That flipping switch is an old school thing. It was fairly popular back in the late 80’s early 90’s. Quite a few reels had those switches. Then they kind of faded out in popularity. I had an old AbuGarcia with a flipping switch and I used several other reels with it. I am not a fan of it myself. I always ended up grinding gears by engaging the reel while the spool was still spinning when I used the flipping switch. I prefer using my thumb, and with experience you can get extremely fast at engaging the reel with the same hand you use to palm the reel.
