  • A recent viewer asked if I have a strategy to manage Burnout. Do I have a strategy to cope with burnout or do I just roll with it? In this episode of The Dirt I'll talk about this as well as what advice I'd give my younger self, now that we've gone through the process of building a concrete mountain house in the middle of nowhere.

Nice house. Thanks for the insight. I am in the middle of this on a smaller scale alone and working and with pets but some days are so rewarding. Just so deep in now but so close yet so far. Just punching it through. Makes me feel better to see such a nice home and how you have done so much and keep working towards your goals. Lovely. Thanks for sharing.

Insightful, so insightful. And inspiring. I retire in 6mos. I had been preparing for it for the last 20 yrs. Saving. Big house maintenance chores done like new furnace, new roof, new appliances, low maintenance conversions. Build the new addition that would convert easily into aging in place, finances all debt free. Hassle-free in my old age. And realize that in sitting down at the kitchen table with a blank piece of paper in front of me, I challenged myself to write down what I wanted to do in the next ten years now that the time was mine. Year by year. I had a hard time coming up with what I wanted to do next besides "... not go to work" I realized that in the final run up to the "big event" pulling the trigger to retire, I had stopped dreaming.

You should be so very proud. I can't even start by saying that our journey was so very much like yours. So very many parallels that it's kinda scary! From the side of the mountain, to the frustration of subs, to the re-drawing of plans. And the subs that seem to drop from heaven to help. We built a SIP house....every sub was scared of it. Good thing, cuz we wouldn't have wanted them to work on it if they had no confidence in their skills. I truly enjoy watching your progress. It's almost like watching the journey of 25 years ago. Yep, if you knew the journey and it's sometimes overwhelming challenges, maybe would have second guessed it. BUT...in the end, you will not trade the experience for anything. I applaud you, with a standing ovation! My husband's buck list also..every man should build his own house and be accountable to himself. Bravo, bravo bravo!!

It's worth it. When I was burnt out my doctor told me to have a minimum 6 days off to recharge my sanity battery every 3 months. 6 days is just enough for you to break the burnout thought processes and breathe. 10-14 days is better but a minimum of 6 days is needed. Also taking half an hour each day for yourself helps, and a few hours each week just for you to sit, relax, have a drink watching the sunset etc. This helps you cope and manage the stress until you can recharge the batteries.

  • @RedDevilRaspberry
    @RedDevilRaspberry 2 года назад +3

    Hi guys! Its me.. RedDevil!
It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since you moved there. I started watching when Jaimie did her “Canning 101” video series. She is the reason I started canning and I’m forever grateful for that. I’m not even sure how long ago that was but, I’ve been watching ever since. Watched you do all you could to build a small homestead in the ‘burbs, watched as your brought chickens and goats to your home, watched you basically lift a barn to shore it up and make pens for the goats and then, sadly watched them leave. Watched as you made your first garden there and watched you move the chicken tractor all around… and I’ve enjoyed every moment, and cried at a few. I cheered you on as you looked for land, found it and put your dreams on paper and made the commitment to ‘just do it”! Incredible!
What you’ve built there is awe inspiring! I can only imagine how difficult it’s been on all of you, but I know, when it’s all said and done, you won’t have a moments regret. You’ve done it! I raise my glass to you both 🥂🍻 and wish you nothing but smooth sailing ahead. You’re an inspirational pair!! God love ya both! Thanks for taking us along! 💕✌🏼 ~Lisa

First, love the diplomatically cautionary advice for those leaving a comment. More importantly, great video. When I first started watching your channel it was periodic and not that long ago. I didn't sense any enthusiasm for the project and nothing was compelling me to tune in and see what was happening. But overtime your commitment and dedication to doing this well became much more apparent - you have a low key presence, and I had to be reminded that should not be confused with lack of enthusiasm. I now really appreciate the calm nature of your channel. You are doing something huge without all the drama that we have become accustomed to and almost think is the norm. Wise words and skilled work .. thanks for sharing your journey.

Well Done. You nailed everything right on the head. I've been in your shoes and doing it all over again at 68. You just keep puttin' one foot in front of the other and eventually you turn a hole in the ground into a home. Most folks dream of owning a home like yours but they never put in the time and effort that it takes to stand back and say to themselves "I Did That". You can't tell me that doesn't bring peace to your hearts.

** The thing I found about life is, it is never done. There is always something else to accomplish.. And the good news is, that is evidence we are alive.. That is what living is.. Doing things and experiencing things. It's just that simple. If you weren't experiencing building this beautiful home on the mountain, and all the ups and downs that have come with it, then you would be doing something else and experience the ups and downs that come with that.. You picked a good one for sure, and the benefits when you can sleep in your own bed at night in this beautiful home, will be your prize. You did not just build a home.. you built a lifestyle.. a way to live that suits your passions about what living means to you. You guys did good and I am so happy that you chose 'this' experience and also that you chose to share it with us. .. Thank you for that!!

    Great Dirt session!
As you know I've been here since before the move so I've seen the struggles first hand. Well, at least the parts y'all have shared. You've done a very good job of keeping your head above water. My great grandfather built their retirement home from the ground up. He had never built a house before either. He had done a myriad of different projects just like you. I was a very little girl when they built their house so I don't know what it was like for them. But, I do know that I spent many happy years in that home for holidays and weekend visits. I never saw a time in which they regretted building their own home either. I fully believe in the end when the project of building your home is complete you will feel that it was worth every bit of blood, sweat and tears that it took getting there and one day your grandchildren and great grandchildren will build happy memories there as well.

You two have built a beautiful house. Burnout is real and it is hard to find good help that is reliable. I actually got more done and was more motivated when I had inspections that had to get done on a regular basis (every 3 months something had to get checked off) or we would have to pay for a building permit extension, only $55 but money I didn't want to spend. Now that we have our occupancy signed off on our house and I have no more deadlines to make my motivation seems to have gone but I still have an unfinished master bathroom, no carpet upstairs, cabinet doors to make, stair treads to make, and a house worth of blue pine to mill out, sand down, and install. I'm still determined to get it all done, just having a hard time getting motivation in the winter months. So I'll wait for it to warm up a bit more so I can get on my mill and mill out all the blue pine I need.
I watch your channel for multiple reasons but the big reason is for the motivation of seeing someone else do it. I know if you can do it I can too. Thank you for sharing your journey and all the knowledge you have learned along the way. :)

Your house is wonderful! Take 1 day at a time, 1 project at a time. You guys are doing great, you need days and/or few hours just to take a step back to breathe and evaluate the work you have done. One day all you will have to do is go out and inspect your property to make sure everything is ok and make plans for any fixes, projects…..
Learned that few years ago when I was trying to get chickens going and a garden in Florida summer, while it’s mid 90’s plus humidity. You sit down plan and do 1 project at a time, setting it up to run on its own, as much as possible, so one day all you have to do is come out check on your chickens while you feed them, and do a quick inspection of the coop and run for any fixes. As far as the garden, we grow what grows best in the season: summer tropical fruit; winter everything els.

I started watching your channel before y’all moved to the homestead. Jamie’s preppier videos really helped me to prepare us for the pandemic! It is hard for to realize y’all have been working on this house for 5 years, but I’m sure it’s not hard for you to realize how long it’s taking! You and Jamie are one fantastic team! Y’all’s home will be quite the show place! And y’all will have such pride in it knowing you built it yourself! Sending ♥️and 🙏

Another great video. We’re transitioning from one lifestyle to another here, getting ready to get into our place, and this was filled with reminders on why we do what we do and the way we do it.
    Thanks Jeremy. Again.

After doing it myself n spending a couple of years doing it you couldn’t of said it better! There is so much detail that goes into house building, it’s truly a mental insanity at times, and dealing with contractors is very hard!

Wow what an amazing philosophy. I love your attitude it’s the difficult things in life that make us that much stronger.
I love what you said about finishing your to do list becomes optional rather than mandatory. “Carry-on my way word son.”
May God continue to bless you and your family 😊

I think you have done a fantastic job. It’s clear that you have spent a tremendous amount of time in researching your design and materials, plus execution of your building phases, procurement of subcontractors along the way. Truly you have epitomized the “Carry on” attitude. Your place looks fantastic! This video is awesome for those who especially would like to build and those of us who dream of doing so but are beyond that open window of time. You have gained tremendous knowledge and to our great advantage as viewers, have documented along the way, explaining and demonstrating the why’s, how-tos , should-haves and happy with the way it’s turned outs . All I can add is Bravo! You have persevered ( and continue to do
so! ) Well done so far! Can’t wait to see you and your family finally get to move in and enjoy……rest…….begin new but smaller projects. 🙌🏻👏

Being ones own GC seems a logical decision to us owner-builder types. NOT doing it seems like an equally obvious route to people who like to buy a finished house from a home builder. To each his own.

The house is looking fabulous. I've so enjoyed watching it happen. We decided to build in 2009, but made the dubious decision of employing a builder. He abandoned us when the summer holidays arrived (December in our part of the world), and we moved into a house with missing windows, unfinished floors, no plumbing, no electricity. Rainbow toilet hire became my best friends. We're not nearly as capable as you and some things are still not done.

The peace, the view, the peace, the view coffee in the morning, cocktails in the evening. I see your future and I am so jealous! :) We all hit the occasional wall, once we expend enough energy bashing up against it, we reason our way around it, through it, over it. Which you and your wife have done countless times. I remember the frozen pipes, the small cottage and the kids. My imagination is filled with the difficulties you did not show!! Continued best wishes for good health, smooth sailing projects, and happiness!

Hi from Australia, I found your channel some months ago when I was looking for practical info on using mylar bags and preserving of all things (thank you Jaime). Since then I have been working thru your videos of your family's journey over these last few years. As a viewer I have seen you and Jaime evolving, but all the way thru, you both have remained solid and remarkable human beings. Its a tough thing admitting to be human but your advice is well timed and necessary. Thank you for that. Congratulations to you both. I love your house. Looking forward to seeing it finished and you both sitting on that porch enjoying the views.

I'm finished with all the trim, um what about inside this closet? what closet? BEEEEEEEP! I have faith in you guys! definitely employ white board lists on that last bit its so satisfying to cross off every little thing til its done!
