Honestly, I wish the Phoenicium gave more of an ability to return dead models to the battlefield. As it stands, only the one Pheonix has the ability to cheat death at all. It would make the city much more effective if, instead of having mechanics based on the death of models (which isn't under the player's control), it had mechanics that gave them a great deal more staying power. Much more flavorful, at the very least.
Ha! I am in the process of building an army and I haven't played a tabletop game with it yet, but even I figured out that I should go with Tempest's Eye.
It’s such a shame. Love the Phoenicium for everything besides the battle trait. Wish it was more about endurance rather than killing off the lowlife. Although it is a little fun to have a bunch of artherwings painted as mini Phoenixes, but needing them specifically to die just feels wrong
Misthåvn is such a fun city to play. Its honestly my favorite one. It does struggle from having not spells of its own, some nice ulgu themed spells would help it alot. It also needs a battalion, as it's the only city without one.
I used Living Cityas a place to use all my Wanderers units, supplemented by my poor old Sylvaneth..Turns out when you blend the best of the all together & add in a sprinkle of Stormcast its pretty damn good!
@@CinderfallGaming Nice! 🙂 Wondering that if Alarielle is indeed the Teclis-hinted next Broken Realms book after Kragnos, that we'll get some kind of Wood Elf/Wanderer rebirth..Maybe she'll forgive them so she can use them to help muster a larger army with Sylvaneth vs a new big bad - Belakor/Slaanesh/Malerion 🙂🤔
I find that phoenicium with flagellants is one of the more powerful but less satisfying cities armies. It just doesn't make a ton of fluff sense and its more just for game mechanics
Unless something has changed lately, a Har Kuron General can take the Murderous Zeal Command trait, so you don't have to pay a DoK priest tax to use it. The two other Har Kuron Command traits are kind of ass, so this is your likely go-to in most situations. Also, a lot of what makes the units in DoK fairly costed is the access to Blood Rites and Fanatical Faith battle traits, which I believe the Coalition units lose out on? In general, there's just seems very little reason other than "lore" in bringing in most of the DoK units with the exception of getting Mortal Wound ranged capability using Blood Stalkers or a Blood Wrack Medusa/Shrine.
I think there’s a reason why those more focused cities are in the Broken Realms and not in the battle tome and that’s because they are more narrative driven. Another reason is probably that they are leftovers from the development such as Misthaven. Regarding Har Kuron I think the severe restrictions are there because some combination with DoK could be crazy powerful otherwise but it’s probably because limited playtesting they just dropped the abilities entirely. The city which in my mind currently is lacking is Excelsis but it’s probably coming in an upcoming BR
my top three aren't based on how good they are but because they fulfill what I like most which is: Massed infantry with heavy shock cavalry (hammerhal) I love artillery (greywater fastness) and I love magic and magic focused armies (hallowheart)
I'd personally swap the spots for anvilguard and hallowheart, but thats mainly because my meta isn't full of lumineth and tzeentch like tournaments seem to be. Double casting Sisters of the thorn and dreadlord wizard on black dragon with Sear Wounds is great
I can see that for sure and I think Hallowheart is in a solid position atm winter eating to see how my thoughts on this have changed since the new edition.
Fair, I suppose. I do think you're overstating how much that'll affect Hallowheart overall, but that's entirely personal! Having been on the receiving end of a 4 wizard Hallowheart list, even with an auto-unbind from a Knight-Incantor, that much magic that's otherwise functionally impossible to dispel is rough. Overall, though, I'd probably only rank them one step higher than you have.
Love this video! I've been wanting to bring my Duardin from the Old World into AoS using this but can't decide on what would be best for a pure Dispossesed + Gyrocopters/bombers list. Thinking after watching your video Tempest Eye weirdly might fight the best, helping out mobility of Duardin and letting Irondrakes run and gun.. but also able to throw in some Kharadron too. What do you think is best for a pure Duardin focused force?
1-hallowheart(the ignore spells at 5+ is god with the actual meta of teclis and kroak) 2-hammerhall(karl franz and cavalry battallion is our best list atm) 3-tempest eye with heavy kharadrons 4-living city with 1\3 durthus because city behemots are useless 5-anvilguard(the worst alegiance skills and buff hydras and behemoths that are overcosted for 100 points) 6- every broken realm city, all are 100% useless and only for casual play 7-phoenicium that is useless even at casual play Oh i forgot greywater fastness,i rank it at 5 above anvilguard because it can give some good auras of + hit and wound to shooting units as my irondrakes
Despite being my favourite by far, Grey water is really "meh" at best and if you don't take it for the battalion (which is what i do) then its forgetable compared to other cities.
I won't lie, Har Kuron and Settler's Gain are my two favs, Tempest's Eye is a close third (think Har Kuron would be second tbh.) MY least fav, which honestly would fill my ninth slot, would be Hammerhal, and honestly I would say that my 10th would def be Phoenecium too.
Make no mistake I love the lore and story of Phoenixium... it’s just bad and made to look so more because I don’t think any other city is less than good.
A general question for Cities: Are there central units that are common to all the cities that a person can get to start with? Or is every city focused on it's units so there's little overlap? (Or, probably, it varies between cities.)
Hey, I know it’s been a year since you asked this and you either lost interest or got the answer elsewhere, but just in case: You can take any City of Sigmar (or CoS) unit in any Free City sub faction without restriction. Certain may favor very units, but all can be taken anywhere. So if you want a bunch of freeguild Guard in Anvilgard or a bunch of scourge privateer elves in Hammerhal, you can take em
It's kind of unfortunate that the new cities in CoS seem to be moving away from letting the player customize what kind of units they want to run, and start mandating specific units in order to obtain their benefits. The ability to use whatever models you had, or to mix and match, was always the strength of Cities. Sure, some cities had obvious synergies. But you weren't boxed in as to the "connective tissue", so to speak. For example, Anvilgard gives much of its benefits to the big scaley monsters. But nothing stopped you from eschewing the pirates in favor of Freeguild or Dispossessed or Wanderers, if shivering timbers wasn't to your fancy. Indeed, nothing stopped you from using most of the same models in multiple different city configurations, making your collection very versatile. ...although perhaps I've just answered the question of why the new cities are so restrictive. If you can fill out the bulk of your force with any model in CoS, you aren't incentivized to spend more money on specific model ranges. Why does Settler's Rest give most of the benefits to Collegiate Arcane Wizards? So you have to buy the new box set containing two war machines and a custom Battlemage, of course! Why does Har Kuron only let you use the prayer if you specifically have a Daughters of Khaine Priest? So you have to buy a daughters of Khaine Priest, of course! At least with the 1 in 4 models from other armies, it was an optional thing you didn't _have_ to do if you didn't own/want the models.
or it's because those new cities were made for people who wanted to have a themed list and wanted a city that was dedicated to that theme while still keeping those previous cities that allowed for a true melting pot. har kuron for classic dark elves, settlers gain for magical high elf support, etc. Not everything is based on selling man try looking at things with a more nuanced view
The poor bird boys of the Phoneicium. It would be better it gets taken over or destroyed like Anvilguard in the Broken Realms series or revamped. Let the Fyreslayers have it so they can have fire birds to go along with their Magmadroths lol.
Cinderfall: You don't want people to buy units just to die.
Every Squig Army: Hold my beer.
every skaven army either ..

I’m building up an army atm :)

I feel ya. Cries in Amber.
Genuinely surprised you didn’t put anvilguard number 1 considering it’s your main
As much as I wanted too I know I’m lying haha.
Its obviously not the best, objectively. But Hydras still go Brrrrrr
Request to do a ranking for the Ossiarch Bonereaper’s Legions (Subfactions)? Including the Legionless option, of course!

Yep, I’m an old Wood elf player myself. Actually had a really good chat with Dan on the Mortal Citizens Podcast on the channel about Cities of Sigmar.

My favorite is tempest eye but i wish we got another rule for COS units instead of a :use these non cos units rule
Agreed. Makes it feel like CoS was just a Copium injection for people who bought/own older models at the wrong time.

How do you feel about pairing scourge privateers with Idoneth for a combined costal raiders theme giving anvilguard units tides of death?
They Just wanna sell stormcasts! But I am glad the Old Fantasy Modesls can still be bought.

So now that AoS 3.0 is out, how would you rank the cities now? I would think Grey Water is now 10.

How are you auto-dispelling against Hallowheart every turn? All the auto-dispells I can think of are Once Per Game, like the Knight-Incantor
Teclis, also it only takes one auto dispel to make it so Hallowheart is on the Blackfoot straight away
