rough on roof protrusions!

@@aroundthehomesteadwithsuer3497 Wow - that is a continuing challenge! And yes, how do you get around the fact that any obtrusion - it seems - causes the ice to build up, and then the weight eventually causes a break? Does every projecting part need to be aerodynamic (or Iceo-dynamic) so that the ice just slides right over it, or around it, without having anything substantial to cling to and, sooner or later, rip it off? You could, perhaps, put a V-shaped sheetmetal dam above each opening, so that it works like a static snow-plow, and redirects the snow away from the protrusion. All the best with it, and thanks for the reply.

Was the patch piece steel or aluminum? And what gauge?
