The only thing more fun than the existence of the Raptors is the immediate recognition and selection by Guilliman as soon as he kicks off Indomitus.
"Oh, cool, normal Astartes who do normal things! Bring the chapter master here, I need to speak with him in person."
Guilliman: "Finally, someone with an ounce of sense! I was afraid I was the only sane man in this Imperium. I'll take your entire stock, thank you."
"Holy crap people that actually understand what my book is about"
Guilliman, speaking to the Raptors Chapter Master: How many of you can you make?
@@e-san6111
“I want to build a new legion, do you understand me? I want a legion of Raptors!”
What book doe this happen in?
I love the Raptors. Every Phobos squad I have in my Deathwatch army is painted in Raptors colours, as they'd be the premiere experts of stealth warfare.
Firstly, excellent video as always Oculus.
Secondly, my favourite thing about the raptors is just that by existing, they prove that space marines don't have to be... Honour bound knights in space. Every other marinw chapter is like that by... If not choice then by inertia and that just makes them and all their strange pratices and battle tactics... Idk more appealing in a way.
Anyway rock you weird pragmatic bird boys.
One of my favorites Chapters. Wish they were more explored and written about
Wonderful record as always.
If I may ask, what can I do to raise the possibility of 'Index Astertes: Blood Ravens' entry?
He made that episode, but someone stole the script before it could be recorded.
GW used many things as a basis for a space marine legion/chapter, in the Raptors case it's actual special forces units.
In a universe of screaming battle cries and gnashing chainsaws together, one chapter dares to ask, "what if we didn't do that?"
😂😂😂
Those noise cause psychological effects to one’s mind to mental instability, and it is useful to cover the sound of movement.
I Read It in The Voice
Yay
beeeeeecause it's boring...? Here lies the line between the Old Guard and the Post-Millennials.
Space Marines fighting like a military force instead of acting like fantasy knights are a rarity in this setting.
*Modern military force.
Knights are still military, just premodern.
But that’s the charm of 40K, for me at least
bite your venemous tongue, heretic.many a world has not but the emperors grace and astarte to thank for their liberation from the hordes of xenos filth poisoning the galaxy
i LIKE HAVING BOTH.@@elicrosby1551
To be fair acting like fantasy knights seems to be more effective against the Daemonic forces 😅
Logical, tactical, reasonable, pragmatic. Yeah, these guys are that good. One of my favorite chapters in 40k. The canon Reasonable Marines, and are perfect chapter to represent that fan chapter.
if anything, they are more reasonable for the context of 40k than even the Reasonable Marines!
Raptor: "The enemy are dug in, use suppressive fire advance cover to cover"
Black Templars: "Charge the gun line!!!!"
I suspect one thing Raptors initiates are taught from a young age is that all other Astartes chapters are battle-hungry lunatics (until proven otherwise). And that the best you can do, when forced to operate in the same warzone, is to work _around_ the other marines.
Let the other chapters seek glory in death, while you use the distraction to flank and eliminate key targets.
@@Bluecho4Give Weight to Their Lives
Quite Respectable Really
@Bluecho4 Ironically the Raptors get along well with the Red Scorpions, a chapter that loves running in like lunatics.
The theory is the Raptors love working with them because by running in the Scorpions draw all the fire letting the Raptors more easily sneak around to flank and start sniping targers
The Raptors, the most Marine like Space Marines
babe wake up new depressed space history man video
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is no grammar
Also, is it really depression when he's right?
Hit-and-run tactics and long range marksmanship make a great deal of sense considering the numerical limitations of an Astartes Chapter as opposed to the former Legions.
Most chapters when they enter a Warzone, proceeded to the area where the heaviest fighting is and drop in right ontop of it. Using all the fire power at their disposal, to turn the tide of battle and earn glory for the chapter.
When the Raptors enter a Warzone, they pretty much ignore the fighting entirely and focus solely on their own strategic objectives. They have scout squads place targeting beacons, blast their objectives from orbit and leave before their own allies even knew they were there and turn the tide without even firing a bolter.
@@nobodyspecial9097 I am aware of that. I am making a statement about practicality.
Especially when you Legion was almost wiped out.
@@Bluecho4 Exactly. The silver lining of Istvan-V is that the Ravenguard specialized in the type of warfare made essential by their near destruction. Moreover, all three of the Shattered Legions arguably inspired the concept of the Deathwatch.
The answer to "What if Space Marines fought like real life Marines?"
Green Berets not Marines. That's more of Ultramarines which a USMC is glorified, Tough, Honored and a fighting machine. I'm pretty sure the writers inspired by how Green Berets operates, small man team, Gorilla warfare, long operations behind enemy and stealth.
I've read about the Raptors before, but something in your juxtaposition of their character and their tactics - their disinterest in personal glory and renown leading them to develop an emphasis on marksmanship - really struck me. Your deeper dives into Chaos have advanced the idea that swords cut daemons better because of the power that they have symbolically, that stories fight stories better than bullets do.
I wonder how the Raptors fare against Chaos. Not just its adherents, but against those touched by or made or the Warp. If they struggle, I'd suggest it isn't because they use guns, but because they have chosen to develop their chapter into soldiers, instead of warriors. It would take a truly spectacular marksman to build a legend of himself in a shooting war, and it would take an audience cognizant and caring of whose gun was winning the day to give that legend breath.
Their limited-deployment, team-coordinated tactics could hinder them in the 40k universe against the Archenemy, while they would still excel at warfare against creatures of the materium.
It could be that their surety in the efficacy of their methods creates a potent counter-narrative imposed on their Chaos enemies.
Other chapters, especially in the opening days of the Heresy, met the forces of Chaos with wariness. Granting the powers of the Warp a dread respect, if not exactly "fear". Subconsciously, they put Daemons on a pedestal. That they are something great and terrible. This, in turn, blunts the effectiveness of their guns. They had to take on melee arms to defeat them, in effect "rising to their level", in narrative terms. Knights raising their swords to fell dragons.
The Raptors _know_ their weapons work. They believe fully in the strength of their arms. In many ways, they drag Daemons down to the level of squad tactics. Making the fell Neverborn as vulnerable to bullet as any mortal. _Demystifying_ the mystical, and thus tearing away the armor granted by mystique.
"Ideas may be bulletproof. But you are not an idea. You are a creature. Nothing more. Creatures, no matter their origin, die to bullets all the same."
(As an aside, the way most chapters handle Daemons is probably part of why they render holy honors onto their guns. The "Holy Bolter", made out to be sacred, so it has the mythic bite normally afforded to swords. Engineering their own "mythic resonance", as it were.)
True and good.
But what is a better way to fight a Bloodthirster? Melee with personal honour or with superior firepower?
@@Bluecho4the exorcists chapter get demons to possess new recruits and if the recruits was able to defeat the demon then they got buffs against warp entities like being invisible to daemons if I remember correctly
@@Bluecho4careful Blue, or you'll get black-bagged by the Pataphysics department of the SCP Foundation.
In all honesty however that was my favourite comment to read of all the ones left here, beautiful.
"To say the 19th legion, Ravenguard, suffered during the years of the Horus heresy, is an understatement almost worthy of summary execution"
Such an awesome line, and as always amazing work with the narration and lore detail ❤
Wow this came at exactly the right time! Working on mapping out my raptors army now!
Any progress?
What minis should i use to make a raptor squad?
@@narusawa74 you would probably focus on phobos armored units, scouts, and fast attack options
Raptors, one of the best chapters ever
Must’ve been busy on Balam Industries sponsored field trips in the Warp.
As a fan of the other green guerilla warfare chapter, the Mantis Warriors, I'm envious. But as a fan of good content I'm just glad to see a new Oculus video. Makes my Friday just a bit sweeter.
I like they get along with the Black Templars. Raptors do all the sneaky stuff, BTs do all the frontal assault!
Like Captain America in the Avengers, "and Hulk.... smash!" Allowing your team to play to it's strengths and preferences. Trying to convince the Templars to do anything BUT a frontal assault? Pointless. Best to infiltrate, sabotage, and shape the battlefield to allow the screaming lunatics to do the most damage.
Yes! Really want more Index Astartes videos going over the slightly lesser known chapters.
I thought the Reasonable Marines were just a Meme Chapter.
Always a good day with new dispatches from Oculus.
I wonder how this chapter fared during the BADAB WAR?
This is the second Raptors lore video I have seen this week, and they have already won my heart. I hope there are novels with them in there 🙏🤩
Where can I find the other one? These guys are really fascinating, I want to learn more about them.
Deliverance Lost. It is the Horus Heresy novel describing the start of the Raptors. If you needed another reason to hate the Alpha legion, this will scratch that itch too.
@mikelund327 Well, it's too bad that the modern Raptors are descended from loyalist Alpha Marines that recreated the completely dead Raptors chapter as a means to reenter the Imperium on their own terms, right?
Total shift in combat doctrine?
Overly mysterious logistics and basing?
Friendly with normal humans?
Just kidding! Or am I?
@@YKK_Zipper_Cook Alpharius...😂
Love seeing my favorite Chapter on here.
These Indexes are a great idea, would like to see say Nemesis Chapter or Emperor's Spear
*Clever girl* ... 🦤
The slow zoom out on the picture of the raptor sniper using the corpse of the chaos space marine he just shanked in the neck as a *rest for his bolter* always brings a smile to my face.
The reasonable marines! Love these guys!:)
The answer to the question "what if Astartes acted like Marines?"
Nicely done, an enjoyable watch. 🙂
As much as I enjoy the over-the-top nature of 40K and most of it's factions, the Raptors are quickly becoming one of my favorite Chapters.
The Space Marines so nice, I had to paint the army twice (firstborn and primaris). These guys need more books.
A comment for the algorithm cogitators. Always a pleasure for a new entry from the Oculus
Just wanted to say that you are by far my favorite 40k lore channel. Thanks for doing what you do. Occulas your the greatest

To me the Raptors are Force Multipliers, Marine Recon, and Ranger/SEAL warfare.
Perfection.
There's almost nothing I would love more than having my own homebrew chapter described in such enrapturing detail.
One of the coolest space marine chapters for sure.
The CANON Reasonable Marines.
A new upload from the Occulus!
Oculus is so far ahead of any other lore creator out there its mind blowing.
Doctrinally, they’re definitely Raven Guard. Personality wise, they seem more like Ultramarines.
I mean, without being glory hounds or stick up the rear traditionalists.
Thank you for another great tale, historitor!
Oculus can you make a video on the mentors marine chapter
Well this is the fastest I've been able to access Oculus recordings
What is it about Raven Guard successors always being sus. Comes out of nowhere after being thought wiped out. Independent thinking outside of a central command. Subversive manipulation of an enemy into destroying itself. Pragmatic and secretive. A succesor of the Raven Guard and totally not the Alpha Legion the way the Carcharadons are a Raven Guard successor and totally not Night Lords.
I would agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that these guys have something that most marines don't. comment sense
My favorite voice AND my favorite chapter? In one video?
Wonder what the inquisition thinks about the independence of thought ?
My Favorite Astartes Chapter!!! RAPTORS GANG!!!
We love the Raptors in this house.
You just made the raptors one of my favorite chapters.
Praise the Emperor, a new Oculus video!
Their lore says Ravenguard descendants, but I can't help but feel the absolute pragmatism of the Raptors' tactics; especially when it comes to valuing non-astartes, ignoring woo-woo traditions, sowing internecine conflicts, and remaining as a dispersed force; are far more reminiscent of the Alpha legion, just with less x-zibit level op-sec.
"Pragmatism is part of my religion."
-Raptors Chaplain, probably.
Ah, the actually rational Space Marines.
It’s always a good day when we get a new video . Thanks for your work and dedication
Yees my favorite Marines
There are other lesser Chapters that not many people know about in term of being rational, tactical, logical or just uses common sense.
The Emperor's Warbringer, a drop pod precision assault specialist, also uses camouflage and prepare their ground first by using scouts to gather intelligence such as making military observation on enemy territory and identify key targets before they unleash a sudden but precise drop pod assault to end a conflict in one decisive action.
The Emperor's Havok are like a siege and urban warfare specialist version of the Raptors where they are pragmatic and don't care for glory but getting the job done.
Black Vultures are meticulous mission planners and are long range marksmen specialist which wait patiently to strike in order to ensure victory while minimizing causalities.
Mentors are a unique Chapter where their main pursuit is a fusion of science, art of war and military technology and every Astartes are equivalent to a military professor of science, history and technology.
I think these canon Reasonable Marines needs more spot lights and would love to see them work together with the Raptors.
wooooh! perfect thing to watch with my breakfast!
I imagine these guys and the guard get along real well.
Excellent work
They finally made the reasonable marines meme official canon.
“Is an understatement almost worthy of summary execution” I don’t know why that made me laugh out loud 😂
I came to the comments for this!
I am an arbite ⚖️🚨, and I can confirm that this is true 📖.
Best Raven Guard successor Chapter, second to Crimson Raptors
A riveting Astartes group if ever there was one. Their superlative flexibility is anathema to the staid doctrines of traditional Astartes. For that reason alone I adore Raptors. They are the tip of the spear, followed by the wallop of the Imperium.
The raptor chapter is by far my favorite space marine chapter and this is the most comprehensive lore video I've seen about them thank you for this gift
Catachans after watching Raptors do what they do best: That...we're gonna need more of that.
Huh… so what I’m hearing is a chapter that actually operates like a professional military force, and not a religious order, horde of cannon fodder, or mob of glory hounds.
I didn’t realize that was allowed!
Fuck yeah!
So glad the index astartes grows once again, videos never fail to amaze me! Ave Imperator
Nice another comfy upload
Have i missed some weird event or algotrithm thing? Raptors videos all popped up like theblast 5- 7 days 😂
The Reasonable Marines.™️😂
Excellent content and I enjoy your narration style. Fyi, I just found your channel
The Emperor's greatest historitor speaks to us again
My favourite space marine chapter...... God imagine a novel where the RAPTORS are fighting the Alpha Legion the skulduggery that would ensue
Oh man this is like a tiny second christmas! You are by far one of the best 40k youtubers, and i just recently started playing raptors right before 10th ed dropped. Timing couldnt have been better. Thank you for this amazing video!
This was the most "normal" sounding "Gloria in Excelsis Terra" in a long time.
Space Marines who use the Codex Astartes how it was supposed to be used.
A guide book.
“… is an understatement almost worthy of summary execution…” 😂🤣😂
Nice one, Centurion, like it… 🫡
What is the average airspeed velocity of an unladen Raptor?
dude i just love the raptors they got me very much into 40k
The Raptors & Black Templars are the best!
.....Hail the XIX & Son's of Dorn...
Canon accurate REASONABLE MARINES.
Love these guys
Well done!
Hearing them scavenge ork salvage makes me think they're so reasonable that if they ever caught wind of an Ork infiltrator they'd keep him so busy on missions to earn trust he'd never realize every humie there knew exactly what he really was but is so good at his other talents he's worth keeping around.
ah yes... Reasonable Marines
Clever boys!
Ah, the one's that care about winning. Good.
So, this is a Space Marine chapter with common sense.
My favorite chapter!
The best combo would be the Raptor chapters working alongside with the Retributors chapter. They're very similar in terms of culture except that the Retributors act more aggressively (aka shock troopers) compared to their Raptor cousins
Comment for the algorithm great video

Raptors, my favorite successor chapters from my favorite legion
Probably the only pre-Indomitus Chapter that would find utility in using Tau markerlights to designate targets for Hunter-Killer missiles.
