Vintage Military Trunk Restoration - Forme Industrious

- I visited an Antique Store in my town and this trunk was sitting in the yard. It caught my eye. I took a closer look, open the lid which fell off and noticed that it was pretty grubby. As a glutton for punishment that I am, of course I bought it. Cleaning this old trunk up was quite a job. It was probably much quicker to make than fix it up. It was very badly scratched and the original markings were impossible to read apart from the it is a Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) Trunk made in 1954. It belonged to someone in 10 Squadron, Townsville.
I do still have to make some handles for it, but I think it will make a good blanket box or coffee table now.
Here are some historical links I found relating to the trunk.

Hello sis you are a great crafts man.The end result was FANTASTIC
Awesome transformation Scott your whole construction process is great.Working between materials and methods. I Thank You Sir Scott .
Very kind - thank you Johnny!
Very cool! I was given my great grandmothers trunk in college for my things and still have it at 36. Almost replaced it but u gave me hope i can just fix the pieces that are falling apart! Hers is solid wood and they don’t make a lot of those anymore....cute doggo too!
Thanks Carmen! Yes please get it fixed. You won't regret it, though If part ways with it you may regret it down the track. Yes the doggo is the cutest, and she knows it too!
@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious quick question: the only parts I’m concerned with replacing asap are the aluminum edging because it sliced my leg open and I got 15 stitches. I put tape over it and tore off the rest but I don’t know what to search for to replace it. I now live in Manhattan and there aren’t many handymen here lol...any keywords I can search to point me in the right direction? I kinda want to strip it all down to look like the natural raw rhino box
That press trick was outstanding.... great work as always!!!
Glad you saw that - thank you!!
Wow. I'm a sucker for old trunks, and you've done this one justice. The removable base was a great call. I'm glad I found this.
Thank you Megan! Some time later I will make some handles to finish it properly.
I just found your channel the other night, you do absolutely brilliant work. This particular video inspired me to start my own vintage chest refinishing project 🤘
Awesome! Thank you for letting me know!
Came out great Scott! The aluminum bending trick is just genius!
Thanks Sebastian! I'm just glad that it worked :)
Scott Turner do you plan to fasten the box to the base?
No, the bottom of the trunk has ribs like the top. the base nestles nicely into the side of the ribs so it stay put. But I will have to check with the boss and see what she wants.
Scott Turner Always do that! I don’t recon there’s going to be any problems tipping the box when when opening the lid, if there is some stuff in it.
No stuff in it yet, but it is stable with the lid open. Cheers!
I love your work Scott ... and I don’t do metalwork. You’ve inspired me. I’ve got an old square (cubic?) military box with brass catches that my dad had. I’m going to clean it up and paint it a “proper” colour. Cheers.
Thanks Claire. I hope you do get to restore it. The brass will polish beautifully!
It's amazing how much effort when into making even seemingly mundane things like this back in the day. It's cool to see it restored.
Cheers.
Thanks John. To be honest, it took me much longer that I anticipated! And I was filthy at days end too!
No doubt that aluminum dust turns your hands black when you're sanding it. Not my favorite thing to do either.
Mate, anyone gives you a thumbs down for using your CNC machine for the box is a piker. You did a great job on that trunk. 👍👍👍👍👍👍🇦🇺
This is excellent. I like how you go about little things. Also, two thumbs UP for using the CNC... work smarter, not harder. Great video.
To right! Thank you!
That's too not to :)
Brilliant. I was mesmerised from start to finish. A pleasure to watch. Regards Paul
Great to hear! Thanks Paul!
You make me proud to be a Queenslander 😎👍👍👍 Great job as always Scott.
@Patrick - Scott used to live in New Zealand - he's ours now sorry. 😎
LOL, fair enough Rob 👍
I suppose you think Dave Dobbyn is a kiwi also ;) When I was over there I was referred to as "that fekking Australian". I think that was the last time we won the Bledisloe Cup too
LOL - geez that was way back in the day!
Thanks Patrick! Through and through!
Thumbs up for using the CNC, saved you a lot of time.
Yay! Thanks and yes that's why I got it. Cheers!
Nice work once again! Thanks for sharing on the aviation surfacing green pad. That looks like it cuts down on a lot of elbow grease. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for one
Thanks Keven. Its 3M www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/Scotch-Brite-Roloc-Bristle-Disc/?N=5002385+3293223502&rt=rud
Always find your videos fascinating and informative. This was a beautiful restoration. The contrast between the polished aluminum and paint was excellent.
But sorry - the dog stole the show 😉👍

would love to be able to do something like that. Amazing job and incredible result! thanks for sharing with all of us!
Thanks Cristian!
You've given me a great idea with an old camera case that I have in my garage.
Awesome!
Using the press to make those bends was awesome! Never would have thought of that.
Dillon Nichols
That was the Scott Turner mind at work. Very cool idea.
I think it was some sort of hydraulic press? Yes! it was very cool.
Yep. That was brilliant!
What's known as a 'joddle block'.
No kidding, and I have a press and I have had a dozen little projects that I should have used it for just like those tabs!
I thought that you did a fantastic job!! I love how you did the brackets with the press. Nice restoration.
Glad you like it, thanks!
Hi, using the CNC for this type of a project is acceptable. It's when people use it and try to pass off the work as if it was all handmade. See what im saying? But for something like this i wouldn't have handcut all of that either...lol very nice project. Thanks for sharing Scott.
Thanks Christine for your support! All the best and thanks for watching!
Nice find, and a great looking restoration!
Thanks Don! It was a worth while save I think.
The bar-bender is simple and wonderful, gonna make the same in my garage! Thanks for brilliant idea)
No problem. Yes they are pretty easy to make.
+1 for using the CNC - just because! Very cool project!
Yeah! Thanks Mark!
Nice save and cool tool.
Thanks Rob!
Thank you Scott, ...Again... very nice work. Like Dillon said... thinking outside the box, very creative.
Thank you! I'm glad the trunk scrubbed up :)
I was trying to come up with a pun about you not HANDLEing this restoration very well but I got nothing. 😉
I look forward to seeing you finish it. As for using the CNC. It’s great to use the tools you have. The same could be said about that magical paint remover disk you used in your drill. It saved a lot of labourious hand work. The wood box could have been made from a nicer plywood though perhaps or had some dividers built into it.
Still 3 thumbs up. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
You're right, I didn't handle it very well :) got me! All the best Wayne - thank you!
As always impressive work! Such details come from an artist. In this case you have a piece to transform; in the others, you have created them from nothing to something and makes me remember michelangelo.
Very kind - thank you so much!
I now need to buy an aviation corrosion surface preparation disc!! Great vid Scott and love the old school clinkos! Im a sucker for gadgets and tools mate!
Peter so am I! Thanks mate, and all the best!
Elbow grease in a spray bottle! Amazing! I always thought it would be thicker since it's a grease. Looks like it worked good with that sandpaper though. Nice job on the trunk!
I'm going to market that grease and make a fortune! Or maybe not :) Thanks Bradley!
So good to watch. Such great design elements that seem to come so naturally to you!
Thanks! Very kind.
Well done again Scott. The CNC use is cool gotta use what you have and they save hours. I have my laser cutting out parts while I watch videos on the tube right now. Gotta go put a new sheet in . This laser project will be on insta later today.
The technology is amazing once you get your head around it's limitations and it's correct use. There's no going back. Cheers Barry. I have to call you soon about a memorial plaque also.
As always, magnificent job Scott... 🍻
Thanks as always Fernando!
Beautiful dude! A lot went into that!!
Thanks Dan. It took a lot more than I planed to put into it. But it's very pretty now. Cheers!
I don't suppose you have more info on those aviation corrosion separation pad whatschamacallits??
Those are a 3m product (No affiliation) Not sure of the cost. I got mine from a closing sale with a whole bunch of other stuff. www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/Scotch-Brite-Roloc-Bristle-Disc/?N=5002385+3293223502&rt=rud
That turn out beautiful
Well done
Thank you Alan!
wonderful work. I especially like how you make something useful out of obvious scrap. That also looks enviably good. Greetings from the beautiful Jagsttal in West Germany.
Thanks Andrew. Glad I saved it from Scrap. Hopefully it will have many years left of good use. All the best!
great stuff! So much experience and ability to admire and learn from - thanks so much for the excellent material
Thank you Bevan!!
Bel lavoro👍
Grazie!
Fantastic to see someone using clecos for a project other than racing or aircraft! And why would anyone give a thumbs down for using the CNC for the box? Purist ire? If the companies making these boxes at that time had had CNC equipment everything would have been made on them. The outcome is beautiful, inspires me to fix up a couple old military boxes I have. After watching a few of your videos I'm amazed you don't have 10 times the subscribers you have.
Love your feedback - thank you so much!
Handles , I need to see how you gonna do it, great job really cool😎
Great work......nice aesthetic.
Thanks Greg!
Job superbly done!!! I couldn't stop saying," oh wow, look at how he did that!!!"
What kind of dog is that? Looked like the dogs that sat next to the pharoAhs!! Beautiful!!
Lovely video!!!
Thank you! The dog is an Australian Kelpie cross Border Collie. She is beautiful!
Incredible job. Nice work.
Thanks!
Great job again mate. I especially like the CNC part ;-)
Cheers mate! The poor CNC gets some love :)
Beautiful piece. Nice video. Thanks for sharing! : )
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Wow what an amazing transformation !!!
Thank you!
Молодец! Приятно смотреть на твою работу. Несколько твоих самоделок повторил...👍🏻👌🏼
Спасибо, приятно работать и творить.
I watched a video with my wife. we said "cool&cute!😊"
It's a very beautiful&historical trunk !
Great! thank you! I'll bring the sticker over to you in December.
Sorry for my late reply. If we are both available, it will be great if we can meet. I'm very glad. Thak you so much! I will also make sticker sometime soon. 嬉しい!(=happy!)
Great and thank you! Will let you know when we get in town.
Nice repurpose. I still love those temporary rivets you use.
Thanks Damo! Yes they are pretty handy, close to essential for correct alignment.
Loved seeing this treasure getting a second life!
Thanks! It should last many more years now.
Exceptional workmanship.
Thank you!!
Nice Scott. You did that trunk justice. The brass chain keepers are deluxe.
Dome nuts... Or, what I thought you were doing... Thread the spacers. No nuts required..
Thanks again Muddy!
Hi Russel. I threaded the ferrules and used a nut as a lock nut. Probably an overkill I suppose.
@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious just a little :) dome nut to lock would be neater though i think.
Scott this is an AMAZING PIECE, but Dude, you broke my heart when you used those pop rivets. Buck rivets man Buck rivets!
Nice work Scott better than new
Thank you Ty!
Very clever, and well done 👍!
Thank you Ronald!
Nice Job!
Thank you!
Awesome job!
Thanks Harold!
Wow very impressed with this. You made it look so easy which is even more awesome 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thank you Gavin!
I cant stop finding rivets amazing lol awesome resto scott, always really look forward to your videos mate.
Just awesome mate
Thanks Luis!
Turned out nice! I haven't used cleco's since my race car days, you reminded me!
I don't get to use them often, but they come in handy! Cheers!
That came out amazing man. Great job!
Thanks. Handles to come .
Awesomeness Scott. Great job I love it.
Hey Thomas - thanks you!
It came out so beautiful !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Great job 👍
Thank you Hugo!
13:12 Scott, you are a genius! Cheers for the idea :)
Thank you - my pleasure!
Nice resto, Looks Good! Don't for get to do a little vid on the leather for the handles.
Thank you Randy. Yes I will have to, cheers!
fantastic, scott!
Superb job ... where can I find what you refer to as .. aviation corrosion surface preparation disc?
Cool! I was wondering how you were going to incorporate welding in this video but you did it! Can't wait for the handles.
I got there in the end. Thanks Paul!
Very nice resto. I really like the base...
Cheers Derek. It's all about that Base...
Ha ha ha
Excellent job my brother
My pleasure Jegan! Thank you!
Bangin as usual Scott!!!
Thank you Justin!
^^가족이 행복하길.. 투박한 손이 멋있어요! 당신의 인생이 담겨 있네요!!!
Family is the most important and happy life. thank you.
Hi Scott Great job asusual. Can you tell me where you purchased the strip please
Good job mate. Love all your work. Have you had any corrosion between the brass and ally? Keep the vids coming.
Thank Paul. None yet after the resto but I'll keep and eye on it. cheers!
Hello Scott, great video as always...can you please share a link to where you acquired the aviation preparation discs please?
Hi Dave. Thank you! www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/Scotch-Brite-Roloc-Bristle-Disc/?N=5002385+3293223502&rt=rud
Wow. Simply wow.
I'll take that - that you!
Nice work Scott. You’ve gotten big enough to hire help now? That’s great news.
Thanks Michael! Oh I pay for it alright ;)
Your editing skills are next level.
Much appreciated - thank you!
Awesome! So talented 😍
Thank you!
Your makes are so enjoyable it's ridiculous.
Thank you so much!
Great. What is the paint color according to RAL?
Excellent 🎯💯
Thanks!
Hi Scott. I do not recommend using the guard on the buffer. If it catches the part you want it to shoot down and not around into you. It happenend to me
Yes I might have had that thought in the back when I was using it. I hung on tight. Thank you!
Magnificent restoration
Thank you!
Una restauración excelente. Espero ver pronto el siguiente capitulo. Gracias
Gracias por ver. Tengo otro proyecto que hacer ahora. ¡Espero poder hacer las manijas de cuero pronto!
Belo trabalho Scott nota 10 recuperação magnifica.
Where do you find all these cool tools, definitely not at Bunnings. Oh could we see the tin that you use or mention the product type? Just a clue on what to use. I never understand all the American products, ( is lacquer what we call varnish?)
Definitely not Bunnings! Tin? I used Danish Oil. You can use Tung oil or Wipe on Polyurethane. Maybe Shellac. I try all different types of finish to see what I like. Really depends on the type of finish you need also. Satin, Gloss etc. Hope that helps.
@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious thanks Scott, I've been playing around with Danish Oil from masters . Anyway you have inspired me to restore the trunks I've got under the house. I can't remember antique stores from when I lived in Townsville. Keep up the great work. PS Do a collaboration with Pask Makes.
Thanks Lindsay - yep fix up those old trunks. The Store was Virgil's next to Castletown. It's a sneaky one, a bit hidden. I hope to meet Neil one of these days!
Nice video. Thank you for sharing.
Great job as usual.
Thank you Joe!
Hi Scott, A lot of hard hours obviously went into this..... Great work on the trunk and also the video. I actually have my Dad's RAAF trunk fully complete - Be happy to share photos of the Handles and Hardware for you if it helps!
Thanks John! Yes there was a lot of work in this job. Thanks for the offer for the photos, my gmail is the best for that sturner2022@gmail.com I have some photos already but it doesn't hurt to compare. Cheers!
Very nice work!
Nice picture also. What cameras/lenses do you use?
And that violet lighting spot is very amusing.
Thanks! I use a Cannon 750D with the standard 18 - 55 Kit lens. Violet light? I have a LED at the back wall.
Yeah, I see that. And I think colored light unexpectedly makes the whole pic better.
Very good job for a kit lens, by the way! Closeups look great. especially at 8:29 and 8:45
@@side2k you pos
fabulous renovation of the trunk Scott, I've never seen one of those aircraft paint removal attachments before - do you have a link to where they can be bought at all? Would they work well on paint removal on steel as well do you think (I've got a couple of ammo boxes I'd like to restore and try to keep original hardware where possible)....Really enjoying watching your creations from a fellow Aussie !
@weldmama thank you! I used 3m Roloc discs. I bought them from an aviation workshop that was closing down. Maybe on the expensive side. Grit blasting maybe a good option for you perhaps? Thanks again and all the best
Great finished product as usual. I’ve wanted to restore my dads old RCAF trunk for along time now but I’m worried about doing more harm than good. The sides are actually thin fibreglass and it seems very brittle. Anyone have suggestions or experience with something like that ?
Thanks Todd. Thin fibreglass. You may be able to apply an extra coat of epoxy resin after lightly sanding. That may help stiffen it up.
That bending is smart.
Thank you!
Watching you struggle to bend that bar reminds me of you trying to lift a Blackhawk blade 🤣
You Sneaky Rotter! Gidgee Gorilla hey. I was only pretending to struggle with those blades. lucky I'm Huge ;)
Another work of art. What were those heavy duty pin type things called that you held the hinge in place with before riverting? I've never seen them before, but could have used them on many an occasion.
Thanks again! Those pins are called Clecos or Skin Pins for sheet metal work. Used in aviation sheet metal work all the time. Cheers!
@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious Thanks mate!
Nice resto-mod. My only concern is the piano hinge being a different metal than the aluminum. Isn't it going to have the same galvanic reaction like the previous latches did?
Thanks Jeff. Yes it's possible if there is moisture around. I suspect that this trunk was left out side in the weather for ages. Corrosion needs electrolyte (Moisture) to work.
Muy buena restauración👌👍🇪🇸🌿
