  • A lava lamp (or Astro lamp) is a novelty item used more for decoration than illumination-the slow, interesting rise and fall of variously-shaped blobs of wax is suggestive of lava, hence the name. The lamps are available with a variety of styles and colours of wax and liquid.

      I just restored my cloudy lamp, using instructions on RUclips. I used distilled water and epsom salt. The instructions also called for clear dish soap. But I didn't need the soap. Just the water and epsom salt.

      @@markmarkofkane8167 I tried that after my man friend was mucking about and my birthday gift lava lamp bounced onto the floor, i bought a bottle of distilled water and epsom salts from eBay and followed instructions by pouring water from the lamp down the sink and rinsing the bottle out .Best to put lava lamp in fridge so the wax is rock hard before draining cloudy water down sink though.
      Carefully poured distilled water into lamp and then a few teaspoons of epsom salts then turned it on to heat up then added some ecover washing up liquid , i just could not get the formula right but what i have found out since is it is only tap water and clear washing up liquid.

      @@2011williamandkate I guess results vary depending on the brand. Mine wasn't the Lava Lamp brand, but another. But it still is clear, and works well for me.

    One of the best videos I have ever seen on how the Lava Lamp works!!! It's cool how it was shown cut in the middle for a better understanding of what's in the inside and to show how it works. Very Nice!!!

      saskocar it would probably work with proper bulbs i dont think the container has much to do with how it moves

      +saskocar The size of the the wall would cool the wax before it even got halfway up the wall. If you could find a way to replicate the heat spring effect across the whole bottom half of the wall, you might be able to. Same concept with the aquarium, and if you made it double walled you could even put fish in it with the proper construction.

      It probably has something to do with the price of some lava lamps! The technology behind them (lamp, water, wax) has been revealed as being cheap to produce, but some lava lamps cost a lot of money.. maybe people who paid a lot of money for a lamp disliked the video? 🤔

    The question I had, which wasn't addressed in this video... Why don't the warm and cool blobs of wax mix with each other when they hit each other? That they bounce off each other is is by FAR the biggest reason a lava lamp looks so cool. I majored in physics, and I don't have a good reason why this happens... I would be interested in any thoughts you guys have.

      You answered it yourself. It’s cause one blob is cool and one blob is hot. That’s why they don’t mix. The hot ones particles inside expand and go up and the cool ones particles tighten which makes it dense and go down.

    Nice video, but it only gets into convection and the density cycle (I already knew that part). I'd really like to know more about the membranes the wax forms to keep it in discreet globs, instead of simply wanting to mix with the water. The wax blobs' surface integrity eventually becomes so high that the globs vehemently resist absorbing into each other. They usually have to press against each other for several seconds or longer before they'll even think about absorbing in, and that's at the bottom of the lamp by the heat (at the top and center they're even more opposed to merging).
    The surface tension also affects how easily globs split. In my larger lamp, it will create some fairly long filaments that don't want to collapse into their own globs until they're stretched very thin. In the smaller lamp, the globs like to split apart much more readily, so maybe the type of wax being used is different. The larger lamp is also much older (I picked it up used, and it works much better than the smaller lamp), so that may be affecting how the wax behaves.
    I don't remember my chemistry very well, but I think someone once explained to me that water tension is caused because the bipolar water molecules line up and form a polarized surface. However, water droplets generally have a very high affinity for each other, easily merging together and staying together until they reach a certain critical size and the surface tension cannot fight the weight anymore. However, lava lamp globs are hostile to one another and don't want to merge easily (at least once the lamp has been running for a couple hours), and will even form water bubbles inside them and have a double or quadruple series of membranes creating distinct layers or pockets, all of which resist merging or rupturing for long periods of time. In that sense they're more like living cell membranes, and the proto-cells that presumably preceded life (yea yea, long stretch I know).
    I wonder if a chemist could give me a basic explanation of what's happening there. I'm guessing it's something cool with the wax molecule's structure, but it could be the water or a mixture of water-was that forms at the surface...? Whatever the case, it would be fun to find out.

      So that's a bit on the chemistry, but it's still not much.
      I've also been watching my lamp more. I do think there's more than just surface tension alone going on though, since the drops of wax don't like to recombine with each other easily the way water droplets do. I've looked closely at my lamp and noticed they never physically touch (except when the lamp is just getting going, which is when drops combine easily). There's a thin layer of water always separating the globs, and they slide right past each other with this layer of water greasing the surfaces. It takes some resting time before that water becomes thin enough for the two globs to touch and combine, or perhaps for some other physical process to take part.
      Maybe that's normal for surface tension; maybe drops of less viscous materials, like water droplets in air, simply combine more readily. But I wonder if there's actually a polar, two-sided membrane that's a combination of wax and water that repels the same-poled surface of other drops, and that surface has to be punctured or weakened before drops can combine.
      At least, that's what I think is happening. Lots of speculation currently. A chemist may be able to offer better information.

    A new lava lamp needs a break in period, somewhere around 4 even 6 months of 8-10 hours a day of on time, 14 hours off. Eventually it settles into a smoother cleaner look

    You can actually test this expansion of the wax in the lava lamps. Mark a line of the very surface of the water when cold, and then when it's hot the surface of the water is higher than when it is cold.

    I just got a lava lamp, and I can see through the lava and there are lots of bubbles in it. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with it?

      Generally happens when the lamp is ran too long. Many people leave them on 24/7 without thinking otherwise, but generally you only want them to run more than about 12 hrs, or the wax overheats and essentially cooks.

      +Danker Barrel Food colouring can be used to change the colour of the water. There's no issue with it, just be careful, one drip often is enough. You need to very carefully remove the cap (don't damage it) and rubber stopper, add a drip of colouring, wait for a bit, and add another drip if the colour is too light. When it is right, put the rubber stopper back, then the cap. It is most important that the rubber stopper is properly closing off the globe, else the water inside will evaporate. It goes without saying, but do this when the lamp is off.
