I had a dent not as bad on my Honda Accord and Dent Pro turned me down saying it was too difficult for them. This man is a craftsman and Dent Pro is for door dings.
The repair itself looks 98% which to some people is good enough, I did body repairs for quite a few years and later went into estimating. I have experience writing estimates for these types of vehicles and the issue that presents itself in this scenario is that the vehicle needs to be recalibrated just for the bumper removal, a calibration could run anywhere from $400-$2500 depending on the manufacturer requirements. 41k is definitely a steep price for a repair but if you have insurance, it should not be an issue, this is a 70k pickup, 41k is still within the threshold. Also repairs wouldn't have to be invasive in this scenario, you would approach it the same way, glue pull to minimize the damage and light glaze to even whatever you couldn't get out. But of course, bad body shops will exaggerate the extent of repairs, good body shops avoid cutting and welding.
I was a body man back in the day when cars were made of steel and you had to have the skill set to actually work the metal back into shape. I’m very happy to see that it’s not a lost art. Great work my friend!
Most car bodies are 95% steel today. It's only weird vehicles (like a Range Rover or a Saturn) or vehicles with special performance features (like a Porsche) that have panels that aren't steel, other than the plastic bumpers.
@@niyablake I don't see the problem with that if the shop does a good job of duplicating original construction. The repairs can be way better with replacement panels than with repairing original panels, depending on the level of workmanship of the shop, and how structural the repaired areas are. Steel that has been bent repeatedly will be weaker, so more structural unibody parts should be replaced, rather than bent again.
It’s nice to see someone who actually has skills to fix things. It’s so rare nowadays to find anyone who actually has the technical skills and actually cares about doing great work.
Let me say that you guys did a marvelous job! That being said, that's a$2100.00 repair. Could have been fixed by a combination of paintless dent removal and a smidgeon of filler and paint. AND blend. You really showed us your skill and patience, and that my friend is commendable, but collision work is get-it-in and get it out! Whoever quoted this guy 41k should have all of his windows broken in his shop, not to mention the manufacturer making panels so big that you can't replace them using standard techniques. I used to work in a body shop and this is rediculous! You, are as stated before, an Artist! Thanks for the video! You just proved that if you put your mind to it, you can do almost anything.
Awesome explanation of how complicated this job would have been for 41 grand. Your work and end result doing it your way is a much better way then ripping the whole truck apart.
Im amazed that you were able to handle the metal that was knotted or kinked. And a significant amount of the metal was undoubtedly stretched in some places. Amazing.
this is the third rivian I have seen that had minor rearend damage but the quotes to fix them were over $40,000. panel to fix this is $14,000 all by itself and then you still have to almost take it all apart. as the video said, it is all 1 piece construction so you need to pull the windows and everything out, repaint to match and put it all back together again. at shop rate that isn't cheap. When that cybertruck comes out it will be the same way. cheap to make it in a gigapress all in one piece but it will not be cheap to fix after a minor fender bender.
@@crash9632 it literally is a accurate quote from a body shop. It’s a we don’t want to do it quote but the reality is nobody wants to do it. Same thing happened with the bmw i3 . You might be able to find a cheaper quote but it’s still gonna be 30k. The panel itself is 14k numb nuts . 1/4th of 41k is $10,250; that is less than the parts omega lul.
Honestly this is Master class in automotive witchcraft. Amazing work. the common way I've seen this "Paintless dent" removal done is they do everything this guy showed but they remove the panel for the final touch up work. Hammering the dents on a steel table with a thick canvas table cloth on it. This is flawless and really shows you how good this guy is.
I mean, this was probably still a $3K+ job. For a dent. The problem here is that modern cars are built like smartphones. If the manufacturers could attach all the parts with adhesives they would.
That’s not PDR, it’s full blown magic!!! So impressive. Not only the repair, but the time to reach the level of repair. I’m never not blown away by PDR, but damn that Rivian repair is crazy good.
$41,000 , so if this pretend truck was a few years old they may have totaled it…. Engineering at its finest. Insurance must be crazy on these things. Great job
Chalk up another reason to get a Lightning over this.... Hopefully Ford doesn't screw it up and go the same unibody way with their new T3 Truck, but I have a feeling they are. Everything is becoming so disposable, yet the prices are insane.
This really does highlight that the design of some vehicles like the Rivian goes a long way to determining if they can be fixed at all. Amazing that you were able to pull this off.
@@alainmulaire9471 Same deal with my Honda Element. It looked kinda goofy back in the day when they were new, but 2 decades on they look better. And the big bumpers and wide doors/open space makes for one of the most practical vehicles ever. Dents and scratches just add to the utility aesthetic.

I grew up in the car business and I’ve seen so much PDR work as well as watching the work being done as a kid. I would imagine this was in the thousands… $5k would seem excessive, but… $2-3k wouldn’t seem out of the question for me. That’s a full 2 days worth of work, just estimating that if his shop is doing 5-10 cars a day at $150/ (that could be low depending on the area and if they charge per dent). That’s a range of $1500-3000. I could be way off.
@@drmich1 I’m not in the car business but I am in the construction business. With The amount of time , effort and expertise this took I would be in the $3-4k range. They did an amazing job…
That’s pretty amazing! My question is: is the paint in that area now compromised over time and prone to separating and chipping now that the panel has been dented and then manipulated?
Even if it was, it’s still preferable to have that little patch resprayed in future than the whole mess of work that would have had to be done with tearing the vehicle apart with the other shop.
@@jasonmorgan661 it’s not the parts, its the labor, he listed all the dumb things it takes to change that body panel (remove front and rear windshields, battery pack, etc). This truck is poorly designed for repairability.

@@AlexandarHullRichter what he meant is now you just but replacement panels and paint
@@AlexandarHullRichter I mean, I'd hardly call the F150 weird or unusual, but it has a fully aluminum cab and bed. But I get your point.
I was a body man too but now I value personality more
That was some incredible work. I have seen paintless dent removal but you guys are straight up pros. Got to be up there with the best of the best
Amazing.
$41k lets just be honest that is a bs quote from that shop. That means these trucks would be totaled easily. But great job on the repair!
this is the third rivian I have seen that had minor rearend damage but the quotes to fix them were over $40,000. panel to fix this is $14,000 all by itself and then you still have to almost take it all apart. as the video said, it is all 1 piece construction so you need to pull the windows and everything out, repaint to match and put it all back together again. at shop rate that isn't cheap.
When that cybertruck comes out it will be the same way. cheap to make it in a gigapress all in one piece but it will not be cheap to fix after a minor fender bender.
@@steveherr450 Hold my beer while I grab my stud gun...............
Yeah it is totaled . You have to be a dumbass to buy a rivian
No way in hell the quote was a 4th of that. It's 100% clickbait
I looked at it and said "impossible" "this guy is gonna use filler or something" Honestly insanely impressive work, all done by hand.
Great Job Matt! Really pushing the limits with what can be done with PDR.
I'm always amazed by how the paint doesn't crack or break off.
It often does, but these people rarely show the paint failures.
@@dsmbilly3690 ah that could be the reason. They only show what's successful.
How much was the repair cost?
Paint today is not like it was years ago or this technique would not work.
@@paulchristenson5256Yeah back in the 70s and 80s that paint would have flaked off and exposed area would have had at least surface rust.
Hi Matt, this is an absolutely amazing repair.......an incredible amount of skill. Well done my friend
Wow, thanks!
To do that in 2 days, staggered sat here!
@@mattboyette4375 Really curious the cost of this repair, given the traditional methods cost, and how hard this was and level of skill involved.
@@heyaisdabomb
Me too. 2 days of work. 16 hours at how much per hour?
I learned two things. #1 Bro got skill and patience. #2 Seeing how a Rivian is made I will never buy one now.
Honestly this is Master class in automotive witchcraft. Amazing work. the common way I've seen this "Paintless dent" removal done is they do everything this guy showed but they remove the panel for the final touch up work. Hammering the dents on a steel table with a thick canvas table cloth on it. This is flawless and really shows you how good this guy is.
glad to see there are still some honest people out there that have the get it done attitude to help people out
I mean, this was probably still a $3K+ job. For a dent. The problem here is that modern cars are built like smartphones. If the manufacturers could attach all the parts with adhesives they would.
@@dsp4392this comment hits the nail spot on greedy corporations
Dude casually works magic on these cars. Bro you are indeed Top level tech.
2:21 was always amazed at how few panel gaps the rivian had. And I understand now that it is in fact a pain and comes at quite the cost.
Yup, this truck is closer to an iPhone than a Blackberry. Something that looks pretty vs something actually designed to do work.
@@noseboop4354 problem is the engineers got lost in the lightness and aerodynamics and didn't consider repairs
It’s unbelievable that this story even made headlines,it’s a freakin dent in vehicle, there’s no way it should cost that much.
Great job
No wonder why insurance rates are going through the roof! These Rivians are throw away vehicles for rich people
Chalk up another reason to get a Lightning over this.... Hopefully Ford doesn't screw it up and go the same unibody way with their new T3 Truck, but I have a feeling they are. Everything is becoming so disposable, yet the prices are insane.
Fix it myself for 50 bucks.
That restore was amazing. Highly skilled work. Impressed 👍🏿👍🏿
Incredible job. Was never expecting it to look that good
This really does highlight that the design of some vehicles like the Rivian goes a long way to determining if they can be fixed at all. Amazing that you were able to pull this off.
This will cause insurance premiums on Rivians to go up.
I'm liking my 20 year old Pilot a lot more every day,...
Terrible design
I call bs. No way $41000. This is just price gouging because they are new
Amazing save Matt! You have to have serious focus on repairs like this as they can start to look much worse before they finally start looking better and it takes a huge amount of confidence and belief to see it through and you did that perfectly, great job! 👊😉
Amazing. I had my own PDR business for close to 10 years in Jax FL. I did some stuff that I honestly surprised myself with. But there’s no way I would have attempted this one. In fact, I wouldn’t have thought it possible. Yeah I can see some spots that were unfixable in this dent, but I’m honestly in awe that you got it that close. The top edge and the edge against the tailgate would have been absolute deal breakers. Never thought it could’ve gotten even that close.
Excellent job! 👍
I think I read a story recently where a Rivian had a a dent like that...and the insurance company totalled the vehicle.
If this were me, you’d have earned a customer for life. Great work! I’m completely blown away!
I'm concerned that you dent cars enough to need a lifelong dent repair guy 😂
I just never have dented my car and it would be my best advice ;)

Beautiful work. Can you mention how much you charged for the work? I think it would be awesome to compare the $41k that was quoted somewhere else to what you ended up charging.

Right. I don't think people understand the level of effort and attention to detail this work requires.

Apparently he doesn't want to tell anyone what he charges. Maybe it was $31,000 LOL

No
I looked the panel up and its $1900😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅. The videos real but the price is bullshit
@@jasonmorgan661 it’s not the parts, its the labor, he listed all the dumb things it takes to change that body panel (remove front and rear windshields, battery pack, etc).
This truck is poorly designed for repairability.
Why can’t they just buy the panel and cut the dented section out and replace it with the piece needed from the new panel?
Great job guys. I just can't help but think that now that Rivian has for sure seen this they will get rid of that access point to keep future repairs even harder. You guys are great and keep up the AMAZING work.
Rivian being a smaller company and right-to-repair being such a big deal, I'm not sure they'd be willing to take the PR hit. That's definitely a move TESLA would do, though.
Hands down the best PDR I have seen, the damage was bad with crease in the metal running through it and wouldn't normally be a candidate for PDR so the perfect results just show the very high level of skill you have.
I have a lot of respect for people with kind of talent.
This is amazing. I’m surprised all that work leaves the paint unscathed. Great job!

Dude that dent should be impossible to remove. Sweet job, I would have assumed you would've run into more issues with those tiny dents at the end there
That's unreal. I am truly shocked by this work to such a high level. Amazing
Amazing job bro! He gets to keep his OEM paint too. I guess the idea is to not modify anything, but wouldn't a hole cut in the top of the tail light cavity have given you better access?? I guess it wouldn't matter, anything less than 41K and the customer would be quite happy, I'm sure it was far less than that...
When I first read this was going to cost between $3k & $7k for 2 days work, my first thought was that's still a ripoff. But then I saw the detailed photos of the damage, and the skill that it took. I'm impressed. I could enjoy sitting in your shop with a 6-pack watching you guys work, lol.
You start the video thinking 41k is way too much, and walk away thinking 3-7k might almost not be enough. The guy just has so much expertise and got it looking like new.
