The Beatles in Germany - Back in the Old DDR

On a recent trip to Germany with The Quarrymen, we played at the book launch for a fascinating book about The Beatles in the former East Germany. Some great musical performances, as well as our Quarrymen performance too.
Although only published in the German language for now, it is hoped that an English edition will follow.
It is incredible how those living under the communists in the old DDR - known as East Germany.

Naming conventions. The official name was Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic), usually abbreviated to DDR (GDR). Had to google to learn this! Who is the woman singing?

Thanks. Yes, I made sure I named this as DDR - GDR is German Democratic Republic for us English speakers. The lady was a local Gospel singer in Berlin called Angelique. Amazing voice.

Die Beatles waren nicht verboten. Der Autor lobt seine befreundeten Musiker meiner Meinung nach etwas über den Klee. Letztendlich habe ich mich nach den Originalen gesehnt. Das könnten genannte Musiker trotz Studium etc. nicht leisten. Enttäuschend ist, das andere Namen nicht auftauchen: Maxe Ansin (Zigeuner Maxe). Der war als treibender Bass in der DDR Szene gut vernetzt. Zu Bescheiden, um den "Dicken Max" zu spielen. Er ist auf dem "Eulenspiegel" Titelblatt zu sehen. Erwähnenswert sind die noch existierenden Filmaufnahmen mit Diana Show. Der zersetztende Umgang mit "Gammlern" und "Langhaarigen" hat zu Verrat, Werkhof, Ausreise und in den Tod geführt. Da gibt's nichts zu beschönigen. Es war ein riskantes Hobby, Beatfan zu sein. Herr Martin gelingt es nicht, über seinen Tellerrand zu blicken. Denn dann hätte er Joe Sachse erwähnen müssen! Joe Sachse hat eine CD mit seinen sehr kreativen Beatles Covern herausgegeben. Die finde ich stark. Schade! Als Jugendlicher nahm ich natürlich alles, was ich bekommen könnte. Das war viel. Manuskripte von Sendungen wie DT 64... Ich hatte fast alle Platten, die in der DDR, in den befreundeten Bruderländern und im Intershop herauskamen. Mein Kinderzimmer war rundum mit Beatles Bildern tapeziert. In den 80ern kein allzu großes Problem. Für andere Dinge konnte man eh kein Geld ausgeben. Die Beatles waren und sind tatsächlich ein Konzept fürs Leben. Die Spannung vom ersten Knall bis heute hat nicht nachgelassen. Sie waren DIE Musiker, die man auch noch in 200 Jahren hören wird. Ich mag sie.
