I would think that going up to about 10,000 feet elevation first might help? Any thoughts and thank you.
Any hikes at higher elevations that you can do beforehand would be good! From what we have heard altitude can bother you one time and not the other. Is your friend and her son going with a group or on their own with a guide?
I am planning The Island, to the top, in 11 or 12 months. My first and probably only 6k mountain. Some easier hills this summer. But you two are young, and have many hills to summit! Good for you.
Great video you two. Just think of those who pay up to USD$65,000 to climb to the top, and many have to cancel with less than 100 mts vertical to go, after staying there for two months and those are the lucky ones if you take into consideration the ones that never go back to their loved ones and remain buried on the mountain. The reward vs risk assesment for this trek was almost infinite given all you guys were able to experience at different levels, and I believe, you only shared a small percentage of it. Now getting into the 60's, but planning to accomplish the trek just like the two of you. Congratulations and great job !
I did that hike around the same time but we did EBC first and Kala Patthar was an optional hike the next day. Doesn't make sense to do such a strenuous hike first and wear people out. I'd be upset with that outfitter for bad planning.
If you are going again, a really good option to avoid the flight to Lukla is to take the original hike starting in Jiri. It is the original route that Hilary took when they conquered Everest. It is a 6 day hike to Lukla which gives a great way to acclimate and there are no crowds that you often get on the EBC route. It makes a longer trip, particularly if you hike from Jiri to Lukla and back. You could also try the 3 Peaks Trek to add another challenge. You made it to Kala Patar so could do the other climbs. I would also do the trek on your own then you don't have to worry about others. Next year when I return, I'll watch for your stickers.
My daughter just completed this trek. It was almost called off due to bad weather but they got lucky and weather improved. Top tip: she was in a party of just 3 people. Less chance of being called off due to others in party getting ill. Ps. What you achieved in any event was awesome. Congrats
Thanks!! Zach did the Inca Trail with some friends a few years before we met. He loved it. We hope to go back and do it together as it’s been on my list for awhile! I was hoping to go after spending some time in the Amazon, but flights were just as expensive from Colombia as they were from home so, decided to go elsewhere afterwards. It’s on the list!!
Our amazing Sherpa is Kami! Here is his Facebook profile - you can reach out to him and say you got referred by Zach and Danielle and he can arrange everything! facebook.com/kami.nurbusherpa?mibextid=LQQJ4d
Just watching your video as I’m headed to base camp in October. Sorry that you didn’t get to the stones/sign BUT on your point on missing out on talking to Everest climbers - the base camp you go to as an EBC trekker is not the actual base camp where the Everest climbers are hanging I’ve been told. I don’t know anyone who trekked EBC who got to interact with Everest climbers. If that makes you feel better! Unless you guys were getting some special arrangement. Ps. Did you do the whole trek in leggings? I was planning on wearing thermals and hiking pants to double layer as I was even a bit cold in that on Kilimanjaro and in Patagonia. Well done guys and thanks for the footage
Thanks for the comment!! Yes, I did the whole trek in leggings (and lots of layers on top). I think there was one day where I put an extra pant layer on top of my leggings. It was cold, but once you’re moving it’s not too bad as long as you have lots of top layers. I had warm socks too :) We did it in May though, so I’m not sure if October would be more cold?! We had been hoping since it was May and that’s around the time the climbers push for the summit that we’d get to interact with some! I think next time we go Kami, our amazing guide, he might be able to work that out for us, but you’re right…with a group it doesn’t seem like you’d be able to, typically. Have an amazing time on your trip, it’s going to be soooo great!! 😊
@@ZachandDanielle I’ve heard (just some chats on Reddit) that unless you see them in the tea houses, they stay higher up in Base Camp and won’t talk to trekkers because they don’t want to get sick.
Hi, nice video. Heartbreaking not to go all the way...I've travelled several times to Nepal hiking and climbing. I do it on my own with a guide. This way it's done the way I like it. My times, my speed, basically I'm in control of the adventure......BTW, best burgers are in the irish pub in Namche. ❤
We will try the burgers next time we go!! We had a drink there :) And agreed - usually we do all our hikes on our own, and would have done this just with the Sherpa but we were invited by our neighbour actually, who has been so many times with this group and it was going to be his last time doing it as he is getting older so we did it this way this time. No regrets - we had a great time and met Kami and other amazing people!! We will use Kami as our Sherpa when we return … he is the best :)
At least you got to experience what it’s like. The next time will be even more exciting. I enjoyed seeing this viewpoint. Thanks for sharing the experience with us. I look forward to your next adventure. 😊
Next May I will be on my way to EBC after so many years of waiting for it. You gave me some good tips for the trip. Maybe we will meet somewhere there, who knows. I try to find your stickers anyway 😉
No failure in mountaineering. When you need to go back, you just go back. You guys did amazing. Kala Patthar Summit is much more difficult than that 3km to EBC from Gorak Shep. Well done! These are lifelong memories.
Oh, well, no biggie. Been there, didn’t do your other 5k peaks, and EBC was a fun box to check. And, at the end? You mention Island Base Camp! That is our next gig in Nepal….
Thanks!! 😊 Are you going to climb island peak or just go to base? We just went to base because we didn’t have time to climb, but a friend of ours climbed it years ago and really enjoyed it!
Awesome accomplishment. This is in no means a failure. Kala Patthar is 5545 M where as EBC is 5365 M. I did EBC in Oct '23 but still rue not making to Kala Patthar. Good luck for your next attempt.
Kala Patthar is an awesome accomplishment. It's higher than I have ever been at Thorong La 5416 m. Congratulations 🎉 I loved seeing the route through your eyes
This is why, i decided to Go solo, No group, no hassle, no trouble. Unless i get myself into the trouble. Hopefully I'll get a clear weather in December.
Nice accomplishment either way, and you’re basically there so congrats. Hiking here in a different B.C. (British Columbia 😅) stuff like this has so often happened to me and ppl I was with on hiking trips, road trips etc, where something out of the blue came up to foil our plans. I felt so bad knowing you could have gotten to your goal after pushing yourselves for such a long trip. After watching pretty much every harrowing Everest documentary & video on RUclips, I know that Sherpa’s know best! But in your case just going to B.C. I thought they could have been more lenient knowing that you were fit, responsible and so on. I would’ve pushed them a bit more and offered them a tip to let me go and meet them back at such & such a time, but every situation is different. Just keep being good to each other because you seem like a great couple and you’re having awesome life experiences together and growing together, which is the journey part .. ♥️
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment!!! We had such a great time, and will go back. Everything happens for a reason, it was a wonderful experience ❤️
What agency did you book this with so I can make sure NEVER to use them. The planning of going to Kala Pattar instead of base camp was the wrong move. Great video I feel your pain and await your next trip to EBC. mine is going to happen Nov 2025. I'm training now.
Usually they go to base as soon as they arrive in Gorak Shep, and then those that want to do Kala Patthar early in the morning for sunrise. Due to weather, we were told to do it in reverse (and to be fair we had amazing views of Everest from Kala Patthar that day that we wouldn’t have if we did it the following morning), but since people in our group got sick that night the group leader said no one can go to base. In hindsight, we should have just gone haha, but, we were being respectful and listened. We are planning our trip back and won’t run into this again; we will be booking things ourselves and going directly with our Sherpa Kami (who is AMAZING)! Good luck with your trip!!! It’s a beautiful place, full of beautiful people.
At 1:48 what are they doing to the dog? It looks like fire, but I thought that they celebrated and love dogs in Nepal and are against hurting/eating them 😭
how did edHillary managed to walk that mileage with Tensing . EdHillary gear are displayed at AucklandMuseum . Very heavy gears but he made it . frm NewZealand
Thank you! We didn’t really experience any, but others did. We mostly just felt more easily out of breath at times when climbing up to some of the peaks. But, some people got worse symptoms such as breathing difficulties and headaches.
Hmmm, you shud have just gone :/ however just to say people aren't allowed to talk or meet climbers in their areas who are summiting. I was surprised myself to see no entry after the main ebc sign. Not many people know that... so you saw as much as most from kala pathar....congrats to you both.
Oh that’s interesting!! We didn’t know that!! Our Sherpa guide said next time he can set up some tea with some of the groups for us. We will have to check into that further!! Thanks for watching and for the congrats!! And congrats to you too for having done it as well!! :)
I did buy them in Nepal! In Kathmandu! They are super cozy :) I think you can find similar ones in North America too…but I wouldn’t know where to suggest! Maybe you’ll need to do a trip to Nepal ;)
@@ZachandDanielle Also, that being said, the best view of Everest is the one you got on top of Kala Patthar. Most people just go to the sign/rock and back to Gorak Shep. I got to spend a night in Base Camp and walk around the glacier which was incredible. But I was supposed to climb Island Peak and some bum showed up with Covid and got the whole group of us sick and we had to scratch the climb. So you also got to see things most EBC trekkers don’t. It looks and sounds like your journey was amazing… and that’s the most important part. ❤️❤️
@@JewelsHanson-gb4kl It was an amazing trip! That is cool you got to spend the night at Base Camp and explore the glacier! Sorry to hear you didn’t get to Island Peak. Zach and I hiked to Island Peak Base Camp on our own which was cool, but we didn’t climb higher than that as we didn’t plan for it or have the time at that point. We are all lucky for the experiences we had there!!! I’m sure you had an amazing time too, despite not getting to do Island Peak - and maybe you’ll go back!
Thank you! Our neighbour is friends with the owner of Sherpa Encounters who supports a lot of families in Nepal and takes groups there. Eoin the owner is great. Going forward we will just book directly with our Sherpa Kami who you see in the video! His email is kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com. He is wonderful!
You must be thinking of all the climbers that are in base camp at the moment. I read this morning that 2 climbers were swept off the mountain at the Hilary step. When are you planning on going back?
We went with a group from Canada, and the leader of that group (Sherpa Encounters) works closely with amazing Sherpas and porters. He was the one that made the call for the group to not go. We don’t think that’s a typical thing - usually the group would be split, but we think due to his health at the time, some of those in the group, and the length of the hike that day he just called it off. In hindsight would he have done the same thing if we could go back in time? I’m not sure…. But we will go back again and book directly with Kami, our Sherpa - he can set everything up and then you don’t have to go with a group either.
Base camp is main objective on the trip, should be reached before kala patthar, all off my group of 16 reached base camp and it was optional to do kala patthar following morning which 6 off us left to do at 5am before everyone left that day
That was our plan but the weather was perfect the day we arrived in Gorak Shep. Had we of done it that way (if he would have allowed those who wanted to go up to Kalla Patthar to do so) we wouldn’t have had the views we did. We will go back!!
Berapa biaya yang harus di keluarkan untuk helikopter dari kathmandu ke lukla, dan apakah itu biaya perorangan atau untuk sebuah helikopter, terima kasih. Saya sangat senang sekali jika anda menjawab pertanyaan saya
I think it depends if you book the helicopter as an individual and go with others, or you book the whole helicopter (you can do both). We were with a group of people, but, all people were part of our group. I can’t remember the exact cost but it was definitely the most expensive cost of our trip. Around $500 USD per person I think it was?!
I've seen so many Everest videos, and yours was really special. Question- did the diarrhea problem affect you both, did it last for several days, and do you think it was from the food.
The diarrhea only affected Danielle, she had to take some antibiotics to get rid of it. It is very common, it could have been from anything - we aren’t 100% sure where it was from. Since most people will get it at some point while trekking it’s advised to bring some antibiotics that treat the common bugs they have there.
Wow didn’t know you would have to turn back if someone in the group isn’t feeling it. Usually they should just assign you a different guide for the day.
Yea, it really sucked. I guess you never really know the situation until you’re there unfortunately. Up until the last minute we thought the group was going to be split too and then the decision was made to not allow the whole group to go. It was still an awesome trip though, and we can’t wait to go back!!
@@ZachandDanielle Sorry you had to go through this. We were just there and realize how tough it is to get there in the first place and then to have to turn back at the last moment!
EBC is on my hit list very soon, I just wrapped up Kilimanjaro that was also rough but amazing. Do you recommend the trek company. Can you send me the name
Kilimanjaro is on our list!! We haven’t got there yet. Our amazing, singing Sherpa Kami can arrange everything for you!! He is the best! His email is: kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com
How much did you pay for all the Sherpas ? Did you have to buy permits? Cost of permits ? Did anyone check them ? Since you didn’t make it to BC did they offer you partial refunds ?
We booked with Sherpa Encounters originally, who works closely with a group of Sherpas and took care of permits, etc. Yes, you need permits to hike/trek in the area - they aren’t expensive and your Sherpa will arrange it for you. You buy them along the trail (we show this in the video). Hope that helps.
If you are scared of heights, once do a bungy jump gathering all your courages. You will never have fear of heights again. You did great here. Sh!t happens in mountains. Well done 👏👏
I did the trek a couple of years ago. I don’t understand why the ppl who wanted to and were able did the walk to base camp while the others waited in the tea house ? Surely there was a way to make this happen without affecting the ones who couldn’t make it. Seems ridiculous imo and I would not have been happy
Agreed! We weren’t happy either…but, I think the group leader was being overly cautious based on some people’s health in the group (including his own). We will go back though! We are working on planning our next trip back there already :)
Too many westerners choose a very difficult trek as their first in Nepal and thats unwise. I only did the 3 peaks on my 4th trip to Nepal, so I had a greater degree of knowledge and self confidence.
This is no failure! Making it to the top of Kala Patthar is quite the accomplishment, over 18,000 feet!! And actually much harder than the relatively flat trek from Gorekshep to EBC.
100%. Thank you!!! You should definitely do it!
Enjoyed the Video very much, this was no fail, just a start into a new adventure ^.^ , next year this time we get a new vid from EBC :D
Love it! Thank you!!!
I did that hike around the same time but we did EBC first and Kala Patthar was an optional hike the next day. Doesn't make sense to do such a strenuous hike first and wear people out. I'd be upset with that outfitter for bad planning.
That’s typically when they do, apparently. But due to weather they swapped it…
Wear glasses during bridge cross 😂😂😂 i am scared of heights too.. i usually wear sunglasses and look up while vrossing bridgess
That’s a great idea!!!
Awesome!! Those are great suggestions! Thank you!!! Have fun next year and let us know if you see our stickers!!!
My daughter just completed this trek. It was almost called off due to bad weather but they got lucky and weather improved. Top tip: she was in a party of just 3 people. Less chance of being called off due to others in party getting ill.
Ps. What you achieved in any event was awesome. Congrats
Thank you so much, and congrats to your daughter!!! Hopefully she still got nice views of the mountains despite the bad weather!
Great video. Reminding me of my 4D3N Inca Trail. Except we had to sleep in tents at -5°C. Hot during the day though.
@@ZachandDanielle Great. I think you would love it! An unforgettable and unique experiences for sure
Excellent video 🎉 Thank you for posting ❤
Happy you enjoyed it!! Thanks!!!
Can you share any details how you arranged for your beautiful trip - its amazing- thanks for sharing
Our amazing Sherpa is Kami! Here is his Facebook profile - you can reach out to him and say you got referred by Zach and Danielle and he can arrange everything!

I had warm socks too :)
We did it in May though, so I’m not sure if October would be more cold?!
Thank you for sharing your experience. Loved the video btw what month did you trek
Thank you!! We did it in May!
We had a drink there :)
And agreed - usually we do all our hikes on our own, and would have done this just with the Sherpa but we were invited by our neighbour actually, who has been so many times with this group and it was going to be his last time doing it as he is getting older so we did it this way this time.
Thank you!! 😊 I was such a great experience and we are so excited to go back!
Next May I will be on my way to EBC after so many years of waiting for it. You gave me some good tips for the trip. Maybe we will meet somewhere there, who knows. I try to find your stickers anyway 😉
Yes!! Please do!! Have an amazing time!
No failure in mountaineering. When you need to go back, you just go back. You guys did amazing. Kala Patthar Summit is much more difficult than that 3km to EBC from Gorak Shep. Well done! These are lifelong memories.
Thank you so much!!
Oh, well, no biggie. Been there, didn’t do your other 5k peaks, and EBC was a fun box to check. And, at the end? You mention Island Base Camp! That is our next gig in Nepal….
Thanks!! 😊
Are you going to climb island peak or just go to base? We just went to base because we didn’t have time to climb, but a friend of ours climbed it years ago and really enjoyed it!
Awesome accomplishment. This is in no means a failure. Kala Patthar is 5545 M where as EBC is 5365 M. I did EBC in Oct '23 but still rue not making to Kala Patthar. Good luck for your next attempt.
Thank you! 😊
Kala Patthar is an awesome accomplishment. It's higher than I have ever been at Thorong La 5416 m. Congratulations 🎉 I loved seeing the route through your eyes
Thank you! 😊 Thorong La at 5416m is a great accomplishment too!!
This is why, i decided to Go solo, No group, no hassle, no trouble.
Unless i get myself into the trouble. Hopefully I'll get a clear weather in December.
Kami is an amazing Sherpa if you’re looking for one. kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com
Marvelous
Wow, fantastic video. Thx
Thank you 😊 happy you enjoyed it!!
Sorry Guys! Looks like you had fun though. Great video Cheers🍻
We had a great time!!! And, we will go back! Thanks for watching!
Still a great video! Not a failure at all. Really enjoyed that story.
Thank you!! Happy you enjoyed it!
You should take out the word 'Fail' - it was awesome!
❤️
I don’t see failure. I see courage, strength, and a willingness to try no matter what happens 🇨🇦
Thank you!! ❤️
At 1:48 what are they doing to the dog? It looks like fire, but I thought that they celebrated and love dogs in Nepal and are against hurting/eating them 😭
It isn’t a dog, it is a pig!
I could listen to this all Danielle is delightful.
❤️
The highest pt at 5650m with a good view, in my eyes, looks better than EBC at 5364m.
It was very cool trip
Thank you so much!
Exquisite!
how did edHillary managed to walk that mileage with Tensing . EdHillary gear are displayed at AucklandMuseum . Very heavy gears but he made it . frm NewZealand
I really enjoyed the view. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!!
Certainly not a failure. What were your altitude symptoms like?
Thank you! We didn’t really experience any, but others did. We mostly just felt more easily out of breath at times when climbing up to some of the peaks. But, some people got worse symptoms such as breathing difficulties and headaches.
Quick question, did you guys use diamox at all during this trip? Thanks for the vid!
No, we didn’t. Everyone else in our group did though. We took garlic supplements, and CoQ10 which are supposed to help, and drank lots of water!
Definitely not a fail! lovely video, you guys are strong 🙌🙌
❤️
Hmmm, you shud have just gone :/ however just to say people aren't allowed to talk or meet climbers in their areas who are summiting. I was surprised myself to see no entry after the main ebc sign. Not many people know that... so you saw as much as most from kala pathar....congrats to you both.
Oh that’s interesting!! We didn’t know that!! Our Sherpa guide said next time he can set up some tea with some of the groups for us. We will have to check into that further!! Thanks for watching and for the congrats!! And congrats to you too for having done it as well!! :)
Your mittens look so cozy and I love you can free your finger tips. Did you buy them in Nepal?
I did buy them in Nepal! In Kathmandu! They are super cozy :)
I think you can find similar ones in North America too…but I wouldn’t know where to suggest! Maybe you’ll need to do a trip to Nepal ;)
@@ZachandDanielle oh the plan is definitely to pick them up in Nepal!
Oh that would have killed me. I just got back from doing it. I hope you get to go back someday. It is worth every step.
We will go back!!! We are hoping next year or in 2026! Happy to hear you had a good time!!
Hi guys. Great video. May I ask how you chose what trekking company to go with. Would you have a recommendation?
We are hoping to go back next year, or 2026! We have some other adventures planned in the meantime, so just have to figure out timing!
Great video, sooo close uhh. Just curious, was there only one guide Doesn’t seem right that everyone has to miss it because of a few that are ill
I don't know if you mentioned what month or time of year it was and if you found it to be crowded.
Great video
Thank you
We went in April/May and didn’t find it crowded! We did see others the closer you got to Base Camp, but we never found it overly busy.
From there is literally a short walk! I did it in an hour. Oh guys what a miss. I would have gone even dead.
We will be going back!!
Wearing prooper sunglasses helps during walks.
Very good Job Keep it Up God Bless You 💯❤👍🙏 New Subscribe
Wow didn’t know you would have to turn back if someone in the group isn’t feeling it. Usually they should just assign you a different guide for the day.
Yea, it really sucked. I guess you never really know the situation until you’re there unfortunately. Up until the last minute we thought the group was going to be split too and then the decision was made to not allow the whole group to go. It was still an awesome trip though, and we can’t wait to go back!!
@@ZachandDanielle Sorry you had to go through this. We were just there and realize how tough it is to get there in the first place and then to have to turn back at the last moment!
no failure here, its inspired me to do it! .. did u go in may time? if so would u recommend that time of year? im thinking oct/nov for me
Thank you!! Yes, we went in May, but October/November is the other good time to go!
@@ZachandDanielle thank u

EBC is on my hit list very soon, I just wrapped up Kilimanjaro that was also rough but amazing. Do you recommend the trek company. Can you send me the name
Kilimanjaro is on our list!! We haven’t got there yet. Our amazing, singing Sherpa Kami can arrange everything for you!! He is the best! His email is: kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com
@@ZachandDanielle thank you both, I will be looking for your stickers and will reach out out to Kami
@@PaulPadilla-h2x send us a picture when you find them!!
That's the problem with these short organized trips. More days is always better. Not there is much to see at the Base Camp anyway.
In which month did you take your trek?
We did our trek in May.
why couldn’t you get a new porter ?
We were happy with our Sherpa and porters!
@@ZachandDaniellehow much were the permits?
By the way you look like Peter Santenello.
@E39M5SPEED We don’t remember exact costs of permits as we paid for things all together, but they weren’t very expensive.
Please share the sherpa’s you used names and if I may ask what did you pay for this tour?
Kami is our amazing singing Sherpa!! He can book everything for you. His email is kaminurbusherpa@gmail.com
love from Nepal !😍😍
If you are scared of heights, once do a bungy jump gathering all your courages. You will never have fear of heights again. You did great here. Sh!t happens in mountains. Well done 👏👏
Thanks so much!!! Zach has done that really high bungee jump in New Zealand…maybe that’s why he isn’t as scared of heights as me haha.
@@ZachandDanielle oh great. Fears are very important in our lives to keep us grounded. Thank you very much for visiting our country. Best wishes 🙏
Ohh no. 3km will be less than 1hr walk....
Exactly :(
You did well, and you did get higher than base camp. You were in good enough shape to have made it.

Too many westerners choose a very difficult trek as their first in Nepal and thats unwise. I only did the 3 peaks on my 4th trip to Nepal, so I had a greater degree of knowledge and self confidence.
Only we did all those peaks in our group; some people didn’t do any peaks.
