I remember even the big name producers doing this at my internship. All of those super expensive monitors in an acoustically treated control room and it all comes down to how it sounds in a Honda Civic 😂
Hahaha. I had to pause this vid at the beginning & laugh out loud when you said “I took the mix out to my car & it all fell apart.” It’s funny because I watched this vid at work after I uploaded my mix to my iPhone to listen to it on the way to work earlier that day. Same EXACT thing happened. The song has a clean intro, just guitars, no drums, build-up to the heavy riffs. Once the bass & drums kicked in it was boom central. Lol. Sounded good on my studio monitors, headphones, earbuds too, but in the car, complete mud on low end. I’m using Logic Pro, using the Vintage Console EQ as one of the plugins on the stereo out. I had the Low gain at +1 only but the Low Frequency at 110hz. Plus after I bounced down & did some mastering I had Linear EQ on with it boosted around the same, 110-250hz. So after work when I got home I lowered the Console EQ Low Gain to 0, changed frequency to 40hz. Then bounced again & in the master template pulled down the notch from 110-250hz down to a slight cut in that range. Sounds way better now, low end is definitely managed & not booming out of control. Mix isnt perfect yet by any means, but thanks for your vids & Crisp/Clear Heavy Mix Formula. It really is helping my mixes become better with each mixdown.
Thanks for some very helpful info. You told a fib around the 5-minute mark. You said the compressor is set to a low ratio while the video clearly shows that you have the compressor's ratio set to inf:1.

Thanks Bobby, another great informative video! Really appreciate you taking the time to make these. It would be helpful if you would cover your thought process on how you approach Gain Staging!
Here's a tip for low end: Ever wondered why your low end is inconsistent? Like, some low notes of the bass guitar just jump out, while others aren't enough? It's because of the compressor. The bass guitar produces more highs than lows or lows than highs, depending on what the bass player is playing. The compressor doesn't care, it just sees the overall level of the whole spectrum and compresses by it, making your low end very dynamic. If you set your compressor detection filter for the bass, on where consistency matters (like, ~between 60-700 Hz), the lows will stay consistant, and only the highs will vary. This will not alter your tone like a multiband compressor would, as the relation between frequencies will stay the same.
Yea I usually separate my bass tracks between low (0-250ish hz) and high (359ish-5-6k) and absolutely crush the low track with limiting and even still the higher notes disappear a little bit, it’s annoyingly as fuck
Awesome tips, could you maybe someday show how you would fix the extremes of low end? (like you said, either it gets too boomy or too thin); this video shows more if you had a thin mix but what if you have a booming low end, how would you attack it? Thanks!!
I'm currently struggling with this at the moment so your tips come in handy ! Is there a way I could have your opinion on some of my current work ? Thanks for another Super Duper video !
Big question, what if it is just the kick drum that sounds too boomy, how do i fix that? Like too much resonance in the lowest end? is it too compressed? not compressed enough?
Hey frightbox! loved this video! Quick question: when we are approaching our master chain, should our end-goal tonal balance low end (100ish and lower) be intact before we even hit the SSL? Or should we hit the master bus with less bass and then add our low end back at the very end or toward the very end of the master chain? All concerning trying to avoid smushing up a limiter with a bunch of low end and ending up with a squashed song.
@@jeffsnider9869 Hello Jeffrey! I always aim to get the tonal balance right within the mix itself. I'm not a fan of doing a whole lot on my maser bus chain. I never add low-end back in on my master buss chain. You can check out exactly how I handle the master bus chain in this video: ruclips.net/video/8TIIzwRdlqk/видео.html
200 or more is how much I take lows I take away when it comes to my lead guitars. Works so well. Absolutely right about tracks sounding dull until they are played with other tracks. I agree. I’ll have to keep those other two tips in mind for my future projects. Love your stuff Bobby.
Lmao dude wtf I was trying new things with low end today and struggling. Turns out I was high passing my kick way too much. I was high passing at around 50hz with 12-24db/octave and not leaving enough room for bass (unless the song is just fast steady double kick and it super low tuned I like to have the kick below the bass) but of course I tried just not high passing the kick and now that I’m done I check my phone and see this video lmao awesome as always. Also, does the distortion that L1 sometimes gives depending on how hard you crush the bass bother you? In your video it’s only a couple dB but with a horrible recording it’s sometimes way too dynamic and I have to crush it
I have a question, i downloaded your Quick EQ Guide and i noticed (in the video) that you did not cut everything below 30hz. Is really necessary to do that action?
Great question! In this case I high passed everything below 30HZ on my drum bus. This only affects my kick since everything else is high passed above that individually anyway. I did it this way because my kick's channel strip didn't have a steep enough filter slope, so it made more sense to do it on the stock EQ that's on my drum buss. This lets my kick dominate between 30-60hz and the bass sits above that.

Don´t you think MV2 is a better solution for problem #2 ?
Just simple compression and EQ. I'm using the old school Metric Halo Channel strip in this video. Pretty much on par with most stock channel strips these days.

It can be a lot of different things and that's definitely one of them. I've found that using a brick wall limiter solves the issue 99% of the time.
Yea I usually separate my bass tracks between low (0-250ish hz) and high (359ish-5-6k) and absolutely crush the low track with limiting and even still the higher notes disappear a little bit, it’s annoyingly as fuck

Oh, I thought I was the only one using a limiter on the bass :D
Btw, why do you like the 24 dB slope on your filters?
I prefer a steeper slope. I wan't as little happening behind the cutoff frequency as possible.
Big question, what if it is just the kick drum that sounds too boomy, how do i fix that?
Like too much resonance in the lowest end? is it too compressed? not compressed enough?

I never crush tracks hard enough with the L-1 to produce distortion. I just use it as a "cap" on my bass.
