How much Gold is ACTUALLY in a "Solid Gold" Rolex?

  • You'd be surprised how much gold a gold luxury watch contains! But don't take our word for it. See how we take a popular gold Rolex apart and find out its exact gold content by weight.
    The watch we used in this picture is the yellow gold Rolex Day-Date 40, reference number 228238, which is going for around $39,000 in the market as of the day this video was recorded (on 10/8/2020).
    Typically, the difference in price between similar stainless steel and gold models of a specific watch brand is significant. Some people think that the price difference is due to the value of gold, but is it really? I mean, the watch movement is not made out of gold, since both gold and stainless timepieces of the same model/brand have the same movements. What's different are the other parts, like the case, bracelet, etc.
    So we set out to take the watch apart and weigh those parts, then calculate their total value based on the market price of gold, which was around $1,900 a troy ounce (or $61 a gram) on the day we recorded the video footage.
    On the video, you'll see our preferred watchmaker, Yuri Lopez from Chrono Sky (Instagram link below), take the watch apart and set each gold piece on a calibrated scale.
    / chronosky
    What interesting thing to mention is that during the last 20 year period, from 2000 to 2020, gold outperformed the US stock market (S&P 500) by a pretty wide margin, making an investment in gold during that same period worth 7 times the initial amount!
    On a side note, gold luxury watches, whether for men or women, are made in 18K gold, which is 75% gold by weight. On the video, we also compare the gold weight of the watch to a 24K chunk of gold.
    After you watch the video, comment how close was your guess...what percentage of the gold watch's price was due to the dollar value of its gold content?
    Happy Guessing!

    I had this value proposition when I saw a 1990s 18k Rolex going for $8,500 in 2016-2017. Gold was less but I knew it was perhaps $5000-$6000 on the metal value and the labor value of creating the watch too.
    Watches have value because of the engineering behind it, and as it's a store of labor. Gold has a value because of the time it takes to mine, its rarity and its refinement process.

      Actually no. Worth is not the same as Price. These watches cost a lot because of marketing. When you buy a 10k$ Rolex, you spend about 1000 to 1500$ on the actual watch. The other 8500 is the price of the name 'Rolex'. Let's not fool ourselves. Rolex makes about a million watches a year. It's an industrialized, mostly automated proccess. Their movements are no better than any top grade ETA, and even worse than the Coaxials you'll find in Omegas priced half as much.

      So a $39,000 gold watch with only approximately $9,000 worth of gold will have a mark up of $30,000 ? Sounds more like price gouging off of a luxury brand name . Unless the watch is a one of a kind time piece then there is no valid justification for a mark up that high . I'm pretty sure that some of the internal mechanism are used in their other models of Rolex watches because it is massed produced . It's not like you have to wait for the watch to be made on every order , the model watch is sitting in many show case retail stores or stock rooms . It's not even a limited edition in design and technology . There is no $39,000 worth of craftsmanship and materials in the watch but it s mostly $39,000 worth of status symbolism that is being paid for .

    • @Crmjewelers

    • @LordFirestaff
      @LordFirestaff 3 года назад +2

      @@mannybruce8950 Yes and no. One thing you should consider is that you're helping to pay quite a few people's salaries when you buy a watch like this. Even if there is roughly $30K worth of profit, that isn't just going into the pocket of one person/company. Rolex employs 4,000 people worldwide. These people are paid very well for the products they put out. Aside from that, there are also the dealers to account for which make a decent commission on the product. I agree it's somewhat of a status symbol, but it creates ways to help the super wealthy shed some of that weight in wealth and spread it around. When you consider non luxury brand watches, like G Shock for example, that you can pick up in Walmart for $200-$400, not a lot of people are making decent money off of something like that. The commissions can't be very high (if any at all), and because they sell in volume, most of the profits go right into the pockets of the manufacturer. I think there is a huge plus side to having luxury brands on the open market by helping a lot of everyday people earn a better living.

    Currently, as of 8/8/2024, the price on Rolex Sky Dweller 42mm Solid Yellow Gold with Jubilee bracelet (Ref #: 336938) is $51,000, while the price on the same model in Stainless-Steel Oyster, 42mm, Oystersteel and white gold (bezel) (Ref #: 336934) is $16,000. So, the price difference (i.e. premium paid) for getting 18K gold variant is $34,900.
    Now, using your video as a reference we can try to calculate the true justifiable ballpark value difference attributable to pure gold. We'll make one adjustment: the size of the watch that you reviewed is 40 mm, while the Sky Dweller that I looked at is 42 mm, which I'll assume 5% larger (42/40 = 105%), so I'll adjust all my numbers up by +5%. I don't know the weight difference between the Jubilee and the President bracelets (which was used in your video) so I'm not going to apply any additional adjustments for that.
    According to Rolex description, a fluted bezel is always made out of gold, so we can factor that in our calculations: for 42mm Sky Dweller the weight of the 18K bezel is 9.4g, which is about 0.227 ozt of pure gold (9.4g / 31.1034768 g/ozt x 0.75 = 0.227 ozt). That's the gold parts weight in the Stainless-Steel model.
    For the solid yellow gold model, I'll take the weight from your video 178.3g and will bump it up by 5%, due to the size difference: 178.3 x 1.05 = 187.2g - this will be the estimated weight of gold parts in the yellow gold 42mm Sky Dweller model, which translates into 4.514 ozt of pure gold (187.2g / 31.1034768 g/ozt x 0.75 = 4.514 ozt).
    So, the pure gold weight difference between the gold and stainless steel variants is around 4.29 ozt of pure (24K) gold, which given today's price of gold of $2,464/ozt, has a value of $10,565 - that's how much more a gold watch should justifiably be sold for in comparison to the S/S variant. However, Rolex charges you a whopping $34,900 for that difference!! That is absolutely crazy!! An extra $24,335 (or 9.88 ozt of gold) for basically nothing. What a robbery!! So, if someone thought that buying a gold Rolex would be a good investment, because they would also be getting exposure to gold - that would be a HORRIBLE decision. Instead, if they also want to invest in gold, they would be much better off by buying a S/S watch and using the rest of the "gold watch" budget to buy almost 10ozt of pure gold.
    But, that's not all, let's factor in the sales tax. If you live in NYC the sales tax is 8.875%, and there is no sales tax if you buy gold. So, if you factor in the sales tax the rip-off difference gets even more pronounced. Now, you would be paying $38,000 extra for the $10,565 of true extra gold exposure, in other worlds wasting $27,433 or 11.13 ozt of pure gold!!
    In conclusion, by buying a solid gold Rolex watch you are giving up over 11 ozt of pure gold!! That is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. Never-ever buy a solid gold Rolex (IMHO).

    I have a vintage 36mm Rolex DayDate Reference 1803 with a presidential bracelet (version with hidden clasp) in 18k yellow gold. The watch weighs a total of 127.5 grams. I once disassembled the watch because I had installed a new dial to it and then weighed all the gold parts. The Rolex movement 1556 with dial and hands had a weight of 23 grams and the acrylic glass another 2.5 grams. The bracelet, watch case, case back and crown together had a weight of exactly 102 grams. But only 75% of these 102 grams are pure gold. That's 76.5 grams. That's 4,600$ of precious metal.

    Rolex has their own foundry and a team of Metallurgist. They use superior alloys such as platinum or palladium in some cases to stabilize and inhibit tarnishing. Every other timepiece manufacturer simply orders 18kt. It also allows them unique opportunities to come up with some one of a kind products. The dream dust Dials were a direct result of the research team looking at the gold cooling which created a dream dust look and applying that to there dial making.

      Yeah, rolex have the best marketing for sure but they very stale with regards to design, complications, movement finishing and innovation.

    A fallacy in the report but the overall point is a good one. You say most of the price "has nothing to do with the precious metal content." Even though the greater expense may not be from the value of the pure gold content, it could be that an 18k gold Rolex is more expensive to make than a steel one, if a) forming, assembling, and polishing the parts is more expensive with gold (maybe it requires more care or more refined or delicate machinery), or b) maybe Rolex's 18k gold has expensive alloys (the metals mixed with the pure gold to make it 18k) or maybe Rolex has some special way to "mix" its gold. Rose gold, for example, is more expensive than yellow, though it has the same pure gold content. White gold I believe might be 18k, but has silver(?) mixed into it. So, in any of these explanations, the higher price clearly "has something to do with" the precious metal content, even a lot to do with it. But this is all speculation on my part. For that matter, they may even be factoring the cost of transporting or insurance or any other considerations that wouldn't apply with steel.
    Still, excellent point that it is nowhere near $20,000 worth of gold. Excellent education of consumers in this message. I have often wondered this question. Depending on how accurate my speculations may be, the point definitely stands, probably 90-95-99% accurate. Thank you for the fascinating, very informative video!!

    • @Alias_Anybody
      @Alias_Anybody 3 года назад +3

      They showed the actual metal content in the video, the 25% are almost 50/50 silver and copper, pretty standard alloy for gold jewelry. And making the parts isn't much harder than it would be with steel either (movement isn't made of gold anyway, other parts are rather straight forward).
      The price of a Rolex has almost nothing to do with how much it costs to make, just how much the pimps are willing to pay for the brand on the dial.

  • @Steveman27
    @Steveman27 3 года назад +2

    I would have thought with that kind of price, it would've been approximately 90%. I guess I was a bit off. For around 39 grand, I think all of the gold parts of the rolex should have been pure gold.

    • @bluefoo1415
      @bluefoo1415 3 года назад

      Pure gold is way to soft. The watch would break in a week. Even 18kt gold is considered soft. Most watch collectors only wear their solid gold watches on occasion simply because it would become damaged fairly quickly from every day use

    • @Steveman27
      @Steveman27 3 года назад +3

      @@bluefoo1415 Makes sense. I heard that even silver is a soft metal, though not as soft as gold, and I guess that's why all, or at least most, silverware that's made out of actual silver, is sterling silver, which is like around 90% silver while the rest is other metals. For 39 grand, I guess that rolex was top of the line.

    • @bluefoo1415
      @bluefoo1415 3 года назад

      @@Steveman27 but yeah like i find it bullshit how they charge so much more for precious metals then what its actually worth, espeshelly gold chains, there isn't much labour in making gold jewelry. Its always better to buy hand mand gold jewelry from small jewelers in India or the middle east, they only charge for the value of the gold plus 10 - 15% for labour.

    Rolex's 18k Gold: Gold (Au) 75% , Silver (Ag) approx 12.5% and Copper (Cu) approx 12.5%. But looks like a lil pinch more Copper than Silver to reach that perfect yellow color.

  • @mrmo4059

    My guess was 30% and I thought that was low. Thank you for giving me a quantitative reason not to buy a gold rolex apart from the fact that i dont have £30-40k. Audemars Piguet gold watches are even more expensive than rolex, so the 20% for rolex is probably only 10% for AP.

      And Audemars Piguet, especially the RO Off-shores has rubber bracelets instead of gold, yet it’s prices are higher than full gold Rolex President. Of course they are also only 18 karat gold, you don’t want your watch deformed midway to lunch.
      But again it begs question, are you buying high-end timepiece with its known watchmaking history or are you only buying gold?

    You should also do a similar on take on a Rolex stainless steel watch of exactly the same type as the gold version . I bet you would find both identical watch movement vary greatly in price reference to the cost of the Gold. It other words the Gold version would be hiked up by a huge margin whey above the value of the Gold. ( same Rolex movement + stainless case/strap ) against
    ( same Rolex movement + gold case and strap ) so you will be paying for gold way above its actual value. Just because its a Gold Rolex .

    • @Crmjewelers
      @Crmjewelers  3 года назад

      Unfortunately, there's no stainless version of the gold Rolex model we experimented with, but regardless, stainless steel models have an even greater discrepancy between the material costs and the watch price.

    Buying a NEW solid gold watch is almost the most expensive way to buy gold known to man.
    Buying a VINTAGE gold watch such as a Tissot or Certina from the 60's or 70's can be done for just over the scrap value (and sometimes less).

  • @jcraigshelton

    The value of the crystal on the watch, which on Rolex timepieces, is actually sapphire, is fairly substantial as well.
