Brian Waddington Hut | Pemberton, BC
Follow along with us on our hike up to the Brian Waddington Hut, via the Phelix Creek Trail, in beautiful British Columbia.
This moderately challenging hike takes you up to the hut, where you can stay (or tent camp like we did at one of the two subalpine lakes). From there you can hike the Tolkien Range (with the peaks named after famous characters from the trilogies, such as Gandalf and Frodo).
The hut itself was constructed in the summer of 1998, and is managed by the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club. It is a spacious hut that sits in a subalpine basin at 1715m (5625 ft) beside Long Lake. It sleeps approximately 25 people, providing all-season shelter for hikers, backcountry skiers, and all oth...

What agency did you book this with so I can make sure NEVER to use them. The planning of going to Kala Pattar instead of base camp was the wrong move. Great video I feel your pain and await your next trip to EBC. mine is going to happen Nov 2025. I'm training now.
Usually they go to base as soon as they arrive in Gorak Shep, and then those that want to do Kala Patthar early in the morning for sunrise. Due to weather, we were told to do it in reverse (and to be fair we had amazing views of Everest from Kala Patthar that day that we wouldn’t have if we did it the following morning), but since people in our group got sick that night the group leader said no one can go to base. In hindsight, we should have just gone haha, but, we were being respectful and listened. We are planning our trip back and won’t run into this again; we will be booking things ourselves and going directly with our Sherpa Kami (who is AMAZING)! Good luck with your trip!!! It’s a beautiful place, full of beautiful people.
I did the trek a couple of years ago. I don’t understand why the ppl who wanted to and were able did the walk to base camp while the others waited in the tea house ? Surely there was a way to make this happen without affecting the ones who couldn’t make it. Seems ridiculous imo and I would not have been happy
Agreed! We weren’t happy either…but, I think the group leader was being overly cautious based on some people’s health in the group (including his own). We will go back though! We are working on planning our next trip back there already :)

I did buy them in Nepal! In Kathmandu! They are super cozy :) I think you can find similar ones in North America too…but I wouldn’t know where to suggest! Maybe you’ll need to do a trip to Nepal ;)

That's the problem with these short organized trips. More days is always better. Not there is much to see at the Base Camp anyway.

I think it depends if you book the helicopter as an individual and go with others, or you book the whole helicopter (you can do both). We were with a group of people, but, all people were part of our group. I can’t remember the exact cost but it was definitely the most expensive cost of our trip. Around $500 USD per person I think it was?!
Certainly not a failure. What were your altitude symptoms like?
Thank you! We didn’t really experience any, but others did. We mostly just felt more easily out of breath at times when climbing up to some of the peaks. But, some people got worse symptoms such as breathing difficulties and headaches.

We went in April/May and didn’t find it crowded! We did see others the closer you got to Base Camp, but we never found it overly busy.

Don't go with a group. Go0 on your own with a guide or porter. I took it slow , ay my pace. made it to EBC. Take it slow. I was the slowest.

Being in your 50s and referring to majestic views as “retarded” and your wife in trekking gear as a “snow Mexican” is a bit off, guy in video.
If you are going again, a really good option to avoid the flight to Lukla is to take the original hike starting in Jiri. It is the original route that Hilary took when they conquered Everest. It is a 6 day hike to Lukla which gives a great way to acclimate and there are no crowds that you often get on the EBC route. It makes a longer trip, particularly if you hike from Jiri to Lukla and back. You could also try the 3 Peaks Trek to add another challenge. You made it to Kala Patar so could do the other climbs. I would also do the trek on your own then you don't have to worry about others. Next year when I return, I'll watch for your stickers.

Just for the record...the classic EBC trek starts in Jiri. The Lukla start is a mini version, taking about half the time and effort.

Thanks!! Zach did the Inca Trail with some friends a few years before we met. He loved it. We hope to go back and do it together as it’s been on my list for awhile! I was hoping to go after spending some time in the Amazon, but flights were just as expensive from Colombia as they were from home so, decided to go elsewhere afterwards. It’s on the list!!

You paid to go EBC. Whoever sick should have separate arrangements at their own expense like hiring other guide to bring them down. Its not right to ask you to give up.

Awesome accomplishment. This is in no means a failure. Kala Patthar is 5545 M where as EBC is 5365 M. I did EBC in Oct '23 but still rue not making to Kala Patthar. Good luck for your next attempt.

No failure in mountaineering. When you need to go back, you just go back. You guys did amazing. Kala Patthar Summit is much more difficult than that 3km to EBC from Gorak Shep. Well done! These are lifelong memories.

Too many westerners choose a very difficult trek as their first in Nepal and thats unwise. I only did the 3 peaks on my 4th trip to Nepal, so I had a greater degree of knowledge and self confidence.
Only we did all those peaks in our group; some people didn’t do any peaks.

How much did you pay for all the Sherpas ? Did you have to buy permits? Cost of permits ? Did anyone check them ? Since you didn’t make it to BC did they offer you partial refunds ?
We booked with Sherpa Encounters originally, who works closely with a group of Sherpas and took care of permits, etc. Yes, you need permits to hike/trek in the area - they aren’t expensive and your Sherpa will arrange it for you. You buy them along the trail (we show this in the video). Hope that helps.

We went with a group from Canada, and the leader of that group (Sherpa Encounters) works closely with amazing Sherpas and porters. He was the one that made the call for the group to not go. We don’t think that’s a typical thing - usually the group would be split, but we think due to his health at the time, some of those in the group, and the length of the hike that day he just called it off. In hindsight would he have done the same thing if we could go back in time? I’m not sure…. But we will go back again and book directly with Kami, our Sherpa - he can set everything up and then you don’t have to go with a group either.
