Thanks for doing this tests. Its no denying that what we saw here is a 20-30 year old stereo amp take the fight to a set of brand new monos and came out standing tall. It shows just how good this Gryphon amp is.
Thank you Jay, for this shout out - and for the description of the different sound characters - it really helped me choose the new addition to my system
Great shootout, Jay. The production value of this one was right up there. The flipping backwards and forwards really illustrated the differences in the amplifiers as little as there were. If there had been a 5 second or longer gap between each presentation, you would lose the ability to pick up the very minor differences here.
Jay, I'm surprised as much as you are, I too liked presentation 2 better for which I thought was the Gryphon. It had more depth, bass and more of a down to earth tube sound. I would have never known this if it was not for your channel! Great job...
Jay described Pass well. One of the reasons why the brand does so well is the non-fatiguing, tube-like warmth. When you spend tens of thousands on electronics gear, being able to live with that gear for years, playing all sorts of music, is vital. You never get those skreetchy, etched highs from Pass.
Very interesting, thank you very much for the hard work you put in! Hoping to see som TAD gear in your lab in the future - based on your impressions earlier.
Here is a wild card; please don’t laugh but I read German Stereoplay and in their monthly Rang und Namen they ranked the Michi M8 Monoblock Amplifier very highly; I believe they weigh 130 lbs., each! Retail is 15K for both; perhaps insert them as an example of how much can be had in “affordable” amplification & point out what we are NOT getting.
Jay, Wilson Audio uses Spectral electronics in its loudspeaker development work and evaluation. Will we see Spectral system together with its dedicated MIT cables on your channel?
Jay -- Thank you for this shoot-out. I love your channel. Since the XA-160.8 is out of my budget, I'm curious how much the XA-60.8s capture the sound qualities of their more expensive sibling. Is it possible to say whether the XA-60.8s capture the same overall quality but with less power?
I suspect they have a similar signature. He voices all his amps with the same crew of listeners all using the same speakers. Steve Gutenberg aka Audiophiliac did an interesting 3 part interview where he describes the process. He is a thoughtful, cool, down to earth and brilliant designer.
Results were exactly as I thought. I would say that the result in demo #2 was primarily due to the tracks you selected. As I had commented in demo #1 the tracks had a lot of artificial reverb emphasizing the appearance of being more 3d holographic (which personally I don't like much, as it can never be reproduced in a live performance). Jay I encourage you to do a blind shootout between a world class tube pre-amp and Solid state linestage both feeding your boulders. I will predict that most of your followers will prefer the tube preamp in synergy with the world leading class A boulder solid state monos. This combination, when done in synergy with dac and cables delivers the best of both camps ( musicality and holographic soundstage of tubes, and the micro details, fast transients, dynamic fast bass control of solid state). Thanks for your excellent work Jay.
I did the test between my Luxman c900u and an Ares Cerat Incito S. To 3 sets or very different ears the Luxman was preferred. In fact one said the AC lacked the soul that so many speak of. She called it boring. I however still want to find a great sounding tube pre that I can alternate into my system for some change of pace. I've tried 5 and more will follow. None yet have been as good and different enough to consider. It always comes down to synergy. Thanks for the massive amount of work you are doing Jay. Fun to see. Enjoy the music all. 🎶🙂🎶
I listened six times presentation no 2 pass 160.8 had better hologram and definition and better price I was expecting that despite audition through you tube is not for the most exact inference.

In the room, Amplifier A might sound better than Amplifier B....... But with the microphones, video compression, signal degradation, the sound of the users' computer rigs/gear, etc., Amplifier B might "synergize" with the recorded audio better than Amplifier A..... I think there should also be some feedback from listeners actually in the listening space..... You'd be golden if the video responses agree with the responses from those actually in the room. (You may have already done this, but you might want to "match" the sound of the video to the sound you hear in the listening space.) For this reason, I personally cannot judge the sound of a system via a recording of the system alone..... Even though it otherwise sounds very impressive! 😃
What is the purpose of this test of running a seemingly metal pen on heat-sinks and amplifier covers and comparing sound signatures? Are both of these amplifiers Class A? Perhaps the composition of the chassis, the heatsinks, amp cover, etc. should be revealed so investigation can be done to determine if your "pen-test" is valid as far as the component's sound signatures are concerned. Never heard of microphonics concerns with solid state power amps.
A better comparison would have been a set of Pass Labs X600.8 Mono amplifiers. The Gryphons are not Class A amplifiers. I have several had Gryphons come through my shop. I never felt the need to keep a Gryphons around.

@@davidcross890 tubes (unlike what manufacturers of solid state gear would like you to believe) actually distort less where it matters most: right when the signal starts. There's no recommendations. You do that on your own
