I was able to get off my Armour Thyroid 60 mcg. I was having Hyper symptoms and high pulse. I did my own N=1 experiment (you should check with your doctor, this is just what I did). I weaned off meds slowly. Waited 6 weeks and my doctor tested my TSH only (new doctor). It was high at 14.38. I agreed to test again in 3 months. I took 200 mcg Selenium and 600mg Myo-Inositol. Always take D3 (10,000 IU). I ordered my thyroid lab online so I could get more than TSH. After 3 months my TSH was down to 6.4, Free T3, RT3, and Free T4 were all in the normal range. In older adults it is OK to have higher TSH (i.e. 70 years old a TSH of 7.0 is normal; 80 years old a TSH of 8.0 is normal). I consider my thyroid levels normal. I have Hashimoto's and my TPO levels are still high at 616, but I feel great. Thank you so much Dr. Ruscio.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 *🩺 Interpreting thyroid lab panels is crucial, as evidenced by a meta-analysis showing 37.1% of individuals didn't need thyroid medication.*
03:59 *📊 Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) ranges commonly reported on lab results are vital, but be cautious of narrow ranges leading to overmedication.*
07:10 *🩸 Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) antibody levels indicate Hashimoto's risk, with values above 500 indicating higher risk.*
08:33 *🔍 Only 5% of individuals with positive TPO antibodies develop hypothyroidism, highlighting the importance of understanding risk.*
12:53 *🔄 Sluggish thyroid (subclinical hypothyroidism) can often normalize without medication, with 74% returning to normal thyroid function.*
15:50 *💊 Routine thyroid hormone therapy isn't recommended for subclinical hypothyroidism, as it doesn't improve quality of life or symptoms.*
19:14 *🌿 Supplements like selenium, myo-inositol, vitamin D, and probiotics may support thyroid function and reduce TSH levels in sluggish thyroid cases.*
24:33 *📉 Guidelines help interpret thyroid conditions: TPO antibodies over 500, TSH over 4.5 (up to 7-10) with normal free T4 indicate Hashimoto's and sluggish thyroid.*

I've been listening to your channel for more than a year now, and really appreciate the depth of information you provide on your channel. As an older person (69), I am interested in hearing what you think about elevated TSH with normal T3 and T4 in older people. There's a lot of observational research looking at the oldest old. And many of those people have elevated TSH levels (4 - 10). Of course, I know that observational research cannot sort out the personal questions I have as a person with sustained TSH in the 6 - 10 range. I would hope that it means that subclinical hypothyroidism (which you call sluggish thryoid) reduces metabolism, and has a longevity effect. Any thoughts on this?

@drruscioDC you need to cover metabolic conversion ratios. FreeT3 at the nucleus of cells is what matters, so you can have hypo symptoms, but have great FT4, but low FT3, which means too little FT3 at nucleus (some FT4 is converting to FT3 in cells). See Gullo et al. These are the types of people whom LT4 therapy does not work for. Depending on the disease, NDT or Cytomel may bandaid well for low FT3, as the person works on the underlying health issue. I've been there with bad conversion ratio (mercury toxic), that went away after ACC mercury detox. Its real.

Everything was normal for me. I had high ldl, late 40s. I was put on armor because of subclinical t3 level of 2.2. My t3 went lower with the 15mg. Now My TSH is suppressed. I've been medicated 2.5 years. I exercise a lot more and with 105mg of armor my t3 is at about 2.5 or so. If I try 120 mg my t3 actually goes barely outside normal range. Is .3 worth $100 out of pocket cost for this drug for the rest of my life? I started taking it thinking it would make weight loss way easier but my weight has stayed stable. My body composition has improved from being much more active though. I've had to also add a drop of iodine and a couple of iron tablets every day so my labs will show what my doctor thinks they should be

It’s also important to check cholesterol. My doctor kept my thyroid meds constant while my FT 4 was normal but TSH was up and down constantly over 6 months. He was convinced the TSH would normalise. Meanwhile my cholesterol kept climbing and instead he offered me statins. I believe unstable thyroid has driven up my cholesterol.

I'm on 50mcg Levothyroxine for over 10 yrs, I'm still freezing in the Winter, wearing 3 layers in the house and when I told my GP she said , "put on another layer." No other suggestions, didn't bother to refer me to an endocrinologist nor give a script for a thyroid scan. My HR is low, but it doesn't bother me. My TSH is 2.54 on 50mcg. But I don't know what the other tests are bc I've not been tested!! GP says she only tests TSH. I'm going to go to a functional medicine doctor.

    • @KetovoreWayOfLife

@SeaStarGazer1111 same with me. My Dr. only had a TSH lab test done. I had to go back and ask to get a Free T3, Free T4 and Thyroid Antibody tests. Unfortunately she didn't request the TPO antibody test but the Thyroglobulin antibody test which now per Dr. Rusio doesn't mean squat in determining if you're hypothyroid. Ugh 😩 I just told my Dr. who is a family Dr. to just send my to an Endocrinologist. Where there I'm hopeful to get the FULL Thyroid Panel test done (FT3, FT4, TPO antibody, and Reverse T3, Reverse T4 if needed ) and any other required tests.
Wishing you good luck in finding a resolution.

I fired my GP for not doing a full thyroid panel once a year, only tsh. I changed to a GP in the same clinic. She knew why I switched and she checks tsh, T4 and T3 every year. We need to advocate for ourselves (our health is important to us, if not the doctor) and find a dr who will work with us.

Hello Doctor, I am new to your chanel.
I have two questions and I would be very grateful if you could help.
My thyroid was a little bit inhomogenous in the ultrasound. Does that always means that a person has a problem or can even a healthy thyroid appear inhomogeneous?
And let's say someone has Hashimoto's. If he changes his lifestyle completely and fixes the causes (diet, stress, etc.), can this person also stop taking medication at some point in his life?
    Thank you very much!

Hello, if you're trying to wean off thyroid and retest after first 4 weeks of reducing from 800 mg of thyroxine per week to 500 per week (and low carb, high fat, no sugar, no grain, selenium, magnesium, zinc, iron, gallbladder supplements) and tsh has gone from (UK measurements) 1.9 to 38, t4 from 19 to 11 and t3 from 3.1 to 1.8 (but no real detectable symptoms) , is there absolutely no chance that this could be the thyroid adjusting to the lowered dose and could kick into life or is it an indicator to get the dose back up ASAP! Any advice greatly appreciated. I think it's a sign that the thyroid isn't going to crank back into action but wanted to check before rushing back to higher dose. Any information greatly appreciated and totally understood that it is not specific medical advice for me as an individual.

Tsh is 48.29 but my t4 1.0 make sense of that? In the time this happened over 6 months my A1c gone from 5.5 to 5.9 cholesterol levels in triglycerides shot up significantly. Insulin resistance would be my guess. Because hdl is now 39 from 50. I am a diabetic and 60 years old. Have had it for a few years diagnosed and untold many years ago without knowing it since fasting glucose is. Normal. But my weight +30 pounds above ideal now only 5 pounds above Ideal. My labs look ridiculous though I feel great and I not fat. I don’t understand myself. I was born with no thyroid gland or tissue but do not have thyroid antibodies. Also hypo gonadal and had cancer of ovatesties. DSD. Not on HRT at the moment but trying to get it . To many dr are scared to try even though I am a walking case of spay neuter for 15 years and the diabetes thing is difficult to manage. I been taking thyroid medication since I was 5 weeks old. These types of videos really are just so absolutely bleak for me and truthfully I think that this type of approach actively hurts people who really do need this medication as well as NDT. Only medication made it possible for me to wake up in the morning and enjoy the privilege of being a normal human being. I'm sure you mean well, and obviously know how to read studies. I'm certainly interested in what "medication" was used in the study for sluggish thyroid. I think this approach is what led us to prioritizing levothyroxine over NDT in the first place, and is a reason people such as myself suffer.
